Current mood: cold
Howdy everyone from the gay bay! A few days ago, we embarked on our last shoot of the film project! Our agenda: interview Ryka Aoki in LA, Trannysaurus Sex in SF and Adhamh Roland in Berkeley. Right now, we're 2/3rds done, sitting in the welcoming, loving, Fairview house, cozying up to space heaters galore. Thanks winter!
We landed in LA on Saturday and we welcomed quite heartily by a friend-of-a-friend, Abby, of the band FearMia (myspace.com/fearmia). Within 10 minutes of us dropping our shit all over her house, we were playing music together - Abby on banjo, simon on A's uke, and Madsen on this weird electric bass with rubber strings. She took us on a tour of her favorite music shop and local cafe, sat us down with seasons of The Family Guy on DVD, gave us the keys, and left the house to us. Big bed and all!
Sunday was sleeping in, breakfast at the cafe, then the adventures of Simon and Madsen on LA public transit! We actually figured it out somehow, and although it took us 2 hours to do a 45 minute commute, we felt proud that we actually made it to Ryka's only 15 minutes late.
Ryka (http://www.myspace.com/rykaaokidelacruz) gave us an incredible interview and played us some of her new collaboration music and jammed on the harmonica. She gave us home-grown apples for our trip home, and we managed to get back on the bus quite easily.
Our rideshare showed up in the midst of a huge rainstorm at 6 am on Monday, and we were whisked (way too fast for our liking - like 90 mph) to the bay and dropped off at the doorstep of the Fairview house, home to Adhamh and other lovelies.
Yesterday was our interview with Trannysaurus Sex. We were helped out so so much by Syd and Lex from SF on lighting and sound. The band wowed us with their smarts and sexiness as well as hilarious stories about their antics and outfits on stage. We ate pizza. All was good.
And tonight is a surprise little gig for us at a puppet show down the block - it'll be good to throw some tunes together for a new audience. Maybe they'll buy cds!!
Tomorrow we interview Adhamh, and Thursday its back home.
We'll see you then homos! xo aS/M

Dear so and so,
Here is a little memo, keeping you "abreast" or the past few months of actor slash model life...
What's Happening!!@?
In the past few months actor slash model has been on a mini hiatus, taking time off stage to write new songs, log hours of footage from our East coast tour, and putting all our ducks in a row in preparation for next summer/fall's film premiere.
The still untitled (who's got ideas?? throw 'em this way!), feature length documentary that we've been working on for the past two years is now officially OUT of the production phase!! We are into post. This includes logging and importing the 80+ hours of footage from the past 2 years, and producing several different trailer cuts, before finishing the feature.
In other actor slash model news, we were recently offered a donation of services from Riot Grrrl, Ink. , supporters of incredible projects like Sister Spit, the Tranny Road Show, and John Cameron Mitchell's SHORTBUS. This gives us lots of fabulous perks that will help us release a higher quality film on a national scale!!!
When can you see/hear us out and about again?
Thursday November 13, 2008 @ Dyke Mic, DUDES WHO DIG DYKES! Tweet/Big Chicks, 5024 N. Sheridan, (argyle red line) with Scott Free, Adam Hart, Kurt Heinzt
Stay tuned for an upcoming fundraiser/blow out party for Simon's 30th' birthday party in late November!!!
we love you. aS/M

So maybe no one reads this blog. Maybe everyone who does already knows about Threat Level: An Evening of Queer Shorts. Maybe all of you who know what I'm talking about are already Threat Level's "friends" and this is all for naught. But, if there's just ONE HOMO FILMMAKER OUT THERE who reads this and doesn't already know that they should be submitting their short film work to Threat Level RIGHT NOW, and gets up and starts rolling, I can die happy.
So people. Threat Level is a bi-monthly film series curated by us two faggits at Actor Slash Model and these two other queers by the names of Jules Rosskam and Sam Feder. Since we're all making films that are paid for by the generosity of our communities, we thought we'd give a little back. We put on a night of queer short films, and you, friendly audience members, give us some money. We also get you drunk on sangria.
Now. Threat Level is going to be a whole year old in January, and below is the call for submissions. Check it.
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS!!! Threat Level; an evening of queer shorts – One Year Anniversary
We know, we can hardly believe it ourselves, but our one-year anniversary is right around the corner! Since it is a special time for Threat Level, we are working on a very special program. Remember growing up and watching all those teen romances, where the girl always get the boy, but never the girl you know she not-so-secretly desires? Well, we've had it with reading-between-the-lines, not to mention creating an entirely different plot just to get our rocks off.
