After three years of bringing the sweet sounds of Swedish pop music to Glasgow, we are sad to announce that the club night will be no more, as founders Richard and Stacey are off to American pastures new. We're still not sure what the future may hold for SOS, whether we will continue to maintain the site as an information portal, do a few one-off DJ sets here and there, start a radio show, but for now we will be taking time off to concentrate on tumultuous life changes.

Thank you so much to all the fantastic people we've met through this wacky venture - artists and punters alike. You all have been fab, and made the whole crazy, costly venture worthwhile.

If you are an artist looking for gigs in Glasgow, I suggest checking out the following friendly promoters:

Nuts and Seeds
Dolly Mixture
Drive Carefully Records

And for bigger gigs, contact Mig at Nice n Sleazy.

For the rest, you can continue to get your Scando pop fixes by checking out the super excellent It's a Trap and Swedesplease blogs.

Thanks again, and so long!

OOOOOOOOOh we're SO EXCITED by a rash of rad gigs coming up this month! Wooo!

The legendary ROBYN will be appearing at The Arches on Friday. We caught her first ever Scottish gig at The Classic Grand a few months ago (or was it last year? hmmm...) and it was FAB so expect a great time if you do go!

soft

And just a few days later, Sunday, June 8, at King Tuts, the hotly-tipped hottie du jour, Lykke Li will be performing alongside the absolutely adorable sweet-voiced, soft-spoken El Perro Del Mar, who I've been dying to see live for AGES. I caught Lykke Li a few weeks ago at the Admiral, and can attest that she puts on a GREAT show, so you'd be a fool if you didn't rush out to get tickets to see both lovely ladies pronto! Speaking of which, i should really swing by Ticket Scotland on my way to work today...

Because the lovely ethereal Swedish darling of the moment, Lykke Li, is appearing at the Admiral. AMAZING! We're especially excited cos she was top of our list of artists to try to get over this year, and DF concerts have done the dirty work for us. So woo! :)

I've posted a few songs on the site, and if that doesn't convince you to come along, perhaps this effusive praise by the Guardian's Paul Lester will do the trick:

No 258: Lykke Li

Today, Paul Lester introduces a singer who does hushed and breathy, ethereal and distracted over lo-fi electronic melodies that sound at once perky and morose, upbeat and mournful

Hometown: Stockholm, Sweden.

The lineup: Lykke Zahrisson (vocals) plus a band when she plays live.

The background: It seems like only two days ago that we were in Stockholm, and after a one-day stopover in London we've gone back there. Because it's rife - RIFE, we tell you, it rhymes with life, strife and the Knife - with great bands. We're also making our second reference of the week to 80s cutie icon Clare Grogan, for some people the high priestess of helium-high warbles. Because Lykke Li (Chinese for "maybe"), a 21-year-old Swede born Lykke Zahrisson, is positively Groganesque (Scottish for "goddess-like"). While all around her are women singing soulful and deep, Li hiccups and squeaks, with such sweet sadness, like there's no tomorrow, about yesterday's regrets and today's sorrows. Not for her the raspy knowing bellow of the New Dustys; instead she does hushed and breathy, ethereal and distracted, more licklegurl lost than lovelorn lady, over lo-fi electronic melodies that sound at once perky and morose, upbeat and mournful.

Little Bit, her new single, is so instantly addictive it is already causing blog aggro about its dovetailing of the irritating and irresistible, the cute and, well, crap. It is also being talked about as this year's Young Folks by Peter Bjorn and John, that other pretty ditty that induced total devotion or homicidal loathing. Li is, in fact, produced by Bjorn Yttling of said trio, they're her top friends on her MySpace and she was the one singing the girl part on their big hit at their CMJ show last year. Little Bit, from the label that brought us Kate Nash and Late Of The Pier, could be an even bigger hit, but it's so perfectly formed and uncannily lovely it almost seems like a novelty, a bit Joe Le Taxi, as though it's an unrepeatable flukey one-off. Either way, Johnny Depp will love it, and love her.

Actually there is more, much more, to Li, who grew up on a mountaintop in Portugal with only her hippie parents and cassette of Madonna's Immaculate Collection for company, than Little Bit. Tracks such as I'm Good I'm Gone, Everybody But Me and Tonight suggest her forthcoming album Youth Novels will be a minor classic of budget, bedsit, neon-pink gloomdisco. Meanwhile, check out the adorably awkward dance moves in the video to the single, in which Li looks like a deflated Jordan or, as someone put it, "a less stabby Fiona Apple". Oh, and she plays at the Hoxton Bar & Grill Moshi Moshi night on January 31. Of course she does.

The buzz: "Lykke Li will be huge. Like, it's not even a question. She's a blog-birthed Kylie, or like Robyn only younger, hotter and better."

The truth: You'll be polarised by this poptronic sugar babe.

Most likely to: Appear in the Swedish remake of Gregory's Girl.

Least likely to: Go on a chicken-in-a-basket package tour of '00s Swedish bands in 2020.

File next to: Sally Shapiro, Annie, Peter Bjorn and John, Clare Grogan.

What to buy: Little Bit is released by Moshi Moshi Singles on February 18, with the debut album Youth Novels to follow in the spring.

... then get yeselves down to the Captain's Rest on Great Western Road on Friday for a gig featuring Peter Moren of Peter, Bjorn & John, and Tobias Froberg. Both are sweet, soulful singer-songwriters, with Tobias's record nominated for album of the year at the Swedish indie Grammies.

We're not hosting the gig, and it's a bit pricey - 7.50GBP - but would be a great way to ease yourself into the weekend in the intimate surroundings of... an old man's pub basement. :) And if we're lucky, maybe Peter'll treat us to a rendition of Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard like he did recently at SXSW.

