In the words of Mystic...'hey young world!'
It's been a little over a month since I touched down on American soil and I wish I could report that I've recouperated and been able to digest the amazing roller coaster that was Europe, but I'd be lying. Ever since I got back home, it's been go, go, go and the fruits of my labor have continued to flourish and blossom. Funny that in what should be the most barren time of the year (winter), it feels like spring is in full swing for my career! I'm so grateful for the way that the European public embraced me without ever knowing anything about me or my music. Along the way, I made lifelong friends, I became a fan or super talented musicians, I shared stages with artists I've respected and looked up to, I experienced so many breath-taking countries and sights, of course ate delicious mystery food and wrote another chapter in the book of my lifetime and my dreams. A full list of my thank you's will follow soon...I promise! But first, I wanted to share some more of my European treasures with all of you!
First up, you'll notice there's a new song on the music player. For those who don't know, I spent the majority of my time in Switzerland. While I was there, I had the pleasure of meeting a tight-nit group of ridiculously amazing artists who became my Swiss family, rocked shows with me and inspired me to work on tons of new music!!! 'Change Is A Good Thing' is a song I co-wrote with Swiss Vocalist & Slam Poet TigerLily.

This girl is really dope and you should definitely check her out! (www.myspace.com/LilytheTiger) She introduced me to one Lausanne's illest producers, Grand Papa Tra and the chemistry was super fresh. You should check him out and cop his latest album, Rules of Attraction (www.myspace.com/TraProd).

We wrote the track and recorded it the same day. I'm really proud of this track and it really explains what I was going through at the time. I'm sure a lot of people will be able to relate. Check it out and spread the word ;)
Change Is A Good Thing Written & Performed by: TigerLily & Mauikai Produced & Mixed by: Grand Papa Tra
Shedding layers of my skin on a constant evolution Wayward journeys through space and time I walk a different path than those restricted by their minds Embracing freedom to the highest capacity As the clock ticks the world keeps spinning Blood flows through my veins pumping oxygen Brain waves flow and find their way to regenerative states Something's changing inside And like the rivers flow into the seaI keep pieces of who I used to be But I'm growing still becoming someone new
Change is a good thing (is a very good thing) I said change is a very good thing (change is a very good thing) So embrace it embrace it Change is a good thing So embrace it embrace it embrace it embrace it (change is a very good thing)
Just like a flower I have seen rain and sunshine Except that I am constantly reborn My colors may change but I'm forever still the same The rain it washes away the things that I have decided to leave behind Getting the weight off my shoulders it makes me able to soar To rise above what I used to be Good things I have also left behind Because sometimes life is tough And some of our trust gets taken away We must learn to regain them (It's mine mine mine)
Change is a very good thing I said change is a very good thing So embrace it (embrace it, embrace it, embrace it) Embrace it embrace it embrace it Change is a very good thing Change is a very good, Change is a very good, Change is a very good Change is a very good thing Everything evolves Everything changes, nothing stays the same Everything evolves So embrace it Everything evolves So embrace it
Evolving on different paths along the skies Like a planet reflecting the light of me in different shades Things will never be the same and that just makes it more interesting
And the last little jewel I'll leave you with for the time being is something I'm really excited about. Around the time I started dreaming about touring Europe, which is now about 2 years ago, I made a 'MySpace friend' in Italy. Like most of the people I befriended from overseas, she was super sweet and really enthusiastic about my music. We'd go back and forth on the comment tip and I'd always tell her how I wanted to come out to Europe and experience the Hip Hop scene over there. She was really fly and eclectic.

A b-girl, vinyl collector, dj, hip hop journalist, street fashionista, pr agent & Omega Zulu Maasai Queen, Leva57 is one of the most talented sistas I've come to know and love and while I was at the We B*Girlz Festival this August in Berlin, we finally met in person. Wow! She was even more sweet and warm in person! This girl is absolutely amazing and I love her like a sister. She told me how difficult it is to be a woman in hip hop in Italy and how she's had to work three times as hard at proving herself than any man in hip hop in her country. The girl's got mad skills and on a human level, she's been amazing since we met.The queen shot me an email a month or so ago asking if she could interview me for this fresh Italian publication called MAG. I was really honored that she'd ask me, especially since I didn't even rock any shows in Italy this last tour. The issue has been published and I'm really proud to share it with all of you! Now bear in mind, it's been translated into Italian, but I'm posting my original answers to her questions in English as well ;) I'm sure she edited down my novel a little to fit into the two pages they blessed me with, but here it is! Be sure to check them out at http://www.myspace.com/magonmyspace and of course you've got to peep my girl, Leva57 at http://www.myspace.com/Leva57. In addition to the magazine, she's also published the interview on Italy's most prominent online publication HotMc.com. Be on the lookout for the full fleged Italian version online!

