CORDIALLY INVITE YOU TO ATTEND
5th Annual NYC
OPEN SAMHAIN RITUAL

All Hallow's Eve

By Starr Ravenhawk
Halloween.
Sly does it. Tiptoe catspaws. Slide and creep.
But why? What for? How? Who? When! Where did it all begin?
'You don't know, do you?' asks Carapace Clavicle Moundshroud climbing out
under the pile of leaves under the Halloween Tree. 'You don't REALLY know!'
by Mike Nichols --Ray Bradbury
from 'The Halloween Tree'
Saturday October 31st
3-5PM
IN THE GARDEN AT AVENUE C AND EAST 9TH STREET IN THE EAST VILLAGE
Samhain. All Hallows. All Hallow's Eve. Hallow E'en. Halloween. The most magical night of the year, Samhain is the best-loved Sabbat for many of us, sometimes called 'THE Great Sabbat.'
Exactly opposite Beltane on the wheel of the year, Halloween is Beltane's dark twin. A 'spirit night', as they say.

The dark half of the year commences on this night. The Witches' New Year's Eve, as well as the third and final harvest festival in the Wheel of the Year.
A night of power, when the veil that separates the worlds of the living from the Otherworld of the dead, becomes its thinnest. A night to remember deceased loved ones and honor ancestors.
Samhain is a night that exists outside of time and hence it may be used to view any other point in time.
Not only is Samhain the end of autumn; it is also, more importantly, the end of the old year and the beginning of the new. These two themes, celebrating the dead and divining the future, are inexorably intertwined in Samhain, as they are likely to be in any New Year's celebration.

Witches leave out a candle to guide loved ones home, a glass of wine to remind them that they are loved and remembered and a cake to remind them of the sweetness of life that we shared together. But this is not a sad time, for we have our loved ones back for a little and so love and laughter, song, dance and drama, are the order of the season, a time to celebrate.
All are welcome of whatever path you follow, to share together the power of The Goddess and God, if you are a newcomer, whether Pagan, Witch, Druid or Shaman or have as yet not found your path.
Bring with you pictures or such of your loved ones and come ready to do your Paper of Regrets, to place into the cauldron to be burnt, ready to start a new page in your book of life.  For this is a time to ponder on and celebrate the Dark Mysteries of ourselves and nature, reflected in the wonderful salve of the Crone and the God of the Underworld.
Samhain is also known as Halloween, All Hallow's Eve, Hallowmas, Day of the Dead, Third Harvest, Hallowstide, and Celtic New Year.
Spell/ritual work: astral projection, past life recall, Dark Moon mysteries, mirror spells, scrying, protection, inner work, clearing obstacles, transition, culmination, transformation. Releasing bad habits and toxic relationships, illness, failure and poverty; everything you do not want to carry into the new year.
BRING HAND INSTRUMENTS -- drums, flutes, tambourines, claves, maracas, etc.  AS IT IS A GREAT TIME FOR DANCING AND MERRIMENT.
Attire:  suggested attire color white, black, yellow, orange (not required for attendance).
A fee of $15.00 in person $16.00 via online payments is required. (please bring receipt of online payment).
THANK YOU, BLESSED BE.

FALL EQUINOX/ MABON SABBAT CELEBRATION
SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 20th / 09
      3-6pm
130 East 7th St. (bet. 1st Ave. & A) 2nd Floor
       East Village
The September Equinox is always a beautiful, natural phenomenon worthy of our recognition and honor.  On this particular holiday, we cry and we laugh.
Mabon puts us in touch with the transformational elements of life here on Earth.  This is a bittersweet stop on the ever-turning Wheel of the Year.

