The present moment in the life of the Bull is one of reflection. Lately each of our members has been kept excruciatingly busy with all kinds of non-Bull pursuits. Some of you may not know that 3 out of 5 members have other bands which keep them really busy, (Dylan and Pete are in Los Duggans and Steve is in Killing Cassanova, as well as several other bands because he is a musical beer-whore.) In addition, Dylan and myself have created a new magazine called FarWest Almanac (http://www.myspace.com/farwestalmanac) which is another big workload. Nevertheless we continue to generate new songs and have been introducing them in our live sets, and have had some great shows lately including the Ink N Iron Festival (pictures posted- thanks to Jorge Vargas www.jmvfoto.com). We just added a bunch of dates for the next couple of months from LA to OC to Topanga, and we are really looking forward to these being some of our best shows/ parties yet. It feels good to be kept so busy doing the things we love to do. When I look back over the last several years I can't help but feel proud of what we have done thus far on our journey as a group. It also makes me proud to see all the side projects of our members doing well and the magazine generating so much interest, because our ethos has always been to do everything we can to nurture the community and not just ourselves. The amount of work it takes just to keep a band together, let alone thrive, is kind of crazy, but somehow we have all demonstrated the capacity to weather the storm and continue to grow and progress. I can't help but feel thankful for all the amazing things we have seen and experienced. We are now looking forward to creating a bunch of new songs and recording some new tracks. Ever forward thru the madness... Eric

Well kids, we are getting on the road. Damn exciting it is, we have a real nice tour all laid out and we are going to be living the dream. If we survive this we might make it to the next level of banddom, whatever that is. Since getting picked up by Big Bender Records for the release of "Manifesto" we have been getting lots more love all around. Hence the red rose in the Bull's mouth. The label is located in Colorado so we have to go out there to say "Hi", and get high, up in the Rockies. Oct. 12 and 13. We appeared on "Frosty, Heidi and Frank" and kicked some major ass... 6 stays and 1 go is a pretty damn good result for a show where bagging is generally the rule. Thanks for all who listened and called in and thanks to KLSX and Frosty Heidi and Frank for the opportunity to expose ourselves to the world a bit. We are also psyched that our music is reaching the ears of those it was intended for up in Northern Cal. It seems they like our tune "Growerman" up there, it speaks to their hearts, souls and livelihoods....getting lots of airplay on KMUD up there and we are doing their Halloween show Oct. 27. Plus everything inbetween...see our page for all the details.... See ya on the road! D'Bull

Hello calves, heffers, steer, and all the other bovine creatures of the night, we got news for ya and ya might as well hear it. The life of a band is a never ending minefield of tumolt, unfortunately, and our band is no exception. We keep changing members like my dog changes food into smelly little turds. That is how it goes. We have been recording and working our asses off in the studio for about a year now, and still do we have an album to show for it? No. But we are keeping the faith, brothers and sisters, and we know that with tenacious and intelligent application of effort we will ultimately prevail. It should not be more than a few more months now...we are shooting for a Spring release and tour....pray for us! A little more info: the new album is sounding great so far. It will include 12 or 13 original songs from the Old Bull catalogue. It is being worked on in Santa Monica at the studio of Steve McCormick. Keep an eye out for a bunch of shows coming up with Los Duggans: Dec. 30th at The Pike Bar in Long Beach (New Year's warm-up party), Jan. 3 ai Ireland's 32 in Van Nuys (New Year's cool-down party and benefit to send Los Duggans to Nashville), and Jan. 5th at The Lava Lounge in Hollywood (party for the hell of it cuz it's Friday and also to help them Duggies some more...)
The plan is to tour to support the album, we will see what the Gods think of that plan! Anybody who would like to make a donation to help us make that a reality please do.....we need some money. Not a lot, but we shure do need something or we aint gonna make it.
Peace in your dome and thanks for readin' along.....

Well, here it is folks: just about all the news that's fit to print....but if you were fortunate enough to witness our recent show at Abuelita's, you already know about some of the shit that aint!.....Gotta tell you people, if you think this rock and roll shit is easy you got another thing coming. The year of the Rooster taught us that. Long live the Dog!
It has been a very eventful 2006, so far.....and here, I, Old Bull P. McGillicuddy III, will do my damndest to tell you all about it. Within limits of course.
For starters, there has been much upheaval in the lineup but somehow, The Bull has managed to keep up the furious pace without missing a beat. They lost their bass player to early retirement, but in almost no time at all, their new bass player emerged from the mist, clad in the purest shimmering Samite, holding aloft a P bass from the bosom of the water, and there were some who called him.....Steve! He learned 15 songs in two practices.....and emerged triumphant. The Bull salutes him and welcomes him into the family with much joy and gratitude.
It seems that wherever they turn, there is something good even with the rough bad shit, and they've been fortunate to have a pool of musicians to draw from as special guests. They were joined at Ronnie Mack's Barn Dance at El Cid by amazingly talented fiddler Mike Starr and also by incredible lead guitarist Randy Chance, who teaches guitar up in Topanga Canyon. Future guests are to include Kenny Kazman...and more tba! Thank you to our extended family of pickers and fiddlers.
The Bull is currently back in the studio. Working on three new songs with producer/ engineer/ amazing musician and songwriter Steve Mccormick. The plan is to release these songs as a new EP which will include "Growerman," "The Hard Part," and "Zachary" by the beginning of May. Please pray for us to actually achieve that schedule. Many have failed before...and there but for the Grace of God go I!
Lots of new tunes being written and eventually we will catch up with all the turmoil and play more and more of them for y'all at our live shows.
In other news, at our gig at Abuelita's on January 28th, which was also a Chinese New Year's Day celebration party, welcoming in the Year of the Dog, we officially retired our version of "I Wanna Be Your Dog." Out of respect to the Dog. It had an illustrious run, and if you were not lucky enough to catch it live, I do feel for you, but there will be a replacement announced shortly. Prepare yourselves!

