I had the honor and privilege of touring with Raymond Raposas Castanets as drummer this past summer. I drummed on the first leg of the tour (2.5 weeks). Playing with Ryne Warner, Adam Mitchell and Ray was wonderful. One of my fave shows from the tour was the Queens/Brooklyn show at a warehouse like art/living space. Thunder and lightening were happening outside. It was dark and warm inside. This video is from Charlotesville Va. It's a Williams cover. We did play some hot shows. Wish there was more documented footage/pics. 'Take what you can get.' Peace -L

Hey Folks,
Here's a link to a video interview I took part in. There are four other subjects in this second installment, each of them true badasses. Nicholas Taplin is a one of a kind genius. This video is part two of his ongoing video interview series "What Do You Care About?" I am honored and excited that he asked me to participate. This interview took place back in June 2009 at my home studio. We spent over an hour together conversing, drinking 5 hour energy and beer. It was such a dang blast. Much thanks to Nicholas.
As a personal side note, I'd like to add that I've since then kicked booze for life. I realize that's a tall statement, not one to kick around lightly. I finally reached a point in my life wherein I realized that liqour was detracting from my quality of life. It became a problem for me that I could no longer ignore. I was what you'd call a binge drinker. In the past I've taken breaks from booze, however this time I'm playin for keeps. I thought I'd share this with whomever reads this as a way to promote positive energy in keeping healthy, and encouragement to anyone who may want to kick any substance or habit to do it/kick it. Kick it's ass. Booze ain't bad, my relationship with booze was bad. We had our last tango on July 4th in Detroit MI. Cheers. Take care and love the one you're with.
All the best, Lauren

Hey Friends,
I just added an old song of mine to my profile. "Portland, 1 minute." It's a song that was featured on the Portland Fun Book 7'' of 2008.
I tracked/..wrote/..performed it on the spot (as usual) in June 2008 before taking off for a road trip to FLA. This 'mix' is stereo imbalanced. The console I analog summed the digi track to had potentiometer problems, hence the in and out wavering of L R stereo field at the songs outro. This is the only mix of the track I could find.
Soon, when I re-archive and dig through the mountain that is my audio archives, I will perhaps come across the raw files and remix this silly song.
I hope you enjoy it. Thanks for your time and support.
Always, Lauren

LKN - Phratry EP (CD EP, Phratry, Progressive rock) Artistic integrity. The words flow so simply and yet...here and now in the twenty-first century there are relatively few artists who possess artistic integrity. In most cases, songwriters and bands want to craft their sound to appeal to a specific segment of the population. And in doing so, they limit themselves to the wealth of possibilities that the world offers. Lauren K. Newman is a pure and powerful exception to norms and rules in the world of music. Although most likely not on purpose, Phratry EP most certainly lacks commercial appeal. After all, how many listeners can deal with the fact that the EP opens with a violent blast of psychedelic guitar...while ending with a slow and methodical piano instrumental...? Although she plays with others in concert performances, on her recordings Lauren sings and plays everything herself. She's an intense whirlwind of sounds and ideas. Her songs have a nice, loose feel...a far cry from the majority of super polished recordings in the twenty-first century. (The press release states the obvious: "...perfection is boring."). Although she is playing for a very small audience, our guess is that Lauren will be an artist whose influence--over time--will be enormous. Recommended. (Rating: 5++)

Happy New Year.
It's reviews like this that make me put away the Wellbutrin.
Thank you so much for your continued support.
Bless you all,
Lauren

Free song on Phratry Records site Hello everyone, Hope you are each having a nice fall transition into winter. I love this season. No bullshit: OBAMA. Nuff said. So stoked. So stoked! Short entry here. Phratry Records of Ohio has a free mp3 download available of a song o' mine. Check out the bands on the site. Great stuff, great lable. http://www.phratryrecords.com/downloads/LKN_PaperInTheMail.mp3 This free song o mine was recorded on November 2nd I believe. Made up and jammed straight the hell out instantly. It's 'pop centric'. Made for eating ice cream cones and free balling to. How was your Thanksgiving? Great I hope. T and I free balled in the woods of Culver Oregon with Max, Taylor and Bertha. There was fire, fanfare and foreverness. See you soon. Best Always, Lauren

