This review is of our preview tracks on MySpace from our album 'Try Something Different'Review : Seven7 - 30/8/2009Reviewed By : Big Winters Formed
in 2006, but with line-ups finalised a year later, Seven7 hail from the
south of England and are doing everything they can to be more than just
your average band. With a regular performing Jazz guitarist on lead
guitar, a synth and fretless bass player and a frontman who also
handles the percussion section of the band, Seven7 refuse to go even
with the metal mainstream.
They hold there alternativeness in
high regard, speaking of their ‘tribal’ rhythms , and even going so far
as mentioning that there lead guitarist, Nick Meyer, can play such
instruments as teh Turkish Oud and Baglama’, whatever that is. Whether
or not this are useful instruments to such an industrial sounding metal
band, such as themselves, is debatable. They are one of a kind though.
They
have a 6 track preview of their debut album, Try Something Different,
available to stream from their myspace page. Their first track is the
title track of their debut album, and instantly shows that this band
really could go far. With impressive riffs, the added percussion and
the surprisingly melodic vocals, the first impressions are good, go to
the preview on their amazon page to hear the also impressive solo.
Following
up on this is the somewhat disappointing Stone, and Changing, both
showing that Seven7 really should avoid the slower numbers, but also
that Steve Smyth (Nevermore / Testament) still knows how to write a
good solo. Dream nearly suffers from this too, but is saved by a good
vocal effort, and a notable breakdown, and once again showing that they
are not afraid to break out the solo’s every now and again. Even so,
stick to the quick songs though guys, please?
Tears is really
where things get a bit more ‘different’. Starting with a ‘prog-esque’
opening, and going into a Nu-Metal style vocals, no screaming though,
as with all their music. All former reviews of this band mention Fear
Factory as bands of the same nature, and for this song in particular,
there are definitely right.
Freaks, their final song is
different type of beast as well, with a chugging opening riff, followed
by an uplifting melody, followed by a solo. It seems that Seven7 are
trying everything with this album, that will sometimes help or hinder
them, depending on your taste. Seven7
are giving off the vibe that they trying too hard to not be like every
other band on myspace. However, it is obvious that they have enough
talent to be above the average. This being their debut album, it’s
easier to see why they have tried so much, simply to see what’s best of
them as a band, give them time, and I’m sure they’ll find it. This is
the type of band I can imagine are able to blow you away live, and have
received good reviews in the past for doing so.
So, as ever,
check these guy’s out, it’s probably going to be a love-hate deal, but
these guys know what they are doing, and know how good they are. I’d
suggest getting the signed CD from their myspace while you’ve got the
chance, you never know, it could be worth something one day. 8/10 Big Winters

We've got the opportunity to play Shepherds Bush Empire supporting Esoterica (who are playing Download festival this year). However, it's a voting system, so we need as many votes as possible to win the support slot! If you could visit www.battleforshepherdsbush.com and vote for Seven7 that would be fantastic! :) Don't
forget about our album launch gig on June 15th at The Star in
Guildford. The CD is available now from our website and our MySpace.

Taming The Insane / Seven7 / Sister Ketamine / Subterranea (Hope & Anchor, 31st October 2006 ) Seven7 are amazing tonight - the four piece have a heavy metal vibe akin to Fear Factory, yet there are some wonderful touches that add a classical tinge to their sound - especially on the lead guitar solos. The singer growls out the vocal, super deep bass hums and purrs, guitar riffs can be machine like giving quite an industrial feel. Drums batter away solidly, with a tribal quality. The music is really rather grand and noble. Whether or not metal is your bag, these guys provide an exhilarating and spectacular set.

'SEVEN7 - 7 track Cd.
There's a real Fear Factory grind to the tight guitar sounds here, and the overall production is excellent with thick multi layered vocal and a big kit sound squeezed into the mix.
"Scream of the Bolero" gets things underway in majestic style, then hard hitting groove stomper "Different World" hits us. "Stone" is really out there. "Get This Away" is a torrid, punchy track, with great guitar riffs punctuating machine like drumming. The epic "Dream" picks up pace at the end and we are treated to some great guitar soloing. "No Promises" just hints toward Metallica. Frantic but melodious "Free" delivers tension and excitement.
Hard but oh so smooth.'
