Been a while since my last post on here but since then MOMMA'S MAN is now in theaters! In case you didn't read my last blog or are just too lazy to go back, MM premiered at Sundance Film Festival this year and went on to many more fests and eventually it's opening. I play the role of Laura. I also have a tiny bit of This Song's For You in it.
It opened at the Angelika Film Center here in NYC August 22nd and is still running there, recently opened at the Laemmle in LA and is scheduled to go to a bunch of other cities soon. It also got fantastic press- Film of the Week in TimeOutNY, and A in Entertainment Weekly, 4 stars in the NY Post, an online and in paper review in the NY Times(also a clip), LA Times, LA Weekly- etc. etc. You can see the trailer here-:http://movies.nytimes.com/movie/452112/Momma-s-Man/trailers
Also recording my newest songs - they are none you've ever heard. And they should be done soon. I've upgraded from the basement to my downtown studio. Alright Alright. So they'll be posted soon. And some more stuff I can't talk about yet. In the meantime check out the film!
Enjoy & be well.
DV
& of course Jelly.

Yay! Momma’s Man, the very special film(read, then watch to see why) that I play a supporting role in, that I repeatedly have blogged about, that preemed at Sundance Film Festival 2008 where it got tons of buzz & continued excellent press, www.mommasman.com just made it’s NY debut at the MoMa for the prestigious New Directors/New Films Exhibition (and to a bunch of my family friends, friends, collaborators and fellow New Yorkers)
AND it was also recently picked up by the very cool Think Films www.thinkfilm-inc.com so it will be getting theatrical release soon!
I will keep you posted when I find out where it’s going. So if you missed it at Sundance, NYC (Rotterdam or Sarasota Film Fest where it also went) you can see it.
To the big screen,
DV
PS-Also, a small bit of This Songs For You is in it & New songs coming soon...

Hey Hey! So I told you all I would leak more info about the film I acted in in LA in April - it got into Sundance! where it is world premiering and it's called MOMMAS MAN. I play the emotional part of Laura - and got to act across from Richard Edson-think the guy who stole the Ferrari in Ferris Bueller's or Jim Jarmusch's Stranger than Paradise-Eddie and Matt Boren who recurs as Stewart on How I Met your Mother among other things. Aza Jacobs the director/screenwriter was listed as One of Filmmaker's Magazine 25 faces of Independent film for 2007 and the producers also did Half Nelson and Maria Full of Grace like I had mentioned in my initial blog about it all. Great cast and crew= good peeps. Really exciting. You can read more about it if you google it. If you are out at Sundance this year the schedule is now up so check it out! I am still trying to get out there for it myself and maybe booking another gig too. I feel lucky to be at Sundance again with work(you may remember my drunken blog from last year after opening for Ozomatli-holy shit-has it really been a year?!). I'm sure I will have another one if I make it out there after all the festivities. Oh and speaking of holy I am listening to Matisyahu..again...who I saw at Roseland during Chanukah with my buddy which is one way I celebrated:) at his amazing show where the Wailers opened! Then I met one of the dancers(and if you have seen his shows it is a far out image) on the street by a Mitzvah truck on my stumbling way home from a partay recently after. Hi Chaim. If you were telling the truth. Fun Fun. Love to you from this crazy city.

