Equaleyes - While I'm Alive CDMarch 18th, 2009 | Posted by: leeway This album, featuring engaging vocals, likable melodies, and catchy guitar riffs, will please those who like well-crafted, tight songs. However, there are enough ragged edges, distortion, and crunchy chords to satisfy the lovers of funk and rock-n-roll as well. Featuring skilled guitar work from Jeff Crosby, lilting keyboards from Daniel Blumenfeld (aka “The Hawk”) and a pleasant fusion of diverse musical styles (think reggae, funk, Southern rock, and even “pop”), this album has an optimistic, infectious spirit that inspires repeated listens. In researching the band for this review, I read that the band formed in 2006, has opened for the Wailers and the Jerry Garcia Band and has played to increasingly enthusiastic response across Idaho, Utah, and Colorado. The band has played primarily on the West Coast, but hopes to carve its own distinct foothold in the East as well. The songs on this album demonstrate them to be capable of such a feat, as Crosby’s lyrics and voice are appealing and smooth, his guitar work is spectacular, and he meshes nicely with the talented rhythm section. Joining Crosby and Blumenfeld in Equaleyes is drummer Will Prescott and bassist Tom Borda. “While I’m Alive” begins with a track called “Who Pretends?” This track showcases Crosby’s pleasing vocals and soaring guitar and ultimately concludes in a sonic wash of keyboards, drums, and bass. “Home,” an energetic, likable track punctuated by Crosby’s playful, honey-dripped guitar work, is delightful, fun and guaranteed to move the head and the hips. “Flyin,” is one of the more straightforward “rock” songs on this album, but demonstrates Blumenfeld’s lilting keyboard work more predominantly than any other track. The strength of the keyboard playing alone on this track makes it one of the more pleasing songs on the album. “Head in the Clouds” features whimsical guitar and lyrics before sailing into exploratory, loosely structured waters. From here, the song melds hard funk grooves with blistering guitar before returning home in the same light-hearted fashion with which the song began. “Eclipse” first comes into focus with airy guitar but goes further as Crosby begins wailing on his guitar in frantic fashion. This dynamic tension is replicated by the keys, drums, and bass as “Eclipse” washes away. “Somethin’ In the Way,” an engaging ballad, and “Where’s Your Love,” with its tinges of infused reggae, showcase Crosby’s lyrics, vocals and guitar work attractively. The album closes with “While I’m Alive,” which seems like a lingering, wistful conclusion. However, these notions are quickly dispelled with an unlisted “bonus track.” This track begins in ethereal fashion, but ratchets up the intensity with a full-fledged guitar and funk jam to close the album in more aggressive fashion. In reviewing this album, I find it to be refreshing and spirited, influenced and grounded by classic musical forms, but not entirely derivative of them either. There is a definite conciseness and focus to these songs that keeps them sharp and “on-point.” “While I’m Alive” takes the best elements of several genres and puts them together in an attractive, likable package. I look forward to hearing more about Equaleyes’ musical adventures, and hope to see them somewhere on the festival circuit soon. - By J. Evan Wade

Hey everyone. If you're sitting inside, then go float the river; if you're floating the river, sweet, then come to Terrapin tonight and help honor brother Brian; if you can't come to the show tonight then it's truly tragic because I think I've finally worked up the courage, the stone-cold bravery to cut away some more of my short-shorts, and I'll be sporting them tonight (all I ask is that you at least attempt to keep the ball-jokes to a minimum). Oh, and check out the new entries on the webpage (equaleyeslive.com, it's the Road Journal link) my dog helped me write them.

Day 9 Boulder > Buffalo, WY
Will's 25th Birthday!
We drove through most of Wyoming and arrived at the Cowboy Saloon in Buffalo unsure what to expect. The people were great, we met the owner's of the bar, Jim and Terry Purdy (who helped fund the new album), the crowd helped in a late night drum jam, we got Will real drunk via many odd concoctions, and we stayed in two little cabinas at the Blue Gables across town. Oh, and during the drive up I saw a stoic black stallion leading a herd of wild horses; he was a hundered yards ahead, paused with ears straining, reading the land he would lead his kind into.
