Six Free Songs: Wine-sour or crawfish-fresh?
Posted: September 02, 2008, 6:13 PM by Rebecca Tucker

The internet can be a scary place if you don’t know what you’re looking for. Every month, Sean Michaels of the music website Said the Gramophone offers an annotated guide to the music you ought to be downloading. Bonus: It’s all legal!

...The Consonant C  Ghost  The Consonant C are Calgarians of a different sort. Imagine them stranded on a beach with Chad VanGaalen — VanGaalen grabbing at crawfish while the Consonant C collect sea glass. Which is to say that they make their focus the pretty things, the gleaming things, lulling lullabies and lovely love songs. And yet — thank goodness — Ghost is not too nice. It’s a song still rightly haunted, filled with creaks, drones and the singer’s stray syllables. A summer beach with an autumn wind. (Capes and Crowns is out now.)

we just played the calgary folk fest, and it was so lovely. crazy weather, crazy parties, and crazy love. we are really happy.

this week we are recording a four song 7" with Grant Howarth, who recorded our last album. That will be released probably in the new year. We've also been thinking about our next album, we'll probably start working on that this fall.

the next month we're taking off, we've worked so hard. When we come back, we might work on some collaborative projects with other local artists, we're pretty excited about those possibilities. next to do item: learning how to write grants. we need to get on that.

other than that, thanks so much to everyone who's been supportive! we are really lucky to be a part of such a generous and genuine community. we mean it.

Clea lost her wallet the night before and luckily found it that morning, in her backpack. It would have been fun trying to pay for gas with the group account or her driving, let alone problems at the border. We were also missing a much needed roof rack and would have had to leave a lot behind and even still had a tight squeeze. However we were able to track one down at the last minute. It's always interesting how everything comes together at the last moment. Finally left Calgary for Kamloops to play a show at The Loft with Nous Nous Et Vous and La Cadence. It was hot but everyone was in good spirits. The group was all pretty laid back and understanding so there was no doubt we would all get along great. Danny a friend of mine from high school was filling in for Mark who was unable to make it, and everyone was really welcoming to him. We rolled into Kamloops right on time and spent a little bit of time searching for the venue, when we decided to park and take a walk to where we thought it was, but just as we parked, Michaela from Nous Nous Et Vous walked up and said they figured a big van circling the area must be us. The Loft is a recording studio that they also use as a venue sometimes, a pretty good set up. The show was awesome and everyone enjoyed it. The other bands were really great too and it was well attended by an audience who were really involved in the local music community and really added to the entire show's energy. We were so lucky to connect with such an awesome music community our first day out. We were able to sell quite a bit of merch, some bracelets the girls had made on the drive and buttons we had made before we left. I even attempted to make a bracelet, but I didn't notice it laid out with any of the others, my suspicions are it got taken apart and used for someone elses... We had to sell the cd's we had without cases as some were shipped to Vancouver and the others left in Portland, so we had to get everyone's addresses to ship them to them later. Kris Ruston from La Cadence was kind enough to let us sleep at his house. Highlight of the show, the "Whale Song" by Nous Nous Et Vous. Come see them August 5th, 2007 at EMMEDIA!

