BROUGHT IN FOR THE FIRST TIME

Fine/Metzger/Seru  SPLIT LP  Medusa's Lair $19.99

Filleted over two sides of wax, here we have a rare meet up of three of the brightest lights in the twin cities' musical orbit. On March 21, 2009, Paul Metzger - best known for his transcendental gypsy raga guitar and banjo meditations - jumped in the ring with percussionist Davu Seru and veteran multi-instrumentalist Milo Fine for an evening of uncompromising spontaneous composition. Medusa's Lair is stunning, inscrutably wily, living music. One time edition of 300 LPs pressed on 180 gram virgin vinyl." Milo Fine: Drum Set (Bowed Cymbals), B Flat Clarinet, Prepared Piano Remains, Voice; Paul Metzger: Modified Guitar; Davu Seru: Drum Set

Overstreet, Rev. Louis  lp  At St. Luke's Powerhouse  on  Mississippi $14.99

...Church Of God" Reissue of the Arhoolie LP recorded in 1962 at his church in Phoenix, AZ with a slightly alteRreedc torardcks listing. Includes 2 tracks previously unissued on vinyl. Recorded very live during a church service, Overstreet plays electric guitar & bass drum in an intense & driving style while his 4 sons & the

the theremin

Six Organs of Admittance cd  Manifestation  on  Strange Attractors $13.99

Released in '00, The Manifestation was a clear, one-sided vinyl 12” featuring a primitive etching of the sun on the B-side. The music is an extended raga of genre-defying madness, a dizzy melding of acoustic fingerstyle, shamanic chants, chimes, hand percussion, space jam & ghostly vocals that effectively blurs the cultural boundaries of eastern & western folk music. Completely remastered, the reissue is housed in a lovely 6-panel digipak foldout & includes 20+ minutes of music made exclusively for this reissue, plus hand-written project notes penned by Ben Chasny. Guest starring David Tibet of Current 93, who composed his vocal piece for exclusively for this reissue

FAHEY, JOHN: America 2LP $31.99

"Originally released in 1971, America is one of the artistic high points of John Fahey's career. And yet, for nearly 30 years it was not heard in its entirety, as what was originally intended as a double album was pared down to a single LP. 4 Men With Beards is proud to present the complete America double album, released on vinyl for the first time ever. Fahey himself had this to say about America: 'Out of all the songs I ever wrote, I consider only two of them 'epic' or 'classic' or in the 'great' category and they are both on this record.' Deluxe gatefold packaging that includes a reproduction of the original illustrated booklet. Limited edition of 3,000 numbered copies." 180 gram vinyl.

ANIMAL HOSPITAL: Memory 2LP $19.99

Double LP version on white vinyl with hand-stamped chipboard packaging. Limited, hand-numbered edition of 350 copies. "Animal Hospital is Kevin Micka's one-man musical recording and performance entity. Burying himself in a pile of electronics -- shelves of effects, mixing consoles, amps and delay units -- Memory is Kevin's latest venture into layered, processed guitar composition. Although composed in this experimental fashion, Memory is a completely realized recording -- a beautiful scape of shiny guitar tones, vocal washes, and dramatic build-ups, all of which cohere into a single musical vision. Memory is about as deliberate a title as you can get, and rightfully so. Recorded in an old bank in west Virginia, an antiquated movie theater lobby, apartments, studios, and Cape Cod, the album's realization is similar to a personal recollection of the past; a layered, non-linear, and often vague familiarity of places, things, people, known and unknown in our minds. Fueled by coffee and heartache, Memory serves as a highly personal account of its creator manifested into an amalgamation of musical themes, both delicate and brutal. Most notable about Memory is its intimacy -- the emotional thread tying his vast compositional approaches together. As an effort to connect Kevin's memories with ours and even to engage in one another's wanderings -- psychic exchanges between composer and listener -- Kevin searches out raw beauty within his repertoire of sounds. He performs guitar, drums, vocals, music boxes, and other gadgets with meticulous care; a detail for precision often discarded by experimental recordings."

ZURICH: Zurich LP $23.99

"Limited edition of 500 copies pressed at RTI and packaged in heavy duty jackets screen printed at Monoroid. Featuring members Tony Wilson (Knives ov Resistance), Neil Halstead (Slowdive/Mojave 3), & Sarah Peacock (Seefeel). Zurich began as a 1994 musical partnership between Neil Halstead then of Slowdive and Tony F. Wilson. The two recorded a handful of tracks together at a time when Wilson was co-promoting and DJing at the club/live night Quirky in South London where he booked acts including Pan Sonic, Hafler Trio and Autechre. Halstead was shortly to begin work on Slowdive's final and most experimental album, Pygmalion. Recorded at a time when the popularity of ambient techno was at its peak, these recordings are remarkably austere by comparison. Whilst 'A Harsh Truth' displays the Oriental gracefulness of a Sakamoto/Sylvian collaboration, 'Tzarist''s gothic industrialism shares more in common with the early works of Coil. Following the release of Pygmalion and Creation letting go of Slowdive, Halstead would disband Slowdive and abandon sound experimentation to create more song-based material in Mojave 3. Shortly thereafter, Wilson began collaborating with drum & bass producer and engineer Joe Gray on more rhythm based, yet still atmospheric productions. 'Too Scared to Breath' features the voice of Seefeel's Sarah Peacock and sounds not unlike prime Autechre and Aphex. Militia (Dynamic Warfare) on the other hand mirrors the post-metal dub of Techno Animal and Scorn. All of the recordings were lost until very recently when Touch recording artist Mark Van Hoen found the two tracks on old CD-R's and cassettes he was given by Wilson. Wilson produced and recorded in the Knives ov Resistance project for the Aurora Borealis label and is currently working on a project with Ted Parson (Swans/Prong)."

Tune-Yards: Bird-Brains LP $17.99

"Merrill came from parents who sewed their lives together with music, and at age seven she proceeded to hum her way through days. She hummed her way through the family record collection: Old Timey fiddling, Revolver, Django. She hummed her way through mid-'80's pop radio and an obsession with Christmas music. She hummed her way through folk music camp, through Smith College and a theater degree, through anarchist puppet training, through brazen, all-women a cappella singing, through heat rash in Kenya, through deeply scrutinized puppet performances in Europe, through her lonely, swirling 20s. The hum seems to have become a yell. In 2008 she released BiRd-BrAiNs, which she had recorded over a span of 2.5 years on a hand-held voice recorder. Sampling snippets of her life as a nanny on Martha's Vineyard and later as a young musician in noisy urban settings, she weaved sounds together to make substantial rhythms and then layered her ukulele and vocals over top." In hand-made sleeve.

Birdman, Bobby  cd  New Moods on  Fryk Beat f $14.99

Upbeat pop anthems jostle up against shimmering slow a cappella numbers, while New Orleans bounce, dancehall, & hyphy funnel noisily into each selfproduced pop number. Coastal Brake's vintage synthesizers set the pointillistic scene, blipping & popping around a near-Balearic rhythm like melancholy drops in a river, rising and falling and building to a shimmering climax. It?s not quite dance music - more like Tycho's soft-focus take on the escapist beauty of house music

DJ MEHDI: Red, Black & Blue: Some Remixes By DJ Mehdi CD $16.99

STARVING WEIRDOS W/ TOM CARTER & SHAWN DAVID MCMILLEN: Live At The Accident! LP $24.99

"Crazy 3-way collaboration from some of America's best underground musicians. Charalambides' Tom Carter is joined by Shawn McMillen, sometime member of Warmer Milks and Ash Castles On The Ghost Coast, with the added power of Starving Weirdos. This two track collaboration has been around since 2007 and it landed in my mailbox a few months back, and man, it's a real beauty. Side A is a total hypnotic slice of ravaged drone, the four musicians seamlessly blend their own styles of underground bliss outs to sheer perfection. Side B opens with a crazy loop of applause, waving back and forth with a growing repetitive plug-in to then opening it up to create new levels of total sonic weirdness. Slow shimmering black chasms engulf the positivity until it's awash with lo-fi scrapes and buzzing electrical nightmare. The loop eventually drops back in with total far gone chimes, jingling away at acid burnt psychedelic keys and a thundering bass loop. A totally bizarre jam, which just opens more potential ventures up for these artists. Hopefully we'll see more from this collaborative team soon. Limited to 400 in pro-printed wraparound sleeves."

