Lo is in the New York Times with Earsay.org. The article deals with a
class of nearly 20 immigrants I co-teach with Judith Sloan using
theater and hip hop to express struggle in performance...Another

PEACE WORLD HAPPY 2009!!
A new year...some people look at it as a clean slate or a new beginning. Some look at it as the inevitable...change. And yet others don't even acknowledge it as the official change in the year because it happens to be based on a Roman calendar system that is kind of bogus (look it up). Anyway, there is an energy of renewal in the cosmos. CHANGE is on everybody's lips. What form will it take? Who is going to bring it? Where will the resistance be? Will justice be served for the oppressed peoples of the world? I wish I could answer these for you with some certainty, but I can't. I'm good, but I'm not that good yet. There is one thing I'm certain of though: Hip Hop is undergoing an overhaul and the cliche', cookie cutter, industry standard bullsh!t won't cut it anymore.

If you pay close attention, cats that have been in the game for while and have traditionally stood on the side of commercializing the art (less Nas most of the time) are now flipping the script and aligning themselves with the essence of the art in preparation for the inevitable shift that is coming. Take Luda's new single "I Do it for Hip Hop," ft. Nas and Jay Z from his latest album Theater of the Mind. I first heard it on Funk Flex's radio show on Hot 97. In all honesty I was shocked and relieved. Those at the top of the game are lending their gifts to positivity and progress even if only for one song. The key is that it's coming at a critcal time in hip hop history and future.

I've been doing a lot of interviews lately and folks are asking me who I think should score album of the year for 2008. I don't have a record in mind that is really worthy of that title. (As a side not, I definitely think challenges should be made to MTV man of the year, but that's another story). There were some dope records, but that's a heck of a distinction that few are able to achieve. Many may disagree, but I come from an era of truly classic music. I hope things swing back that way because at this point we are a long way lost from that path. And I'm not one of those strict hardline hip hop purists who don't want the music to grow and progress. It's been struggling with itself and dealing with its demons for almost the last 15 years. I think the music has regressed to fit into a capitalist industry mould. We have to move it forward on another level. The money the industry produces is great, but we have to improve the music and the integrity of the culture.

With all that being said, I know there is a large lane opening for new voices. There are no more excuses. If you have a dope sound or message to get out through music, the time is now to grind. This game is 10% talent and 90% grind. Believe that. But don't sleep. It's time to work. And for those of you who are consumers of music, support, support, support. Together we can create and redefine the culture.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm going in this year. You should do the same in whatever you do. Check for the Ink Well mixtape dropping on Jan 22 on Amaza show.com. It's going to be something serious. Everyone I'm affiliated with has some crazy things in store for the world this year (Mo Betta Blues, Jah-Med, Damaja D, Toni Blackman, Lyrical Embassy, Amazashow.com, Jasiri X and the list goes on. Keep your eyes and ears open.

For your pleasure, I've imbeded Ludas's joint for you to check out if you haven't.

Peace,
Chen Lo

Peace World,
I hope this message finds you in good spirits and health. I've been Lo-Key, on grind and making moves. I'm trying to keep pace and ahead of the curve in regards to the changes our world is going through. I'm optimistic on multiple levels. A lot of you have been following my updates and career, while others are just being introduced to what I have going on. I want to assure all of you, new and old supporters alike, that I've got you on new material and content. Those recent MTV2 commercials were a real good look and exposed me to a lot of folks that are encountering me for the first time. I so appreciate the love and support coming from all corners of the globe. It's truly a blessing. I had a great time doing the spots and it seems like a lot of you enjoyed checking them.

Also, I'll be dropping a mixtape called "The Inkwell" that will be accompanied by a few videos and commercials. And yes, Chronicles is on its way. I couldn't just drop the album if it wasn't right. I may be coming to a city near you as well with my full band or DJ. We are getting it in right now. Nuff love to Liberation Family, Kid Primitive and Sid Da Kid for making these major moves with me. A lot of beautiful things are going on. The blessings are flowing and I'm doing my best to keep it moving. Please stay tuned and continue to do your part in making the world better. We all have a role and a purpose.

Keep Struggling and Keep Listening,
Chen Lo

Black President???/ The Bailout...Signs of the Times

Peace World,
It's kind of hard not to be consumed by the madness the media are portraying with the election and this "international economic crisis."

In regards to the election, it seems that many of America's staple values are beginning to show themselves at John McCain and Sarah Palin rallies. While some people claim to be shocked and surprised by some of this 'racist' behavior, it all makes perfect sense to me. America, a nation built on slave trading and labor, could potentially have its first black president; however, the racist attitudes that have historically been a part of the American cultural fabric are still in some pockets of the nation. Some of those attitudes have only changed shape. They exist nonetheless and the almost certain inevitability of a Black president is forcing the hate to rear it's head. As you've seen John and Sarah are allowing it to happen and this creating an even more dangerous climate in an already precarious society. I can't wait to see what's going to happen. It should be interesting. If you haven't checked "Black President" from Nas' most recent and controversial album, it's worth a listen (http://www.savefile.com/files/1594586). Nasir Jones is quite insightful on that one and much of the rest of the album. Check it when you can.

In addition, I'm not in panic mode, but I'm not really holding to much $ in the bank these days. It gives me piece of mind since the banks and stock market are in a tailspin and our tax dollars are being used to bailout billion dollar bad banking decisions. It's out of control. But I'm doing it old school with a shoe box or under a matress. That way, I can see it, touch it and use it when I have to. I'm a good teller when I need to be. Whatever you do, get it and keep it for now while it's still worth anything at all. Smart folks are getting their hands on Euros and exploiting the exchange rate. Just don't let the matrix swallow you. The independent, creative, entrepreneur spirit should thrive during this time. The money is only a tool...a means to an end.

'Bread, dough or cheese...money guap or G's...I'm on some get money and teaching these little seeds.'
"Gotta Get it"--Chen Lo