Saturday/Sunday June 2/3, 2007
On our way to Vancouver we stopped at Hope's Riverside Manor to play a show for their residents in exchange for lunch. The menu was liver and onions that day but lucky for us they changed it to something a bit more appealing. The whole way there we were thinking how great it would be to have mashed potatoes and ice cream, and that's exactly what we got, not together of course. Everyone sat at different tables with some of the residents and visited with them over lunch. I sat with Albert who informed me that who used be the drummer in a Calgary band, "The Polkadots", and was also a freelance musician, but he didn't play much anymore as he was too sore. Everyone really enjoyed the show and they were really excited. One lively lady, who was 90!, got up and danced to a few songs. By the end of the show the band had even inspired Albert to jam on the organ as we packed up. Then we were off to Vancouver where we chilled out the rest of the day. We ate at The Foundation, much recommended to anyone going to Vancouver, and enjoyed a great zine while we ate. Very informative, about "Where to Stick It & Where NOT to Stick It". The "Giving Tree" was by far the best. The girl's went back to Jaque & Yvonne's and packed cd's, while the boys went on an adventure to a sold out DJ show and ended up taking a 3 hr late-night detour around Stanley Park into a dead end. It was a good sociological experience. The next morning Jen cooked us a great home-style breakfast of omelettes and fresh vegetables and then we headed out for the day. Danny to his uncle's, Clea & Laura to visit Laura's grandmother and the rest of us enjoyed the waterfront and flea market. We made a stop off to get the van washed by a group of tight bodied, tanned and wet Capoeira fighters; in a funeral home parking lot... well worth it. The show that night was at Hoko's Sushi Bar, a pretty sketchy area just off Hastings where we were treated to some more social experiences; such as the crack heads squatting and smoking just outside the venue. Other than that a really nice place with really good sushi. It was a small turnout but everyone enjoyed it anyways. Kellarissa, Wintermitts, & A Relative Distance (Jaque) all had great sets and it was good to be able to see so many amazing performers.

Monday June 4, 2007
Took the ferry across to Victoria. A little stressful trying to find the terminal on time, but we caught the one half an hour later anyways. It was a smooth ride over with a nice view. Jen's friend Ben met up with us for ice cream and we stayed at his family's huge house. The band was able to set up and practice for a bit, running through some new songs. Everything sounded good and Jen's new song was coming along nicely. We had a nice midnite walk along the beach. It was good for everyone to be able to relax and catch up on emails and have real beds and lots of space for everyone.

Tuesday June 5, 2007
Woke up and practiced again. I attempted to get us some discounts or exchanges for accomodations for a show at some campgrounds and hostels along the way, it was dissapointing to learn that no one is really interested in trade and barter anymore. We toured around Victoria a bit while Clea and Laura got fresh new haircuts, luckily not buzz cuts. Solstice Cafe was really nice and Jolleen Pollard, who happened to work there played a set. There was a big turnout and it was a good show, with Radar monitoring our sound thoroughly. Afterwards we went to Logan's pub and watched Buena Buya, Curt who was friend's with Danny and Clea, Laura, and Jared went to school with. They will also be playing at Mukwah August 11th! We informed Danny the next morning that Radar had a little crush on him.

Wednesday June 6, 2007
We slowly made our way out to Duncan, where we stayed at Jen's Dad's house. The band played at the Duncan Garage Showroom. One of the most interesting places I've ever watched a show in. There were trinkets and toys all over the place, many things to look at and play with. I'm sure th place must have been featured on Weirdest Venues on TLC or something. Long John was really friendly and at the end of the show he released his 11 small dogs who sat patiently in the van for the set. Afterwards we went back to Jen's and relaxed. Got some sleep while the others took a 3 hour walk out to the Trans Canada Walkway Bridge.

Thursday June 7, 2007
Got a late start as per usual and headed back to Victoria and prepared for... "The Border Crossing: This consisted in our elaborate plan in which Jared and I would split up and pretend to be backpacking/bussing down to Santa Clarita with a bunch of camera gear and instruments on our backs, Jen going to do some hiking around Port Angeles, and Danny, Laura and Clea were crossing to go play a baby shower for Clea's sister in New York (pretty far drive) They were grilled a bit getting onto the ferry. It was a beautiful crossing where we got a nice view of the mountains half covered by clouds and Port Angeles. Then we split up again. This time Jared & I had a bit of a harder time as another man going through at the same time as us had radiology in Victoria and set off some sensor and the woman became suspicious of us. We all got through alright but it was an hour before we got in contact with the other half as we were worried about phoning each other in the middle of an interrogation. It was a successful crossing and luckily all our preparation wasn't really needed as some of our stories were pretty weak. We camped that night just outside of Port Angeles.

