I just had the 2 best days of work EVER  =)

I went down to this little snice-slice of paradise on the coast. Near the infamous Bells Beach….

I finished for the week on Monday, and had nothing but Sweet F'all on the cards, except for Lee coming around to jam on the drum kit with Will and I on Tues. So I called up Mr Lee to confirm the next days session.

First words Lee said to me were "So ya fell like drivin to Ocean Grove tonight"

"What the" I replied "don't think so mate, I'm stuffed and don't feel like driving down there. Are you coming back here tomrw…?"

yeah yeah  blah blah.

I hung up the phone….and pondered with Will for a good half hour to decide if we should pack up most of our gear and road trip down there to jam instead.

It was still to hot to sit in my car to drive for an hr & a half and Will had to go to his folks for dinner. We agreed that we'd rather wake up 800m's from the ocean…instead of our boring little suburb…with no beach.

Done.

When Willbur get back from his folks we'll leg it down there.

Lee was stoked with the news when I called him back; his original plan was to come back to Melbourne to rehearse, and then head back to the beach. Crazy plan!

So the Mountain heads to Mohammad. About 9.30pm

With the 'Mule' (truckcarvan) loaded; A little mixer, 3 guitars, PA speaker, mic stands, leads, Double Bass, full drum kit (including stool), 1 9ft"6 oldskool Mal surfboard, and 2 very talented and determined hippies!

Next to no traffic in sight, the freshness of a cool-change breeze rushing to blow into the car windows, passing straight thru and out the open tail-gate. Tickling the 9inch surfboard fin that's overhanging over the whistling black road, still warm from the sweltering days heat.

The vibe in the car was high. With a trumpet blowing once we entered the Freeway, good music was the topic of little conversation.

We rolled into Ocean Grove about 11pm, met Lee at a local café that just so happened to have a open jam on Monday evenings. Lee had been entertaining himself and the locals with his own music with his trusty guitar.

By the time we'd arrived, the sheets had been through the wash and were ready to be hung out and dried. The uncollected collective sound of all the old-time local rockers gathered on the poky corner stage. Armed with their cherished instruments, which are no doubt kept hidden from the grandchildren during summertime holidays, we're out on their weekly trip to town. Swinging like monkeys across their 8 bar-blues progression. In what could be a never ending session?

They held their own though…. I'll be an old rocker one day. So I'm just getting a glimpse of my future really. After afew years in these traps, I've noticed that there isn't a lot of room for the Wrinkled-Riffer.  But still they come out of the woodwork-shed, and if they're lucky enough one of their children will be there front row…. flashing back to campfires and marshmallows.

But us three boys we're on a different adventure, and we're in a hurry to catch up to them as fast as we could….the more you live the faster it goes by.

It wasn't til the next day Lee told us how many beers bottles he'd polished that afternoon, and into the evening.

….Somehow he made a 4min drive back to the beachhouse last for a good 15mins, giving me directions WITH A MAP! Leading us down several dead end streets, and "yep, take this one right here's, its' right"

We were in no hurry, and it was a nice way to get to know the residential area too.

The house was really a modern shack; 1 bedroom, open living room with sofas, and a kitchen at one end, and a bathroom. We unloaded the gear we didn't wish to cook in the car with the morning heat, and headed to the ocean to offer our warm feet to the refreshing lapping waves.

Put a guitar in Wills hands and your going to end up with bluegrass/chicken-picking/folk/country, blues tunes in a matter of minutes…all in one song sometimes too.

So our soundtrack during the 5min meander to the sand was Lee on Hill-Billy free-styled lyrics about road kill, close family relations, pickup trucks and moonshine. With Will providing the backbone guitar parts, while I'd just throw in some harmonies, and mostly enjoy the randomness unfolding in around me.

Good times with just one guitar….and 3 fools.

With the height of summer pretty much over and schools being back in, holiday makers had made their mark for the time being. And we were free to enjoy the ocean adventure without encountering a single sand printing sole.

Woken the next morning by the early escape of Lee's footsteps into the day, I re-buried my head under darkening sheets and resumed my stay in Slumberland for another hrs or so. When the heat of the room had reached its unsleepable temperature I rose from my fold-out nest. Will was soon to follow, and we prepared ourselves a wake and bake.