Threat Level presents: Queer Teen Romance. We are challenging all of you to make the best/worst short queer teen romance you always new you wanted to, but never had the right forum. Think camp, satire, drama, animation, experimental: just make sure it's queer, teen, and romance! Even if you've never picked up a camera before, now is the perfect time. Get some under-aged looking queers, a camera, come glitter and make sweet movie-love!
Videos/films should not exceed 20 minutes, can be any genre, and shot with anything you can get your hands on. Submissions must be received by no later than January 9th, 2009. This is an arrival date, not a post-mark date.
Send all submissions to:
"Threat Level" c/o Feder/Rosskam 1265 W. Early Ave 2 Chicago, IL. 60660
Please send only NTSC, DVD's. *Be sure to include*: a one sentence description of the work and contact info for the filmmaker (including email, phone, and address).
Threat Level Queer Shorts is a bi-monthly film and video screening series organized and curated by Sam Feder, Madsen Minax, Jules Rosskam and Simon Strikeback to screen works made by or featuring queer-faggot-dyke-homo-tranny-inbetween-the-liners-freaks! This event is put on to support the filmmaking duos of Feder/Rosskam and Minax/Strikeback as they raise funds and awareness for their current documentary film projects, respectively exploring trans feminism and gender identity in music performance. Current mood: adventurous
t's been a while and i apologize. feels like we haven't had a spare minute since i left you last from baltimore. right now i'm sitting in the sweltering heat of boston, a few hours before our show here at the Midway Cafe, right before the weekly queer-ioke night.
let me recap...
philly. ah philly was a blast, for all of us involved. we stayed at the lovely home of dear friends, called the Chub Institute (named for it's roots of fat-positive queer feminist hotness) where we were treated oh so well. we played a great show with dave end where many idapalooza attendees graced us with their applause and sexy costuming. afterwards there was much revelry, or maybe just a lot of drinking and smoking pot. which pretty much caps off many of our nights here on tour. in philly we ate vegan hoagies, drank yingling beer and were welcomed by brilliant hot throngs of queers. madsen and i wrote a song each. malic and nern went on adventures with folks they had met at ida. good times were had by all. (especially by xena marie who was the best maker outer ever)
it took us 5 hours to drive to NYC through getting a little lost in jersey and NYC traffic. we landed at our 1/2 furnished sublet supplied by jessi's friend carrie in south brooklyn at 9pm, and by 10 we were in manhatten at the door of Lustre, the newest solstice tranny cabaret hosted by Justin Bond. NYC kicked our asses and we kicked it right back. we played a fucking amazing show with the genius line up of Glenn Marla, the World Famous Bob, Dave End, and the Shondes. (thanks to dave for putting that show together!!) however, we also neglected to eat enough and spent a lot of money on cab rides. money evaporates in that town i swear. but we certainly lived it up in a truly glamorous way, with madsen and i staying up until 7:30 am and waking up at 8:30 to do our interview with the Shondes. (simon got wicked laid, i tried, but as per usual, it didn't quite work) luckily to us, the shondes laid us out a breakfast spread you wouldn't believe and gave a great interview to boot. the next day we interviewed Geo from Novice Theory who gave us incredible insight into the world of NYC and being raised there. that night he played a fantastic show that we were able to video, while i (simon) went back to philly for another night of hanging out and catching up with old friends.
coney island was our good-bye to NYC, and we desperately hope that it is not the last time we ever see that magical boardwalk as it stands now. there is a big fight to save coney island from disney-esque development. i encourage you all to learn more! (nern took me and simon's picture while we were sitting in a trash can. my butt then got stuck in the trash can, and we had to tip it over to pry my ass out)
then finally to boston - we are being so well taken care of here in elizabeth's house. we walked in at midnight to a pullout bed and a sheet of chocolate chip cookie cake. enough said. yesterday we interviewed Systyract, a trio of trans and genderqueer folks that dress up like nuns and sing covers of songs with the words god, devil, faith, prayer, etc. on acoustic guitar and cowbell. it's fucking genius. they're opening for us, and then will close the show leading the audience in a rowdy chorus of S&M cowboy. (the systyrs are currently raising funds for the "lopemofteme" and "adadicktame" funds - at this point we could not hold back our tears behind the cameras.)
look out world.
