"The Koala Fires have all the hallmarks of good pop songwriting nailed down: infectious hooks, well-placed melodic shifts, and, perhaps best of all, songs that are exactly the length they need to be." http://www.tinymixtapes.com/The-Koala-Fires

Hello everyone it's Matt,
We've gotten a lot of interest through twitter (follow us if you want to! http://twitter.com/koalafires) as to how we got our name and the meaning behind it, So, I thought I would write just a few words about it. It has come to mean quite a lot to me, and it's kind of a funny story as how it came to be in the first place.
One day a few years ago (Before the band was officially started, but while I was in between musical endeavors) I was talking with Dan (Bass) on the phone as he was living in Florida at the time. He was listing off band name ideas he had in his head and on the list was the name "The Qualifiers" I misunderstood him and thought he said "Koala Fires" and I said something along the lines of "That is the best band name I have ever heard, and the next band I start will be named that"
I started doing some internet research to see if anyone had that name already, and what I ended up finding was a large amount of stories about Koalas and their troubles in the bush fires of Australia. Terrible stories detailing the fact that the Koalas are too slow to run away from the spreading fire, so they instead climb the trees to try to escape. While they are up in the trees, it is said you can hear them screaming from miles away. Terrible, I know. However it became a very clear metaphor to me for our humanity. We trap ourselves up these trees, as the flames crawl closer, screaming for help. Sometimes getting burned up and reborn, sometimes getting rescued. Sometimes getting scarred by the fire but still clambering on.
I got a little obsessed with it (as I do with things) and started thinking of the nature of fire, and also how we use it as a way of trying to define things we don't quite understand (Hell, love, passion) It seems to be a common metphor for all of us, and really makes clear how these Koala stories often times parallel our own.
The funny part of this story is that at almost every show we have ever had, someone has come up to me and told me a story of theirs about how they were telling someone about the band, and the person was confused as to whether it was "Qualifiers" or "Koala Fires".
I think it's nice to see it come full circle considering that's how the name was conceived.
Thanks for reading, and for listening. We're working hard on new music for you, and can't wait to share it.
-- Matt

Our very own drummer, Mike Paolucci, saved a family from their burning house. We sure are proud of that guy. http://nky.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=%2FAB%2F20090120%2FNEWS0103%2F301200040