CONRAD & GENESIS BREYER P-ORRIDGE, TONY: Taking Issue LP $23.99

"An exclusive vinyl release of the live violin collaboration between avant-garde legends Tony Conrad and Genesis Breyer P-Orridge featuring percussion by Morrison Edley. Presented by filmmaker Marie Losier and recorded live in January, 2009 at Issue Project Room in Brooklyn, NY. LP limited to 500 hand-numbered copies." Includes a full color insert featuring pictures and notes by Marie Losier.

NURSE WITH WOUND: Paranoia In Hi-Fi CD $5.99

With a nod and a huge gesture of respect towards the pioneering efforts of Virgin Records in the 1970s with the release of The Faust Tapes LP for 50p, here is a Nurse With Wound full length CD in a decent jewel case, with proper artwork that sells for 99p. This will only be available in high street shops, there will be NO mail order, either from Dirter, Andrew Liles or anyone of the usual mail-order outlets. That's the idea -- you have to go into a record shop to buy it. In today's world of downloads, free CDs with Daily Mail, and high street record retail dying on its arse, this is our way of doing our bit to get people to go into their local store. The shop owners won't be able to order the swimming pool on the strength of the profits from this, but it's hoped that it will make a few thousand NWW fans go into a shop that they might not have, and who knows, they might even buy a Coldplay CD while they're there. Info about the music as written by Andrew Liles is below, he says it's the greatest album ever made and he should know... Paranoia In Hi-Fi collects 30 years of Nurse With Wound recordings in one easy to swallow CD. This CD confirms what all Nurse With Wound followers have known for many years, and will open the ears for new listeners to the fact that Nurse With Wound have always been an outstandingly innovative and ceaselessly creative force. Never staying still NWW are unpredictable, disconcerting, humorous and always original. With a flagrant disregard and disinterest in musical styles, cliques or fashions the uniquely independent and autonomous NWW have made over 50 albums with no regard and no interest in their critical or commercial reception. Mixing the sublime with the ridiculous Steven Stapleton and NWW uncompromisingly carve their own distinct style that has a musical language and visual landscape entirely of its own. Drawing inspiration from far flung corners including DaDa, Perez Prado, Surrealism, Krautrock and a whole cascade of other ideas NWW have created a diverse back catalogue of material from ambient classics (Soliloquy for Lilith) to the disturbed (Homotopy to Marie) and many other easy listening nightmares. NWW is an idyllic and fascinating tropical island way out there on a limb, the visitors who make it to their shores seldom ever want to leave. Paranoia In Hi-Fi covers almost all of NWW's wild and eclectic sinister whimsy and shows that in Steven Stapleton's world everything is possible...possible, possible.

PRESTON & DANIEL MENCHE, JOE: Cerberic Doxology 12" $14.99

"Joe Preston and Daniel Menche's Cerberic Doxology represents a new LOW in collaborations. A new LOW in depth, a new LOW in bottom frequencies, and a new LOW in drone, noise, heavy, metal, Basso Profundo, and Gregorian Chant. Cerberic Doxology is an album of rich subtleties and dramatic textures: a dense, dark, tonal topography surveying the dizzying heights and cavernous depths of the human voice. Constructed of only sonorous and rumbling vowel sounds, its absence of consonants still resonates with layers upon layers of audible friction. This new version of Cerberic Doxology represents a work that is slightly shorter and quicker in pace to fit the vinyl format. What's presented, then, is a piece foregrounding the seamless mastery of Daniel Menche's ambient and textural recording work. Limited to 500 vinyl copies, the Cerberic Doxology EP is an 18-minute analog piece. The B-side of this limited edition pressing contains 20 different samples from the work featured in 20 separate locked grooves. Daniel Menche and Joe Preston appear as vocal co-collaborators with The Man Choir on SunnO)))'s Southern Lord release, Monoliths & Dimensions."

MENCHE, DANIEL: Kataract CD $17.99

Editions Mego presents a limited edition release by Portland, Oregon sound artist Daniel Menche. Daniel Menche: Waterfall recordings and electronics. All waterfall field recordings were captured around the Pacific Northwest of the USA, mixed and recorded throughout 2007-2009. Another sizzling power block from Menche, this time capturing the intense force of various Pacific Northwest waterfalls to create a mind-blowing audio sculpture. This single track slices its way through a sonic spectrum of over 39 minutes of high-end processing. One hell of a beauty and a beast! Packaged in stunning, almost disturbing artwork in an edition of 500.

GILBERT, BRUCE: This Way CD $17.99

This Way, originally released in 1984 on Mute, was UK guitarist Bruce Gilbert's first solo album, realized in that brief period between Dome winding down operations and Wire reforming for the first time. A stunning study of controlled ambience and subtle minimalism which is still regarded as an all-time favorite at Editions Mego. The bulk of the album is taken up by the mighty "Do You Me? I Did / Swamp" pieces which were commissioned for a piece of the same name by choreographer Michael Clark. A grey tonal poem of amazing, bleak beauty building up to the ecstatic crescendo of the third movement. Elsewhere, short notes on the possibilities of abstract electronic noise are included in the form of "Here Visit" and "U, Mu, U," which still hold their sense of urgency a quarter of a century after being initially recorded. This is also the first time the complete album is available domestically on CD. Previous CD issues were the This Way To The Shivering Man on Mute (with "U, Mu, U" missing), and the Japan-only 3CD box with This Way, Shivering Man and Insiding previously-released by Alfa Recordings. This 25th anniversary reissue is remastered by Russell Haswell and contains a rework by Dave Coppenhall on Angela Conway's original artwork.

HOLCOMB, ROSCOE: The High Lonesome Sound LP $18.99

"Originally released in 1965, this is Holcomb's first full album for Folkways. The man for whom the term The High Lonesome Sound was coined certainly shows why here. This is Appalachian folk music, both beautiful and harsh, harrowing and tender. Essential recordings from this Kentucky native lovingly reissued in a perfect replica of the original Folkways jacket and including a reproduction of the original information booklet."

GRISTLEISM: Red Soundbox $29.99

Red-colored version. In stock now! Industrial Records Ltd. are pleased to announce the birth of GRISTLEISM, the newest member of the Throbbing Gristle family. Bastard offspring of now-famous ambient loop player the Buddha Machine, GRISTLEISM is part industrial sound machine, part noise instrument. Featuring 13 original and uncompromising loops, GRISTLEISM delivers a mix of signature TG experimental noise, industrial drone, and classic melodies and rhythms. Available in three colors -- black, chrome and red -- the palm-sized unit (size: w67mm x h69mm x d35mm) features a built-in speaker, volume control, pitch-shift control and loop selector switch. Note: GRISTLEISM does not feature an audio output socket or a DC power input socket. GRISTLEISM features more loops and almost twice the frequency range of the Buddha Machine. GRISTLEISM is powered by two AA batteries [not included] and is the world's first and only portable TG aural exciter! GRISTLEISM was born from a collaboration between Industrial Records, Throbbing Gristle and Christiaan Virant (the creator of the original FM3 Buddha Machines) and is packaged in an exquisite "Chinese paper-cut" wrapping, featuring a repeating TG logo pattern, foil embossing and UV ink.