tomorrow we go to portland maine for a day off at dave's parents' house 15 minutes outside of town, which, i believe, is also on the ocean. it's gonna be beautiful.
i miss you all so much, and the wonderful world that is chicago summer. (i miss my girlfriend. wahh) kisses simon (and madsen) aS/M
oh and here's a list of all the people/bands we've played with and interviewed. you can find them all via our myspace. you can also see pictures of our tour at www.myspace.com/actorslashmodelmusic

Current mood:sinus-y
well hello friends. i'm chillin in the house of our lovely hosts, Baltimore's all grrrl rock band The Degenerettes. they are quite fabulous and currently at work. malic, nern and madsen are touring around the John Waters sites including Divine's grave and 10,000 Liquors where the magic lottery ticket was bought in Desperate Living.
i, however, am catching up on some much-craved alone time, reading up on some late-victorian theories of friendship and resistance, and taking advantage of the wireless to write emails and play internet scrabble.
we rolled into DC about 4am on the 22nd into the lovely home of malic's friend Hillary, complete with beds for all of us! after much sleeping in, we loaded up for our first gig of tour, DC's dyke bar Phase One (otherwise known as "The Phase"). dave end and the incredible Polka Dot Dot Dots met up with us there and there was much love all around. a lot of the "what a small queer world it is" as they know many of our friends in olympia. the pizza was good, the show was great, and the sneaking off to smoke pot in the car was hilarious.
the next day, we interviewed Jessica Xavier, a musician who has been working political on trans issues and singing about it since the early 90's. we learned a lot of trans feminist/lesbian history from her and saw some incredible footage on VHS, including when she performed at Camp Trans 2004. she also made us excellent BBQ in her beautiful backyard. a good night for sure. we tromped back to hillary's house and watched WAY too many episodes of Rosanne on DVD. amazing.
then, off to baltimore. we got in yesterday afternoon, was fed an incredible taco dinner, and then treated to a Degenerettes practice before their interview. tonight is our show with them, along with a ukulele player that goes by G. Willikers and a marionette show featuring puppets of the band alongside their live music! and it all takes place in an artist warehouse space, so it should be incredible.
tomorrow we leave for philly- we're excited to stay at the esteemed Chub Institute and play at The Power House! ah west philly queer house names. gotta love 'em.
ok more soon loveyou simon aS/M

Current mood: dirty
Hello again dear readers, we write you from the depths of... somewhere in idaho. the last few days have been a whirlwind of shows, interviews, hangouts, gear toting, people meeting, insanity.
eugene was fucked. no comments.
we rolled into portland at 1am, special thanks to mapquests inability to function in gridless cities. arrrggg. we made a home for 2 days upon the floor cushions of the infamous Betka Schpitz. the next day was crazy, we did two interviews during the day, then played a show that night. we met up with Basic Fix bright and early for an awesome interview. they even had breakfast treats for us! sweeties. kelly moe, amazing gendervariant artist, composer and performer, along with bassist and performer mylie the two make up basic fix, a homoqueer tranny electro pop performance riot. LOVED 'em. we then headed deeper into the city to meet up with May, a transwoman singer. we shot the interveiw in an "abandoned" apartment building and touched on the presence of transpeople within the vagabond traveler music world.
then we sped down the hill to the someday lounge to primp our pretty pirate asses for busting up a stage. we got to share a bill with riotfolker Brenna Sahatjian. :-) that place was fucking swanky! they had a dressing room, with one of those little pull out mirror things, and free beer. sweet. for dirty, broke, wayward traveling boys we were happy. the show was lovely, the pay was shit.
we sped up the 5 bright and early toward Olympia for our next show the following night. we got a little lost on, what are those things called again, roundabouts?? but made it to the safety of jack and luke's front porch. how fucking flowers and yards and space in the pacific northwest make me wonder what the hell i'm still doing in chicago. sigh. the happy beast house threw us a LOVELY soiree, complete with stellar bbq, uncomparable hospitatily, and all the stinky tranarchy DIYs we could feast our eyes on! we played with the Blackberry bushes and the Pasties, which was collectively one of our favorite line-ups on the trip. both bands were outstanding.
as the night continued we hoped on the chicago reunion bandwagon, as we hung on the porch with x chicagoans, incluing the likes of brittany, erin, sarah adorable, jack, and us! good times.
madsen hauled ass on outta there with Sarah the next morning, as he was chomping at the bit to make eyes (more like carry things) with his unrequited crush of the universe. simon and malic took their time in Oly, making it to Seattle the next day.
