Who is When Cars Ascend?

Christian Menno
Staff Writer, play magazine

Forget about that played-out "when pigs fly" expression. That's so damn yesterday. These days, it's all about When Cars Ascend. Catchy, huh? Try using it in everyday conversation. Well one band is ahead of the phrase game. They are appropriately called When Cars Ascend. Coming out of the Downingtown/West Chester area, this foursome will be taking flight at RockFest on Sept. 15. Aside from being great musicians, these guys are genuine zombie killers. Check 'em out.

Tell us the basics:

Jack Baker - Bass. He says sure 1 million times a day.

Shaun Carr - Guitar and lead vocals. also in a solo project called Cricket Joe.

Justin (JT) Rothstein - Drums. Has curly hair.

Chris Thornton - lead guitar, has a size 15 and a half shoe.

Where y'all from?

We're all from the Downingtown/West Chester, JT just moved to Philly.

What's with the name?

On the bus to New York to go see project object play, JT looked at Shaun and said, 'Wouldn't it be sick if the cars just took off.'

How would you describe your sound?

A disturbance of mechanical energy that propagates through matter as a wave.

When and how did the band get together?

We have all been friends since early in high school and decided to start a band in May of 2006, Jack joined a little later.

Are there any dominant themes in your songwriting?

Lots of word play, sarcasm, alienation and coping. just being confused really.

Any finished albums?

We have a finished EP called Das Komet.

Who are your strongest musical influences?

Pixies, Built to Spill, Sonic Youth, Flaming Lips, Modest mouse, Hendrix, Zappa, mountain goats, Yes, Allman Brothers and the Beatles.

Who would make up your ultimate 'dream team' of music?

Drums- Steven Drozd

Guitar- George Harrison

Bass- Victor Wooten

Guitar- Ronald Jones

Vocals- Yasuko Onuki and Yoshimi P-We.

Any good stories from the road?

Chris saved us by fighting off over 100 zombies in Tennessee.

What inspires you?

Music.

What song is in your head right now?

Shaun - Daniel Johnson, Funeral Home.

JT -Caribou, Melody Day.

Chris - Modest Mouse, Whenever I Breathe Out, You Breathe In.
Jack - Explosions in the Sky.

Where's the coolest place to play a show?

Spazz House in Philly, its lots and lots of drunk college kids crammed in a basement surrounded by old kegs.

What happens after a typical show?

We find a place to hang out and sleep.

Close your eyes and picture where you'll be in five years. What does it look like?

Rockin'.

Any downfalls to being a musician?

Band brawls.

Tell us a good joke. We like jokes.

If I have to move up in a building, I choose the elevator over the escalator. Because one time I was riding the escalator and I tripped. I fell  for an hour and a half.

Where can we find you on the Web?

wynnerecords.com or myspace.com/whencarsascend
