Death$ucker Records releases the secret weapon of the Bristol underground music scene on an unsuspecting world. Gusset have been scaring friends and punters alike since 1996, unleashing aural assaults at breakcore, techno and hip-hop nights around the city. Not to mention anywhere else that will have them, from Brighton to Madrid. They don't fit comfortably into any nice little pigeon hole and have a sound all of their own, but strangely no imitators.

After a promising but stalled start as a low-fi Amiga 1200 toting indie band that made Portishead sound like the theme from My Little Pony they regrouped and concentrated on a purely electronic offering. Their break came in 2002 when Death$ucker head honcho Parasite booked them to support Fanny and Venetian Snares on board the good ship Thekla (the floating venue brought to Bristol by Vivian Stanshall as the Old Verity Showboat). Since then they have jumped at the opportunity to support any act their name sounds funny next to.

This remix compilation brings together remixes of their 2004 self-released Skidmark CDr. With remixes from the likes of Planet Mu's Shitmat and Teknoist, Cock Rock Disco's Jason Forrest (née Donna Summer), Manchester's king of mash-up Hoonboy, V/Vm's hardoff (aka M-Pi) and a collaboration with the Adverse Camber collective's DJ Spazmo. Further offerings include several of their own remanglings of the material, familiar to their live sets, and a track by Zod's Binray that claims to be a remix but neither he nor they can identify what was actually being remixed, it's all too long lost in time. Either that or he pulled an Aphex Twin on them.

Typical comments include, "Why do such nice people made such horrible music?", "Stay away from my children", and "I had no idea you were so depressed/twisted/perverted*"

* Delete as applicable.

Even the great John Peel said of them, "Is there any word in the English language more exciting that the word Gusset?"

The crowning glory is the gusset flashing transsexual nurse neon artwork. If you thought "nu-rave" couldn't take any more irony, then you've yet to "Ask Dr Kim"!

The remix album (due for release on Death$ucker end of Sept) is almost finished and we are working on the artwork now. We gave up on the slutty nurse photoshoot idea due to budget restrictions (ie, £0). So instead we will be making a collage of gusset photos. Please send photos of your gusset to: gusset[at]gmail.com or submit to the flickr pool: http://www.flickr.com/groups/showusyergusset/pool/ or put them in the myspace comments, whatever.

You don't have to be wearing the item, just pose your pants and snap away. Photos will be used under a CC licence and you will get a credit in the artwork. You won't get paid mind, but you get the satisfaction of being able to point and say;

"Check this; that's my gusset on that album cover."
"Get away!" your friends will say.
"No really, look, my name's on the 'thanks' inside, here," points.
"You magnificent bastard!" they will declare.

Submission deadline is 1st September 2007.

Hello,

We have a few shows coming up – including our first overseas! – so it seems like a good time to let you know what were up to.

Gusset will be playing live at:

GoatLab 3 @ Timbuk2, Bristol, UK on 2nd March (live set and DJ set) along with Jason Forrest, Patric C, Mad EP, Hunting Lodge, Parasite etc.

Impersonal Strike, Madrid, Spain on 15th March along with Shawn Greenlee (a.k.a. Pleasurehorse)

Laptop Battle 3 @ The Croft, Bristol, UK on 30th March. Live electronic improvisation in mixed doubles format (Gusset with Parasite)

On top of all that we're trying to sort out a London gig for April. Check our profile or our website (gusset.co.uk) for updates.

Our remix album for Death$ucker Records is still in the pipeline. It's only been three years so it can't be far off now!

DJ Spazmo's remix of our 99 High Hoes Don't Make It Right is out now on the Disco_r.dance vol.1 compilation on the label of the same name. It also features Ra, dDamage, The Doubtful Guest, Bovaflux, Random Number, AZ-Rotator etc etc. It's very good and you should buy it.

Thanks for reading,

Dan

Disco R Dance Vol 1

[image copyright Raoul Sinier, used by permission]

The 2CD disco_r.dance Vol 1 compilation is the debut release from the disco_r.dance label. It has been set up by London based Dancon One and Pete Stormcrow, the brains behind the club night also of the same name, and the long running Moon Palace electronica nights. It features tracks from the likes of dDamage, Ra, Random Number, The Doubtful Guest, Bovaflux, and the DJ Spazmo remix of 99 High Hos Don't Make It Right by yours truly. Artwork by Ra [large version].

You can pick it up now from Norman Records, Smallfish or Rough Trade etc. Boomkat and Warp should have it in soon. The discogs page (currently pending status) shows the full track listing.

The same DJ Spazmo vs Gusset track is also due for release on the long anticipated Gusset remix album on Death$ucker and as a B-side to DJ Spazmo's download only Splintered Digital release through Bleep. Obviously I'd suggest you bought all of them.
