Peace Friends & Family...

Times have changed, just like the weather is changing, things must depart in order for new creations to flourish in this life. Everything has it's purpose and time that it serves it's purpose for us.
We are sad to say that AFRICA HI-FI's home, Sonotheque has run it's course in Chicago and has been sold. We will miss Sonotheque and it's presence in Chicago as a premiere music venue & all it's contributed to our nightlife here. And we will definitely miss seeing you all and putting on AFRICA HI-FI events for you. We'd like to take this opportunity to Thank you for supporting, dancing, bringing your bright spirits to our night. We are proud of our 5 YR run & hope that it served a meaningful purpose to your lives.
We will never forget our times together & all of you who have contributed in any way to AHF over the years. We appreciate you!

"Whatever may happen, don't be afraid come what may, since it won't stay, don't be afraid , savour the moment and leave what is gone and fear not for what may come."
-Rumi

:Let's try to remember how important it is to support music venues that we like & bring something rare to us, so that we do not continue to watch the quality venues and events dwindle away....:

May we see each other again in happiness & good health.

AFRICA HI-FI PRESS:

"In addition to being one of the best parties in the city in terms of musical talent and the diversity of the crowd, the monthly event supports Next Aid and Amnesty International, among others."- Stop Smiling

"Spiritually aware, deep music night Africa Hi-Fi comes back to Sonotheque for another go-round. Resident Ron Trent has been a key figure in Chicago's house explosion and was once resident and A&R man for New York's Giant Step label. He dips into jazz, house and hip-hop...Whatever he does, he always schools us properly. The gregarious Sonia Hassan hosts." -Time Out Chicago

"There's something to be said for a party that promotes diversity in nightlife, good music and peace and love over everything else. Africa Hi-Fi manages to do just that each time it takes over Sonotheque, with superb dance music from legendary DJ Ron Trent (who was praised by Sonotheque's Joe Bryl when we interviewed him last year) and the earthy socialite skills of host Sonia H. You may not be able to belly up to the bar for free booze, but you can get a different kind of warm, fuzzy feeling by knowing that Africa Hi-Fi supports NextAid and Amnesty International."

AFRICA HI-FI is proud to celebrate our 5 YEAR ANNIVERSARY with you all on SATURDAY JULY 11th at Sonotheque!
And we are even more excited to bring in some female energy to our event with our special guest, RASHIDA (L.A.) Djing with AHF's Master Resident DJ RON TRENT!
SONIA H. as always is there to welcome you and is devoted to making your AFRICA HI-FI experience blissful!

In the last ten years, DJ RASHIDA has established herself as one of the most sought after female DJs in the world. She has played her signature fusion of hip-hop, pop, electro, rock, funk, soul, reggae, and house around the globe.

In 2004, Rashida started spinning at The House of Blues on Sunset Strip, where she performed with artists including Kanye West, The Roots, Jill Scott, and John Legend. While holding down her weekly residency, Prince approached Rashida about a potential collaboration. The collaboration blossomed into much more as Rashida has become an integral part of Prince's live performance, touring around the world with the mega-star as part of his live show as well as spinning at all of his private parties.

Rashida was a featured performer at Lollapalooza in 2006 and, building on her work with Prince, Rashida's client list has exploded over the last several years as she is frequently called upon to spin for a bevy of corporate and celebrity clients including People, Italian Vogue, Pepsi, Nike, Miss Sixty, Nylon, Jay-Z, Michael Jordan, Lisa Marie Presley, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Kimora Lee Simmons. Rashida is currently starring on MTV's hit reality show America's Best Dance Crew and is the star of Honda's Chris Robinson-directed "Red Hood" series of commercials set to air in April 2009.

:GE-OLOGY:

GE-OLOGY has garnered a lasting reputation as a prominent DJ, gifted music producer and immensely skilled visual artist, it’s quite difficult to place him in a box due to the far reach of his interests, influences and abilities.

He's known for producing prolific quality-driven music for acclaimed recording artists such as Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Sadat X, De La Soul, Jill Scott, Pharoahe Monch, Vinia Mojica, Res, Yukimi Nagano and Jem amongst many others (including remixes for PPP and J-Dilla, Pete Rock and Grand Agent and numerous releases of his own). From America’s MTV News “You Hear It First” to MTV Thailand, throughout the pages of numerous print publications and magazines  as well as his guest appearances on London’s BBC radio (Gilles Peterson’s “Worldwide” and Benj B’s “Deviation” shows) to J-WAVE on the island of Japan; his music playing out from owering multi-story LCD screens on street corners in Tokyo to television screens and shows broadcasted in homes across the globe, and across the US throughout upscale emporiums such as Nordstrom department stores to his animated art airing on cable network’s Comedy Central, GE-OLOGY’s name, art, sound and likeness is likely to be found anywhere, defying geographical borders, genre, media arena or preconceived boundaries. Gracing elevated billboards overlooking downtown NYC streets in SoHo to producing a top 10 hit reaching #6 on the Billboard Music Chart (lead single from Welsh songstress Jem, whose debut album went platinum in the UK…an LP which GE-OLOGY also produced 2 other top songs) is clearly an auspicious testament to his ubiquitouscreative fingerprint.

GE-OLOGY keeps dance floors jumping through seamless blends that coalesce from Rare Funk, Breakbeats, Classic & Future Soul, Latin, Free-Jazz, Funk-Jazz, Afro-Beat, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian Samba & Bossa Nova, Deep & Classic House, Detroit Techno, Dance Classics, Classic Rock, Underground & Classic Hip Hop, Broken-Beat, Roots & Reggae, Dub & Dub-Step and more.