Lee had strolled himself back to the café in town for a Cafe cooked breakfast, and before you could say 'Lets roll' we we're ordering "garlic mushrooms and scrambled eggs on toast, with a soy latte please"

'And for you sir' says the waitress turning to Will.

"Big Vegie Breaky, and an orange juice with ginger thankx"

Before we could move all the gear in the little shack, we had to take some things out; Television, double fold out couch and a coffee table. We all had a kind of cheeky/guilty feeling about us. Knowing Lee was offered this place as a getaway for afew days whilst on holidays from work by a friend, who would have no idea what we had planned this afternoon.

Imagine the phone call to Lee….

"Yeah, me and some mates are down here right now, love the place. We've just wheeled the TV into the bedroom for the moment, no biggy, so we could set up a drumkit on the floorboards (using a rug tho). We had no room for Will and his big-ass bass, so we had to put the couch on the front lawn. But that's perfect because we can sit on it during breaks and drink beer and smoke spliffs in the sun. We spoke to you neighbor earlier and she's fine with us playing music all day, and there's no one else near by in their holiday house's because there mostly rentals. Anyways, nice talking to you, thankx for letting us stay here….and so close to the beach too.  Bye"

….My Granddad's old beach retreat has been taken over by hippies.

And it was for only two days tho. And we returned it better than when we found it. You wouldn't even know that 3 musicians sweated it out all afternoon in shoe box working on toe-tapping music. We gave that room some good vibes, and a preview of the good things to come.

After a 10 hr plane ride from Hawaii to Syd. I was rejoicing at the fact my feet were coming back to my home land, as i walked along the corridor from the plane to the baggage collection area.
With my new elec guitar in one hand and my on board travel bag in the other, i find myself a trolley and wait for the Wheel a fortune luggage game to begin.
Suitcases of all shapes and sizes begin to show their patterns as they circle around the weary eyed, worn out travelers.

'Custom sharks' eyes-ball the waiting schools, looking or the guilty....The lone male, here for business, pleasure or terror.
The first shark strikes...
"passport thankx sir"
"certainly, here you are" i reply as i pull my little navy blue book from my breast pocket. On hand, ready for the predictable.
He looks at page 2, then looks at me, looks at page 2 again...just to make sure. Asks me the usual questions he was told to ask during training.
Puts a line thru my blank "Items to declare for customs" side of my custom entry from to Aus. Signs his initials in the upper corner. Then continues swimming.
Less than 10 seconds later.
Strike 2.
"Can i see you papers there sir" asks a younger slightly more nervous fella.
"Geez, what is it about me, is there something written on my forehead" i joke with the predator smiling.
"ohhh sorry sir" He apologies once his seen the 2 letters marks left behind by the previous shark, and swims away with his tail between his gills.

Power of the mind, strikes harder....

My bag circles around, i heave it from the never ending wheel. And wait for guitar number 2 to show its case.

"Oversize luggage's over there i think sweet heart"
says the gentleman to his wife waiting next to me.
Under polite marital order she walks away from her lifetime lover, leaving him to fend for himself or a minute.
Lonesome male alert...
Strike 1.
"Papers and passport please sir"
He fishes thru his hand luggage for the requested items, answers the usual questions with ease.
A standard catch and release.

