The Chicago Conspiracy

Directed By Subversive Action Films

The Chicago Conspiracy is a documentary three years in the making. The project was filmed in Chile, and the story extends into the Mapuche indigenous lands of Wallmapu. The concept for the film was born with the death of a former military dictator. We celebrated in the streets of Santiago with thousands of people after hearing the news: General Augusto Pinochet was dead. His regime murdered thousands and tortured tens of thousands after the military coup on September 11, 1973. We celebrated both his death and the implication that the political and economic system which put him in power might itself be mortal. We began this documentary with the death of a dictator, but we continue with the legacy of a dictatorship.

The Chicago Conspiracy takes its name from the approximately 25 Chilean economists who attended the University of Chicago and other prestigious universities beginning in the 1960s to study under the neoliberal economists Milton Friedman and Arnold Harberger. After embracing Friedman’s neoliberal ideas, these economists returned to assist Pinochet’s military regime in imposing free market policies. They privatized nearly every aspect of society, and Chile soon became a classic example of free market capitalism under the barrel of a gun.

Detroit-based Hip-Hop artists, Invincible and Finale, rhyme about how short-term profit-driven urban development schemes displace communities in their city. A-Alikes speak with figures such as Chuck D, Joy Bryant, Rosa Clemente, M1, Umi, and Immortal Technique, asking the question, "How do oppressed people gain freedom: through participation in the political system or through armed rebellion?

Their lead single, "No Savior" delivers a different perspective to the current political structure, focusing more on self-empowerment versus the worship of political figures or historical icons.

Estilo Hip Hop is a feature length documentary that chronicles the trials and tribulations of three hip hop activists from Chile, Brazil, and Cuba who firmly believe that hip hop can change the world. As we delve into the lives of Guerrillero Okulto, Eli Efi, and Magia, we learn how each of them became leaders of social justice struggles responsible for mobilizing young people to become politically active. However, the personal issues affecting the three protagonists prove to be as overwhelming as the challenges posed by their political work. As the stakes assume a greater risk, Guerrillero, Eli Efi, and Magia have to make life-altering decisions that ultimately impact the course of their lives and that of the hip hop movement.

8pm-11pm...

Justifiable Homicide directed by Jon Osman and Jonathan Stack, US, 2001

discussion following afterwards with Margarita Rosario, mother of Anthony Rosario

Justifiable Homicide is a feature documentary based on the brutal murder of two Puerto Rican young men Antonio Rosario and Hilton Vega who were shot by two NYPD detectives in the Bronx in early 1995. One of the detectives was Mayer Giuliani's former body guard. The story follows Margarita Rosario, as she transforms from a mourning mother and Aunt to a powerful community activist, questioning the police officers' actions and raising the possibility of a cover-up.
A police inquiry affirmed the detectives' claims: that Rosario and Vega and third accomplice Freddie Bonilla (who survived the shooting) were shot while perpetrating an armed robbery. According to the report, the detectives opened fire in self-defense after the alleged robbers instigated a shoot-out. As far as the NYPD was concerned, the incident was over. Case closed, justifiable homicide.
Margarita Rosario, doubting the police version and realizing that one of the detectives who shot her son served as Mayor Giuliani's body guard in 1993, seeks help from the Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB), and independent city agency whose responsibility is to serve as watchdog over the NYPD. After a lengthy invesstigation, the CCRB report affirmed that the two detectives used excessive and unnecessary force. The City's response? The CCRB director along with the lead investigators are forced to resign.
An independent Pathologist hired by the Margarita Rosaio also counters the police version, demonstrating that all the shots struck the victims in their backs as they lay prone on the floor and not from the front as th City Medical Examiner's and the police had claimed.
With a legal system unwilling to address these profound inaccuracies, Margarita takes her anger to the streets, organizing protests and rallies. She soon realizes that there are many others who have lost family members to police action. Margarita responds by organizing Parents Against Police Brutality, to unify their struggle against a that sems to be stacked against them.
Margarita's words still echo loud, "I can not bring my son back but I can work to prevent other
parents from suffering a similar loss".

Have you heard the story of Eric Hernandez, the police
officer that was recently shot and killed by another
police officer in the Bronx?  What would have happened had he
been a white police officer?  If it was a white man,
holding a gun to the head of a black teenager in the
Bronx, they would have assumed he was a cop, based on
the realities that there arent too many white people
in East Tremont who aren't cops. But what the other cop saw was a young latino in a violent situation. The young men shown
on camera beating him up are being demonized by the press
and the police. While they were wrong, they didnt kill
that man. Three bullets from another NYPD officer
killed him. Our perspective is that Eric Hernandez
shouldve never been a cop. When he got killed, his own
teammates, another Latino trained by the Police to
follow procedure shot him dead. How many of us go to
Iraq and die? How many young Latinos and Blacks get
killed on the frontlines? There's been a sharp
increase in the percentage of Latinos joining the
police force. The NYPD recruits with some of the same
incentives that the armed forces do. In a city, where
education opportunities are scarce and unemployment is
high, joining the NYPD for many of our young people
becomes an obvious choice. Meanwhile the news showed yesterday that some rookie cops are getting food stamps cuz the pay is so low. As we see the government dividing and conquering our communities, it
is our people who suffer.
We did a song for Eric Hernandez...we hope it brings
light to these issues.