Friday June 8, 2007
As we arrived late and left early we blew off camping fees, we tore out of there like a bat out of hell, well it wasn't that early but no one had said anything to us and no one was really standing and watching so... hopefully. We stopped at a coffee shop run by a small grassroots church organization who were nice enough to let us wash up and use hot water for our oatmeal, the internet and of course we got coffee. The band played them an impromptu one song show with the uke. We headed off to Seattle from there to Jordan Oh Jordan's place. Stopped in at Pike Place Market for a few hours and then went to Jordan's to help put up a forest of paper cut out animals and plants. It was really awesome, reminiscent of Summerwood Warren shows, as Jordan's show was a big influence that, but in a livingroom. The place filled up quickly and everyone found places on the floor. First off was a solo act, some guy with a nice beard according to Clea (Danny's and mine were only a few days in whereas he seemed to have a few months start). Lusty Leaf kicked off their amazing set next; they had just arrived from Portland and had been staying up for the past week to record their album, which they were literally mastering and burning on the road. We would tour with them the next five shows. Then the Blank Tapes from California who were yet another amazing band. Finally Polka Dot Dot (who Jordan was also in) came on and the place was even more packed than it had been all night, we had to listen from the kitchen. It was the last show at the Polka Dot house as Jordan was moving, and it seemed like a perfect send off.

Saturday June 9, 2007
We were served fantastic pancakes for breakfast and we helped clean up after the night's mess. Then we headed off for Olympia, stopping in Tacoma for lunch on a small traffic circle island. We got to Ross' from June Madrona, and he made us a great meal from some rescued food and we played an awesome game of Capture the Flag with giant foam swords and spears. The Consonant C versus Lusty Leaf for who would play first that night. Lusty Leaf and Ross massacred us. We arrived at the Artisan's Cafe. The sound wasn't that great and the resulting set was a bit sketchy. We did get free drinks & food from the cafe though. Lusty Leaf were followed by Ben Kamen. There wasn't much of a turnout but it was a nice show anyways. Jen was able to borrow a harp from Onyx of Polka Dot Dot until we picked up the small harp that was shipped to Portland. Bobby had brought the cs's and buttons we had shipped to him and we were able to sell a few without cases that we still had to pick up. Onyx let us crash at her place and do some laundry luckily she had enough beds for everyone. It was a crazy house where people who used to live there always seemed to come back to visit and their everything drawer was filled with anything you could possibly think of.

Sunday June 10, 2007
On our way out of Olympia we stopped at a pancake breakfast put on by local 4-H kids. We were suckers for cute girls or cute kids jumping up and down on the sides of streets, hollering and waving neon signs style of advertising. So far there were no major fights and any of the tension was from lack of sleep or hunger. It can get tough for 6 people to live in such a confined space for such a long period of time where you are stuck together with no personal space, but we seemed to get through it all and still enjoy each others company. We got to Portland to Cooper's (from Lusty Leaf) house and played a brunch show with Lusty Leaf and The Morals. There was a good turn out as it was their home turf and a good line up. The Morals had a really fun and fresh set where they had a lot of audience participation and weren't shy about making mistakes which they would just turn into a joke. There was a lot of positive energy and the crowd fed off of it. Lusty Leaf was playing their last show together as the band was at that moment. Bobby and Cooper would continue on for a couple more shows and Liz one more in Eugene, OR. They had been together over the years with people coming and going and that final group of Bobby, Cooper, Niko, and Liz had recorded their cd and were having a final tour, before Lusty Leaf would be laid to rest, for now... There was a lot of downtime afterwards and we had giant/cheap burritos and checked out a music store where Jared bought a symbols case, Danny pined over an old folk guitar and Laura looked into a real ukulele. The band practiced at Cooper's that night and had a meeting and then everyone chilled out in their own way.