Thanks to David for this review. I haven't met him yet, but I do look forward to it.
Very nice. I am grateful.
Hope each of you are having a splendid October.
[Side note: I finally mixed the Tyrants record that I tracked back on 9.30.08.
I think they'll be selling the record at their next show.
Go see these guys at the Dunes on 11.14.08
F'ing nuts. Sick, nasty good performances, creative, explosive...like Birthday Party/Big Black. Bring ear plugs. Wear them.]
Yours,
Lauren

Here goes..
"Donkey By Lake" was originally titled "Rubric"...
I forgot about that as I uploaded it to myspace yesterday.
No matter however. Both titles are just supplement reference names of no particular importance. I used them in lieu of my usual reference titles for songs, i.e.:
'21 22', ' 7111819', '102108 2'.
Usually, obviously my reference titles are simply the date of the day the audio, skeletal sketch was recorded; or a numerical representaion of the songs place value in any given day, week, month or season.
Using numbers as reference titles (for 4 years now) is confusing at best by now. Truth be told, I do prefer it overall. Just sayin', it's a little crazy currently.
So, yes, a generic word or grouping of random words for a title is working better for me at this time currently.
Geeze.
So here's the real truth. I have been feeling very jumbled, wound up and chaotic inside. Not violent chaotic, just fractal chaotic. Like Chaos Dynamics in relation to the nano scale as oppossed to the macro scale.
I've been studying quantum physics and algebra lately. Admitedly, quantum physics is mind blowing. Mind blowing. Mind altering. I'm enjoying the challenge it is providing my mind though. I've also been balancing this intellectual workout with readings from Herman Hesse's "My Belief". It's a collection of essays authored by Hesse on many different subjects. However, I find among the essays a common theme of humanistic unity, soul, love, empathy and compassion. It is truly an up lifting selection of essays. Very healthy, happy and positive.
So here I stand, long winded. What I'm getting down to, is the fact that all this information I've been taking in lately is lending itself to some very Pollock like musical expression from me. The drums are in the back seat currently. Usually these nano chaotic internal disturbances would manifest themselve through my drumming.
I would usually fly into Dave Lombardo, Zach Hill land and lose myself completely...then follow up that unfurling with a 5 mile jog and a half hour weight lifting session.
(I exercise everyday, or at least 5 times a week. I've been a devoted jogger for 16 years now, and a weight lifter intermitently for 16 years.
But, lately I haven't been rocking the long endurance runs, just the stay fit jogs.)
So the guitar has been in the driver seat for a bit now. I have an obsessive urge to strangle my guitar at least once a day now (not a normal activity for me) and each time I do, I cannot stop my fingers from flying up and down the fret board.
*[Extreme side note: as a child instead of socializing I would go home from school, do my chores then go to my room, cue up Jeff Beck or Van Halen or Cream/Clapton on the record player and jam. Just straight jam to these records, then slow the record down with my finger to figure out certain licks. Everything I can do now on the guitar I could and would literally do by the age of 13. Literally. I went through a 'chops' hiding phase when I was in my twenties on both drums and guitar until around the age of 25. (I would purposely play 'indie' sloppy shite.) I still hid it on my recordings at that time. I buried the two handed playing beneath piano, and cut back on solos....but they were creeping in. Basically, for a long period I thought musically it wasn't okay to have chops...or use them. But, I'd subtley sneak it in...even at my first gig in Portland: November 10, 2001 at the Blackbird. I had a tune back then that involved rhythm and melody at the same time. So I did that and shredded live as usual. After the show, a nice guy approached me and offered to play second guitar so I wouldn't have to be so 'busy'. hmmmmm. So what I'm getting at is I think the nerd musician , though unschooled in theory or any real training, is coming out.....or coming back. Truthfully she's been here all along, just not so much publicly. Obviously, I don't have real musician chops. I know that. I have lkn (pronounced: "lickin' ") style chops. Which is to say, Pollock core, energy, passion, soul based. My soul expressing itself musically. Dig? Dig.]
This is where "Donkey By Lake" came from.
I know it's sloppy. It's spontaneous combustion recording to the max. But I feel and hear the fractals revealing themselves and making sense.
So, on a whim I uploaded this song on 10 23 08. I had to.
I'll likely take it down soon. I just thought it would be fun to share my experience as of late, and offer insight into this noise riot composition.
I wish to put light 'out there'. I feel I've been the recipient of some postive energy throughout life, and I always wish and strive to share it with all. We're all probably only alive on this planet once. Either way, I wish to spread and share love and good vibes whenever possible.
I thank all of you friends for sharing with me; and sharing in this audio, soul and text explosion with me; and in the real passion explosion: Life.
Love to You,
Lauren