CRUMB, ROBERT: Hot Women CD $16.99

Subtitled: Women Singers From The Torrid Regions Of The World. Originally released in 2003, this is a 2007 pressing. For cartoonist and music-lover Robert Crumb, the best music was created between 1925 and 1935. What he likes so much about songs from this decade is their adherence to a culture of live music, free from any modern commercial forces -- but he also could not do without several gems from the 1940s and 1950s. Crumb now proves his love for this music in a selection of songs from women singers from southern countries all over the world -- Greece, Turkey, Africa, India, Mexico, Italy, Spain, and many more. Women whose passionate voices make you think of torrid desert landscapes or tropical islands. Women singing of pain, of love, of their circumstances and cultures. As an ardent collector of old 78 RPM records, as a virtuoso guitar-, banjo- and ukulele-player, as a co-musician on and publisher of various records and CDs, Robert Crumb is one of the most knowledgeable experts on this musical era that has been largely forgotten. And of course it goes without saying that this CD is most wonderfully designed and illustrated by the famous artist himself.

VA: My Estrogeneration LP $14.99

lady comp on not not fun

VAINIO, MIKA: Vandal EP 12" $14.99

Part of Raster Noton's Unun series, Mika Vainio's Vandal EP shows his preference for working in analog. He develops a dynamic sound that harkens Pan Sonic, working from a rather abstract structure towards arrangements which more and more suit a club setting. Straight beats, noise and the lack of clicks & cuts are the ingredients for his contemporary version of electronic club music. Mika's sound stands for being physical, raw and profound beyond all clichés.

Can: Soon Over Babaluna CD $11.99

VA: Face A Frowning World: An E.C. Ball Memorial Album CD $14.99

"Featuring Jolie Holland, Jon Langford, Michael Hurley, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy and many others. E.C. Ball of Rugby, Virginia, drove a school bus, ran a service station, and, with his wife Orna, made some of the most joyful, eerie, affecting, and enduring traditional country music around. First recorded by John A. Lomax for the Library of Congress in 1937, they sang ballads, comic songs, and mountain gospel music on records and the radio in a style entirely their own. Face A Frowning World is a tribute to the music of E.C. and Orna Ball, and a thirty-year memorial to E.C., who died in 1978. Played in large part by the Health & Happiness Family Gospel Band of Louisville, Kentucky, and many others."

GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR: Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada LP $17.99
2009 repress. Originally released in 1999. "The sonic crests and swells that this nine member band achieves is apt reminder of the physicality godspeed you black emperor! works with. Three guitars, two bassists, two drummers and a string section coordinate together with a nimbleness that defies the expectations you might have of a nine piece band. Add field recordings and you have an unparalleled listening experience."

MINOR THREAT: Minor Threat LP $12.99
Originally released in 1981 as two 7" EPs. New yellow cover reissue, remastered and including an 11x17 insert with photos and lyrics.

FUGAZI: Fugazi LP $12.99
Fugazi's debut 7 song EP, originally released in 1988. Printed inner sleeve with lyrics. "This 12" EP (on black vinyl) was recut from the Silver Sonya masters in 2008 at Chicago Mastering Service."
not sure this item is coming as i was invoiced for something else..........i'll know on wed when the box arrives
.VA: My Estrogeneration LP $14.99
"First ever NNF vinyl compilation (more in the future hopefully?) finds the spotlight landing fairly on the fairer sex, and the glare is glorious. 11 diverse femme musical energies corralled across 12 inches of black vinyl, all exclusive contributions, and the breadth of zones and interzones traversed is a beautiful thing to hear. Carry on my wayward non-sons. LPs in jackets with artwork by Pocahaunted bassist/scholar Diva Dompe, plus a full-color double-sided insert. Edition of 500. This year's Estrogeneration includes: Zola Jesus, Tickley Feather, Pocahaunted (vintage unused track from Gold Miner's Daughters sessions), Inca Ore, Topaz Rags, HNY, Talk Normal, Islaja (featuring Samara Lubelski and Blevin Blectum), L.A. Vampires, U.S. Girls and Valet."

TOPAZ RAGS: Capricorn Born Again LP $14.99
"Grey clouds stay grey. Low light situations birth low-lit moods. It's all bummer clockwork. West Coast lurk-jazz triad Topaz Rags return to vinyl with their debut long player, Capricorn Born Again, an eight-song comedown recorded/mixed from spring-to-fall of '09 via a complex 4-track/boombox assemblage method. Everything creaks and hisses, there's smoke in the air, players at the end of their ropes, lyrics washing over faded raga ballads, slinky electric piano bar depressions, shadow gauze cavern pop. The bell jar is half empty, obviously. Slow dive and sink in. Black vinyl LPs (mastered by Pete Swanson) in jackets designed by Amanda. Edition of 400."

ECHOLOGIST: Snow Blower EP 12" $13.99
Under his Echologist moniker, Brendon Moeller offers up four slabs of massive, dancefloor-oriented techno. The EP kicks off with the unrelenting and funky dub techno workout, "Dirt," its background white noise reverberating and ricocheting, creating an irresistible flow. Next is the sub-aquatic "Giant," with a wall of sound reminiscent of volcanic lava flowing downhill. "Swell" is a nod to Maurizio, but with a shoegazing feel that's as psychedelic as techno gets. "Ritual" is a DJ tool with crisp, oscillating synths.

BENOIT & SERGIO: What I've Lost 12" $14.99
"The second release on thesongsays seems to find what we might call 'romantic techno' in a happier place. Sort of. While Bruno Pronsato's The Make Up The Break Up focused on the darker side of romance, Benoit & Sergio's What I've Lost raises a similar question: can we ever be really satisfied? Benoit & Sergio chose 'Full Grown Man,' as the opener. The bravado of the initial vocals -- 'I Need A Lady To Understand I'm A Full Grown Man' -- references the masculine posturing of, say, Led Zeppelin's 'Whole Lotta Love,' but also calls attention to the vulnerability and neediness of this masculinity. And when we are seduced into drinking a little wine at the track's midpoint, we realize that this seduction is a mere maneuver to avoid a deeper loneliness. If, lyrically, 'Full Grown Man' points to certain emotional complexities, so, too, does the music: somber synth lines overlay short, brassy stabs, as the intricate sequencing shifts its moods like so many teenage boys. Floating atop a bassline befitting Galaxie 500 or Yo La Tengo, 'What I've Lost' is too beautiful and moving to confine within the often all too arid or hyper places of dance music. 'What I've Lost' belongs to the dance floor at the end of the night, to the slow dance, to the one who might one day betray you."

ZELIENOPLE: Give It Up LP+CD $22.99
LP version. Includes a bonus CD featuring a full album's worth of soundtrack material entitled Gone. Chicago-based trio Zelienople present their second album for the Type label. Zelienople have been around for quite a while now, and in that time have become staples in the underground music architecture. Percussionist Mike Weis has appeared on recent recordings with alt-folk legend Scott Tuma, and Weis, Tuma and guitarist/vocalist Matt Christensen form the band Good Stuff House. Despite all this activity, their passion still lies in Zelienople. Multi-instrumentalist Brian Harding completes the trio, which has forged its most essential work to date with Give It Up, a record which succeeds as a perfect summation of their progress. With previous albums, the band have garnered no shortage of comparisons to Talk Talk, Slowdive and Bark Psychosis, and while these comparisons still stand, here Zelienople have pushed the influences into the background to reveal a daring and fresh sound. Poppier than its predecessor His/Hers (TYPE 024CD), Give It Up is a collection of rolling songs, from the Bohren Und Der Club Of Gore-esque opener "Aging" to the doomed Americana of "All I Want Is Calm," and the hazy ambience of "Water Saw." As we pass through the effortless percussive shuffle and dream-like riffing of "I Can Put All My Faith In Her," perhaps the closest the band have ever come to writing a pop song, it's hard not to fall under their spell. It is a record with scope and an enviable restraint, and a record which revels in the band's experience and pedigree. This is an album of crystalline, mysterious beauty; it is something which might take multiple listens to truly uncover, and is infinitely rewarding once you do. Cinematic, but startlingly unpretentious, this is music perfectly primed for the colder seasons. Light a log fire and enjoy.

