Let's hear it across the world for a man of courage and conviction. A man humble enough to re-appraise and reconsider the very foundations of his life, and to write openly, honestly and publicly about his change of heart. I recommend any of his very personal recent writings both online and in our national newspapers, and also his article in the New Statesman. If only we were fortunate enough to have a set of politicians (with influence) in our government who were posessed of the same passion, belief and conviction. I wonder what we might accomplish throughout our society if our House of Commons, House of Lords, and members of all our local and regional councils were entirely peopled with men and women of similar character, who were prepared to embrace such changes of heart and approach their calling with renewed purpose.

I've been thinking about the whole subject of marriage tonight. A good friend going through a tough time has sparked it off. I have decided it is three things.... a gift.... a calling..... and a decision. A decision to love, whatever the cost. Self sacrifice. Sacrifice for the benefit and blessing of another, and also for the benefit and nurturing of children, too. When you commit to one person for life, you discover total freedom. Freedom to grow, and help your partner to grow. And there should be no back door left open for a quick exit.

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
The best and most sun-kissed fruit grows out on the ends of the branches, away from the safety of the trunk and foliage.
The fruit will only ever be as good as the root.
Just checking out where I've planted myself.

I am wondering why so many people accept that clothes, houses, cars, cathedrals, computers, aeroplanes, trains, art, music and most things with which we surround and comfort ourselves in this crazy 21st century world, have designers or architects, yet consider that birds, trees, fish, mammals, humans, brains, plants, fruit and planets don't.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

Maybe I think too much.......
In the same way that there are physical laws which govern our universe in this dimension, there are Spiritual laws. Unseen eternal divine truths. In fact everything that the human race has introduced to this little corner of the universe which we call earth began life in the unseen realms.
Every thought, desire, inspiration and action begins life as an intangible spirit of an idea. A seed which grows in the mind, and which is drawn down from the spiritual to the physical; a concrete action; the desire for a relationship; a design for a building; a car; an aircraft; an abstract piece of sculpture; a painting; a poem; a beautiful melody; intangible to tangible. Creative freedom. Limitless choice. The unseen becomes the seen. Obvious really. Except that this process brings with it great responsibility.
Every decision to create has a consequence, and every action generates a corresponding circumstance and reaction. An influence on the lives of others. On our environment. On the future.
I often wonder from which place of inspiration some people's intangible desires originate. Because when they become a creation, an action (or perhaps a reaction) I am sometimes left feeling worse than before I witnessed the result of their work. The way we treat each other; the art I observe; the music I hear; the designs I see. I want to be inspired to greater things. I don't want to be presented with another version of the ugliness that I often see around me. I want to be inspired.
Pablo Picasso said "Art is a lie that tells the truth". And I want real truth. Inspiration. To rise above the ordinary. To be inspired to greater things.
I suspect that we are swallowing lies and mistaking them for truths. So I am searching daily for the Way, the Truth and the Life. And I like to think that we all, artists and artisans alike, don't take ourselves to seriously. One creative person inspiring another to higher things, and perhaps encouraging someone to step out and try something artistic. To fulfill a dream, and thought, an idea. One beggar showing another beggar where the food is.

This world is a beautiful miracle. I have just been sitting outside in the morning sun watching the bees laboriously collecting nectar from the lavender bush, and pondering the complex eco-system and the creative wonder that is our natural world. Or what's left of it. A world that we have, as a race systematically abused, exploited and (in some countries) virtually destroyed, so that the delicate natural habitat of many of the innocent creatures with whom we share this verdant globe, has all but disappeared. It is such a heartbreaking shame. Yet I am hopeful that there is still time to reverse this tragic situation before it really is too late. Now that would be a beautiful miracle.

Hi there, and thanks for logging onto the blogging. It is strange to think that I have no idea who is reading the words which I am now typing, and that you might be living thousands of miles away across the other side of the world; or perhaps just around the corner. The unusual closeness that is the internet. It amazes me that people write the most personal things and post them into hyperspace for the world to share, yet have trouble talking to their next door neighbour. So anyway, I hope all is going well with you, wherever you are, and that you are enjoying the day. I suppose I should offer you an inspiring thought for your day as well, but I can't think of anything very original just now. So my little contribution is this: Winston Churchill once said 'We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give'. Now there is something to put a spring in your step. Have fun.

The Liverpool poet Brian Patten has written this line in one of his poems, and I can't stop thinking about it. Nothing is ever as perfect as you want it to be. Not this side of heaven, anyway. But sometimes I wish it was. Sometimes I wish I could fix things, so that dreams came true, and so that all those disappointments I often see in the faces of those I meet, and that I witness in my own and other peoples lives, were little celebrations of joy instead of sorrow. That on this earth good can triumph over evil. (I'm told it does eventually, but sometimes it's hard to see it and believe it.) That the good guy really can win in the end. That the girl gets the guy of her dreams; that he will love her, take care of her and their children, and won't walk out on her. That the sick child might live. (I will one day blog my Uganda trips). But there again, I like films with happy endings, and I want everyone's story to have a happy ending, even those that don't care, or even realise that this is what they want. Because in the big eternal picture, this is what we all really need. So I wish I could fix that thing inside me which is not perfect, and which has a tendency to trip me up, and make me less than the best I can be. I see it in everyone; hiding and waiting round the corner to jump out and derail us all when we least expect it. Breaking up the happy picture. The happy friendships. The happy family. The happy nation. Our happy world. So I accept it, and I trust that with a little help I can keep standing and get strength from the One who defeated it. And trust that one day there will be a happy ending. But meanwhile, nothing is ever as perfect as you want it to be.

The papers make particularly depressing reading today. Aggression, violence and murder. Everywhere. In my street. In my city. Across our country. All over our world. No thought. No kindness. No patience. No tolerance. No compassion. No love. No hope, it seems. Surrounded by cowards using violence, guns and knives. Leo Roskin is right. 'It is the weak who are cruel. Gentleness can only be expected from the strong'. Tomorrow is a new day, a new start with a new opportunity. And perhaps a new hope.