"Excuse me sir, would guitars come out at oversize luggage area" i ask the officer once his done releasing the previous catch.
"yes they would. Papers and passport please sir"
Strike 3
"Where'd that one come from" he questions pointing to my trolley, looking for cracks in my lines.
"That guitar came on the plane with me, i've got another one from underneath the plane i'm waiting for" i respond.
"What's types that one there"
"Schecter, semi hollow" i proudly tell him.
"Ohh, i've got a beautiful Maton at home" he responds with pride.
I smile and tell him "That's what i'm waiting on, and hopefully she's still in one piece"
My papers return to my hand, another catch and release, and i head over to the Oversized luggage area. Passing by the senior sharks on the level above, scanning and directing the newbies below.
After afew minutes of waiting my baby glides out safe and sound from behind the plastic curtain.
I add the final item to my trolley, and join the HUGE line of lucky travelers waiting to have their bags X-rayed for exotic products.
Step by step, wheel turn by wheel turn, the line shortens.
After standing still less than 1 minute, i heard a aged voice beside me.
"Looks like you've been doing a bit of backpacking there sir"...another well trained shark here i think to myself.
"Indeed, good to back home tho" i respond with pleasure
"No worries, i'll leave you in the line then"
Strike 3.5
10 minutes later at the queue's bottle neck, waits a lady of fate with 2 options. She can point you down the left lane ropes where you've have your private items scanned and fondled by her colleges. Or go down the right road, expressway to 'freedom' and my friend who awaits my arrival.
"How are you today" she probes "Not carrying any food items with you today sir" fast-talker, cuts straights to the point...my type of women.
"Nup, no food in here" come the answer at lightning pace (i was getting really good at answering questions by then)
"Soooo you're a guitar painter" she asks inquisitively, as she reads my occupation.

Not that i've painted a guitar in 8months since i left my last job in Melbourne. But when i filled out the from on the plane, it seemed like a better answer than 'Traveling Hippy Musician'

"Thats not a very common job is it" she continues as she looks at the 2 black guitar case under my backpack, sitting neatly on my trolley in front of me.
"Alright, you can head on thru" she tells me with a favored tone

So down the right lane i go.
Express into the "lucky" country.....
What a lovely welcoming party to my own country.

It would've been easier if I had of written another blog in between now and, oh say the last 2 months. Because there's no way I can squeeze everything in here.
Last time checked in here I'd just arrived in Buffalo. I kinda just came from Buffalo too. (no I didn't get stuck there for 2 months, its was a cool place…but not that cool)
I'm in sunny Santa Cruz California at the mo, catching up with an old friend before heading to play in San Fran next week. Then up to Mendocino to play at the Living Culture Festival.

The Festival Darren and Co organized in Buffalo was the perfect place I needed to be after a month in NYC. The festival was set about an hr Sth of Buff on a fair-few aches of land, surrounded by trees and nature…and a lot of Amish people. Was a bit surreal hanging out around the festival, and you hear the clip-clop of Amish carts on the near by road carrying afew bags of grain, gallons of milk and friendly smiles and waves. …who's missing out on what, us or them eh?
The festival was independent and fairly lowkey, so it wasn't over run with ppl mayhem (maybe acouple of 100, if that). But the vibe was perfect. It was like all the cool goodtime-loving cats from Buff had come out to Beat Fest to escape the small town vibe, and see some good music for a weekend. Big respect to Jony James Blues Band-The hardest working band I've ever seen. Who also allowed me to play during their break acouple of time in Downtown Buff. Which was some of the best gigs I've done on this Journey. The ppl there love their music…I'll def be passing thru again.

Toronto was a slight change of pace….Back to the big smoke.
I guess TO was a lot like Melbourne….but so not too.
I spent about a month there…maybe to long. But I was worth it. I wanted to spread myself as far and wide a possible, playing as much as I could. It's a tough town to make waves in, due to its size, and sheer number of artist all trying to do 'their' thing. I guess that's why it's like Melbourne. There's always something going on somewhere…if you want to find it, or if it wants to find you really. There was always a jam night going on somewhere. Which is kinda different to an Open Mic. Because ppl just get up and play with you if they think they can. Sometimes it works….sometimes it doesn't. But when it worked; Oh my god magic. One night I played at Supermarket in Kensington, and had drums, bass, keys, harmonica all join me onstage for afew tunes. And it was perfect. I felt like I had a band with me, (which ive missed SO much) for 15mins everything was in sinc.
I meet an awesome up and coming band Ideas of August (well I think their on their way up!). And hopefully they'll be on their way downunder for a co-tour too next year.
I laid down some slide guitar for their- Feeling Alright track on their debut EP. We did some shows together over that time, where we'd swap between instruments and each others songs.
Its great to meet other musos that you're on the same page with that you can connect on life, and music as the common goal. It's what makes traveling worthwhile. And keeps me moving. But also make towns harder to leave.
I pretty much spent 3 weeks crashing on Dan's floor. Sleep by day, play by night. Good times….