Quote of the Day: "You're hammered Will." "As long as everything is on a slant for you guys too, then I think I'm alright." --Will during vanride from the bar
Day 10 Buffalo
After checking out of the cabinas we headed out to the Purdy Ranch for a lovely pancake and omelet breakfast, compliments of Joel the pilot. The Purdys were participating in a sort of motorcycle scavenger hunt around the region so their lovely daughter Kim acted as our tour guide and led us into the canyon at the back of their property. The canyon is known as Billy Creek Canyon after one of a pair of brothers that ran a bootleg still in a small cabin up thataway (the pic of us hanging off a dilapitated cabin). Up-canyon we explored a mountain lion den, jumped the creek a few times, saved a mouse from the jaws of Kim's dog Aegis (named after Zues' shield), rolled boulders down the canyon wall (a few of which Hawk had to dive out of the way of), and generally got acquainted with north-Wyoming backcountry. Then it was back down to civilization and round two of the Cowboy Saloon. Jim's 92-year old mother, who used to write songs, attended and genuinely enjoyed the music thoroughly. An old man berated me lengthily for having the volume above "conversation level". Oh, and the night before Jim, Joel, and Terry slept on a bar table, bar floor, and blackjack table, respectively. After the show we journeyed back out to the ranch for venison spaghetti, coronas, a viewing of Terry's kick-ass country music video, and a strong sense of family. They had a tragic death in the family in the last year and I felt palpably their support of one another.
Quote of the Day: "We lost the keys again?"
"It's the second key-tastrophe."
Day 13 Redstone, CO > Durango, CO
Last night we pulled into a campsite around midnight near Redstone, veered wide of the paybox, and prepared four cans of soup for five people over a fire. Darrin passed out shortly thereafter in his s. bag on top of the picnic table, which had to be adventurous when it started raining a few hours later. Hawk and I did our best at a bottle of whiskey but crashed in the van before long. The remainer of the drive to Durango was unbelievably full of beauty. After watching the peaks grow and become more rugged we finally pulled off outside Ourey at an amphitheater trailhead. There was a bridge spanning an incredible waterfall carving it's way up a Rocky, and we ran around like small boys. Hawk and I ventured up the hydraulically curved, carved and smoothed stream channel and into a small canyon. A few refreshing climbing moves later we were at a small waterfall and impasse where I stubbed my toe. I reached down to investigate and possibly chastise whatever I'd snagged, and was shocked to find an enormous quartzite geode lying in the stream. I picked it up and felt like a north-african aboriginal boy locating his spirit stone. I climbed down the canyon with one hand and showed my find to the others-- I also began to understand better The Excitement Of The Rockhound. Will was intrigued immediately and after procuring a beer or two Will, Jeff, Hawk, and I headed back upstream to further investigate. Our search culminated with the lot of us acting like a bunch of ape-ish miners banging rocks together in hopes of finding more crystals, which we did in abundance. Further up the highway waterfalls appeared left and right, including one that traveled under the road via an enormous dynamited tunnel then fell away raging at a 45* angle, and another that slished over the road atop a concrete slide-barrier. Next was a deserted mining settlement at 10,000 ft, then a chinese fire-drill at the most picaresque road construction site, then a crystal disco ball that Will made by cleaning each individual crystal face meticulously with a razor blade. We pulled into Durango and got to hang with The Beavers (Kyla and Kevin, whose wedding we played last summer) They are doing great, they have a delectable vinyl collection, and are making some of the coolest tie-dye around. We set up at The Summit on a stage surrounded by windows overlooking a courtyard and street below. The crowd was quite drunk-- several hit the dancefloor like they were unintentionally sliding into home-- but were impressed by a "new, practiced band on musical steroids". Afterwards we listened to Cream and Jimi records and I slept in their VW pop top.
