SO, i was really feeling ranty the other day and I wrote this...... I have nowhere else to put it, so read!!
On July 4th, 1776, America declared its independence from Great Britain, dissolving political ties to England, taking on individual responsibility, ending excessive taxation, and above all: promising equality and freedom. Over the years, through tough times, constitutional amendments, "progressive" tax plans, and social welfare programs, American society has become unfortunately dependent on liberal ideals rather than the ideas that founded this great nation. Government has become increasingly large and hard to escape; conservative individualism has died; personal responsibility has been long forgotten. Liberalism has become the new conservatism, socialism the new liberalism. The progressive movement has slowly, but surely, killed society as we once knew it. Like a disease, liberalism has infected almost every aspect of American society and with the help of President-Elect Barack Obama, it can only get worse.
I cannot pinpoint a specific time in American history that could be blamed for our disappointing fall into liberal abyss, but the latest election clearly shows a certain disregard for the American constitution. The Democrat party has broadened their control of congress and the senate, liberals maintaining their positions of power despite the lowest approval ratings in history. While the results of this election reflect the will of roughly half of America, the views of the elected liberals do not echo the ideals of the founding fathers. Many of the liberal members of congress, senate, and the future President refuse to recognize the second amendment and Mr. Obama has even made outlandish comments in the past about his hope for redistribution of wealth through the supreme court, a decision that would require power that the judicial branch was never previously permitted. The liberal majority promises bigger government, expansion of powers, and socialist policies that once enacted are terribly hard to escape.
The cancer of liberalism has spread to all three branches of government, virtually unopposed by true conservatives. Over the years conservative Republicans have been left on the side of the road, while "middle of the line" politicians like Senator McCain are center stage. These "moderate" Republicans, while repeatedly praised in the increasingly liberal environment of Washington, are ultimately pushed aside when true conservative values get in the way of liberal progressivism. What could be a simple cure [conservatism], becomes an accessory to the illness, leaving conservative Americans to feel let down and disappointed in the political system.
Though it is entirely possible for America to continue to slip away, there is some hope for recovery. America is resilient by nature and it is entirely possible to see the nation fall right back into its original conservative ways. Depending on how the Obama administration goes, it could be sooner rather than later. Without President Jimmy Carter, there never would have been the conservative backlash of the Reagan years. Perhaps the same formula will work in 2012. If there is one good thing about having a left-wing extremist in the white house, it is that radical policies cannot go uncriticized. If things do not go well in the next four years, expect a rebellion. Conservative voices will not keep quiet; unconstitutional principles will not be ignored. The founding ideals of America are hard to ignore and they will not be forgotten. Though at times we, as Americans, fail to embrace the greatness of those principles, they never fail us. In the end, they reflect what everyone wants: life, liberty, happiness. While they can be repeatedly walked on, they remain true, and truth will always prevail, even if it takes a revolution.