After feeling fairly stationary in TO after a month, I decided I needed to move on.
For years I'd always wanted to get to Montreal, don't really know why. But I'm sure we've all got a place in our mind like it.
Once you're there people will ask you 'why on earth did you want to come here'?
But the only answer is, wait til you're somewhere else you wanted to be…
And, I'll be heading back don't worry. I'd like to spend a summer (Aus winter) there in 09. Brush up on a little French, and try and find some work for afew months, and play more gigs.
Again, tough city to create a vibe. But thru the magic of couchsurfing.com I managed to always have a roof over my head, and an outlet to hound about upcoming gigs.
Any downtime I had, I'd spend it riding around on borrowed bikes from friends, and meeting new people jamming in parks like Mont Royal or Le Fontaine…
I loved the culture there…always some type of Street Festival going on.
3 weeks just wasn't enough!

I headed back to TO for 5days to see Silverchair play, get my foot tattooed and play one last gig. Before playing in Buffalo last week, where I'd also booked my flight to San Jose…
This is probably the least interesting blog I could write, sorry if it's a bit stale.
I'm itching to get outside and start enjoying some ocean breeze and sunshine….And I went to a SWEET Reggae gig last night, and think I left ½ my brain at the venue. Only I SCruz is "420 Friendly" written on the tix. No need to budget for smoke machines on stage, when there's 100's of 'em stanking away infront.

Peace out my friends and foes( …if any? but hi and goodbye to you too anyways)
Keep the music spinning and ya cheeks a'grining.
Take it easy…

Wow.
Where do I start?
"…at the every beginning, and when you come to the end stop" -Alice in Wonderland
New York hey. City of dreams….and nightmares for others.
NY was pretty good to me, I must say. It took a while for us to get along, and work out all the bugs (SO glad to outta the awful hostel. A week was long enough…Altho I did find out from a local barista that the place is pretty much a crack house until few months ago…would help explain the offers of coke from the local dudes in the hallways that live there, amongst many which have lived there for years. For 120 bucks a week it's a cheap place to live with and expensive habit….and I'm not just talking about the money. NYC full of coke. (I don't care writing about it either I wont/don't touch the shit!!!) It's a drug for the EGO, that's it. "I feel shit, and I wanna feel better for an hr or two". So many people in a city with some much to offer in ther way of music, art, lifestyle and culture. Look for pleasure in the bottom of a fucking plastic 'baggie', stucking it up thru the thing their working so hard for- the $ bill. Needless to say I do enjoying watchin how the other side live, and never really got to know the 'dwellers in the corner of the party'. But it was apart of my time, and I guess a side I had to see)
NYC full of people looking to enjoy themselves and have a good time!! Any given night there's always some bar to go and play music at. So on the nights I didn't have any booked shows. I'd google an open mic night and go out and meet/make some new friends.
I think I'd have to spend about a month, or 3 to make a real dint in the music scene. It's SO big. Melbourne's got nothing on it =) I hear it would take like 15 years to visit every bar in NY cause there's so many, and they always change. But, honestly. My favorite place to place is the subways. Not busking….but on many'a late nights headin back out to Brooklyn area. I'd have my slide with me, and to kill some time between trains (usually 20-30 mins @ 3-4am) I'd sit down and play guitar. For just me, and the dozen or so people on either side of the platform. Not for money, nor reward. But just to pass some time and play some music while we wait to get home to or cold beds. I went to an open mic one Monday at the 'famous' SideWalk café. Where I played my 2 songs to a room full of musicans with a 'snice' reception. But afterwards on a train once I'd finished playing on the platform in the subway. This dude was like 'thankx for that, that was perfect' and brought a cd off me.
No…… "hey I got some cds if anyone wants any yadda yadda-crap". But just wanted one for that 15 mins of mostly instrumental jamming. …it made my night.
The gigs I played were really cool to do. But it's so hard to draw a big crowd as an independent in such a huge city….with SO much live music. So many shows, weren't very full, and played mostly to other bands pre or post crowds. But still they weren't out to see some hippy from Oz play his slide guitar and sing songs about their useless 'leader'. But some were….And those I'll cherish!!! There're just harder to find!