From the dance floor to the gallery, record shops to the TV screen, radio to the magazines, internet to who knows where he’ll end up next, rest assured…as quoted by writer Hua Hsu in Urb Magazine's 9th annual ‘Next 100’ issue, GE-OLOGY’s
"on the cusp of something seismic". Brace yourself!

Below are just a few profound prophetic statements by MLK jr...may his soul be rested in peace with his wife, Coretta Scott.. and may his inspirational words and accomplishments never be forgotten.

:MARTIN LUTHER KING jr.
January 15, 1929 - April 4, 1968

"America is essentially a dream. It is a dream of a land where men of all races, of all nationalities and of all creeds can live together as brothers. The substance of the dream is expressed in these profound words: We hold these truths to be self evident, that ALL men are created equal."

"We will be able to emerge from the bleak and desolate midnight of man's inhumanity to man to the bright and glittering day break of freedom and justice."

"We've got difficult days ahead. Like anybody, I'd like to live a long life but I'm not concerned about that now, I just want to do GOD's will and HE' s allowed me to go up to the mountain, and I've looked over and I've seen the promise land. I may not get there with you but I want you to know tonight that we as a people will get to the promise land. And I am happy tonight. I'm not worried about anything, I'm not fearing any man. My eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the LORD."

"Deep in my heart I do believe We Shall Overcome!
We will bring new light in the dark chambers of pessimism and we will be able to rise form despair to hope. And this will be a great AMERICA! And we will be the participants in making it so. And so as I leave you this evening I say, walk together, don't you get weary!"

:KING BRITT:
King Britt is a pioneer of all things soulful, rhythmically textured and melodically provocative. This Philadelphia native has found a way to escape the strictures of a single category of music by expressing his creations through deep house, hip-hop, broken beat, nu-jazz, funk and afro-tech. Whether it's film scoring for Hollywood, rocking a dancefloor in Tokyo or consulting for the leading urban lifestyle brands, there are no limits to what King Britt will do next.

King began his career in music as E-Culture, producing the underground hit 12-inch, "Tribal Confusion (Strictly Rhythm, 1990)". After touring Europe's dance clubs, King became DJ for the Grammy award winning Digable Planets in 1992. As the wax poet for Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler, Doodlebug and Ladybug, the band changed the face of modern hip-hop by fusing skat-style jazz with lyrical, deep and soulful vocal flow. While touring the globe with Digable, King continued to develop his love of the dance music culture and made numerous appearances in house music clubs all over the world, setting the stage for his planetary DJ career. He continues to deliver performances as a house, hip-hop, funk and even 80's DJ, to adoring fans the world over.

As a band leader and music director, King Britt heads up the Sylk130 collective. This ensemble, formed in 1994, weighs in with over a dozen top notch Philadelphia musicians and performers, including Ursula Rucker, Alma Horton, Doc Gibbs, Chuck Treece and Alison Crockette. The group has released two full length LPs, "When the Funk Hits the Fan (Ovum/Sony, 1998)" and "Re-Members Only (Six Degrees, 2001)." The band crafts an eclectic soul-ridden sound "that flows like a dope mix tape from a bygone era of Britt's own imagination," according to Gear magazine.

In the Fall of 2007, The Sylk130 collective brought back King's ten year Monday night residency at Philadelphia's legendary Sylk City venue. As producer and song-writer, King has released numerous full-length albums including the hip-hop odyssey "Adventures in Lo-Fi (BBE/Rapster Records 2002)," for the highly acclaimed BBE Records Beat Generation Series; "Cosmo Afrique (Karma Giraffe, 2003)," an LP of original Afro-Tech productions that features the vocal stylings of Soul II Soul's Wumni, Zap Mama and Diva Blue; "King Britt Presents Sister Gertrude Morgan(Ropeadope Records, 2005)," celebrating and reinterpreting the New Orleans gospel legend Sister Gertrude Morgan; and most recently "The Nova Dream Sequence (Compost, 2006)," a fusion of Kraftwerk-inspired techno and deep sexy house.

As a remix producer, King has flipped and funked everyone from Macy Gray and Tori Amos to Yoko Ono and Femi Kuti. His remix of breakthrough artist Josh One's "Contemplation (5.1 Entertainment)" was nominated for the Dancestar Remix of the Year award, alongside remixes by Danny Tenaglia and Basement Jaxx. Within the last year he has completed remixes for the likes of Curtis Mayfiled, The Ojays, Gamble and Huff, Ben Watt, Dizzie Gilespie, Everything but the Girl and Digable Planets. Several collections of his remixes and original productions have been released including, under his "Scuba" moniker, "Hidden Treasures (Om Records, 2002),"a two-disk greatest hits compilation "This Is...King Britt (V2 UK, 2005)" and the fourth installment of Franciois Kevorkian's Deep and Sexy compilation series (Wave Music, 2007).

In August 2007, King's first free jazz compilation, "King Britt Presents the Cosmic Lounge" will be released (!K7, 2007) As a composer and film music scorer, King Britt has created underscore
and interpretations for the forthcoming blockbuster, Miami Vice (Universal Pictures, 2006), directed by Michael Mann, as well as the National Park Service's civil rights film, Never Lose Sight of Freedom (US Dept of Interior, 2006) and most recently for two Rolex television and film advertisements.

He is also CEO of Five Six Media, the music label and multimedia production house.