Good Morning, Good Afternoon,
Here's a link to the Portland Mercury's blog site. "Premonition" is streamed on this page.
I've already tracked far better sounding takes at my home studio.(An EP of home recordings soon to be released in conjunction with the Vinyl release of "No Smoking Room"). Wouldn't you know my 'rush job' recording is released to the public. That's my fault for sucking at the art/science of life. However it represents (as do all my recordings) my "Single Pass" theory/approach to recording. Do one or two takes, but play the babe all the way through as one would a live performance in front of various humans. Real musicianship and passion, and sloppyness and then some; tight and/or winsome. What ev's bro, you catch my drift.
T and I are taking a road trip to the midwest. Heading out to the cracked, bare dry lands of mountain ranges, and arid flatlands. Taking the tascam 424mkIII along for the ride. Maybe cut some slow burning tracks along the Red River, maybe I'll just shut up, drive and listen to the heartbeat of the flat road. Maybe.
Thanks for your time and support.
Always,
Lauren

Hello everyone. I am excited right now. I likely will be so excited for a very long time. this excitement is the result of recieving via US postal service a huge box of "Postulate II" on vinyl. All thanks to Jerry Dirr of Phratry Records of Ohio USA for making this dream of mine come true. Thanks also to Todd Berry of Greyday Records of Portland OR for partnering up on this badboy. Yay! So, I've got em'. Write, message or call me if you'd like to buy a P2 LP +CDEP 10 bux plus shipping. If you're local (pdx) and you'd like to purchase P2 +CDEP, please message, txt or call me and we'll make it happen. I've got gigs. you could meet me there?: Palo Verde @ Dunes aug 27 ; Palo Verde @ Dantes aug 30.. feel free to meet up with me at those times...or tomorrow night(saturday aug 16) at Mississippi Pizza. I'll be running sound from 8-midnight. I'll be working the door at Dunes Sunday night(aug 17) 900pm-the am. Stop by. I'm so thankful, grateful for this opportunity. Hope you're all having a splendid summer day. My best to each of you, Lauren p.s. The other night as I was running sound a woman informed me that I can't rightfully use the word "y'all". Her reasoning is that Pensacola fla (where I'm from) is not 'the south'. True, fla is divided; any town south of Jacksonville is considered 'snowbird', northeast-what-have-you, and generally north of j-ville is considered lower alabama/georgia. whatever. All I know is growing up in p'cola even some teachers said "y'all". I've used it alot. It's lazy linguistics, but it's fun. So, thanks y'all for everything. good day.

While I may have you here still, may I please announce, I am in the mixing stages of a new Palo Verde album. We cut it at DIG in April. It's mammoth.
Also, I am finally completing "No Smoking Room". I tracked this boy in February at Audible Alchemy. I shall schedule mix time with Christina Files soon.
A canyons EP is in the works as well. We will track at DIG studios this fall.
I've also tracked an EP to be released on CD-r with hand made packaging utilizing scrap paper from about the house (intended for recycling originally). It will be available through Grey Day and Phratry. "July 5th EP". I made this puppy on my birthday with the intentions of only selling it at my b-day show at the E-Room. As things seem to go too often, 'it didn't happen'. No worries mate, (to quote the Austrailian subway girl via Alex Da-mon Stewart) Y'all can hear it if you like soon enough.
Also, Crunch bars are 2 for a dollar at Walgreens.
I Love You.