If I tried to write about all my adventures in NYC, I'd be here all night, really. 3 ½ weeks was just the right amount of time there this time. I could definitely spend some more time amongst that streets. But for now I'm happy to be gone.
I nearly didn't make it out! I jumped aboard my train to Buffalo this afternoon with about 1 minute to spare. As soon as I boarded the train pulled away, and a young boy in his seat looked at his watch and said '4 o'clock on the dot'.
So I figured I xtracted every last minute out of NY. And my heart grew heart, and sad as I pulled away.
But to all my NY friends I made, we'll meet again if we choose….and those that don't, safe adventures and vibes to you!!!

I'm safe and sound in Buffalo now =) Staying with Darren, the organizer of the Beat festival I'm playin at this weekend.
When I got off the train in Buff, I had to somehow make my way 10 k's to downtown to meet him at this bar. But there's no bus. Just a retired couple from Victoria, Australia who are staying 1 night so they can see the Falls tmrw, and looking to get to their hotel (whatta the odds hey) so we split a cab, and get dropped off to a warm welcome outside the Tudor lounge in Buffalo by Darren and co.

Good times have begun again, with more good people to meet.

See you all soon……
Peace, light, love and music.

Hey People...:

Just a quick one to let ya's know alls good. I've been hanging out in ..New York with Perth mate & singer/songwriter Matt Irvin.  Playing as much as i can over here, and the music's going down great.

It's a big city with a small town feel, sounds silly but it really is.  Most people i've meet aren't from NY at all. They've moved here from smaller rural towns looking for something more...guess thats what brought me here too.  So it's hard to find any 'real' New Yorkers.

I've been staying out in Williamsburg which is just near Brooklyn. At this old kinda rundown hostel...which isn't really a hostel. Because i think i'm about the only 'tourist' here.  The rate is prob the cheapest in the city, so many low income labours/workers-most men and quirkier members of society live there on a permanent basis.  Which is prob the reason for the massive population of bed bugs, and other nasty night crawlers that have been eating me in my sleep. I'm trying so hard to get outta there, but the universe is taking it's time in bringing me the goods.  8(  ....come on baby.

Thats what you get being a travelling muso, on a major budget in other city....

"all part of the experience i've been told"...     But i guess it inspires me to keep on keeping on with what i love to do, play my music to the people.  And maybe next time i'll be able to afford a place with cleaner linen (not that i use the linen, i brought a sleep bag over with me for times like theses)  But it's sure making me give every night everything I got.

After a gig on thursday night i was waiting for a train at Kosciuszko station making my way back to the hostel and i got talking to these two chicks who were off to catch up with some crew for birthday drinks by the East River.  I ended up tagging along with them and found myself, after a short stroll and afew fences later.  Sitting on the banks of the East River, just near Willliamsburg Bridge. Playing tunes, and having songs played to me by some local cats.  With the twinkling light of New York just across the water.  Man it was another cool night in the city that refuses to sleep.

Peace, light and music to you all.......

What was to be just one night crashing out on Jane's couch soon turned into 3.  I couldn't bring myself to leave the beauty of Tofino to soon.  The energy of the area sucked me in on the first night, and maybe cause it was 4/20 too…things just seemed to fit into place.  The green curry we'd planned to cook for Mike never happened. So Jane and I knocked up a killer-curry back at her joint. And then headed off on a short stroll to the beach after dinner for some star gazing thru the eyes of half a bottle of red wine & erb rolls.

We we're enticed by the flicker of some beach-fire flames further down the sand.  So we left our rocky perch, but by the time we got there the people had left (which meant, no "hey nice fire, can we mooch some of the warmth")..so we stoked it up with the remaining wood, kicked back and enjoyed the flames to ourselves.

Jane was keen to learn how to surf.  She scored a nanny position looking after a 5yo girl and a 2yo boy.  Right next to the ocean, and gets to live in a self-contained caravan just next to the house.  So if she didn't learnt to surf, she'd need her head checked- really badly =)

So on Saturday we hired some boards for the weekend. And heavy duty Wetsuits inclding; Hood, gloves, booties.  -Slight change to paddling out at Lennox Heads on Aus East Coast afew weeks ago in a pair of boardies.