Oh and I have to shout out some really important people that rush rush rushed to help me get the shots for MAG! Bolivar aka Bully, thanks for being amazing and patient with me, even when I was grumpy about posing for the millionth shot you took of me ;) You really managed to capture a lot of the diversity in my personality! To Lil Red aka Erika Smith-Palliser, thank you for being so willing to put up with my particular fashion tastes & for doing a great job picking styling the shoot. Watch out for this up-and-coming designer. And last but definitely not least, to Da Bunny Drea! Girl you made my hair look fabulous. And you didn't do such a bad job with impromptu lighting and art direction there, either ;) Check them all out at:
Bolivar Antonio S. - http://www.myspace.com/BullyBeanzy Erika Smith-Palliser - http://www.myspace.com/lilred328 Andrea Pulido - http://www.myspace.com/lancerchik315
I know I may not always be the best at posting things up super quickly or at writing back immediately, but I love you all and I really do appreciate all of your support. It's been a crazy ride and there's no signs of stopping anytime soon! Make sure you check out all of the dope cats I mentioned in the article. I'm sure you'll love them as much as I do! Till next time...
Bisous (look it up damn it!)
Mauikai
Leva57: So who is Mauikai?
Mauikai: I guess the answer to this question depends on which day you catch me ;) In all seriousness though, I’m a 24 year old, Cuban-American vocalist, emcee, poet, dancer, actress, writer, activist, dreamer, daughter, lover of the arts, traveller, gypsy and wanna-be super hero all rolled into one! I’ve dedicated my entire life to the performing arts and for the past 5 years I’ve been pushing my way into the independent Hip Hop scene, rocking shows that had crowds as small as two people and as large as 20,000 heads, collaborating with amazing artists I’ve become a fan of along the way, globe-trotting in the name of music, starting a non-profit agency with a group of friends (I Am Hip Hop: My Voice Matters – http://www.myspace.com/MyVoiceMatters) for the incarcerated youth in Miami that’s based on the true school elements and fundamentals of Hip Hop culture and staying active in both the Orlando & Miami communities on a grassroots social and political level. Hip Hop is the reason I wake up everyday and I’ve been blessed to be able to utilize it as the vehicle and voice for my self-expression.
Leva57: You just spent three months on tour, performing all over Europe. I know it was your first time in the EU. What was that experience like and how do you feel about our countries?
Mauikai: Wow, this one’s tough! Actually, nah! It’s easy. I loved my first experience out in Europe. Don’t get me wrong, in the beginning things were really challenging. People always say, “Oh everyone speaks English,” but that’s a lie! Ha ha. The language barrier was probably the first big culture shock I experienced, seeing as the country I touched down in to set off the tour was Germany. It was painful not being able to read a menu and order something familiar on my own. Things weren’t any easier in the Czech Republic. But when I made it to the French part of Switzerland, things became a little clearer. And by then, I was already starting to adjust to the European lifestyle. At first, I was really taken aback and sort of stunned. There were days I’d wake up and forget that I wasn’t in Miami or Orlando anymore. But soon thereafter, I started getting used to my new surroundings. I absolutely loved the architecture and history European countries had. I especially liked the laid back lifestyle in Barcelona. The food there was delicious, not to mention it was nice to draw on my Spanish and communicate in another language other than English. By the time I made it to France, I was in love! Nantes was amazing and I probably had one of my best experiences in that city. I met some amazing artists, Dajla, Benji Blow, Djoss & a band called Tribeqa. After learning a little more about the French government and the way they handle artists, I was really impressed and even more in love with the country. After spending a lot of time in Switzerland (which was absolutely beautiful) and working with one of Lausanne’s funkiest bands, The Fabulous Schublig Band and several dope Hip Hop artists and producers like TigerLily, BFG, Squid, Sisma, Grand Papa Tra, Willy Sunshine and Wikaman, I headed off to Belgium and wow! I loved it there too. It totally reminded me of New York City. It was gritty, fast-paced and super diverse. I enjoyed myself so much in Bruxelles. I’d love to go back and explore it some more. I regret not having made it to Paris, London or Milan. Honestly, while 2.5 months seemed quite long before I left, there just wasn’t enough time to do and see it all. But not to worry, I’m already slated to come back to Europe in March 2009 and trust me, this time I’m going EVERYWHERE :)
Leva57: Tell me about your debut at Hip Hop Kemp.