hi nice people!
here is a handful of new releases for the week - hope you find something interesting and new! come by and say hello and hear sounds to treat your ears.
this show is coming up on firday night in hamtramck - you should go! if you like guitars and drones and fingerpicked wonderfulness, you should go!
Friday, Nov. 20th: Mike Tamburo and Ben Reynolds with Duo Unduo and Nick Schillace solo @ 2739 Edwin
Mike Tamburo first gained notice as a guitarist working in the American Primitive style, with strong influences from Eastern sources. A little over two years ago, he stopped playing guitar and turned his attention to the hammer dulcimer. Mike's playing is more reminiscent of Indian santoor playing than American mountain dulcimer- the santoor being the Indian name for essentially the same instrument. In Mike's hands it becomes a vehicle for extended modal themes that build to cathartic finales. His work is well documented on several recordings and he runs his own label, New American Folk Hero, which just put out his second box-set of material.
Ben Reynolds hails from Glasgow, Scotland and has been enjoying the warm approval of taste-making folksters like Will Oldham and legendary record producer Joe Boyd. American and British influences are both in evidence in his material-  which can take the form of everything from folky solo instrumentals, to rock songs with a full band. Expect more of the former in this set.

Duo Unduo is the joint project between Nick Schillace and Joel Peterson, featuring a small pile of string instruments. It features extended through compositions, folkloric material and other arty things. Nick will also return to solo guitar performance after a shockingly long break (preceded by a shockingly long streak of only solo performance!).

Doors at 8 pm; $5-10 donation. Located at 2739 Edwin, Hamtramck, MI. Please use parking lot behind building first, to ease impact on the neighborhood.
i found this article today and felt it was appropriate to include here. thank you - to all the folks who help out when and where they can.

Lac La Belle cd $9.99
the group with Nick Schillace and Jennie Knaggs and joel peterson
Evocative of bygone eras and hollowed traditions, the music of Lac La Belle fits comfortably next to old timey Americana, but blazes its own trail away from the purist camp.
Formed in 2008 as Jennie and the Sure Shots, the group began as an expansion of the set of country, honky tonk and cowboy tunes that singer Jennie Knaggs had been performing around Detroit. Nick Schillace and Joel Peterson are enthusiasts of the early decades of recorded music who had distinguished themselves in the creative music scene there. They saw the potential for a new group that could absorb and transmute the vocabulary of early Americana. Schillace and Peterson learned Knaggs’ expansive repertoire and then the trio went to work hammering out its own identity. The name change to Lac La Belle signaled the new direction and the group consolidated energy into songwriting and several tours.
“[Lac La Belle]...play old-school swinging Western, country and backwoods Americana. Comprised of three of Detroit's most talented musicians — multi-instrumentalists and music aficionados Joel Peterson and Nick Schillace and the owner of that sweet and plaintive warble, Jennie Knaggs — Lac La Belle play pitch-perfect originals in synch with the old-timey classics that are also included in their repertoire.”
- Megan O’ Neal, Detroit Metro Times

"[Lac La Belle's] old-timey revival music is distinctive in that, rather than providing a contemporary twist on music using throwback instrumentation, the band's sound is straight out of early Americana. Knaggs provides warbling vocals and yodels, and her backing band -- Nick Shillace and Joel Peterson, both well-known musicians in their own right -- holds down a startlingly authentic old-time country sound."
- Andy Mulkerin, Pittsburgh City Paper

VA: The Bombay Connection: Funk From Bollywood Action Thrillers CD $17.99
...1977-1984, Vol. 1. This is the first volume in a planned series of 6 CDs presenting the best, rarest and most exciting songs from the colorful history of Bollywood music, most of which are still gathering dust in Indian vaults and are unknown to the Western public. Bombay Connection Vol. 1: Funk from Bollywood Action Thrillers 1977-1984 showcases the sound of the Indian action film of the late '70s and early '80s. Under the influence of films like Shaft and Dirty Harry, a new kind of Indian action film came into being in 1970s India. To match the loud fights and fast chases, Indian composers developed an exciting brand of Bollywood funk. Wah-wah guitars, congas and funky Moogs were effortlessly blended with tablas, dhols and Indian melody lines. This album compiles 13 of the best, incredibly original Bollywood funk grooves, painting scenes of frantic chases through the back streets of Bombay, sexy seductive dances by female spies and secret plots conceived in subterranean headquarters by fake-moustached villains. The series is compiled by Bollywood connoisseur, researcher and top collector Edo Bouman, who carefully selected the songs, assuring that each of these tracks is an ear-tantalizing gem, compiled into an enjoyable, consistent listening experience. The Bombay Connection series will cover a multitude of exciting genres from the 1950s to the late '80s, including Bollywood horror, hippie psychedelics, spy flick suspense music, and stomping 1980s Indian disco. The 6-panel digipack comes with a colorful 30-page booklet containing well-researched info and a wealth of pictures. For the very first time, extensive research has been done into the history of Bollywood film music: interviews with composers and musicians have been conducted, and Bombay Connection has spared no energy or expense to locate the original stills and posters of the films. This is also the first Bollywood compilation CD to feature the Hindi song lyrics and English translations. Thus the booklet provides a wealth of information and pictures, sketching the original context in which these songs were made and enjoyed.

VA: Africa Boogaloo: The Latinization Of West Africa 2LP $21.99
Gatefold 2LP version. Honest Jon's presents a collection of music from '60s and '70s West Africa that is heavily influenced by Latin sounds from the era, representing a mutual cultural exchange that would have a permanent impact on the evolution of each region's trademark sound. Much of what makes modern Latin music so irresistible came from Africa in the first place. When the first waves of African rhythms, reconstituted in the Caribbean, returned home on radios and records, Africans -- especially in West and Central Africa -- received them with great enthusiasm. Staid dance bands that replicated European music soon began to swing as Caribbean accents settled in their rhythm sections. By the 1950s, Africa had produced its own Calypsonians, and more than one African musician changed his name to give it a Latin flavor. Some even composed songs in Spanish, while others wrote nonsense lyrics that only sounded like the real thing. No band mixed local and Latin styles more successfully than Orchestre Baobab and its leader Balla Sidibe. The mesmerizing "On Verra Ca" finds Baobab leaning in the direction of the stuttering mbalax sound that Youssou N'Dour carried to great popularity. Other Senegalese bands followed the trend, like the Rio Band, Orchestre N'Guewel, and Laba Sosseh from Gambia (like his compatriot Amara Toure) who styled himself as a salsa singer after his hero Johnny Pacheco. From Benin, Gnonnas Pedro sang in every pop style imaginable, but he seems especially at home in an Afro-Cuban embrace, as you will hear on the 1977 recording "Adigbedoto." The closing track also comes from Benin, a 1976 recording by the celebrated Orchestre Poly Rythmo -- though the singer, Pierre Tchana, hails from Cameroun. "Quiero Wapacha" features another Camerounian singer, Charles Lembe, and also from Cameroun is legendary African Jazz saxophonist, Manu Dibango, who is featured here alongside Le Grand Calle and Cuban flutist Don Gonzalo. Orchestre OK Jazz recorded any number of Afro-Cuban inspired sides: "Micorrason" is one of the band's earliest songs, recorded soon after their formation in 1956. There is no better evidence of the push-me-pull-you, back-and-forthing between two cultures than the Afro-Latin compilation we have here. All the flow from an unparalleled period of exuberance and creativity after World War II had ended and before homegrown tyranny had yet to descend on the land. It was Africa's moment, optimistic and free. You can hear it in the music. --Adapted from text by Gary Stewart, author of Rumba On The River: A History of the Popular Music of the Two Congos.