But all went down a treat.  Jane stood up afew times (must have been the teacher) and I enjoyed just being out in the ocean catching afew waves on a longboard.

Jane had mentioned that day that one of her friends from Ontario might have been in Tofino 'somewhere'.  Turns out she was surfing right next to us, with her boyfriend…and a whole crew of ski patrol that had just finished the season up on Mt Washington. Now this crew took up the break, 12 longboards bouncing around in the whitewash…looked cool.

They were all a great bunch of people too. Mix of French, Yanks, Dutch, and ofcourse Aussies-wow that's what we sound like. haha

Ended up heading to this sweet beachside campground where all those guys were staying, and jammed out some crazy campfire tunes into the night.

We all caught up again the next day where we'd meet..the ocean.

Most of the crew from Mt Washington were heading off to a near by island, where the ski company hires out a resort for the staff, and they spend 3 days getting off chops, messy fun and creating mischief. (I wanted to go, but wasn't able 8(, prob a good thing tho)

So on the Monday morning, I packed my bag, said my goodbyes to the gorgeous Tofino and it's people whom made my journey.  And put my thumb to the air once again, to see who would take me to my next destination…Victoria.

Hey Cats, and Kittens

Just thought i'd let ya know that i'm safe and well-sound here in BC Canada.

I've just been having a bit of a holiday for the last week and a 1/2.  Spent my first few nites and days with some friends just outta Vancouver.

With so much time on my hands i'd just day trip down to Van, and do some people watching.  Not a bad city really, 'tis like Melbourne...but Oh so not like it either.

After 5 days, i had to get outta the big smoke.  So on the advice of a cool chick i meet on the airport bus into Vancouver.  I caught a 2hr ferry across to Duke Vancouver Is, heading to Tofino-'You'll love it' she said.  It's kinda like the BC version of Byron Bay.  Really laid back surf town with lotsa travellers/surfers and musos....my kinda place, and it was.

Trying to save as much coin as i can. I put my thumb to the air, and started hitching once i got off the ferry.  First ride took awhile, but made it to Nanaimo, then was picked up by a young couple travelling from Alberta-Oil Well Country....They feed me erb, let me crash on a fold out bed in a hut thingy they'd rented in Parkville, and gave me a taste of what it's like to be a bit hick  8)

Cause they were travelling, while on the 3hr drive out to Tofino, we'd stop and do afew tourist'y things which i wouldn't have seen hitch-hiking with most people. Worked out great. But, once we got to Info Center at the turn off to Tofino and Ucluelet.  I was in need of a change of scene.

Whilst playing with their 9wk old pup one of the rangers came out to pat the cute bundle of fluff....we yakked, and she offered to give me a ride to Ucluelet when she finished work in 45mins...i jumped on it.  Said my goodbyes to "Bonnie & Clyde" (as i like to called em) and their dog Jacob....

As promised Lindsay (ranger) drove me out to Ucluelet, which is a smaller, more non comercial surf town which i really wanted to see anyways. So again all good.

Lin's drove me through town, showing me this and that of what little there was in this sleepy town, and then parked outside her joint, and was like "ya wanna bring ya stuff in now or later"....'Ahhh  later'.  Was just planing to crach at a 'crappacker', but she offered me a bed on the living room floor...

She lived in a little beachside Condo with her partner Jordan.  And after dinner we went for a stroll round town, and saw an amazing sunset....the likes of which i haven't seen since travelling around WA.  Watching the sun set right into the ocean is just magic.

Lindsay gave me a lift back to the junction in the morning...and started thumbing my way to Tofino.  Wasn't long before i was picked up and after a 25min ride, was finally there....with little food, and no current place to stay either.

I muttered around town for afew few hours, and then went to suss out some backpackers 8(  It didn't feel right, and i didn't wanna stay at a bpkrs either. So i went back to this cafe to start reading my book, where after awhile i was distracted by a friendly conversation.  And then found myself being offered a vegie curry for tea...'how could i say no'

Tofino-TBC...............
