Current mood:  ecstatic
First off, I'd like to give shouts to my ace Dandiggity, for droppin' science on Spin like Bill Nye, to my boy Jeff, for always being in the know (he's the one that made me aware of the news I'm about to drop), and to all that came out and supported us at MM's new home at Voodoo. Especially to those folks who help pick me up off of the ground after spraining my knee while chasing a knuckle-headed bouncer carrying my brother out in a chokehold. Shit was off the chains, otherwise.

So onto the news...

The February issue of Spin Magazine shouted us out for Music Machine, in a monthly column called "Spin Out," which lists "the best times you'll have all month" We're on page 100. Here's a transcription for those who do not want to be caught purchasing a magazine with My Chemical Romance on the cover (more on MCR later)...

"February 3

Music Machine
Sofa Lounge, San Jose

From Debbie Deb to A Tribe Called Quest to Bjork, expect anything and everything at this hyperactive house party, which poses as a posh sofa-laden den of sin."

I'm sending an e-mail to Spin first thing in the morning to correct them on the new location. They were also nice enough to mention our boy Basura's Atomic party @ the Blank Club, where I also spin from time to time. It's nice to know the word is spreading. Thanks a million to Dandiggity and Spin!

Before I go, I caught a pull quote on the cover from My Chemical Romance stating, "Kids were gonna kill themselves, then they heard our music."

I tried to avoid reading the article, in fear that I might die from laughter, and have it be ruled as a suicide.

In 2006, we bid a teary farewell to many legends. Here are just a few that have touched me personally:

James Brown Penned "The Godfather Of Soul," "The Hardest Working Man In Show Business," "The Amazing Mr. Please Please Himself," James Brown single-handedly changed the face of Soul music, as we knew it. His influence looms large across the map of musical genres, notably Hip-hop. He has also influenced many important artists of our generation, including Prince, Michael Jackson, Public Enemy, among many others. (Listen to: his entire catalog of work.)

Jay Dee (J-Dilla) One of Hip Hop's most influential producers from the mid 90s to today, James Yancey has blessed many artists, such as De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, The Pharcyde, Erykah Badu, and others with his ethereal sound structures and bangin' drum programming. He later brought up his own crew Slum Village to ghetto gold. His collaborations with fellow producer Madlib (Jaylib), as well as his final servings Donuts and The Shining displayed his versatility as a producer, until suddenly succumbing to an incurable blood disease in 2006. (Listen to: "Get a Hold" by A Tribe Called Quest, 1997)

Wilson Pickett A cutting-edge soul singer with a voice a rough as gravel, and a delivery as smooth as silk. His major hit "In The Midnight Hour" was a chart banger in the mid 60s. (Listen to: "Engine No. 9," quite possibly one of the most murderous tracks in Soul music history.)

Don Knotts Jack Tripper (R.I.P.) and his smokin' roomates' fictional lives wouldn't have been as watch worthy, had it not been for their wacky landlord Mr. Furley (although I would've watched Three's Company for Janet and Crissy anyway.)

Steve Irwin Watching The Crocodile Hunter, I always wondered if the dude was immortal, unfathomably brave as all hell, or just plain out of his mind. Turned out he was just a down ass G, ready and willing to show us the wonders and dangers of the wild.

Let us raise our glasses to the legends we have lost this year. Cheers.

Here are just a few of my ventures into the world of visual art. I purposely left out my shirt designs because someone could easily steal the shit and call it their own. Maybe next time, y'all. 'Til then, enjoy...

Current mood:  nostalgic

I found this 80s nostalgia list on Chai-Chai's blog. The list encompassed a good number of 80s trivia, but left out a lot at the same time. Here are my contributions:-If you broke a VCR or two while rewinding the Pheobe Cates scene in Fast Times and Apollonia's scene in Purple Rain (80s boobs)

-If you cried when Optimus Prime died in Transformers: The Movie.

-If you were torn between Lady Jaye and the Baroness (see GI Joe)

-If you learned the value of honesty from the Mormon commercial with Alfonso Ribeiro and George Gaines (who broke my window)

-If you broke a vase and said, "glue, I need glue!" (strictly for the Bay Area heads)

-If you got up on a Saturday morning and watched Buster and Me while eating a bowl of Dunkin Donuts cereal (twin bags, bitches)

-If your Big Wheel had a hand brake that let you skid down the driveway.

-If your cousin listened to nothing but Sade's Diamond Life album in his room full of Nagel prints.