KUTI, FELA: Beasts Of No Nation/Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am 12" $14.99
"Fela Anikulapo (Ransome) Kuti's life and career were more than anything an attempt to fuse the worlds of music and politics irrevocably. Kuti spearheaded the new fusion of West African originated 'Afrobeat'---a genre of which he was and is the indisputable leader---with a determined militancy inspired by pan African radicalism and to a lesser extent U.S. black nationalism, and, in the process, made him as many enemies as followers; but always carried by the unfettered musical intuitiveness & improvisation that lent his politically abrasive forthrightness an undeniable mass appeal, transcending well beyond his own specific conditions and appealing on a universal musical scale really unmatched by many musical moguls...a true 'empire' that has transcended Kuti's own death and lives on (perhaps unfortunately) in the form of his kin & idolizers alike. His music, that joyous instrument of social change, was his catalyst & albeit integral vessel for radical agitation. It's not that the countless albums stand on their musical merit alone, the truly free method to the relentless and melodically entrancing reiteration of his own Afrobeat---a music that in itself needs no heady articulation to be enjoyed, and it's basically universal popularity testifies to this. But the very volatility of his music at once elevates the songs into something more than relegated culture. On the contrary, you can still sense the urgency in these records, essential battle tools against colonialism and political apathy, igniters of the great fire of agitation while remaining essential and undeniable landmarks of exceptional musical invention. This exclusive 12" pressing of some of Fela's finest work, the undeniably masterful 'Beasts of No Nation' and 'Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am,' presents a formidable example of Fela's finest work, the best possible examples of his own personal unity of theory & practice that has created over 30 full-length albums & an unshakable legacy that lives on with justifiable necessity."
VA: Warp20 (Unheard) CD $17.99
"Warp20 (Unheard) is an eleven-track collection of secret treasures rediscovered from the Warp vaults, stretching across the entire 20 year span of the label's history. The unheard and rare pieces include Boards of Canada's near-mythical 'Seven Forty Seven' (the first music Mike and Marcus have let out since Trans Canada Highway), pre-Incunabula era Autechre, Broadcast (a Nico cover, 'Sixty Forty' performed for a John Peel session) and *Nightmares on Wax* (DJ E.A.S.E. and Boy Wonder productions from the time of Dextrous) to name just a few." Also includes tracks by Plaid, Elektroids, Clark, Flying Lotus and Seefeel.

Introducing Ryan Trevor is the third release in the GZoaola cDtiics kZoo Disk series. Incredibly rare &
homespun pop LP from minor LA songwriter Ryan Trevor. A near-exact repro of an insanely catchy song cycle of Macca-melodies, subverted by copious amounts of phase, fuzz & a bedroom production ambience that would certainly make Bob Pollard, Ariel Pink or The Godz jealous. Furthermore, GZD honcho Plastic Crimewave estimates this music (circa 1977) to be "somewhere between Emitt Rhodes and R. Stevie Moore." Vinyl only!

Sun Ra: I Am Strange 7" $5.99
Previously unissued early recordings. "Sixties spoken word mysticism from Saturn, with otherworldly instrumentation! Absolutely brain bending and everso essential!"
Fuckpony: Let The Love CD $15.99
Let The Love Flow is a self-contained album with powerful, melodic arches and a great, dramatic understatement of house for ravers in love and for raved-out lovers who are still going, long after peak-time.
Foster, R: Two Headed LP $13.99
Exact repro reissue, originally released in 1972. "Ronnie Foster's debut album Two Headed Freap is a set of contemporary funky soul-jazz from the early '70s, which means it sounds closer to the soundtrack of a lost blaxploitation flick than Back at the Chicken Shack, Pt. 2. Foster certainly does display a debt to Jimmy Smith, but his playing is busier than Smith's and a bit wilder. Ironic, then, that his playing is in service to the groove and blends into the mix of wah-wah guitars, funk rhythms, electric bass, harps, and percolating percussion. Everything on Two Headed Freap is about glitzy groove -- it sounds cinematic, colorful, and funky." -- All Music

Ambarchi/Fennesz/: Tea CD $16.99
It's the people involved in Afternoon Tea -- originally released in 2000 on German label Ritornell and now reissued on Black Truffle with a new master, bonus tracks and newly discovered live recordings after years of being out of print -- that ensured it was more than a happy accident. The twin guitar presence of AMM's Keith Rowe and Oren Ambarchi and kindred spirits of the laptop -- Sydney's Pimmon, Vienna's Christian Fennesz and Peter Rehberg -- made it a momentous day. With all the players coming together during the 2000 What Is Music? Festival (co-curated by Ambarchi), Afternoon Tea stands as a highpoint of the then-emerging intersection between Powerbook performance and guitar improvisation. All subtlety, nuance and detail, it is a revelation of restraint. Built on a steadying flow of burbling rhythm, the quintet slowly weave around each others' sonics in layers, creating a tonal palette immersive in its atmosphere and magnetic in its compulsion.

LILES, ANDREW: Ouarda (The Subtle Art Of Phyllorhodomancy) CD/DVD DUALDISC $19.99
Previously released in a limited edition 2LP version, now available for the first time on a digital format -- the DualDisc expanded edition of the critically-acclaimed Ouarda (The Subtle Art Of Phyllorhodomancy) by Andrew Liles (Current 93, Nurse With Wound). Ouarda features contributions from, amongst others, Danielle Dax, Rose McDowall and Edward Ka-Spel. Side one of this disc is an audio CD including an extra track and a slightly remixed version of the LP. Side two of the disc is a DVD which includes a film by Michael Tang with musical adaptations by Colin Potter; Old Tom's Marrow, a film by Andrew Liles and 3 amazing 5.1 mixes by Freida Abtan. Packaged in a beautiful super jewel-box with a full-color 8-page booklet with stunning Liles artwork. DVD is NTSC all-region

Kirby, L: Memories Live Longer Than Dreams lp  $26.99
Layered drones and distorted crescendos somehow sound like Yellow Swans and Vangelis battling it out for supremacy over 13 minutes of immense, visceral music. "Don't Sleep I'm Not What I Seem, I'm A Very Quiet Storm" is a 14-minute piano treatment that's at once deeply beautiful and somehow strangely disturbing -- evoking long-submerged memories. A fitting end to this substantial, important body of work

FROST, BEN: By The Throat CD $16.99
This is Reykjavik-based composer/producer Ben Frost's second release for the Icelandic Bedroom Community label. Frost first took the spotlight and smashed it to pieces in 2007 with his breathtaking and critically acclaimed release Theory of Machines, which Boomkat called "the future of electronic music" and The Wire called "simply awesome -- Arvo Pärt as arranged by Trent Reznor." It's impossible to truly classify where he is coming from musically, but it would be safe to say his fans would also have records from Neurosis, Tim Hecker, Sunn O))) and Fennesz in their collection. To simply call him an experimental electronic musician, however, does him no justice whatsoever. Where Theory of Machines came sterilized in fluorescent light, By The Throat is blood red and cloaked in shadow.

WILLIAMS, EDWARD: Life On Earth: Music From The 1979 BBC TV Series CD $17.99
The groundbreaking natural history program Life On Earth hit UK TV screens 30 years ago, in 1979, and this is the first time the beautiful music composed for the series by Edward Williams has been commercially issued. It's quite extraordinary that something so utterly beautiful has remained unissued until now.
The music itself is hard to categorize -- of course it's soundtrack music, but it hints at classical, at library music, touches on the avant-garde, and has a strong ambient feel and an unusual timeless quality. It involves over 70 musicians, with the composer placing much of the played music through his vintage 1973 VCS 3 synthesizer.