Monday June 11, 2007
We got up and went to breakfast at Kelly's Olympia, a place that's been around for over 100 years and was involved in prohibition and had the Shanghai Tunnels underneath it. We sat around in internet cafes the rest of the day and caught up on things, and decided to head up to Astoria along the coast as we had a few days off. Interesting fact, the Goonies was shot in and around Astoria, a fact I reallized all too late. We drove out that night and were pulled over by the Clatsop County state troopers, clocked at 30 miles over the speed limit. Sometimes the view is just too nice to have to watch your speed. Then we bonded by campfire in Fort Steven's State Par where we were mugged by a wily group of raccoons looking for a marshmallow binge. One came right up and stole an entire bag. We went to the bushes to try and see it and were snarled at pretty viciously so we slunk back.

Tuesday June 12, 2007
We got up and while paying for the campsite decided to rent a Yurt for the night. I highly recommend it to anyone. We went to the beach and swam in the ocean, giant waves. It was afternoon high tide, pretty impressive but also very cold. There was an impromptu nude beach jam and then we headed back to the Yurt. Some of us went back to town for groceries, laundry, etc. while the others enjoyed the yurt's spacious interior (enough beds for everyone and also with a heater for the night). The band practiced in the Yurt while I struggled to make chili juggling it between the few tiny pots we had.

Wednesday June 13, 2007
Considered building a Yurt instead of a house one day. The band had another morning practice while I attempted to make the van somewhat liveable again and packed up. We headed back to Portand to pick up the rest of the CD cases and then went off to Eugene, Oregon for an impromptu show. Stumptown was closed so we weren't able to get the cases but on our way into Eugene we came across the only radio station in Eugene by accidentally bumping a button, and who should be on it but our friends from Lusty Leaf at that exact moment. We listened to the interview and they sent shout-outs to us and had one of our songs played, really awesome timing. Just as one of their songs from their album was finished playing they pulled up and we headed into Shady Pines, a house show. Lusty Leaf played in the back porch while we set up in the basement. There were chickens and a giant beautiful garden in the backyard. Liz and one of her friends started up a Zydeco set, and right after a group of girls sand some mostly acappella tunes that were amazing. The group played last in the basement and then we were put up for the night and all fell asleep as we were deadn tired, and everyone else stayed up a little while longer.

Thursday June 14, 2007
In the morning we checked out what Eugene's public library had to offer in way of breakfast and internet and then headed out on the long drive to Arcata, California. We stopped an hour outside of Grant's Pass at a little river where there were a bunch of locals partying. We had a naked/semi-naked swim and then back on the road. We had an awesome drive throught the Redwood Forrest, dining on Bagels, creamcheese, avacados, and spinach as we wound through the trees, it was pretty intense. Then we had a quiet show at Da Gast Haus with the Blank Tapes again, and T.V Cohran and his friend. They were really good sets. Lusty Leaf played without Liz and the newly added Caressa (djembe player). The only audience were the other bands and the 2 tenants of the house that stayed for the summer, but it was really nice anyways.

Friday June 15, 2007
Took off from Arcata back into some really nice rain forrests and along the coast. Would have been really nice to have time to stop and check it out, next time. Got to Redding, California and all had a craving for fish and chips (after we're away from the coast...) Stopped in a hotel restaurant and had a medicore meal, but our waiter was really cool and chatted with us about being in a band. He was a bass player for a local band. Went to a park by the river and played a nice accoustic show. It was originally supposed to be in someone's basement that was flooded out. Lust Leaf played first and as we were wrapping up the show the park police came to kick us out and ended up staying for a song and didn't rush us out. Everyone was pleasant and welcoming to them and I think they were really surprised to see people actually just out enjoying themselves and listening to music. We ended up staying at Zak's (the organizer) girlfriend's parent's house and everyone slept outside on the trampoline, hammock, and ground.

Saturday June 16, 2007
It was really nice out and we all woke up baking in the sun, some of us to a sprinkler system... We left with Lusty Leaf and drove out to a really awesome place an hour away by Big Bend. It was a secluded swimming spot with small waterfall. There were a few other small groups of people and a bunch of us jumped from the cliff and tree that came from the waterfall. We found a campsite and Caressa & I cooked dinner as Bobby and Cooper scoured for firewood. The band practiced by firelight and we had a really good late dinner and slept by the campfire.