The Autumn Equinox /Mabon ritual carries the wisdom of the ages and hopefully divine inspiration, which will give sacred life and meaning to the many challenges and changes we face, and to the light and shadows around us.
We, as priestesses (all females) and priests (all males) paint little blue tears on our faces. Some of us literally cry, morning the gradual disappearance of the Sun, but then we immediately rejoice and thank the Mother for giving birth to the Son, for holding him in Her womb, and for nurturing him.
Purpose: Rituals in general, help to reconnect us us with a heightened sense of spritiuality.  By participating we become more fluent in communing with experiences that often defy understanding in the physical world.  In a ritual  we can balance reality or our position in everyday society with Nature. We might discover the need for a change in our lives, or we might convey a passionate commitment to protect our environment.  Rituals are insightful, empathetic, and enjoyable.
EVERYONE MUST BRING A DISH OF ANY KIND FOR US ALL TO PARTAKE IN THIS GIANT HARVEST FESTIVAL FEAST.  Dishes like potatoes, corn, breads, juices, wines, meats, vegetables etc.  Let’s give thanks.  A true buffet style Harvest Dinner.
Attire: Suggested colors are black – you can add colors of the Sun and Earth to it like orange, yellow, wine, russet, copper, gold bronze and brown (not required for attendance).
IF ANYONE HAS HAND INSTRUMENTS PLEASE BRING AS MANY AS POSSIBLE, DRUMMING BRINGS GREAT ENERGIES TOGETHER, as we always create our own music.
A fee of $10.00 in person $11.00 via online payments is required. (Pease bring receipt of online payment).
Payments online at meetup: Payments online www.wftacademyofpaganstudies...webs.com under events or at

The Pagan Pride Project
The Pagan Pride Project sponsors Pagan public Equinox rituals and charity drives every September. Select a link below to find out the who, what, when, and where in your area!
Statement of Purpose:
The Pagan Pride Project is a non-profit organization. The primary purposes of this corporation shall be the advancement of religion and elimination of prejudice and discrimination based on religious beliefs.
Mission Statement:
The mission of the Pagan Pride Project is to foster pride in Pagan identity through education, activism, charity and community.
Defining the Mission Statement:
We try to keep our purpose balanced through the inspirations of Air, Fire, Water, and Earth:
      Air: Education
We're never going to be able to practice our spiritual paths openly if we don't give the public accurate information about what we do and do not do.
      Fire: Activism
People aren't necessarily going to go out of their way to find out what Pagans really do. We have to have the courage to act on our convictions and do what we need to do.
      Water: Charity
We know that what we do returns to us. We need to demonstrate this by offering compassion to our communities where it is needed. When we share our own abundance, we show that we trust the Gods to share abundance with us in return.
      Earth: Community
We're never going to be able to practice openly if we don't know anyone else in our local Pagan communities. We need to weave networking webs in our cities, in our towns, in our rural areas. We need these webs to support one another. That support will also show those who would restrict our practice that we are not just a few isolated wackos, but are a growing congregation of people who adhere to a faith that, while different, is as valid as their own.
History
What is a Pagan?
The following definition is for the purposes of the Pagan Pride Project. Others may define themselves or their group in different ways, and that's OK. Some groups that fit the categories we list may not call themselves Pagan, and that's ok too - that's why we say that first and foremost the definition of a Pagan is someone who self-identifies as a Pagan. But the following was created in order to have a functional definition to help educate the public about the spiritual paths we cover:
Definition:
A Pagan or NeoPagan is someone who self-identifies as a Pagan, and whose spiritual or religious practice or belief fits into one or more of the following categories:
Honoring, revering, or worshipping a Deity or Deities found in pre-Christian, classical, aboriginal, or tribal mythology; and/or
Practicing religion or spirituality based upon shamanism, shamanic, or magickal practices; and/or
      Creating new religion based on past Pagan religions and/or futuristic views of society, community, and/or ecology;
Focusing religious or spiritual attention primarily on the Divine Feminine; and/or
Practicing religion that focuses on earth based spirituality.
What are the symbols around the Pagan Pride logo?
Some Symbols used in this logo are courtesy of Alternative Religions at About.com
On the left side, top to bottom:
The Yin/Yang symbol, a sign of balance - from Easternphilosophies, but used by many Pagans
The Celtic Cross, or equal-armed cross - again a sign of balance, often symbolizing the four cardinal directions/classical elements. Also similar to the Native American medicine wheel, though many Native Americans do not consider themselves Pagan.
The Thor's Hammer, a symbol of Asatru/Heathens, Norse Pagans.
The Triple Goddess symbol: the waxing, full, and waning moons, symbolizing the Goddess as Maiden, Mother, and Crone
The Eye of Horus: an Egyptian Pagan symbol
Venus of Willendorf: This figurine dates from 24,000-22,000 BCE and isa Mother Goddess symbol
Ankh: Egyptian Pagan symbol symbolizing eternal life
And the right side, top to bottom:
The Pentacle: the most common symbol used in Wicca or Witchcraft. Its five points symbolize Air, Fire, Water, Earth, and Spirit, in the circle of eternity.
The Triskelion: used in Celtic Paganism, symbol of the Celtic elements Earth, Sea, and Sky.
The Celtic Cross: symbol of Celtic and Gnostic Paganism
Stone Megaliths: Like Stonehenge, a Druid symbol
The Green Man: consort to the Triple Goddess, the God of nature
The Enneagram: a New Age symbol of interconnectedness
The Tree of Life: from the Qabala, a Jewish mystic tradition appropriated into Western magick and occult systems