SIGUR ROS: Gobbledigook 12" $13.99
"Gobbledigook" is the spectacular opener on Sigur Rós' album Með Suð Í Eyrum Við Spilum Endalaust -- and is one of the most hymn-like songs they've written thus far. Fellow Icelanders Stephen Stephenson aka President Bongo (Gus Gus) and Jack Schidt transform the complex, polyrhythmic original into an exceptionally ethereal club track. The percussive groove takes over the tribalistic atmosphere of the original, catapulting it into the future. Thomas Fehlmann's remix is sensational, and somehow turns this song into a schaffel.
OS MUTANTES: Os Mutantes LP $16.99
180 gram exact repro reissue, officially licensed from Universal. "Absolutely brilliant debut from 1968 with a wild & crazy mixture of psychedelia & Brazilian music, with killer fuzz guitars, effects, Beatles influences. An incredible set of great songs that sound today even more fresh and modern than in 1968!!! Includes an astounding fuzzed-out cover of Jorge Ben's 'A Minha Menina.'"

OS MUTANTES: Jardim Elétrico LP $16.99
180 gram exact repro reissue, licensed from Universal. Originally released in 1971. "One of the absolute highlights of the album is the humorous 'El Justiciero,' which features Spanish lyrics and also some Spanish-style guitar play. Other great songs are 'Tecnicolor,' which has lyrics in English, the melodious and slightly Beatlesque 'Virgínia,' and 'Tudo, Tudo, Tudo,' a song that features a bluesy mouth harmonica. On these and other tracks on the album, the music of Os Mutantes is just as playful and creative as ever." -- All Music Guide

VA: Singapore A-Go-Go CD $16.99
Sublime Frequencies works its way down to the tip of the Malaysian peninsula with this superb collection of Singaporean '60s beat, pop and "off-beat cha-cha" classics compiled from original vinyl 45s. These 22 supercharged beat-a-go-go tracks defy a common held belief that the Chinese couldn't rock, groove or swing back in the 1960s. The vocals are sung in the dialects of Mandarin and Hokkien and they soar, with catchy hooks atop groovy, clever beats. There's plenty of electric guitar, organ and crazy percussion rocking and twisting behind it all, at times reaching quite a mad and freaky state of affairs. The record's finale, "Happy Lunar New Year," sung by Linda Yong, may be the weirdest New Year's greeting ever recorded. Every single cut is a winner and it never lets up, from start to finish.

BIBIO: The Apple And The Tooth CD $13.99
"Hot on the heels of his highest selling, critically-acclaimed album Ambivalence Avenue (Best New Music on Pitchfork), Bibio has assembled a companion album comprised of 4 all-new tracks and 8 remixes from luminaries such as Warp's own Clark, Friendly Fires' visual collaborator Rob Lee, as well as Bibio himself. From the clattering, beat-forward re-imagining of 'Dwrcan' by San Francisco's Eskmo to the babymaking, lush downtempo snap of Leatherette's 'Lover's Carvings' remix, to Bibio's own Parisienne carnival re-contextualization of 'Palm of Your Wave', The Apple And The Tooth illuminates the dramatic range of sounds and influences Ambivalence Avenue employs and portrays."

KIRBY, LEYLAND: Sadly, The Future Is No Longer What It Was 3CD $25.99

These pieces are the first released by The Caretaker's James Kirby under his own name and are the result of an intense period of production aimed at encapsulating a deep feeling of loss and alienation. What started as a concept for a simple single album soon turned into a double-album, then into a double double-album before finally ending up as a triple-double- vinyl album and triple CD soundtrack. As James Leyland Kirby himself describes it: "Here we stand, 20 years on from the first CD, and our optimism has gradually been eroded away collectively. "Tomorrow's World" never came. We are lost and isolated, many of us living our lives through social networks as we try to make sense of it all, becoming voyeurs, not active participants. Documenting everything. No mystery. Everything laid bare for all to see." Sadly, The Future Is No Longer What It Was is the soundtrack to a world in decline, the heroism of modern life, a document of loss, an essay in gloom, delivered with a brutally honest appreciation of the pitiful truth. Time-worn, ambient drone-hauntology.

COBRA KILLER: Uppers And Downers CD $15.99

This is Cobra Killer's fifth full-length studio album. Cobra Killer are Gina V. D'Orio and Annika Line Trost. Both have played in bands in the former West Berlin since the age of 12/13. They formed Cobra Killer in January of 1998, touring through Europe and revolutionizing the then-boring electronic music scene with their raucous show. In 2002, they took Australia and New Zealand by storm, supporting Peaches on various shows, including the Big Day Out Festival. Shortly afterwards, they were also a support act for Sonic Youth, who were very impressed by the Cobra movement. Recently, they have wowed capacity crowds supporting big names such as Marilyn Manson and Jon Spencer, who also guests on two tracks on this album. Uppers And Downers sees Cobra Killer sounding as defiant and as unpredictable as ever. Recorded in part at Einstürzende Neubauten's andereBaustelle studio in Berlin, and featuring appearances by other such special guests such as J. Mascis and Thurston Moore, the record is a roller-coaster ride that sees the band pushing the limits and again going way beyond expectations to deliver an album that's sure to please their many fans. Chock-full of totally pounding, crazed electro-punk/new-wave mishmash, and some less likely surprises.

SHINDIG: Shindig! presents Psychotic Reaction MAG $10.99

"Sonics, Bay Area Garage, Count V, Flintstones, Gonn, Texas Garage, Garage in the Movies, Blues Magoos, Pleasure Seekers, Elastik Band, Standells, Rationals, Tampa Bay Garage, Davie Allan, We The People. These in-depth and exclusive features -- from the pens of top pop writers, archivists and historians -- cover a broad spectrum of North American bands who have come to define the term 'garage.' Loooooong hair, Vox guitars, Farfisa organs, Beatle boots, tight Levis and a ton of snot and attitude -- these bands invented the punk ethic 10 years before the word 'punk' was even being used. From New York (The Blues Magoos) down to Florida (We The People); from Texas (Zakary Thaks) up to the North West (The Sonics, The Wailers); this is the first US garage reader to hit the shelves to date. Nobody has covered the U.S. '60s garage band explosion with such dedication and know-how before. This Shindig! special will be produced as a premium price. 116 pages.

Heron - Recently reborn pastoral '70s folk heroes whose influence just gets bigger and bigger. British Exploitation Films - A second helping of vintage sleaze, horror and weirdness and the wild sounds that soundtracked it. The Litter - From 'Action Woman' to Emerge -- the Minneapolis noiseniks exposed at last. Nik Turner - Twenty questions for Hawkwind founder, still standing after 40 years in deep space. Pete Atkin - Following the reissue of his '70s solo albums, one of our most talented and unsung singer/songwriter/raconteurs pops in for a chat." 92 full color pages.

ELEH/NANA APRIL JUN: Observations & Momentum LP $18.99

The Touch label presents the Observations & Momentum split LP as a great opportunity to hear noise minimalist Eleh and Swedish visual/sound artist Christofer Lämgren aka Nana April Jun at their finest. Nana April Jun's track "Sun Wind Darkness Eye" is taken from the album The Ontology Of Noise (TONE 037CD), particularly because it stands out as being perfect for a vinyl edition. In the same time-frame, the series of releases by Eleh on Important Records attracted the Touch label's attention. These homages to La Monte Young, Pauline Oliveros and Charlemagne Palestine, as vinyl-only limited editions, stunned with their acuity and passion for detail. There was something acutely other in their sound. Eleh, also, is an artist who prefers the work to speak for itself, and has other provocative ideas about noise. The digital is questioned by a commitment to a working practice based around analog tone-generators and letter-press printed covers. The Important Records/Taiga releases are now sought-after with a passion by anyone who recognizes something truly special occurring. On this recording, Eleh develops the waveforms that the Important Records series started. The split vinyl format is a great meeting point for this idea of digital persona and analog privacy. The effect, it is hoped, is for the vinyl to represent a digital question: that this LP summons up a universal sound and an intimate sphere of operations, which is, of course, a continuing dilemma. Limited edition of 1,000 copies. Art & photography by Jon Wozencroft.