Sunday June 17, 2007
Left early to Oakland, California on the I-5 intense driving. Ended up pretty close to the venue for not having directions to it. Got to Mama Buzz Cafe and watched 1, 2, 3 Picnic! and Anamude, and then played to a small crowd. Oblake and Will from 1, 2, 3, Picnic! both offered us a place to stay and so did Anna, the cellist and her boyfriend Mike from Anamude. We stayed at Oblakes' (A burner/circus performer that Jen ended up knowing from Duncan, BC several years prior) and were able to shower and get cleaned up for the first time in days.

Monday June 18, 2007
Had breakfast with Oblake and a band meeting. We headed into San Francisco and parked at a hotel valet for the van and equipment's safety. Jared and Danny headed off to Haight & Ashburry to hang out with burnt out hippies and check out music stores. Jen wandered around on her own, ended up in the White Horse where she had a drink bought for her and free appetizers. Laura , Clea and I went on the muni transportation system sightseeing. We went up to the Palace of Fine Arts and Exploratorium only to find that it was the one day it isn't open. The Palace was really beatiful however and we wandered around to the beach and were just able to make out the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz through the smog and fog. Everyone met back up and Jared showed us his new tat (an old style microphone) then we headed back to Oakland to stay at Anna & Mike's in their awesome house. They were great hosts.

Tuesday June 19, 2007
We were finally able to do some laundry and had an awesome breakfast. The band practiced and I went to the laundromat to wash the much needed sleeping bags and read an interesting article in National Geographic on Love and how it can somewhat be related to OCD and Autism in the chemistry of the brain. Turns out Mike records in the house and had recorded some pretty big names like Laura Veirs, who was his brother's prom date. We headed back into San Francisco and had dinner with Will at a Southern Indian restaurant and then hit the road to find a campground or hostel on the way to Mountainview, California. We ended up heading all the way south to Santa Cruz and got a motel for 3 people and steathily snuck the rest in using each other's sweaters and dodging security camera. It was pretty intense having to go back several times for equipment. Also when we stopped to ask for a hotel at a 7-11, this guy who had apparently just got off shift said he would take us and we ended up following him for 15 minutes wondering if he was going to lead us out to the boonies and take us out. But he found us the cheapest motel we could probably get at 1am and went on his way.

Wednesday June 20, 2007
Scoped out Santa Cruz after fleeing the motel, the first 3 of us leaving earlier and meeting the rest at a bowling alley down near the boardwalk. Laura & Clea rented cruiser bikes and rode around town. Danny & Jared checked out local shops and record stores downtown. Jen walked around the boardwalk and beach and I headed out in an attempt to find the Surfing Museum, situated in an old lighthouse. It ended up being closed and all the waves were pretty weak at that moment so there wasn't any great surfing, but I did get an awesome view of the coast and saw a bunch of sea lions on a huge rock and got down to the beach to have the tide come in and almost get me soaked. Met back up and everyone had bought more stuff to add to the already bursting at the seams van... Took off to Mountainview and had our first taste of Jack in the Box after our long stream of offensive jokes about the name (as well as Hot Carl's or should I say Carl's Jr.) Found the venue after driving in the wrong direction for half an hour. Turns out the same road continues on through another few small cities with no obvious markers. Got to the Red Rock Cafe and played a nice set over the blowing fans and coffee machines. People really enjoyed it however as the surfed the internet and sipped lattes and a few people tipped really generously. We also finally got some CD cases sent to the venue a few days in advance and were able to sell a few. Hit up another hotel in the late night 1/2 price special, on our way on the 101 Santa Maria bound.