We unloaded into the deep dark basement of Miss Indigo Blue, Seattle homeowner, and infamous titty twirler. we took the afternoon to debfrief a bit, meet our cohort, moorea malatt aka the naked folksinger, and madsen and malic took in a novice titty show, before rendezvousing at the rendezvous theater. asm, moorea, piper, cindy and sarah all huddled around a little table as we passed cindy's fancy pants psuedowatchthing back and forth to view a small video of S. ingesting a tampon. used. it was fascinating. (this video is currently available on UTube)
we made our way backstage to deal with a freaked out organzier, a not funny comedian, and an audience consisting of... no one. free beer made it all ok. we went home. and why the fuck is everyone having sex but me??!!! arg. (mm)
we did a wonderful inteview with singer/songwriter Piper the next day. He had great things to say about how his identiity relates to his performance, and how being no-ho functions within his life. smart kid. then the crew parted ways as simon spent time with local mates and madsen and malic met up with one of our gracious hosts at a killer fucking cabaret show in downtown seattle, featuring fucsia foxxx, who we would see more of later... madsen bought the album. we all joined forces to spend all of our money at a local pub, and go home significantly drunk. then, took the party home.
off to cross the country. Seattle to Minneapolis. Juli made us the most amazing breakfast ever. it was so good, i don't think we can actually talk about. it may just diminish the effect. belly's engorged, we stuffed our shit into our packs, loaded the truck for the long trip east.
the pac no west was good to us. we met people in places we wished we could have stayed longer, forming new relationships, exploring pre-existing relationships, and most likely missing opportunities here and there. next time. we'll catch you on the flip side, darlings...
aS/M.
ps- pix from this section of the trip are up! under the photo album called WCT 07-part 3. xo

Current mood: exhausted
holy shit. so much has happened in the last 4 days.
we're in san francisco now, where we've been since thursday night, but it feels like it's been weeks. the intense connectivity we've had people has been invaluable, and perhaps not totally articulatable. (is that a word?)
we arrived at sam and alan's place on thursday night and neo came over! we sorted out our shit and settled in a bit. malic met up with marcus, madsen hung with neo, and simon took in a killer burlesque show featuring Alotta Boute, and a lotta booty. our one night off.
the next day (show day! friday 5/25) was nonstop. madsen spent 6 hours in a clinic trying to rid himself of the unforgiving excema that had been plauging him since st louis. then we headed straight over to theater rhinoceros to sort things out for the night. we shot double video cameras, 16mm, super 8 and stills. it's was complete cacophony.
it was surreal finally meeting the people i'd been in contact with - negotiating, planning, discussing, etc. for the past six months. it seemed there was nothing to say. and everything to say. seeing the performances i'd been waiting to see for months was so fucking utterly fulfilling. turnout was low, but the footage will speak for it.
the night cascaded into somewhat of a disaster, as anderson's car was first broken into, then side swiped, with him in it, after his bag of dicks had been conveniently nicked and his whitey tighties strewn amok by some douche bag!! we wheeled his busted up wagon back to our place... interviewed him the next day. talked about the amazing history and transformation of his work throuhout the past three decades and got some gorgeous rooftop shots.
the next day was our show at the stork club in oakland. totally fucking dive, but we had a great time. super responsive crowd, free beer, and duct taped streamers. what more could we want?
asm was up bright n early sunday morning and off to Sarafina's house to talk to (1/2 of) a predominent aspect of the doco, Lipstick Conspiracy. these women had some extraordinary, absorbing, eloquent, inspiring and sort of overwhelmingly articulate shit to say. (sorry, i'm crass. it's 2 in the morning for christ sake.) beatiful discourse with Sarafina and Shawna. and hey, Sara's partner Andrea made us the most delicious bloody mary's known to (wo)man! needless to say, our day was destined to be grand. post interview we shot some 16mm outside and leisured momentarily with our new comrades.
so much has happend, it feels silly to try to rehash it all. i'm feeling kind of sad to leave. the bay area stop of this trip was always planned to be a huge portion of the project. we were prepping for months as to how we would shoot 4 performances at 2 different shows, and conduct three dominant interviews in four days (remember, we're using 4 cameras, there are three of us, and two of us are performing half the time. do some math on that one. :-) that time has come and gone. i'm sighing in anticpating the sense of longing i will feel as we cross the bay bridge and depart this cornecopia of queerness on a distant, mountainous isolated peninsula, but can also appreciate the first of many types of closure that we will experience on this journey.
madsen minax signing off, for actor slash model.
oh yeah, the PART 2 photo album is up under the pix pages. lots of pictures from the SF and Oakland shows, Lipsticks, Anderson, new friends and fans, old friends and fans, fun in the bay, and us (as usual).
ah shit, i forgot to talk about the LA show. so here's a quick recap, it was awesome to see peter and xenia and daniel, and play at tribal, but LA wasn't so into us. actually they were like "what the hell are you." luckily we did a killer interview with transwomen Lauren and Rycca to make up for the fact that LA was "huh?"

