CD review: Carl Verheyen Band - Trading 8s
PDFPrintE-mail
By Ken Volpe - GJD

Every once in a while an artist has an opportunity and a privilege to work with many of his peers on a project.  Such is the case on the latest release from the Carl Verheyen Band, Trading 8s.  One could only imagine the joy and creative fun that Carl must have had in making this CD.  Actually in the linear notes Carl states, “I sincerely hope you enjoy this music as much as we did making it.”

I’ve gotten to know Carl over the past couple of years through his audio interviews and columns with GuitarJamDaily.com.  I have always been blessed by his music and who he is as a human being.  So when Carl told me that he was working on a new project I was really excited about the news.

The CD starts out with a track named, Highway 27. This features Carl and Joe Bonamassa playing intricate melody lines and trading runs with the utmost fury.  Both of these guys possess sweet liquid guitar tones.  The song kind of reminded me of a Jeff Beck meets Steve Morse type thing.  It’s kind of funny because Steve Morse happens to appear on this project as well, playing on a tune entitled, On Our Way.  This track can best be described as a beautiful bluesy ballad with some rich musical textures. I really dug the Steve Morse signature modal pattern runs.

Another tune that caught my ear is a Carl’s version of the old Beatles song TaxMan. The arrangement and production are exceptional on this one.  There is an interesting contrast of styles between Carl and Fusion master Scott Henderson.  This track contains some of my favorite intense guitar ripping from Carl.  A little further along is the cut, New Year’s Day.  This one has a great groove with tasteful ideas from Mr. Verheyen and Blues tone wizard Robben Ford.  There is some serious tone flying out of the speakers from both of these guys. Ford fans will really love this one because it has some hints from his old school playing.  Also on the CD is a track named, Country Girl.  This song contains great vocals by Carl and a really tight rhythm section. The infamous Albert Lee injects his tone and fast country-style runs in a way that only he could do.

There are a few other tunes on Trading 8s that do not feature any of the guest artists. So, Carl and his band including, Dave Marotta on bass, and Walfredo Reyes Jr. on drums are really showcased.  Actually, from a compositional standpoint and for overall production value these tunes were my favorites, especially Eastern Steppes.

Trading 8s is a wonderful CD that will appeal to many different guitar fans. Carl’s ability to craft songs and adapt his playing with these many artists is most astounding. Do yourself a favor...if you love great guitar playing go buy this CD.

Guitarist Tweaking on the Road

TWEAKING ON THE ROAD by Carl Verheyen

My band tours a lot, so the need for rehearsing doesn't arise too much. We can usually straighten things out at a sound check or talk down arrangements and work through problems on the tour bus. Sometimes we'll have one "refresher" rehearsal in town before hitting the road, but we're not a huge production requiring weeks of full rehearsals with sound and lights.  Earlier this month we hit the road to promote my new CDTake One Step.

The only downfall with keeping a crack commando team in shape like this is the gear. In the case of a European tour, I keep the bulk of my touring gear over there so I have very little to bring on the flight. This has become more and more important as various terrorist boneheads keep messing it up for all of us working people that need to travel with their at least a few of their tools.  In the past 9 years I've seen weight restrictions get lower, carry on luggage get nixed and overweight fines get higher. On my current tour I was allowed just one carry on and it had to be my guitar, so my lap top needed to be checked which is always risky (and not even recommended by the airlines).

Upon arrival in Europe we usually spend the first day resting. But the very next day is often the first show and the unpacking, setup and checking of the gear usually makes for a very long sound check.  Before you know it you're onstage wondering why there's no high end from the left 4X12 cabinet and the reverb is buzzing on one of the clean amps.  The next day you're off to another town, setting up on another stage and before you know it you're counting off the first tune.  Although I report everything to my tech, problems seem to build up and nothing gets fixed without a little down time.

Two days ago we drove from Zurich, Switzerland to a small town near Bonn, Germany.  The band had a day off and we were happy to find out that the venue and the hotel were one in the same: a beautiful castle called Schloss Gymnich.  After a nice dinner at the castle we were shown the venue for tomorrow nights concert. It was a "great hall" in the castle, especially designed all those years ago for music and acoustically excellent.

The next morning after breakfast I awoke to the peaceful countryside sounds of birds and distant church bells.  With no travel scheduled and no errands to run in town I could look forward to the entire day at the castle. I knew what I had to do and looked forward to it......

I instructed the road manager to unload all the guitar gear from the truck. I opened all my cases and went through every cable in the various snakes and checked out all the amps individually. We replaced tubes and tweaked the knobs until each amp sounded great, then turned our attention to the guitars. When I finally hooked everything back together the rig sounded like I remembered from the last tour, full and warm. The buzzes were gone and the tone was inspiring, and I didn't need to rent a rehearsal studio to ring it all out.  The show was one of the more memorable ones in recent years, and the comfort factor of staying upstairs from the concert hall made it feel like a mini vacation!