Dana Varon Back to My Roots (self-released) Well, what do we have here? A young, beautiful songstress with a mind of her own. Initially, upon hearing her debut, released all by herself, "Back to my Roots" one was reminded, a la the vocal stylings, of Hope Sandoval, the dreamy, doe-eyed vocalist for Opal and Mazzy Star. With Dana Varon, though, one gets a more personal record, one which ends up speaking with one voice, one person's expressions and that consistency helps create both continuity and celerity. Two songs, "Jelly" and "Don't Shut Me Out" both stand out to me – speaking of "Jelly," there is also a person with the moniker 'Jelly' who helps out vocally on this album – there was just something catchy about both tunes in different ways, respectively, but they weren't catchy in a pop sort of way, not "hook"-driven, etc. Just something about those two songs that was hard to articulate; you'll just have to listen for yourself to find out what I'm talking about. Another great tune that stood out for me was an uncredited song (figures, huh?) As far as the back of the CD goes, there are only 8 songs listed and "Goodbye to Yesterday" was the last one to be listed and so I assume that "Goodbye to Yesterday" was the slow, acoustic and wistful goodbye of a tune. Then, to my surprise there came another song – track nine and isn't it funny that this surprise, untitled track was one of the best ones on the CD! In spite of the fact Dana has a clear, tuneful, well-enunciated and just plain beauteous vocal range, she's not just your average, everyday chanteuse; Dana's got talent, she is a musician for real; on Back to My Roots Varon, besides singing, plays "guitars, bass lines, percussion & other ear candy…" she also, besides writing all the songs herself, produced the CD too. It just shows that the only reason you see so little of this independence in a talented woman – even in today's "Hillary 4 Prez" society must be due to some hierarchical machinations or some just hard-headed resistance to change or just plain hatred from the "establishment", run, of course, by old men (you know, that "vast, right-wing conspiracy" ha-ha). Talent, motivation and originality make all the difference; prettiness helps, but beauty, whether authentic or surgically enhanced – fake – beauty is ephemeral and fleeting. Dana Varon, man or woman is a talented musician and hopefully will continue to grow, musically and lyrically and that this won't be the last we hear of her. I would be happy if her next musical effort was just better than this one which is always – or always should be – the goal of any musician/singer/band. So yes, just got back from an amazing trip to LA where I was sent to film a movie! ( yeah, I am an actor too) with a very talented crew, cast and story. Produced by guys that did Half Nelson, Maria Full of Grace, etc..
It was so beautiful there, stayed up in the hills with hawks, hummingbirds and history (recently finished the book Laurel Canyon about rock stars up there etc.,)-- definitely a change from NYC, well, at least the weather's good here right now.
Anyway, it's a juicy film & role and will keep you posted on when it will be viewable.
Also wrote a new song To Hollywood a little while ago, ha,-that I played for the first time live at my Sundance gig-which I'm recording now. Will leak it all soon.
Love & LA:) DV

Goodbye To Yesterday got played on the very cool Nefarious Bovine Radio podcast Episode 123-Back to Normal--ha, so happy to be part of that episode:) It was played by Sean -the coolest cow around.
He mentioned that it feels like you are sitting in your living room with me playing to you when listening to my CD (or in actuality it was my basement:) and other fun stuff-check it out! It feels like that listening to his show as well. It's warm, comfy and real. Plus, he's always out seeing new and acqainted artists. Things have been crazy so didn't get to blog about this until now even though it was played a couple of weeks ago but you can click HERE to hear it all. You can also buy GTYand my album on my page with your credit card now-they just added that feature-and you should:)
And since we're on the topic of cool cows, I am giving a shout out to Penelope-my beautiful adopted cow at the Farm Sanctuary she lives at now. Click there to learn more about the sad treatment of farm animals and help.
Moo & Love,
Dana & Jelly.

...and it has 2 parts! It was so fun to answer the questions via email which was how Brad (Filicky), writer of CMJ and writer/creator of the Rising Star itself IRT magazine, being ever so innovative and I conducted it. I did it during downtime at work and I learned that I have a heck of a lot to say (it's pretty long!) and that therefore I am not so good at giving short or one subjected answers) but if ya want that and honesty I'm your girl! Check it OUT -click here here to read Part 1 but be sure to click on Blogs to read Part 2, which is very juicy, and also to see the rest of the super cool site:

Well, I am sitting here in my Park City hotel room post show as the snow flurries down in an Amstel Light buzz (one of the event's sponsors). It was amazing to be able to open for Ozomatli today -it was snowing and cold and my fingers were numb as I played my guitar but it was refreshing and fun to sing at the bottom of a mountain on a stage where skiiers where stopping by...definitely different than New York! There may be some video floating around of a song or two soon. We'll see. I played a new song called To Hollywood today for the first time, it's going to be on my new album where I am in the process of recording it and seemed very fitting for an event during the Sundance Film Fest;) Then I will post it. Oh yeah and I heard P DIddy caught it. I also met Saint Bernards, I had a stuffed one I loved growing up. But I miss Jelly. Me.
