Asbury Lanes:
Bands + bowling = fun

By Phil Rainone

FULL BLOWN CHERRY - Asbury Lanes- Asbury Park, NJ April 3, 2005

The first thing that hits you when you walk into Asbury Lanes (209 4th Ave. in Asbury Park) is the sense of nostalgia: Wood paneling all around, old funhouse stuff (like a 5-foot clown & happy girl face masks), AND 16 lanes for bowling, no waiting!

Asbury Lanes still has that cool vibe from when I was a kid, when it took a half-hour train ride and what seemed like a gazillion block walk (actually about 7 - are-we-there-yet?) to the amusement park with my family, and it was THE place to go for rides, food, and a cool carnival atmosphere back in the 60's.

One of the guy's that's helping keep this scene alive is owner/manager/artist Mel Schultz. Along with his cronies (sound guys, bartenders, cool cats & kittens,) the self-proclaimed "King Rat"- he got he moniker from his father- is the kind of guy who's focused and fun to be around. He's into building hot rods and running the club. He's brings his love of Asbury, cars, and music into the mix - especially the music. Bands & DJ's (who only spin vinyl) play rockabilly, garage, rock 'n roll, & punk exclusively.

Want another example of how cool this joint is? Lenny Lounge (one of the coolest guys to wear shades this side of Cali, the mastermind behind those unique & cool Retro-Swing/Rockabilly/Punk/Garage shows at the Leopard Lounge in Sayreville) hangs there. Besides building the stage at Asbury Lanes, he also rebuilt the Leopard Lounge, when it was just a dilapidated banquet hall.

So now that you're got an idea of the cool vibe there, the bands are even cooler! Upcoming shows feature The Forty-Fives, Rev. Horton Heat (maybe you can get him to bless your bowling ball!), the Pie Tasters, and Dick Dale, King of the Surf Guitar. And don't forget about Punk Rock Karaoke with The Ergs as your back-up band. I hear they're tight! (Check www.asburylanes.com for the upcoming schedule.)

This night featured a Hot Rod show, a drive-in movie (both of which were rained out, but will be rescheduled), and the rockabilly trio Full Blown Cherry. Despite the light turnout because of the torrential rain, these cats played like their lives depended on it.

Ok, before I forget, the stage for the bands is located between lanes 8 & 9. Yeah, the band plays at the top of the lanes and people can pretty much bowl right along side of 'em. How cool is that!!

Full Blown Cherry consists of Johnny Lingo on bass, Halsey B Gone on drums, and Steve Del Ray, guitar. These cats are HOT! As in, they will rock your socks off with their fiery, raucous brand of rockabilly! Besides originals like "Draggin," & "Deep Dark Jungle," they threw out covers of "Maybelline" that they freshened up, giving the classic a fresh coat of paint. They also covered the Ramones' "Cretin Hop," slowing it down just a bit, & twistin' it with a rockabilly groove, then turning the hyper-kenetic punk rock tune into their own. As a matter of fact, the band will be doing a tribute album to the Ramones that sounds like it won't be a run-of-the-mill collection (For more details, visit their website, fullblowncherry.com). They topped off their set with several three-minute blasts of rockabilly boogie. These ncluded a reverberating cover of "Flying Saucer Rock & Roll," along with originals like "Devils Eyes," and "Give Me a Woman," both of which featured Steve DelRay on guitar. Johnny & Halsey held down a solid rhythm section that DelRay built on and that matched the fiery guitar style of Danny Gatton. Like I said these guys cooked!!

In between the live music, DJ Scared Stiff is spinnin' pure unadulterated vinyl records – rockabilly, jump blues, old & new stuff - that kept the place jumpin'.

They also have food from burgers to sushi (out-of-this-world, from what I'm told!), and the potato gems are to die for from what Miss Debra (cool rockin' kitten/singer/writer) said.

Dust off your bowling shows and get to a show. When you're at Asbury Lanes, you know you're in Coolsville!!