Report from the Bronx:

We showed up at The Point at like 9am......and waited for Chavez to show up. The Point is a small spot and there was about 15 community organizations there. I went there with no idea what exactly was going down. All I knew was that we had to set up a table or display of the organizing work we do at Youth Ministries for Peace and Justice. So here we are, like everyone else in the courtyard of The Point, feeling a little tense because of all the FBI that was around and all the press. There was more press than community folks, there was local, national and international up in there. The atmosphere got a bit more relaxed when my brothers the Welfare Poets started playing some music. So Chavez and Congressman Jose Serrano come in and theyre mobbed by the Press. He then took like 10 minutes with each community group. I was impressed that he took the time to talk to every group there. He asked everyone their names and seemed genuinely interested in each organization. When he came to our table, I was real relaxed. The first thing he did was ask me about my MIR shirt. MIR stands for Leftist Revolutionary Movement, which was a militant/guerilla group my father was a member
of in Chile in the 70s. I think right off top cuz of the shirt, Chavez knew he was dealing with someone that had their life dedicated to this. He said Viva Chile and Viva Allende! I had lots of flyers of events we do, and he asked about some of the Hip Hop work we do, I told him Hip Hop started in the area he was visiting and he seemed to be surprised as if perhaps he learned something new. He was mad open off of our Environmental Justice campaign that we do around cleaning up the Bronx River. He then brought over Felix Rodriguez, the President and CEO of Citgo and promised to fly us out to Venezuela to meet with him and figure out how he can help in strategizing the clean up of the Bronx River. He said Citgo would fund us. Citgo is Venezuelan owned and the third largest oil company in the world. I think it has to be capitalist to survive in the markets, but having the third largest oil comapny on your side cant be a bad thing. He spent mad time at our table, I would say about 25 minutes. We all then went to see him speak at L.P.A.C. in the Bronx...He started off his speech by saying it was an honor to be in The Bronx, the home of the Yankees and the place where he had learned that Hip Hop started. He then said" Hugo Chavez is Hip Hop. Yo soy hip hop." The crowd laughed and then he said.."im serious, i had a big ole afro when I was younger and my close frends called my Goofy, cuz i was skinny and i got big feet." His speech was not mainstream or middle ground at all. He made open calls for socialism, he openly blasted the war and touched on Katrina, and spoke of how Cuba evacuated 2.1 million people and the U.S. couldnt do the same for its people., he said "capitalism is the root of all evil" Which is the truth!!!!
He did say sumthin about George Washington, but this was on almost his third hr. of talking and I suffer from severe A.D.D. and by this time i wasnt as attentive a listener as i was in the beginning. He touched on the Bronx River work we do like 6 times, so I guess he might be serious. He said he has a dream to come back here and bathe in the river. I thought the speech was real dope....nuthin bout no JFK and nuthin at all conservative.....matter fact quite the opposite, he was talking bout bringing oil to the Bronx without a middleman....straight to the masses....Hope its not just talk...
i think people were really happy to have him here cuz of what he means to Latin America and even the rest of the world......
He openly defys the US government.....
he has oil, which is power...
he has built a strong alliance with Cuba...
he has brought hope back to a region that has been severly attacked and defeated throughout history...
Latin America may very well be the new middle east...in the sense that the US is very scared of the "turmoil" Chavez is creating...
they say he is a threat to the region.....and i think theyre right...a threat to poverty, to unemployment, to injustice.....
viva chavez!!!
long live the bolivarian revolution!!!
sorry so long....
just thoughts...
respect...

I'm going to be on this televison show called Nueva Estrella......

it's funny cuz it's this American Idol type show, but for Univision and CBS....its pretty dope cuz they'll be showing the semi-finals and finals at the same time...on Spanish tv and on Gringo tv....

another thing is that amongst the guys I am the only MC...

so i really didnt fit in...

as far as the women contestants...

WOW!

its like you gotta be fine to be in the competition......

So yeah...they are also making it into a reality show for Univision....

Sundays are usually time to reflect and plan. reflect on the wildness of your weekend and then plan on how to have a productive week........so that you can party your ass off next weekend all over again. Today a racist old white man in Times Square called me a "spic" under his breath cuz i guess i got in his way.... I turned around and said "what the fuck did you say?" He said, " I told you to get out of my way." My boy Camachito's cousin who was visiitng from Philly.... said " you called him a spic, liar..." and then proceeded to give him a super soccer kick in his ass... the old man stumbled and yelled "get the fuck outta my country....you fuckin&*^$$..@@" we laughed it off and went to ESPN zone. morale of the story: dont call me a spic and you wont get your ass kicked.....