Quote of the Day: "Just cause we're free doesn't mean we're cool." --Will discussing the 4th of July
Day 14 (6*12*08) Durango > Telluride
Awoke this morning feeling peaceful and incredibly well-rested. Kevin returned home from his job helping people get ahold of their medical debts for lunch on his skateboard wearing a tie-dyed button up business shirt. This made me smile; I must have one. We made a honey depsit-- the Purdy's gave us a huge tub of ranch-raised honey and we've been trying to give some away everywhere we stay-- made plans for future awesomeness, and headed northwest. The first order of business for leisure was to stop at Mesa Verde (green table) Nat'l Park where Pueblos built their homes into canyon walls. Being on a timeline, we could only cruise through tourist style, snap a couple pictures, get up close and personal to some poison ivy, and hike down to one of the palaces, which was ingeniusly constructed and intact. They carved footholds into the cliff walls-- think of breaking trail on a snowy slope except with the now elusive timeless patience the Pueblo nurtured-- and climbed to the plateau above to farm. We pulled into Telluride-- reminiscent of Banff-- with enormous peaks all around, aspen groves covering entire ridges, a tall waterfall diving through the hole in a snowbank it carved and into the underworld. The Fly Me To The Moon Saloon is a funky mountain town club with old basement rock walls that speak rock history. We explored, salivating over the tags and stickers of our favorite bands that'd played there before us. Hawk and I strolled into the pizza joint up the way to several dudes standing on their barstools pumping fists, and literally the whole joint yelling at the top of their lungs. Figuring the thin mountain air had gotten to the locals, we stuck around for slices and silliness. We waded through the throng of established drinkers-- contracting a contact-drunk in the process-- and found a seat just as Dropkick Murphy's came on, to which vocal chords were pushed to truly masochistic heigths. Back at the Saloon a few people danced first set though my view from the merch table was blocked by a couple displaying the kind of tonsil-hockey I though only existed in parody-films and highschool gymnasiums. At setbreak I met the former drummer of my neighbor's (in Boise) band, my room mate's co-worker, and a friend of Kyla and Kevin's that invited us to stay for the night.
Quote of the Day: "I'm dancin' FAST!....so fast the band sped up!" --crusty pee-pants drunk who spoke mostly pirate
Friday the Thirteenth Telluride > Moab
Awake at Eich and Misty's on the floor of their home theater, complete with projection screen, theater seating, projection booth, and track lighting. His full name is Ernest P. Eich IV and he is a freelance film maker and knows Hoony from when ol' Hoonhout used to play rock n roll there. Their apartment is upstairs from the first bank Butch Cassidy ever robbed. They report hauntings. We ventured into the bustling streets of friday morning T-Ride nestled between unfathomable peaks and The Bluest Skies, and stumbled across the first farmer's market of the season. I smelled and tasted things people grew and made, then we took the gondola (ganj-dola) to the top of the ski hill for free-- it's considered public transportation there. At the top we scoped terrifying ski runs, I found 35 cents, and we filled ourselves with Rocky Monsters on this last Colorado afternoon of the tour. We made one last stop with Matt (former V.O.R. drummer) at Bridalveil Falls, the tallest in CO. At the brink of the falls sits a white two-story house. In addition to the living area, in the basement, resides a hydroelectric system utilizing the falls to glean power. The guy got a 99-year lease from the mining company at $1/ year, moved his family up for a time, ferrying supplies up the cliff with a series of cables and baskets. Now he just sells the surplus energy to the town. Enroute to Moab I threw a watermelon out the window and a mileage marker sliced it in two like a Hatori Hanzo. At the show I met an aussie named Grogg who possessed an incredible talent for spinning in circles while bush-whistling. Afterward we had a soak outside the hotel, then walked across town, snuck into a bed N breakfast, and swam and soaked some more.