VA: Fire In My Bones 3CD $29.99

Subtitled: Raw + Rare + Other-Worldly African-American Gospel [1944-2007]. "Almost 4 hours of music on 3 discs -- super-compelling, undiluted, stripped-down gospel! The majority of this music has never been reissued on CD, or in any other form (most tracks were originally released on regional independent labels). Most post-WWII compilations of African-American gospel music naturally concentrate on the astounding quartet and solo vocalist sounds made during the music's Golden Age. Fire In My Bones attempts to address and collect more neglected sounds from that era (and on to the present day). Dozens of traditions are represented. Some go back hundreds of years while others seem to have been arrived at as soon as the tape began to roll. Field recordings and studio tracks are all mashed together, with solo performances next to congregational recordings, hellfire sermons next to afterlife laments. Leon Pinson, Elder & Sister Brinson & the Brinson Brothers, Grant & Ella, Straight Street Holiness Group, Theotis Taylor, Brother & Sister W B Grate -- these artists will now be just a little less obscure. Fire In My Bones provides a small peek at the incredible diversity and power of post-war black gospel. Much of this music is raw, distorted and might sound a bit strange. But it is not presented as a novelty freak show or as 'outsider music.' This is gospel -- which we must always remember translates as 'the good news' -- as it has been sung and performed in tiny churches and large programs, from rural Georgia to urban Los Angeles. It is clearly among the most vibrant, playful, beautiful and emotionally charged music in the world."

FAUST: Faust IV LP $23.99

Exact replica, officially reissued by EMI. 180 gram audiophile pressing with printed inner sleeve; digitally remastered from original tapes. This reissue was "researched, spearheaded and co-ordinated" by Tom Recchion who has supplied rare artwork for the inner sleeve -- and, in general, this is a state-of-the-art edition. The fourth and final album to be released during Faust's original lifespan, originally released by Virgin Records in 1973. "As an album, IV matches the band's trajectory: Jumbled, fragmented, with random data integrity issues, but seeming more the brainchild of inspired pop anarchists than calculating avant-gardists. Yes, the record sounds more 'professional' than any of their others, but somehow that doesn't actually equate to slick sounds: Opener 'Krautrock' (which Irmler says was inspired by the band's perception of the British still fearing the 'krauts') is on the noisiest end of Faust's spectrum, using distortion and feedback as springboards for tripping into galactic clouds. For better than seven minutes, minute gradients of angelic, overdriven major-chord-sheets are exploited by who knows what devices before the drums come in and the track moves from milky, third-ear noise into MINDFUCKING KRAUTROCK. And before you can explode from the sonic congestion, 'The Sad Skinhead' starts, replete with ridiculous 60s go-go beat and skank guitar. They sing, 'Apart from all the bad times you gave me, I always felt good with you,' 'Going places, smashing faces-- what else could have happened to us?' I say needlessly: it's a jam. And then they keep going." -- Pitchfork (9.4 rating

SCOTT, SIMON: Navigare CD $16.99

This is the debut full-length release by the UK's Simon Scott. Scott has had a notable musical past: in the early '90s he was the drummer for the renowned shoegaze band Slowdive. Upon leaving Slowdive, he formed the more electronic-based group Televise. He also set up his own label, Kesh Recordings, and has so far released titles by the likes of Hannu, Sebastian Roux, Aus and Mark Templeton. More recently, Scott has been involved in several diverse projects, including his work as a member of Seavault (with Antony Ryan from Isan), and collaborations with Machinefabriek, Jasper TX and Emmanuele Errante. With Navigare, there are shades of Scott's previous output and musical interests, but as a whole, the album marks a bold new direction. Navigare opens with "Introduction Of Cambridge," a shimmering wall of sound, its ethereal tones and slow-burning drones gradually drawing closer and closer, creating gorgeous uplifting melodies and textures. The processed guitar combined with gentle swathes of interference and underlying rhythms echoes the processes of Chain Reaction's productions as much as it does the screeching, arcing feedback lines of Kevin Shield's guitar work. Navigare shares an affinity with the melodic content of Fennesz's work, the dark beauty of Tim Hecker's sound, and houses elements of the restraint found in Andrew Chalk's drone compositions. What really devastates here is Scott's ability to merge ambient passages with such memorable melodic cycles, taking the simplest of ideas and building on them, generating murky hooks and submerged "riffs." Scott explores textures using a variety of instruments including sitar, violin, cello, and flute, merging them with excerpts from field recordings; it all sounds so effortless. The looping rhythms and slow guitars rise and grow, at times approaching something oppressive; select pieces such as "Flood Inn" house an underlying weight, comparable to Justin K. Broderick's Jesu and Final projects. Perhaps the hazy drums, bass and guitar drift of "The ACC" presents the most recognizable of stylistic qualities from Scott's back catalog; a groove that recalls the Souvlaki-era sound in all its glory, re-imagined in a new, darker and more expansive form. Additionally, a guest appearance from label mate Jasper TX, a vocal contribution from Moskitoo, and a track co-written with Rafael Anton Irisarri, adds even more depth to Scott's already ambitious vision.

3 SHADES: Thank God For Beatniks LP $17.99

Gatefold LP version. This is the debut full-length release by 3 Shades -- a collective of musicians (and guests) that one could call a "supergroup." Based in and around Munich, Germany, members include Ivica Vucelic (Dis*ka, Die Regierung, Lightnin' Ivi) on guitar, pedals and vocals; Carl Oesterheld (Carlo Fashion, F.S.K., Ms. John Soda, Tied & Tickled Trio) on organ, harmonium, glockenspiel, and metallophone; Markus Acher (The Notwist, Tied & Tickled Trio, Village Of Savoonga, Lali Puna, 13 & God) on drums, organ, percussion and vocals; and Micha Acher (The Notwist, Tied & Tickled Trio, Ms. John Soda) on bass, organ, trombone and trumpet. On Thank God For Beatniks the band explores soundscapes, rhythm-patterns and moods in multi-colored shades

NOTWIST, THE: Sturm LP+CD $24.99

Germany's The Notwist compose the soundtrack to Sturm (2009), the motion-picture by Hans-Christian Schmid. The plot: Hannah Maynard, a prosecutor at the Tribunal in The Hague, manages to convince a young Bosnian woman to testify against an alleged war criminal. Amidst the inconsistency of political interests and threats coming from Bosnian Serb nationalists, she realizes that her opponents not only sit on the dock across from her, but are also found in her own ranks. For Sturm, The Notwist composed a soundtrack that creates a hypnotic, unreal ambiance with bowed xylophone, alienated glockenspiel, orchestra accordion and minimal electronics. All music composed and played by The Notwist, except "Vilina Kosa Version," composed by Daniel Glatzel and The Notwist, played by Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra and The Notwist. Silkscreen print cover, with a 24-page 21x21 cm photo booklet.

