FACT mix 60 is the work of Joe Cowton, who records exemplary house-infused dubstep under the names Kowton and Narcossist.

Cowton comes from the Lake District, but is now based in Bristol. His music "attempts to incorporate both the rhythmic energy of garage and the depth and intensity of techno", and if you aren't already up on 'Sunblind', his stunning single for Mindset last December, then you're missing out: it's one of the most driving, heavy house tracks we've heard in the last twelve months, except for after the second drop, when it turns into the best donk track ever - this is a very good thing.

Judging by the recent tracks of his we've heard, especially 'Countryman' and '+ 46', people could soon be talking about Cowton the same way they are the likes of Peverelist and Appleblim. His FACT mix features Theo Parrish, Move D, Omar-S, Karizma, Indigo, Scuba, Jus Wan alongside his own dubs, and couldn't be better suited to the summer days ago. You lucky types.

Firstly sorry to anyone who expected to see me at Under_Score on the 7th - my lung collapsed three days before the night and for the following week even moving round the house was a challenge. Was gutting not only not getting to play but also missing the chance to see October. Hopefully we can re-arrange another date for it. Next month (7th March) they have Sven Weisemann which will be fantastic I'm sure.

The Brothel Creeper 12" is doing well, its sold out on Boomkat now and at Hardwax too which must be a good sign. They've still a few in at Rooted and Chemical, Red Eye etc..

The new Mindset 12" is due on the 3rd March, this one is Indigo/Synchro and will be in all the usual places. Really into the A-side Runes - very Dub Techno influenced but suitably aggresive and rolling.

NARCOSSIST - Brothel Creeper, Clandestine Cultivations

The absolute pick of this week's dubstep selections comes courtesy of
Narcossist, collecting three of his finest productions for Clandestine
Cultivations. We've long been aware of the man's burgeoning talent so
it's wicked to see some recognition on wax with some stone cold
classics given a proper heavyweight pressing. Sidestepping any populist
tropes, 'Brothel Creeper' is a pure heads tune for fans of Burial, El-B
or Zed Bias with dark garage breaks pivoting sharply around deep set
subbass providing the rhythmic chassis, with slashes into various
darkside rave signals balanced by dubtech chords and a pervasively
uneasy atmosphere made for late night listening. It's a LOT. 'Targets'
lightens the mood with a killer garage mover skipping like the
melancholy offspring of Steve Gurley and Kode 9, before 'Cold Brew'
shuts the lights again with a tech-stepping garage flex that's in a
league of it's own. If you like your dubstep to be dark, sensual, and
rhythmically irresistable get on this 12" soon as. Highly Recommended!

Narcossist/Kowton

Joe Cowton aka Narcossist, aka Kowton, comes from the Lake District but now lives in Bristol along with everybody else we write about. Apparently his music is an attempt "to incorporate both the rhythmic energy of garage and the depth and intensity of techno", but for me, his music isn't intense - there's no Marcel Dettman (who Cowton is supposedly a fan of)-style pummel, it can be driving but it never quite thuds…instead, what appeals about his records is the groove, the swing that resonates in tracks like 'Sunblind' - probably the best thing he's done to date, with big donk-y chords pushing everything along, under flatwaves of techno FX.

That's out now on Mindset, but also make sure to check his mix for Rob Booth's Electronic Explorations show where Cowton indulges his techno-dubstep-crossover agenda behind the decks, mixing Loefah with Plastikman, Kode 9 with Pole…

NARCOSSIST / LOGOS - Sunblind
MINDSET
12" // £6.49
DUBSTEP / GRIME

NARCOSSIST / LOGOS - Sunblind, MINDSET

To our knowledge, this is the first release from underground dubstep figure Narcossist, a name you may recognise if you've been checking Dusk & Blackdown's excellent Rinse FM show or checked any of Grievous Angel's on-point mixes available elsewhere on the net. Narcossist has been lauded for his finely produced rhythms which incorporate the kinky slink patterns of early Zed Bias, El-B or more recently Burial, with a love of Maurizio's M-Series or the Burial mixes and fresh deep techno from T++ and Dettmann for a blend that positions him in a neat spot of his own. 'Sunblind' is a Narcossist classic already, having done the rounds on myspace for some time, it was a logical progression to a vinyl pressing for this crafty blend of auld garage riffs, echo chamber FX and a properly tight 4/4 flex that deserves a spot in every future stepper's box. 'Slow' on the flip displays another side to his programming skills, with constantly shifting 2-step patterns executed to perfection with a warehouse spooked sound design. His remix of Logo's 'Frontier Dub' again switches styles to an irresistable deep and dubby house bump, done Berlin style with sprightly chords and a kinked Detroit flow that show this man is defintiely one to watch. Tip!

INDIGO - Set To Cycle / Let It Rain

Melancholy dub tech variants from Indigo and Mindset Recordings with a debut release directed towards the fertile middle ground between dubstep, techno and related rhythm science. A-side 'Set To Cycle' strikes at a striding 140bpm dub techno pace with offset snares, and sombre dub chords lending a deeper blue atmosphere to a promising track largely influenced by Peverelist, F, or Mala. 'Let It Rain' on the flip is an altogether smarter cut, this time taking it's influences from something a little more complex and electronica debted, with a dipping swing set somewhere between T++ and Toasty. Well set.