Mauikai: Where to begin? A little over two years ago, I met an amazing woman & super talented artist, Yarah Bravo who I saw for the first time in my hometown of Miami when she rocked a show with her crew, One Self (w/DJ Vadim & BluRum13). The three of them were really down to Earth and they told me all about how amazing the European music scene was. I was instantly infatuated with the idea of travelling overseas for a few months to experience what they were talking about firsthand. They had talked about a dope festival that happens every year in August in the Czech Republik: Hip Hop Kemp. I did a little research and was hooked straight away! I became obsessed with the thought of performing at HHK & touring Europe, so I began to dream and to dream LARGE! I basically harassed one of the festival’s promoters, almost on a weekly basis, to which I never received a response. When I didn’t hear back from anyone for almost a year, I pretty much gave in and thought to myself, “I guess it just wasn’t meant for me.” Then when I had almost completely forgotten about HHK, I got a Myspace message from Yarah letting me know she was working on an all-female line-up for a stage at this year’s festival. She told me that if I could get myself out to Czech, she’d make sure I was on the bill. I replied instantly & accepted her offer!
Hip Hop Kemp wasn’t quite what I expected it to be. Actually, I couldn’t have prepared in the least bit for what awaited me in Hradec Kralove. I really thought this would be the pinnacle of my trip overseas, and in some ways, it truly was. I got to meet AMAZING women who I’d never seen perform live like Eternia, Chela Simone, Shani D, Miss Flint, Mestiza and Vaitea and I also got to share the stage with sistas I’d come to love and admire for so long like my homegirl Yarah Bravo, Stacy Epps, Desdamona, Invincible, Bahamadia & the legendary Roxanne Shante! In addition to all of the beautiful women I got to see and build with, I was ecstatic to meet some of my all-time favourite emcee’s & catch their live shows! eMC blew me away. The Roots lived up to everything I’d ever heard. Mr. Lif & Akrobatic killed it. Pete Philly & Perquisite made me melt. I was a bit disappointed that Pharoahe Monch fell ill & had to cancel & I really wish that my homeboy Reef the Lost Cauze and his crew hadn’t missed their flights, but I mean, what more could I ask for? This truly was Hip Hop Heaven!
Leva57: How did the We B*Girlz Festival in Berlin compare to Hip Hop Kemp?
Mauikai: My We B*Girlz experience was almost an extension of Hip Hop Kemp. This would be the final show I’d play in Berlin and honestly, by the end of the night I was totally spent! But it was truly magical and I got to reunite with Desdamona, a great friend and artist who had actually billed me on the US version of this festival, B-Girl Be in Minneapolis a few years back. Eternia, who was supposed to co-host the festival stage with Stacy Epps lost her voice & I ended up standing in for her that night. Stacy & I had a great time keeping the crowd entertained in between each of the ladies and it was beautiful to see a packed house for an all female line-up. I mean, not to sound corny or anything, but that night you could really feel the love in the air. The energy was electric and it almost brought me to tears. I’d never seen anything like this back at home.
Leva57: Now I know you've got a lot of YouTube videos documenting your performances from your tour and several albums on your MySpace filled with pictures of you and your friends. How do you feel about communicating with people online?
Mauikai: I love being able to communicate with anyone and everyone through Myspace and YouTube. I don’t think there’s ever been a better time to be an independent artist. With the advent of the digital revolution, we can communicate with people on the other side of the planet with an ease many before me have probably only dreamed of. Seeing as music is a universal language, it’s been really surreal to be able to share my songs and my messages with people who don’t even speak English as their first or second language. I even branched out on this tour and wrote a few songs & hooks in Spanish which you can see on some of the YouTube footage. Let me tell you, people may perceive my love affair with my laptop & the internet as an addiction, but it’s my connection to the world and those who want to find out more about why I do what I do. Not to mention, I think Skype should sponsor my next tour seeing as I used it daily to communicate with friends and family back at home!
Leva57: I've read that you work with children. Tell me about this experience. I'm really curios to know what motivates you.