 Souleyman: Highway Hassake CD $16.99

2009 repress. Omar Souleyman is a Syrian musical legend. Since 1994, he and his musicians have emerged as a staple of folk-pop throughout Syria, but until now they have remained little known outside of the country. To date, they have issued more than five-hundred studio and live-recorded cassette albums which are easily spotted in the shops of any Syrian city. Born in rural northeastern Syria, he began his musical career in 1994 with a small group of local collaborators that remain with him today. The myriad musical traditions of the region are evident in their music. Here, classical Arabic mawal-style vocalization gives way to high-octane Syrian dabke (the regional folkloric dance and party music), Iraqi choubi and a host of Arabic, Kurdish and Turkish styles, among others. This amalgamation is truly the sound of Syria. The music often has an overdriven sound consisting of phase-shifted Arabic keyboard solos and frantic rhythms. At breakneck speeds, these shrill Syrian electronics play out like forbidden Morse-code, but the moods swing from coarse and urgent to dirgy and contemplative in the rugged anthems that comprise Souleyman's repertoire. Oud, reeds, baglama saz, accompanying vocals and percussion fill out the sound from track to track. Mahmoud Harbi is a long-time collaborator and the man responsible for much of the poetry sung by Souleyman. Together, they commonly perform the "Ataba," a traditional form of folk poetry used in Dabke. On stage, Harbi chain smokes cigarettes while standing shoulder to shoulder with Souleyman, periodically leaning over to whisper the material into his ear. Acting as a conduit, Souleyman struts into the audience with urgency, vocalizing the prose in song before returning for the next verse. Souleyman's first hit in Syria was Jani (1996) which gained cassette-kiosk infamy and brought him recognition throughout the country. Sublime Frequencies is honored to present the Western debut of Omar Souleyman with this retrospective disc of studio and live recordings spanning 12 years of his career, culled from cassettes recorded between 1994 and 2006. This collection offers a rare glimpse into Syrian street-level folk-pop and Dabke -- a phenomena seldom heard in the West, not previously deemed serious enough for export by the Syrians and rarely, if ever, included on the import agenda of worldwide academic musical committees

GROUP DOUEH: Treeg Salaam CD $16.99

Group Doueh's follow-up to their now-legendary debut LP is here. While most would think it damn near impossible to top the former release, in terms of sheer "shock and awe," Treeg Salaam (trans. "Streets Of Peace"), blows hot and dusty from the infernal sand-swept dunes of the Western Sahara. Compiled from Group Doueh's personal archives, these five tracks are as brain-shifting in their ecstatic brilliance as any music ever heard. From the wah-stroked lead-off track to the blazing dexterity of "Ragsa Jaguar," the whole of the first side is an entrance to the lip-puckering tea den of Saharan trance heaven. Salmou Baamar's (Doueh) guitar/tinidit runs explode in cosmic shrapnel, raining down on the temporal nodes of the listener's brain. On "Tazit Kalifa," we have a 20-minute, smoky, slow-burning, psychedelic excursion into the great unknown. A meditation on the arid and inhospitable landscape that inspires this music and its people. Compiled by Hisham Mayet, this is a CD reissue of the limited LP pressing which sold out almost immediately upon release.7

VA: Siamese Soul CD vol 2 $16.99

This second volume in the Thai Pop Spectacular series brings together regional artists from across Thailand. Some were modest pop players of their time, while others were major stars. Siamese Soul features 1970s hard-grooved roots funk, hypnotic Luk Thung tracks from the Northeastern Thai countryside, 1960s rock & roll and 1980s groove anomalies. All cuts come heavily laced with electric organs and guitar, thick horn sections, the traditional khaen, driving bass and stunning vocal performances with a richness that can easily be called Thai soul music of the highest order. These creative sounds formed by hybrids with Western instrumentation and genres, result in an incredibly dynamic music that is distinctively Thai. Selected from cassette tapes and vinyl found buried on bottom shelves in rural locales, these tracks serve as further evidence of a vital Thai pop scene that's been kept from Western ears for far too long. This CD comes with a 16-page booklet of amazing exclusive photos documenting the era with translated song titles and liner notes by Mark Gergis and Alan Bishop.

BAUHAUS: Bela Lugosi's Dead (Slow To Speak RMX) 12" $14.99

"A perfect heralding of the special morbidity that is Halloween, 'Bela Lugosi's Dead'---the obscure 12"-only masterpiece from indisputable goth/rock kings Bauhaus -- finds itself under the scruple of the scalpel wielded with curious biological fascination of self-endowed surgeons Slow To Speak. While his body remains mostly intact, a few 'arrangements' have been made to Mr. 'Lugosi's' corpse: the pettiness of a few vocal mishaps are swept away and the entire bone structure extended to uncanny length to produce a concentrated specimen of dark, funky percussive rock mastery. Not shying away from the allegedly childish implications of this special time, Slow To Speak embrace them ten-fold, blowing into their trumpets of dark calling the clear echo of gruesome display and musical fascination of aural celebration, the edit's stripped down, haunted wailings a cursed display of grotesque celebration that beckons forth the children of the night to put down their keyboards, espresso-machines and whatever other modern tools of wage-labor to march in unison to the dark calling of the equinox. Obviously this mutated savagery has made 'Lugosi's' corpse primed and ready for the party or individual autopsy, and for this purpose his remains should be exploited to the maximum effect. We can only hope that his spirit lives on through this especially limited, hand-silk-screened-sleeve release to haunt future generations unprepared for the fury of Bauhaus' exceptionally noteworthy work." One-sided release, with Sicksheep (Kenny B. Harris) etching on the B-side.

ZORN, JOHN: Femina CD $18.99

"Structured as a colorful tribute to women in the arts, Femina is a triumphant return to the file card technique that has produced some of Zorn's most shockingly original compositions. Much like an aural film, the music jumps from scene to scene with breathtaking precision, following its own peculiar logic. Hildegard von Bingen, Meredith Monk, Simone de Beauvoir, Frida Kahlo, Madame Blavatsky, Isadora Duncan, Hélène Cixous, Gertrude Stein, Abe Sada, Sylvia Plath, Louise Bourgeois, Margaret Mead, Loie Fuller, Dorothy Parker, Yoko Ono and the moon goddess En Hedu'Anna are just a few of the figures who are referenced, reflected and summoned in this soulful and exhilarating tribute to some of the greatest hearts and minds that ever lived. Featuring an all-woman band of some of the downtown scene's most creative and talented musicians, Femina is one of Zorn's deepest and most profoundly beautiful creations. Unique packaging contains artwork and a 52-page booklet of images by Kiki Smith, one of the world's greatest and most important art visionaries."

MOHAWKE, HUDSON: Butter CD  $17.99

"Megawatt R'n'B stars won't be the only ones to take note of Butter, as the ever-growing global network of bass-craving music fans have been clamoring for new material since Hudson Mohwake's lauded Polyfolk Dance EP earlier this year. On that record, HudMo's hyper melodic drum-and-synth sidewinders only hinted at the panoramic pop magic that was to come and with it he found himself name checked by the likes of Rihanna, Goldie, Sa Ra, Busy P, Flying Lotus, Mars Volta & Crookers.

BROADCAST & THE FOCUS GROUP -             Investigate Witch Cults Of The Radio Age

Cd or 12” each $14.99

"Blasts of distorted guitar, off-tuned analog keyboards and barreling drums mixed with psychedelic soundscapes and occasional disorientation are hallmarks of the Birmingham, England-based group's sound. As the New York Times put it, 'Broadcast's songs are full of creaks, rumbles, saw-toothed distortion and untamed feedback. Each intrusion (is) plotted, and they let the disruption build and sometimes take over a song in a billowing crescendo. Within the tick-tock riffs and pop melodies, the noise seems to break out like steam through volcanic fissures.' In anticipation of their 2010 full length, this EP is a collaboration between Trish Keenan (vocals), James Cargill (Bass, Keyboards, Atmospherics and Production) and long time friend of the band - Julian House, co-founder of the enigmatic UK indie label Ghost Box Music. House, a visual artist as well as musician and producer created Ghost Box Music and his band The Focus Group in order to release the records and create album art he and his friends love - and as he says, 'the purpose of (Ghost Box Music and The Focus Group) was to create not just a record label, but an imaginary world.'"

GIL, GILBERTO: Gilberto Gil CD $15.99

2009 repress. First ever U.S. reissue of this album, with new liner notes by Peter Margasak. "Released in 1971 while Gil was living in London, this is the third self-titled release from the bossa nova and tropicalia legend. Gil recorded this album while in political exile from his native Brazil and its somber, straightforward tone is a welcome change from the experimental, psychedelic assault of his 1969 long player. Featuring 8 originals and a brilliant cover Steve Winwood's 'Can't Find My Way Home,' this Water release also contains 3 bonus tracks including covers of Jimi Hendrix and The Beatles. A tropicalia classic."
