The fomartion of Downfall and the story of how we ended up the way we are now is pretty confusing. And in order for me to not have to tell anybody the whole fucking thing when im drunk again, im gonna write it ALL out here.
It all started on the way to a motorhead gig in glasgow 2005. Matt and Damon were on the bus to Aberdeen when Matt asked Damon if he was up for starting a rock n roll style band (in light of the fact we were going to see motorhead). Matt and Damon went to the gig with Mike and Munky was in the crowd (who knew we'd be playing together not long after).
On return home Matt asked close friend Gary Addison (bassist of Aberdeen bands Tears of Grace and Seventh Circle) to play bass and sing in this band. He agreed and Soldier Society was formed. While playing a little acoustic song in music at Ellon Academy, Matt had the idea to ask another close friend and drummer (Mark Smart) to play rythm guitar (he had been playing in the song with us. This completed the line-up of Soldier Society.
As this band we wrote, the now Downfall songs, Lost, Dead Man Walking, Into the Fire and Waste my Time. Performing at school concerts etc was all this band ever really did. However the first gig came in April 2006 when one of Matts old friends from Elgin, Munky (who at that time was starting a band with Matt; Kill Theory) put on a gig in Elgin for the two bands to play with others. Unfortunatly Kill Theory had to pull out due to the band not being ready (good demo recorded though). However, when Soldier Society arrived, Munky got on well instantly with the other members and as a result jammed with us and agreed to sing during our cover of Demise Of Sanity by Black Label Society..............it was the only good part of the gig.
While crashing/squatting at Munkys house in Elgin, Damon asked if Munky would sing for his old (but wanting to be reincarinated) side project Downfall, soon asking Matt to drum. It was soon obvious that merging the projects could be awesome. So Soldier Society was shot at dawn and members Gary, Damon and Matt moved to Downfall. Mark was given the boot (took a long time to actually tell him cause we were all too chicken shit, sorry dude). Old Downfall member Mike (from 2004, when it was essentially Damon and Mike jamming in bedrooms coming up with riffs, some of which are now used in Forge and Immunity) got his place as a guitarist back. Kill Theory died away as well and Munky then joined as singer.
So Downfall was created and had its first full practice with all members; Munky: lead singer. Gary: bassist and backing singer. Damon: lead guitar. Mike: rythm guitar. Matt: drums. in the middle of June 2006. New song Syndromism was written very quickly after this and the boys headed for the studio (which had been booked for Soldier Society) at the end of June 2006.
The studio (Floor Tom productions, run by the lovely Steve) is near Mintlaw and had been used by Munky for his old band recordings for Saving the Nine and Kill Theory (which Matt went to and booked for Soldier society). The demo "Eye of the Downfall" contained five songs: Syndromism; Dead Man Walking; Into the Fire; Waste My Time and Lost. These were put onto myspace and the mission to get heard began. The guys them practiced and got together a set list and were given their first gig at the Moorings bar in Aberdeen by Chris (Petes brother-thats how everyone knows him hahaha) from Radio Lucifier, on Saturday the 21st of October. The gig went really well and we felt really confident that we could go somewhere with this. However Gary had recently taken on more hours at his job and with two other bands (which he had been in first) as well as university; he felt it was time to leave. he decided to play our next gig on Thursday the 16th of November (headlining at Cafe Drummonds in Aberdeen). Prior to this date Downfall began looking for a new bassist and found one in the shape of Wayne. A talented guy from Undy. Gary came to a couple of practices to teach Wayne the songs before he left. Wayne left, to play bass for his brother, before he even properly started.
Mike had developed a love of bass over the recent weeks and as a classicly trained guitarist, he could kick some serious ass with his fingers. We then decided that instead of looking for a new bassist we would become a four piece and have, the now current line-up: Munky-lead vocals; Damon-guitars and backing vocals: Mike-bass: Matt-drums.
After a small break and then more jams, the boys came back better than ever playing at kef on Thursday the 18th of January 2007. The gig kicked (in our opinion) ample amounts of ass and we felt re-energized and wanted to carry on.
With more and more gigs coming up, a new EP being recored on the 28th of April 2007. And a summer mini-tour, Downfall are up and running and fuckin' love what they do.
Sadly though this was to change with Munky leaving the band to persue other projects. So the band was down one singer, allthough Damon Martin took up the vocals (check out his solo stuff its awesome) and we got an old friend that Mike and damon have known for years by the name of Chris Williams to take the place as a second guitarist. Chris left a few months down the line after rocking out on our first proper ep Burn.
Next came Colin Ellis, Colin was a huge fan of the band from the very beginnings and when we asked him to play he was over the moon, a very loyal member and a metal head to his very bones, Colin brought a bit of chunk that had been missing from the band. He was involved with the writing of our track red tide that features on the thrid fat hippy sampler adn in our latest ep Unstoppable. Colin has been a very dedicated member who would drop everything and anything to come and rock out. After a year and a half in the band that has seen us finally start getting round the country, we parted ways with Colin.
Now we're into late 2009, we've got some cool support slots coming up, new ideas and recordings in the works as well as more further afield gigs. We've recently been signed to independant label Piledriver Records. With the addition of ex-Hot Mangu guitarist Sandy Ince, the ideas are coming thick and fast. We're very excited to see what direction things will take and can't wait to get to work.
There you have it, quite a complex story, I wrote this out once and wrote "hopefully it won't change again and I won't have to type it out again" but it did and i did lol, so i'll leave this open hahaha.........
Thanks a lot. Matt