Mauikai: Earlier this year a group of friends and I started a non-profit organization, I Am Hip Hop: My Voice Matters at the Miami-Dade Regional Juvenile Detention Center. See, for over a year I had been performing as a member of the Unity on the Bay Choir and we had been invited to the MDRJDC to perform for some of the incarcerated youth. This prompted me to begin volunteering at the facility with a friend and choir member who was also pursuing music as a career. I was pretty fed up with the mainstream’s projection of Hip Hop culture and the way Corporate America exploited it to make a quick buck. So my friend Ale & I put our head’s together and started dreaming up a program that would reclaim Hip Hop and teach the younger generations about the elements that helped birth the culture in the first place, then branch out into all areas of general life and survival skills. The program would be created by youth for the youth. And so we rallied a bunch of our friends who were Hip Hop practitioners, had them reach out to everyone and anyone they knew who might be interested and worked up a game plan and a vision for how we saw this working out. Our first session was a great success and we’ve been going strong ever since May 2008. It’s been a real blessing to rediscover Hip Hop with these kids and to see their excitement as they find new talents of their own and share their new found passions with us. While I get great pleasure out of performing and writing music, there is no comparison to the satisfaction I feel when we wrap up a session and the kids say, “Miss, thank you so much for today’s session. It’s really helped me a lot and I when I get out of here, I want to join you guys!” We can complain about the state of Hip Hop all day and debate how we’ve come to this point, but to be able to actually DO something about the direction we’re headed in is much more validating.
Leva57: I'm sure you've got a lot of interesting stories about things that you did while you were on the road, crazy things that happened to you. Want to share one?
Mauikai: I’m always the worst when it comes to thinking up ridiculous things I’ve done or crazy things that have happened to me, but I’ll give it my best shot. My cousin Nessa who I love to death and is probably just as crazy as me quit her job just before I came to Europe, donated a bunch of her belongings and decided she was going to come along for at least a part of the adventure. While she was visiting me in Lausanne, she decided we needed to take a trip. So we ended up picking Barcelona. The trip came just in time, because I had already been in Europe for about a month and was starting to feel a bit worn out. Seeing as this was going to be a little holiday for me away from touring, recording and working, we had three main objectives: 1) we wanted to put our toes in the sand 2) we definitely knew we wanted to buy some Manchego cheese & jamon Serrano & 3) Sangria was a MUST! Well, we ended up going to Barcelona by train and somehow we forgot to reserve a hotel or hostel for our stay, so when we arrived our first mission was finding a decent place to call home for the next few days. We had originally hoped to head off to the beach on day 1, but that was soon forgotten when we realized finding a place would be harder than we thought. But that first day, I am happy to report we checked off objectives 2 & 3. Day 2 was spent grazing through La Boqueria for more delicious food and a bit of sightseeing to Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia, a quick dream stop into Jimmy Choo (hey I’m a sucker for shoes) and a nice stroll down Las Ramblas. On the third and final day of our trip, we still hadn’t made it to the beach and by now it wasn’t looking like we were going to either. We still had seven trips left on our bus pass and decided to hop on any random line to somewhere. As fate would have it, the bus we jumped onto was headed straight for Barcelonetta Beach. Somehow, we had forgotten our bathing suits, but the ocean while stunning, was FREEZING. We walked down to a rather empty part of the beach and after looking at each other without saying a word for about ten minutes, raced to strip down to our tangas and sped straight into Spain’s chilly waters! We laughed and laughed and hung out in the water shivering for about thirty minutes, only to stop laughing when we realized we were going to have to get out and air dry! It was an unexpected adventure to say the least, but hey…MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

Category: Life
So up until this very moment, I have been silent, quietly taking in everything around me. For the first time in my life, I've been experiencing a period of silence. Any one who knows me, and I mean REALLY knows me, knows that I ALWAYS have something to say about EVERYTHING. I have absolutely no problem expressing my views, even if those views are the least popular of the bunch. I am me and I try to live from the philosophy that I am a completely open book with everyone I meet on this journey. You take me or leave me as I am. But as of the last 6 weeks here in Europe, there have been many factors that are challenging me to grow, evolve, learn and adapt. Some really negative experiences that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemies and other AMAZING experiences I never even dreamed I'd have. Magical moments, moments that entirely outweigh any negativity or friction I've faced. These events have created an environment where I've really started to analyze who I am, the person I aspire to be and those traits that I NEVER want to embrace; traits that are limiting of people's dreams, personalities, traits that disrespect us as individuals. I have been raised to respect others and the way they choose to live their lives, no matter how different my life may be from theirs. I have been raised to express and exercise unconditional love, to have an open-mind, never to pass judgment on others simply because we disagree. I have been taught to treat and do unto others what you would will someone to you. For most of my life, I've believed the rest of the world can function this way, until now. Never before have I ever thought, wow, sometimes no matter how much light you radiate, other's shun you and are unwilling to step