The story of Old Bull, pt. 1: Way back in early 2003, out of the ashes of a really crappy band which called itself Uncle Monkey Bone due to no fault of any of the members of Old Bull, who wanted to call the band Tres Roaches, the seeds of Bull were coagulatin' in the crustaceous minds of one Nate Macleery and Eric Rasmussen. At first they dabbled in several different styles, but soon found themselves pulled ever more persuasively toward the twangy, neo-traditional country music they had grown to love with a lot of help from the likes of Uncle Tupelo and Richard Buckner. It seemed an unlikely venture, and it still does, living in LA at a time when country is almost synonymous with "lame" and, as far as thay knew, there was zero audience or music scene to support such an undertaking. But undertake they did, and with a little help from Craigslist they soon found that the universe's blessing was upon their mission. In short order, they met up with a certain "Whiskey" Pete Sheffer, an import from Alaska who had grown up in LA (lower Alabama) and had a drum kit and the ability to play a country beat. Which is probably harder than you think! Dear reader. They also managed to meet Lon Miller, who just happened to be a bass playin' audio engineer type who lived right around the corner and had some time to kill. Dylan Wilkerson was the next to join the Bull as the boys felt need of some rhythm guitar and this youngster from Ann Arbor MI could also play the banjo and turned the whole band onto Dock Boggs, who as we all now know, kicks ass. Scott Grusin played with the band one time at a birthday party for Andrew R, brother to lead singer Eric, and was hooked. "I caint hardly imagine how I got by before I joined this band!" he excitedly exclaimed when contacted for a comment. One can only wonder what might be in store for this pack of raving lunatics as they embark on a tour of the West coast this coming Spring.

It's bloggin time agin down in the land of The Bull, and we couldn't be happier to update y'all on the current events. Seems like as good a time as any and we surely haven't done so in a while....Currently we are busily planning "Laddies of the Canyon" for Aug. 20th with some good friends. Haven't done a show in a while and this is a good one to break the fast so to speak. For those of you who have kept up, we have actually been dilligently working to mend some problems with the original mix and this party is to commemorate the latest installment of that work-in-progress.It does sound a lot better now thanks to a lot of hard work, and we are ready to send it out now to the various people who should be hearing it! It is exciting and should be interesting to hear some reactions. For those of you who don't know, the tracks on the cd are "End of Days," "Things I Used to Be," "Soldier in the War," "The Hummer Song," "Drunk Woman Blues," and "Dead Blind Love." So there are some tunes on there which have not yet been posted online, although they may be at some future Very Special Moment, according to our Bullish Soothsayer.....

I just realised I hadn't updated our loyal friends and family on the happenings of late in the land of The Bull.
It's been crazy as hell, but we might still actually manage our goal of getting a cd done by next weekend's "big gig", Topanga Days. We finished the main vocals yesterday and just need a few more tracks before we edit and mix in a hurry and get it to the printers.
We are also getting a bunch of new shirts made in the hope of sellin some at Topanga Days. For some reason the girls seem to like 'em. I have a theory about that, actually, I think it's because of The Bull's penis, which is featured clearly and in an anatomically correct fashion on our logo. This powerful symbol draws women in, albeit subliminally, to the fold of The Bull. And let me ask you this: what good is a Bull without a few females around?
On that note, we have another announcement to make regarding the band lineup. We have added our first female member! Eliza Jane Schneider is an amazing fiddler and vocalist who does all kinds of amazing things including fronting her own band and being a voiceover artist. Add to that list that she is now a bona fide member of The Bull. This is no easy task mind you for any girl to work with seven dudes and we are real proud of her and want to thank her for lending us her amazing talents and being a part of the ongrowing Old Bull family!!
Another HUGE announcement for The Bull: we have scheduled an appearance LIVE ON THE AIR with 88.9 KXLU's Toe Tappin' Music with Cowboy Nick!! This is to happen on June 25th at 11:00 PM, and we are real grateful for the opportunity to do this. We are going to come in and do a set and talk with Nick about matters which are pertinent to life. Hell Yeah!!
Our new cd which is almost done now will be retailing for a measly $8, I am sure our webmaster genius, Peter Sheffer, will whip up some fancy marketing for that soon too so watch for it. The tracks to be included are 4 new ones including The Hummer Song, End of Days, Things I Used to Be, and Soldier in the War, and more...
In addition to all that, we are getting set up for PayPal so that we can take our own orders for merch and stuff....which kicks ass as well.....
So that's about it for now, hopefully see y'all at Topanga Days!!

Please note the year on this blog. (2005) It has been left here for historical reference.....don't get it twisted with the present and/ or future Topanga Days festivals which we are probably playing as well!
The Bull is super excited to announce that we will be appearing at this years Topanga Days festival on Sunday, May 29th at 11:45 AM. If you don't know, Topanga Days is a really fun outdoor music craft and beer festival held every Memorial Day weekend. They decided to do a country/ roots music day on Sunday and of course we had to be there!! We play on the BIG stage and this is a huge event so we are really exited and thankful to the people who run Topanga Days for signing us up! We are kicking off the festivites on Sunday, the "Country Day", and we will play until about 1:00 PM. After us, our friends the Topanga Mountain Tree-o take the stage to show us what a little old fashioned bluegrass is all about. Later on, we will be blessed to have John McEuen (of THE NITTY GRITTY DIRT BAND!!) and his son. We are super honored to share the stage with a man who commands such an impressive musical legacy!!! The festivities end before sundown and if you don't arrive early you'll miss THE BULL and get the horns so come down quick and lose that frown!!!