Thursday June 21, 2007
Tried to stop at a beach during the afternoon to go swimming and practice on the way to Santa Maria. An older gentleman was offended that we took up one bench area (there were about 5 other places to sit) so that he and his dog could not sit down. Of course we would gladly move to make room for him, but he went on to say that no one else wants to hear us make noise and that it's illegal, and he would go get the Police if we did not leave. He left in any case (as I believe he was even before he spotted us) and we got out of there fast, just incase the law was involved and not to risk being deported. Some people are just looking for any reason to get after other people who may be enjoying themselves. Got to Santa Maria and found out that the venue was Boomer's, a family fun park full of arcade games, go-karts and mini-golf. The band was in the line up for the Santa Maria area's "safe & sober grad party" for 8th and 12th Grades. "Live bands!" us and a few others, one of whom organized the bands, was graduating and also happened to work at Boomer's. There were 2 other solo acts from Orange County, Steven somethins and Ron Hexagon who were both amazing and amusing. We were provided with pizza, drinks and all the free games we could handle. We all felt struck with ADD wandering from one game to the next as we quickly lost interest in each, however could have spent the entire night doing so. The show was good for the few, mostly the bands and kids darting in and out, who were there. It was also pretty funny to pull up to the venue and see a Top 40/R&B Radio DJ setting up a large hispanic youth population arriving, realizing that we probably aren't suited for this gig. However everyone who watched enjoyed it and we really enjoyed the other sets and entertainment. Probably the most interesting show anyone could ever play. We slept in a park that night with a bunch of blankets donated by one of the band's.

Friday June 22, 2007
Woke up and practiced a set in the park and cooked a brunch on the portable stove. Took off and stopped in Santa Barbara for a break and food and to check emails and directions. After an hour and a half we finally tracked down wi-fi, which we had to pay for and set up an account of course, only to find out the show started at 3 pm. As it was 5 and we were still 2 hours away, we didn't play that show. Instead we played a set, on the same hill we were supposed to 5 hours later, with Honeybear (an awesome solo guy - Aaron) and we easily outnumbered the audience, Aaron's friend and 2 girls Jared had met on a cruise the month before. It was really awesome to play on the hill overlooking Thousand Oaks, just outside of LA, as the sunset. We headed into the core of LA and dropped Jen off at her friend's before heading to a hotel in North Hollywood by Universal Studios called El Patio, where again we got a discount.

Saturday June 23, 2007
Left all the equipment in the room and the van at the hotel and went on our seperate ways to check out LA. Danny & Jared to the usual music stores and Laura met up with Aaron to check out Venice Beach, finding an interesting 4 hr detour back on LA's fine transit system. Jared, Clea and I met up and watched a live performance of Hollywood's Popschool teaching LA's 15 year old girls to be stars. Jared left after to go to Venice Beach with one of his gals. Clea and I wandered around seeing the sites of Hollywood and caught a show at Grauman's Chinese Theatre, really beautiful inside. Danny spent over $125 on records and scored some free swag from Amoeba, watched a salsa band and hit up a shisha lounge. We all met up back at the hotel and packed the van. Jared slept in the van to stand guard of the equipment.

Sunday June 24, 2007
Woke up at 4:30 am and piled into the van to alleviate the traffic stresses of LA. Drove a 15 hour stretch to sleep in a reststop just outside of Portland. Oh and there was a stop where we completely ran out of gas and Jen and Laura had a little adventure hitchiking to get some where they road with a masseus who sang in a choir? and were picked up by the hiway patrol for the ride back.

Monday June 25, 2007
Got into Portland and finally picked up the cd cases and a new uke for Laura and headed on to Vancouver. No problems at the border as the guard was charmed by the always cute Clea & Laura. Stayed at Danny's Uncle Glenn's awesome party pad. Everyone crashed right away as no one had more than 4 hours sleep the last 48 hours.

Tuesday June 26, 2007
Had a practice session in Glenn's backyard and set up an impromptu gig dubbed Glennstock 2007 for that night in the backyard. Checked out Vancouver for a couple of hours and got back and played an awesome show in the backyard for a great friends and family in the area with drinks and BBQ for everyone and even got to celebrate Jared's birthday (which according to him was one of his best by far). Too much to talk about but there was late night kareokee...