What I've learned is this: Sound check is really no place to do this type of work. Sound check is for getting the drums to sound right at the front of house and getting monitors together. It's for balancing the band and making it comfortable on stage to perform the music. I can't reasonably ask my band to forgo that important part of the gig so I can tweak my gear.  From now on I'm going to insist my promoter schedules a day off in the first week of the tour with all day access to the next venue for this very reason.  It doesn't necessarily need to be a castle, but it sure was nice!

“Remember the Alamo”

Well, well... What is this ??? Oh yeah, it’s Carl Verheyen’s NEW CD ‘Trading 8’s’... Man, I’ve been waiting for this CD to arrive in the mail w/ much eagerness... My anticipation has been building for a short while now, and here it is in my hands. My ears have been watering for some time now to hear Mr. Verheyen’s tantalizing tones, catchy rhythmic riffs, and tasty licks. And, since radio has forgotten what REAL music is, “this CD is a real treat”. As w/ Carl’s earlier outings, I know that I will be getting a quality production w/ great music on it every time.

First off, Carl’s recording style is just phenomenal. The tones he gets from his Strat are straight off truly amazing. The quality in the recordings are instantly evident w/ it’s overall warmness and captured sounds of today and yesterday. Of course creating these off beat, but catchy rhythmic hooks, advante’ arrangements, sonic atmospheres must come from years of playing with great Bands and Artists such as; SuperTramp, the BeeGees, John Fogerty, Christina Aguilera, Melissa Manchester, Miley Cyrrus, Leanne Rimes, and Glenn Frey from the Eagles. He has played on the Tonight Show with country music artists Tom Wopat and Shelby Lynn, and recorded a movie soundtrack with Dolly Parton and a few records with Cher. I think that qualifies him for the word “quality”.

I have been listening to the CD for several weeks now and I’m still enjoying it more and more w/ each listen. My best friend / childhood cousin came to town last week for a few days of stay here in the Music Capital of the World Austin Texas for some business. Being from New York, he wanted to go down to San Antonio to see the infamous Alamo and to check out S.A.’s well-known Riverwalk. So we chose a beautiful early evening to drive down to San Antonio from Austin (90 minutes max). The mid-spring weather was just perfect. My wife, cousin and I found ourselves crusin’ down Texas Highway IH-35 south listening to this wonderfully arranged CD ‘Trading 8’s. This CD is definitely perfect for short road trips. Carl’s music opens up like a highway to musical bliss. And yes, the music hits you in a different fashion when crusin’ 75 mph down the highway on pristine late afternoon watching the country side rollin’ by while spring flowers bloom along the highway’s edge, and all the while the bright red-sun gets bigger as it makes it slow descent into the Tejas hill country.

There are several songs on this fine compilation that are very reflective and others that are just fun like Carl’s version of the Beatles ‘Tax Man’. If you are into folks like Tom Scott, Larry Carlton, Little River Band, Little Feat, Steely Dan, Acoustic Alchemy, Brad Paisley, and Eric Johnson, then Carl Verheyen is your man for your next musical adventure.

As you read this review, you will notice that I will not sit here and breakdown each song like a ball game because this CD isn’t for breakin’ down or to be analyzed like that or in that fashion. This CD is being reviewed as a passive listener. This Album is just for pure listening and losing yourself in the muse ! Just fa-getta-bout-it, listen and drive.

However, you will find pop, rock, blues, fusionistic and jazzy compositions with flawless guitar playing of course. The guests on this album are each impeccable musicians in their own right. Let’s see... You have guest guitar solos by Joe Bonamassa, Steve Morse, Robben Ford, Albert Lee, Rick Vito, and Scott Henderson. Now c’mon, how can you go wrong w/ this line up ?

On the well thought out CD cover you have Carl sitting on a wooded stool playing his guitar. And in the foreground, you have another stool with a gold top Gibson Les Paul laying across it by itself with no player. Almost as if Carl Verheyen was inviting you to pick up the guitar and “Cut Some Heads” with him as they say in the blues business. As the Cd suggests: Trading 8’s – The art of alternating or trading eight bar phrases “TRADING 8’s” with another soloist while improvising. And once again, the Album design is inviting and warm too.

My highlights on this CD are “Taxman”, On our way, Higher Ground, New Year’s Day and Country Girl. I’m a sucker for pop songs and blues. However, I really dig all the tunes and my flavors change each time I listen to it. That’s just kind of how this album has grown on me. To round everything out, The results are an exciting, high energy blend of styles and tones complimented by the unique rhythm section of Dave Marotta and Walfredo Reyes, Jr.

If you are a guitar aficionado or just love to listen to new and electrifying music that puts chills up your spine and into the back of your mind, then this album is for you !!!

I give this CD 5 Starz across the board and recommend it for mass consumption !!!