-If your mom sang Karaoke on a Minus One system (mostly an Asian thing, I think)

-If you had a crush on Karen Allen in Raiders of the Lost Ark, especially when she wore that white dress (I know I did)

-If you had nightmares after seeing KISS without their makeup

-If you were watching the Giants vs. the A's on October 17th, and wondered why the game blacked out before feeling your house shake.(Hyphy citizens only)

-If you knocked over a plant or two while lipsyncing to "Peter Piper" by Run DMC with your brother and cousin in front of your aunts and uncles, and getting in trouble for mouthing "Goddamn that DJ made my day" (Run DRP, fresh for 86, you suckas)

-If you threw an uneaten KFC drumstick at your neighbors face for being a bitch

Ok, I seem to be going off on my own tangent here. Feel free to contribute.

It's perfectly healthy and normal to sulk. Sulking provides a good balance for happy lives.

I have my occasional affair with sulking like anyone else, but this time around, I have almost become comfortable with it. No one should sulk his much. Even with a productive, fast-paced week with many accomplishments, I could not keep a straight, attentive head. My good friend (not to mention one of the world's greatest artists to ever live) David Choe told me, "pain makes the best product." He's right.

So far, I have written two songs, one of which I had been sitting on for about a year. I also learned to play "Ain't No Sunshine"  by Bill Withers, on guitar. Simple song, sure, but this is my jam right now, and I had to learn it to add to my bonfire guitar repertoire. .

Sulking and music go hand-in-hand like peanut butter and chocolate. During this whole trip, my iPod has become a dear friend of mine, waiting to tell me all the right things. Not to mention Nate, Bella and espacially Beth. When sulking, I like to switch up my playlist, aptly titled Sulkamania. Here's the run-down:

Bill Withers "Ain't No Sunshie"

Marvin Gaye "All The Way 'Round"

Blue Magic "Side Show" (quite possibly THE saddest song ever written.)

Donny Hathaway "Jealous Guy"

The Concretes "Contamination"

Cat Power "Hate"

Radiohead "Scatterbrain"

My Bloody Valentine "Loomer"

Bjork "Unravel"

Depeche Mode "Any Second Now"

Zero 7 "I Have Seen"

Cat Stevens "Here Comes My Baby"

DJ Shadow "Fixed Income"'

And to snap me out of Eeyore mode, I'll throw these songs on:

Willie D "Bald Headed Hoes" ("...why they wanna be bald, nobody knows!")

Yelle "Short Dick Cuizi"

Spank Rock "Backyard Betty"

The Mumlers "Red River Hustle" (although I have sulked to this album in the past.)

DJ Shadow "Walkie Talkie" (cold ego boostin')

Main Source "Looking At The Front Door" (sad song, but gets me up. This also happens to be one of my favorite songs ever, alongside "Kumite (Fight To Survive)" by Stan Bush for the Bloodsport soundtrack and "Cold As Ice" by Foreigner.)

For the record, I did not write this entry with the clearest head. High? Yes. Drunk? A bit. Sulky? Shit yeah.

I am now accepting applications for a new support group/band I am starting up called The Sulkamaniacs. We will meet for support meetings/band practice at the Sad Bastards and Girls Center on 1st and San Fernando on Thursday nights. We are a support group/band that helps the recently-broken-hearted cope with their pain by playing aggro covers of songs from bands like Mazzy Star, The Sundays, Baha Men and others. Our first LP, slated for a Spring '06 release, is tentatively titled War-Torn and ForlornOur first single is an original piece entitled, "Santa, Please." We are currently looking to fill the following positions:

Tambourine suit

Circuit-bent Kazoo

Electric Spoons/ Wah-Wah Washboard

Reverse Cowgirl and doggystyle.

Come with your skills and sadness, and we'll hit platinum together.

"Whatcha gonna do when Sulkamania runs wild on you?!"

Current mood:  rejuvenated

I have willingly thrown up a white flag in a war that I have been endlessly fighting. Though I walk away with scars and memories, I walk with pride. I walk with a new outlook. I walk, knowing I have not held aything back. I walk with only one regret: my defense creating an undeserved offense. And for that, I deeply apologize.

Like a soldier arriving home from war, I strive to become a new person, with new aspirations, new hopes, new values and a new appreciation for love, life and most importantly, friendship. I am also upping rank from Private to Lieutenant.

Thanks (for everything) and sorry (for everything else), (Beatrice Miyake). You are worth the fight. Let's go get a hot dog and play some catch...when the skies clear, that is.

Love,

Lieutenant (Guillermo Garrabido)
