Being a DJ is bit of a paradox. You get your hands dirty with an inorganic style of music. Using cut and paste buttons, your creativity is tested by recycling and refurbishing pre-existing beats. Essentially, you use computer tools to craft a song. It's a thoroughly modern way to be an artist, because you're still employing hands, mind and forethought, and your tunes will either end up blaring amidst strobe lights and hits of Ecstacy at the clubs and raves, or as shopping background music at the local Hollister or Abercrombie and Fitch store. DJ I-Dee sexes it up with Solitude, a mish-mash that combines spoken word intros, sound bytes, waves of looped beats and just about anything he can get his mitts on. There's a bit of a hipster element omnipresent on Solitude, but if you want to tweak out and generate a little disconnect between your mind and body for a few hours, than this is the album for such a task.

"Marble Oasis" is swathed in new age funk. With its lilting, gentle loop and what sounds like chirping birds, it's like something you'd hear at a wellness spa or at a high end boutique, thanks to the funkadelic, heavy percussion. "1991" prances out of the gate in a similar way, with keyboards escalating in a way that'll affect your mood in a positive way. DJ I-Dee knows how to lull listeners into a trance with his musical moves and ebbs and flows. "Explosions" is the most structured and listenable-dare we say "mainstream"?- song on the record, because it features the hardcore rap stylings of Royce Da 5'9", who drops the verbage in his sing-song cadence all over this mechanized, industrial'esque track which houses thunderous beat work. This is the jam that you'll find yourself hitting the "repeat" button for. For the most part, though, this is an acquired taste for a niche audience.

DJ I-Dee
The Right feat. Jean Grae & Wrekonize

DJ I-Dee has clearly spent a lot of time in front of Grand Theft Auto of late. The new video for his track "The Right" features leggy ladies and car jackings galore, and we can't tear our eyes away from anything Jean Grae has a hand in. Oh, and the editing on this one pretty much blows most other music videos out of the water.

DJ I-Dee :: Solitude :: Adiar Cor Records

as reviewed by Steve 'Flash' Juon

Back in August a turntablist named DJ I-Dee got my attention by releasing a single with Jean Grae and Wrekonize called 'The Right.' The idea of using video game samples in hip-hop songs is nothing new, but I-Dee still
managed to flip the script by taking the victory fanfare from Final Fantasy VII (the little ditty that plays when you defeat an enemy) and jacking the prolonged instrumental that comes AFTER IT to make one hell of a cool song. Unfortunately the legal beagles at Square-Enix, the makers of the Final Fantasy series, didn't think the idea was as cool as I-Dee did. Our hero quickly found his hopes of releasing 'The Right' as the first single
from his national debut album vanquished, despite the fact a video had already been shot for it. There's a lesson to learn here kids - never assume that your track is going to make an album no matter how obscure the loop you jacked is. Maybe I-Dee should have done a remix of 'The Right' with the FF7 death requiem all the same, just to mock the fact Square-Enix threw away perfectly good money not clearing his sample.

There's more to I-Dee than just video game samples though. Born Isaac DeLima, this young disc jockey grew up in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. and began making tracks when he was just 10 years old. He entered his first turntablist battles in 2002 and has been defeating better known foes in throwdowns ever since. I-Dee completed a grand slam two years ago at only 19 by winning the DMC USA, Scribble Jam and Gong World Supremacy titles in the span of just six months. It's going to be a long time before any DJ comes along and so thoroughly dominates the competition in such a short span of time, and for I-Dee it was the kind of performance he'd never be able to top, so it was only natural that he move into the arena pioneered by the likes of DJ Qbert and the X-Ecutioners - a full-length album showcasing beats AND scratching techniques all at once.

'Solitude' is the youngster's first full length album and it's no laughing matter, even though the visage of the Joker seems to be leering at us underneath his leather jacket. It's only ten tracks long, and two should be thrown out given one is only a 47 second long intro and the other is humorously titled 'Eating Up Time' (even though he denies being funny) but for those other eight he's not wasting any time or effort. 'The Scratch' lives up to the name by showcasing some hardcore cutting skills, interspersed with samples talking about the history of turntable manipulation. Not every song is DJ I-Dee showing off his formidable skills alone though. An all-star cadre of rappers join I-Dee on 'Explosion' - Royce Da 5'9', Tamu and C-Rayz Walz all take the time to shine on it. As dope as it is the Ill Insanity shines even more on 'Brutally Raw,' a group consisting of Rob Swift, Total Eclipse and Precision showcasing their skills on the wheels of steel together.

DJ I-Dee's most curious track may be '1991,' a song which I first assumed had to be a tribute to a year he wasn't even old enough to remember. Instead the song features I-Dee creating a beat with some very subtle juggling of drum tracks, laced together with a very ethereal instrumental that suggests no year in particular - although if you HAD to pick one year could in fact be an instrumental for Deltron 3030. I-Dee is a musical eclectic who seems to view the layering of multiple levels of organic sounds as being just as important as showing off his formidable competition-level scratching, which makes 'Solitude' a worthwhile album far beyond just the small disc jock niche similar albums get unfairly lumped into. Listening to the closer 'Anxiety Free' I can easily imagine I-Dee crafting the soundtrack for a show on [adult swim] or producing beats for an album by Canibus - he'd be equally at home in either realm. As he said himself on 'The Right,' you can't control the soundwaves without the right I-Dee.

Isaac DeLima, aka DJ I-DEE, has carved out a name for himself in the world of scratch music, having already conquered the battle scene by winning three of its most prestigious titles--the Disco Mix Club (DMC) USA Supremacy, Scribble Jam and Gong World Supremacy--all within six months of each other and by the age of 19. Past winners include internationally recognized names including DJ Q-bert, Mixmaster Mike and DJ Craze. At age 20, he decided to leave his battle career behind and focus on creating new music by using the skills he developed as a deejay. And now, a seasoned DJ and performer at the age of 21, DJ I-DEE will release his debut full length album of original material SOLITUDE via Adiar Cor Records on August 26.

DJ I-DEE is constantly searching for new and innovative ways to blur the lines between genres. His winning performance at the DMC USA Supremacy saw him mix hip hop, hard rock, 80's pop and Darth Vader all while entertaining the crowd with his incredible stage presence. SOLITUDE connects with listeners on a musical level that's not strictly catering to hip-hop or turntablism fans but lovers of all genres. He honors the past with his style of producing, while still maintaining a new sound.

SOLITUDE features guest appearances by Royce Da 5'9", C-Rayz Walz, Ill Insanity, Tamu and Rites of Ash. One collaboration that isn't on the album is his stellar track with indie hip-hop's leading female rapper Jean Grae and South Florida-based rapper Wrekonize, "The Right." The samples on the track were not cleared for the album but the song can be downloaded at www.myspace.com/djidee. A take-off of the video game sample found throughout the song, the innovative video follows Wrekonize and Jean Grae trapped in a video game world. The video will premiere today, August 4 on I-DEE's MySpace page.

DJ I-DEE began his DJ career at the age of 10, growing up in suburban Washington DC, where he would sneak into his older brother's room and practiced scratching using his turntables when he was out of the house. He began battling in 2002, leading to his victories in 2006. Since retiring from battles, he has moved on to perform his signature sets, including live DVD mixing, around the world in places such as England, the Czech Republic, South America, Taiwan and China. DJ Q-bert recently said of I-DEE, "…just as b-boys are dancers, I-Dee reminds us that DJs are entertainers."