Current mood: chipper
holy bejezus, writing from sunny Los Angeles, California where oranges are dropping off the trees in Vanessa'a back yard as we type!
welp, we've played two shows and driven 2200 miles since saturday may 19th. so basically we're haulin some ass. no one has tried to pull any practical jokes on madsen yet, or forced him to eat beets, so he's in wonderful headspace. no flat tires (although we did almost sort of run out of gas somewhere between oklahoma city and santa fe... no freakin' exits!), no drama, great shows, and lots of dirty looks!! ;-)
our first show was in st louis, at mokabee's with our good ole friend adhamh. i love playing with adhamh cuz we all know many of each others' songs, so there's lots of room for improv and the general "jam." we had a fantastic time, and everybody was so incredibley supportive. they gave us all they could, and filled our "gas tank" (we use a gas tank for tips), bought cds, and some undies. yay. we slept at kuessner's for the night. amazing hospitality, she even have us a bag full a food when we left. we went over to the community arts and media project (CAMP) house, where adhamh lives and works, for breakfast. he made us some stellar pancakes, and gave us a tour of the CAMP house, then we quickly hit the road for the 16 hour drive to Santa Fe!
we drove about 9 hours the first day, and camped somewhere west of oklahoma city. it was soooo chill. malic set up a shelter while simon made food on his little porta stove, and madsen did "other" important things. we ate like... broke musicians camping on the road!!! beans, greens n rice. so delish. out of little metal dishes too. madsen felt so butch. he even had to undo one of malic's not so boyscout knots with his knife. (malic is loved).
we hit the road at 6am, straight shot to santa fe. this is the part where madsen almost made us run out of gas... made it to santa fe in the afternoon and rolled up to dusty's place. she greeted us with homemade lemonade and a shaded back porch. after shaking the road coma, we headed to the aztec cafe to do some computer/venue work, eat delicious food, and meet rosie and mattie, who we'd be staying with. lucky for us malic used to live in santa fe, so we we're easily welcomed by kind and hospitible people. we played a show at backroads pizza that night. holy crap, the pizza was amazing, and piper gave us all the free pizza and beer we could devour! we we're really suprised at the turnout. it seemed like the queers flocked, and like in st louis, they we're all VERY generous. they filled our gas tank and bought up some goodies and we're super down to earth and easy to talk to. we also met mekah gordon, a transwoman musician who sat in on an improv jam with us during the set, and plays some mean harps! we hope to feature some of mekah's work in the doco (though we were very short on time in santa fe) and hey, she's running for senate in 08, go mekah!
we we're up bright and early to pick up the trailer from dusty's, load the trailer and leave santa fe in a whirlwind of dust and desire. (madsen unfortunately was not able to live out his santa fe fantasies due to time restraint...) we filled our coffee mugs and prepped for the 13 hour drive ahead of us... LOS ANGELES.
now we're having a semi-relaxing day in catching up on work and sleep before tonights show at tribal cafe in LA. we've got some amazing footage hence forth, especially location footage of the southwest. madsen is giddy like a school boy cradling the bolex in his hands again for the first time in 4 years, imagining that 16mm flim cascading rapidly upon it's spindle... squirt.
we're stoked about our show tonight. great lineup, thanks to peter morgan of laco$te.
all in all things are great so far. though we are dissapointed we didn't get to take ole trAsh's van, we are quickly realizing it was for the better. (we were supposed to take a 1971 dodge van (with a bed) on tour, but had some reliabliity issues just days before departure, so now we're driving an suv pulling a circus trailer behind). driving through those mountains both yesterday and the day before. shit. i don't think we would have made it to LA from santa fe in one day with the van. till Ida van!
we'll give ya'll some more updates as we get more time in the next few days. there's gonna be pix from this first portion of the tour up momentarily under the photo album "WCT-07 Part 1" so check 'em out.