No, it's actually not Scando twee, but rather 'Scandinavian conflict RnB', and it's coming to Glasgow! Club night Ballers Social Club will be presenting a special night of Swedish skwee at the Art School on Friday, featuring Liminous and Rigas DA. Exciting! I definitely recommend it, especially if you're up for something a wee bit different.

Here's the official Ballers blurb:

His remarkable production forms bass and squelchy acid with club drums and 8 bit rave,he will be joined by longtime friend and Skwee legend Rigas D A for a hour and half of groundbreaking live alternative club music.

Happy holidays everyone! Woo!
In honour of Christmas and all that fun stuff, I present you with a wee pressie - our favourite hunky Swedish crooner, Jens Lekman, kitted out in juletide cheer! I even stuck a bit of mistletoe up there for our lady friends ;)

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

And after you're all cheered out, help ring in the new year with a great gig at the end of January, featuring the super excellent Billie The Vision And Dancers, whose song Summercat has been one of poppy dance favourites since the debut of SOS! Check out our profile for more info and songs (including one with guest vocal by another fave, Hello Saferide!) and videos and all that fun jazz.

Until then, God Jul everyone!

...so proved the super excellent Sara Berg on Sunday! She was quite a diva. With quite an impressive set of pipes! Seriously great voice, and a great live experience. The grand ballroom at Sloans was a suitably atmospheric setting, too, with everyone seated at tables with tableclothes and candles, sipping the yummy free Kopparbergs cider, being very civilised. It was a great way to unwind from a busy weekend.

billy1

Plummeting Party - aka Billy of the Electroluvs also put in a pretty great performance, especially considering he took the stage alone - and he hadn't sung in public for nearly two years!  The set just got better and better, as he added more and more instruments and experimented with electronic beats. We can't wait to see what he's got in store for future performances - hopefully there'll be plenty more to come!

melnyk2

In between, I played a few new Swedish hits (see below) and then Melnyk took the decks for some proper DJing of some non Swedish hits :)

We also managed to raise a few quid for Oxjam, which is always a bonus! So thanks to everyone who dragged themselves down on a Sunday to join us and contribute to the cause! You're all stars!

And speaking of fabulous Swedish ladies, the incredible iconoclastic Queen of Swedish pop, Robyn, is finally coming to Glasgow - TONIGHT! So get down to the Classic Grand to experience the wonder of it all. Woo! We can't wait!

Hey folks! It's been AGES eh? Hope y'all are enjoying your respective summers! We've been maxin' and relaxin', preparing for a bustling autumn full of great music! So brace yourselves... all will be revealed VERY SOON!

In the meantime, why don't you come celebrate the waning days of summer with us at the Connect Festival at Inverary Castle this weekend? We'll be making an appearance with a DJ set at the Kopparbergs pear garden on Saturday, from around 7 - 8.30pm, I'm told. I have no idea who will be on the main stages at that point (it's SUCH A FAB LINEUP!), but hopefully it's not anyone too terribly exciting and you can sneak away for a nice cool cider and some chill Swedish beats.

Thanks to everyone who braved the crazy thunderstorms last Friday to attend our Midsommer party! It didn't feel much like summer outside, but we tried to brighten things up with two sunny performances and a few summer theme tunes.

Cammy and co from afterchristmas hotted it up with a little ironing board keyboard surfing and strip tease. Woo! And the lovely Swedish sisters Camilla and Maria of Raymond and Maria certainly shone as they led the Stockholm six-piece in some radiant jangly pop. Fantastic! They played an ace mixed set of songs in English and Swedish, including their smash summer hot from 2004, much to the delight of the crowd. The only regret was that we had to be out by 11pm to usher in club night Good Foot, so there was no time for an encore. Bah!

In between, I threw on a few records. Here's what you may have heard:
Runway to elsewhere - Pacific!
Summer love song - Nixon
Get nowhere - Peter Nilsson
The Chills - Peter, Bjorn and John
At night we die - Bjorn Kleinhenz
Summer in no-man's land - David and the Citizens
Seasons - Hari and Aino
Clever girls like clever boys - Pelle Carlberg
What I get for loving you - Tomas Magnusson
Say yes if you love me - Acid House Kings
Crackers - Maia Hirasawa
I'm sorry, he's mine - Miss Li
St Elmo's fire - Cloetta Paris

I really wanted to play My Darling YOU's Midsommer Party and Cruel Summer by Ace of Base, but alas, I ran out of time :(

We're taking a lil summer holiday, so will be away for July. But luckily there are too top Swedish acts at Indian Summer this year - I'm From Barcelona (the ultimate fun festival act) and Loney Dear - so we're not leaving you completely high and dry. Enjoy!

Last night we played a few records for our friends who assembled at Sleazys to come see the Swedish Polarbears (who looked very little like bears and sounded a very lot like a cross between Teenage Fanclub and Weezer) and local faves Skeleton Bob. Mom and dad - The Bear Quartet
Elevator Theme - Band in a box
The stuff - Lasse Lindh
Winter Light - Richard Reagh
When the sky - Ed Greene
Me and you - Anna Ternheim
At night we die - Bjorn Kleinhenz
What I get for loving you - Tomas Magnusson
It was 1982 - The Chrysler
Two in the morning - Tom Malmquist
I Wish - Elias and the Wizzkids
No good - Let's be honeys
I like to dance - Vit Pals
A song my love - Two times the trauma
Riverbank - Pelle Carlberg
A few good men - Loney, Dear
Jackson Heights - Herman Dune
Landslide - Isolation Years
Crackers - Maia Hirasawa
Vingslag - Kalle J
Maple Leaves - Jens Lekman
Cadillac - Hep Stars