SPRING
EQUINOX-OSTARA RITUAL

      7-9PM

Friday
March 20
th

LOCATION
TBA WILL CONFIRM SOON

OSTARA/
Spring Equinox

EOSTAR, THE
FESTIVAL OF TREES MARCH – 20-23
rd

The Moon of
the maiden and Faery folk. Gather the seeds of inspiration and imagine
what they can grow into. Build an Altar to the Moon and bless your garden
in the moonlight. Prepare the earth for planting and yourself for change.
Breathe new life into social situations.
Asking for fair, swift justice. Full Moon in Libra (Opposite Aries
Sun)

The
time when the chains of winter are broken, Spring has arrived, This
is the time when all of life burst forth in joyous celebration. As at
IMBOLG this is the seed time but for long range goals. Day and Night
are equal bringing balance. Persephone rises from the
Depths of the Underworld and brings forth new life. Hair is adorned
with flowers, Eggs are decorated as they are a symbol of rebirth.

Purpose:
Equal balance of day and night.  The arrival of spring

New born animals
begin to emerge and explore the world. Day and night are equal as Spring
begins to enliven the environment with new growth and more newborn animals.
Many people feel "reborn" after the long nights and coldness
of winter. The Germanic Goddess Ostara or Eostre (Goddess of the Dawn),
after whom Easter is named, is the tutelary deity of this holiday. It
is she, as herald of the sun, who announces the
triumphant return of life to the earth. Witches in the Greek tradition
celebrate the return from Hades of Demeter's daughter Persephone; Witches
in the Celtic tradition see in the blossoms the passing of Olwen, in
whose footprints flowers bloom. The enigmatic egg, laid by the regenerating
snake or the heavenly bird, is a powerful symbol of the emergence of
life out of apparent death or absence of life.  This is the time of spring's
return; the joyful time, the seed time, when life bursts forth from
the earth and the chains of winter are broken.   This is the time when
the Goddess Hecate returns to the underworld and Persephone returns
to Demeter.  Light and dark are equal. It is a time of balance, when
all the elements within us must be brought into a new harmony. Now is
the time to see how well our own souls are balanced and to plant those
things that we are lacking in ourselves. It is a time to look within
our hearts to see the empty spaces to be filled.

A PARTICIPATORY
RITUAL WHICH EVERYONE IS A PARTICIPANT.

This Sabbat has been dated back to 5000years old. Yule means ‘wheel’ in reference to ‘the wheel of the year’, and is also called the Winter Solstice.  It marks the longest night of the year and the point when the days slowly being to lengthen.  In Pagan theology it marks the rebirth of the sun and the first promise that light and warmth will return to the world.  It is therefore sacred to all infants male and female, as in Male sun/son Gods and female Goddesses.  As the Sun is reborn our time of quiet reflection and meditation, the rest following the harvest, draws to a close.  New ideas, dreams, hope and projects are born, and our thoughts and energies turn to the new season of life ahead.

True, there are months of cold ahead for many of us, but the light grows and warmth will follow.

Recognized as a time of closure.  Gracefully let go of those things that are no longer needed.  A time for renewal and rebirth.  A time to think about what you want to accomplish in the months to come.  Outline the goals you wish to work towards.  While the arrival of Yule evokes an exorbitant amount of good will, warmth, and cheer, it also provides us with some other very important opportunities:  a time to reflect, a time to count our blessings, and a time to show appreciation for all the wonderful things other people do for us.  With the smiles there is pause for thought.  Count each blessing gratefully, as the time to show appreciation has come.

The newborn Sun is the Great Mother’s gift to the world, and this is reflected in our gifts to friends and family.  Giving is a statement of faith in the abundance to come and in the love that survives the coldest winter.

PLEASE BRING WITH YOU:

In a tradition formed by us we do a grab bag gift exchange (everyone who comes must bring a small gift to be placed in a grab bag under $10.00).  Preferably a gift crafted by your hands.

WE ARE ASKING IF PEOPLE COULD BRING WINES, JUICES, COOKIES OR CAKES IT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Attire: Suggested colors are black, red, white, green, etc.