Wednesday June 27, 2007
Clea an Laura picked up the car from her Grandmother to drive back to Calgary while we packed the van and said our goodbyes to Glenn & Trash, 2 really amazing people. They had a perfect pary house to have a show, with an amazing backyard including a pool and gazebo thing. We left for Revelstoke and arrived just in time, even though our contact didn't show up for another hour. We set up and Danny, Jared, and Jen had to pull a set out of their asses until Clea and Laura showed up by the end, ready to start the 2nd set. Apparently the Revelstoke Grizzly Plaza Street Festival had a band play every Wednesday for June and July. It was a 3 hour show with just the band playing but definately worth the money. There was an average of 20 or so people for each set and people sat and watched and wandered away after a set and then more would show up. The band's energy was great and they played a few songs they had never before and it all sounded awesome and everyone seemed to enjoy it. Unfortunately no cd sales but there was this one amazing lady, Georgeanne who stayed for most of the performance and got up and danced to a few songs. She loved the band so much that she payed for a hotel room for us at the "Swiss Chalet" where she worked, a truly generous and lovely character. She told us all sorts of interesting stories about herself. She also let Danny know how attractive she thought he was, gave him a ring and told him if she were 20 years younger... We showed our appreciation by giving her a cd and several bracelets and buttons from our merch tub. Laura and Georgeanne had a nice visit walking over to the hotel and then she insured we got in without any problems. Everyone passed out right away.

Danny and Jared got up at 6am to get home with a little bit of time before practice that afternoon. We all left a little later in Laura's car after breakfast and stopped in at the Wolves Wildlife Centre just outside of Golden. We realized only once we finally found the place, that we hadn't considered the hour time jump in our travel time and didn't have anytime to visit, so we payed $5 each to quickly go see the wolves and hopped back in the car. We rushed back to Calgary but were caught up in a traffic jam caused by a holiday trailer roll over. Nice way to start out the long weekend. We were late for practice by an hour but the band was able to go throught the entire set and get the van loaded and down to Broken City by 7. The Sled Island show was an awesome homecoming and was pretty packed and so many people just came to see the band, more fans than we had previously realized. The set was really energy driven and people were even singing along. The sound wasn't the best, as the sound guy seemed to just leave for a smoke break whenever he felt like it during the set, no one seemed to care and were just enjoying the awesome set and happy to see each other. We packed up and went our seperate ways after a month together everyday. It was pretty anticlimatic but we knew we would see each other again before too long. We ended the evening by going to our awesome friends' Azeda Booth's show at Cantos and finally made our way home to the apartment to our welcoming bed and couch for Laura for a much needed rest before setting up the Bunnyhill show the next day. Good to be back!

"SPOTLIGHT ON CALGARY: THE CONSONANT C
Best band in Calgary? Quite possibly. Between their strange instrumentation and stunning vocal harmonies, these three girls are creating some of the best music anyone anywhere has to offer."

The Consonant C is a group of musicians held together by a glue of  love, making music like little lanterns  that cluster into somewhat organised constellations of sound. Incubated during cold nights in Calgary basements, Laura , Clea , Jennifer , Mark  and Jared woo their audiences by making ghost noises, thumping drums, plucking banjos, strumming harps, rubbing wine glass rims,  plinking Glockenspiels, banging pianos, and stirring fantastic four part vocal harmonies.  Bringing together various musical backgrounds including formal training in classical and jazz, forays in Punk rock and folk, and love affairs with what is know down south as New Weird American, they display a playful zeal for every influence. As founding members of local collective The Summerwood Warren, they regularly collect the Calgary music community into heart bursting all aged nights of adventure and creativity, involving video projections, artistic installations, the occasional tobogganing excursion, and yes, live appearances from the band. Specializing in creative performance, they are likely to dress up as animals, build you a blanket fort, or at the very least, to have you singing, howling, and loving along.