out of the darkness. I've been learning so much about others out here. But mostly, I've been learning about myself. I've been learning more about the woman I've become, the artist within me, the human being and most importantly my worth. I've always known my worth, but it's always been a challenge to require other's to acknowledge my worth. And I don't say this from a standpoint of ego, simply tuning into my presence and my true purpose. For the most part, I'm so easy going and flexible, people misinterpret that flexibility for naivety. Again, for those who know the life I've lived, you know I'm far from naïve and far from confused. I've known what I've wanted since I realized I was a living, breathing, moving mass of energy. I've worked hard for what I have. I've done things most people consider crazy or absurd. I've lived with money, without money, with real friends and with snakes. I've lost close friends and family way before their time. From darkness to the light…I've survived. I've lived more in my short 23 years than some in their 40's and 50's. I realize now just how important it is to stand my ground, to never volunteer ANY information, because people will use it against you. I've realized how important it is to set your boundaries and never let people disrespect you in any way, because the bottom line is that we teach people how to treat us. And if you don't require a standard of communication from the start, people will look at you fucking crazy when you've had enough. This is when they say how much you've changed, how aggressive you are, how out-of-order you are. And that's bullshit. That's your own fault for not letting people see all of you from jump. Today I make a vow to be myself, always. I think I've focused so much on being liked and not wanting to hurt people's feelings that I've accepted less than what anyone back at home would consider acceptable. When people speak to you, they don't care how they express it or worry about how you will feel. They just express themselves and from now on, I will take that into account. Life is too short to be bitter or angry. Life is temporary and tomorrow's not promised. I refuse to be affected by negativity and people who want to change me, "fix" me or make me something I'm not. This is Mauikai. Love me or leave me. If you disagree with me, that's cool. Let's discuss it. You and me. Let's be adults. No alterations accepted :) Love from the land of chocolate, cheese and freeze!

lead by example...take the road less traveled...stand up for what you believe in...quit your dead end job...love unconditionally...stay true to yourself...fuck you that's for my ego, i love you that's personal...as if we existed...regardless of how it's said, the outcome's always loving you...no more heroes...
if any of these things strike a chord in side of you, it's probably cause you've heard it before. it's probably because these are things you want to say or do or have said and done or have heard people say is difficult to do. if any of these phrases change something inside of you, if they "click", if you have these convictions, then bottom line...it's probably because you know the sol.illaquists of sound ;)
and if you know anything about me, you know that s.o.s. are fam'lee to me. they've been in my corner since day one. from the lowest of my lows to celebrating the successes i've enjoyed to date, they've been some of the realist people i've ever met in my life, and i count my blessings everyday to know them and have their support.
i remember the excitement i felt when their first record, as if we existed, dropped in stores nation wide. i was so overwhelmed with happiness, like a dream was being realized and i had the privileged of watching it all go down. i traveled to nyc with my homegirl & partner in hustle, alex vega to catch them on their "quit your dead end job" tour at the knitting factory. i cried so much at the end of that show. i still remember it like it was yesterday. i was so proud for what they'd accomplished, for what they stood for, to see them bring along fam, x:144 and sps and to be rocking such amazing shows. now the rest of the world could discover how amazing these people were, the way i had a few years back.
so, it's natural that now, as they're preparing to release their second album, no more heroes, on anti-/epitaph records that i'd want to share something amazing with you. see the sol.illaquists of sound are no ordinary hip hop group. they're not your typical musicians, by any measure of the word. they're activists, they're hustlers, they're revolutionaries, they're amazing people and they're true to themeselves. once you know them, you'll never question their intent, their motives, their stance on anything. i know they were all huge j-dilla fans and for their first single they teamed up with chali 2na of jurrassic 5, j-live & dilla's mom. you can download the tune now and rest assured that 100% of the funds raised are going to dilla's mom. i'd elaborate but i think divinci said it best...so read more below, donate, add the banner & buy the album when it drops!
peace. love. & hip hop from the land of chocolate & cheese!
Maui
The new single, "Death of The Muse", is available as a download HERE for a minimum donation of $2 with absolutely 100% of the proceeds going directly to Ms. Maureen Yancey a/k/a Ma Dukes (J Dilla's Mom). You are encouraged to donate more than the minimum by upping the quantity in your shopping cart before checking out. The track features J-Live, Chali 2na (of Jurassic 5), as well as Ma Dukes herself.
Being that J Dilla was a musical hero of mine, we chose to pay tribute to him in song for the new album. In addition, having learned of the troubles that his mother has endured (not only during the time of Dilla's illness but also since his passing) with her own health, living situation, and estrangement with the executors of Dilla's estate, we decided to pay tribute to her as well.. in action.

so much to say & so much to do… but where to begin??? well for starters, i put up a new track, daydream (i do) produced by a super fresh uk producer stekeyz (big ups love! check him out @ www.myspace.com/stekeyz)…but it'll only be up today, august 1st as a little peak into where i've been this year. if you missed it, don't feel disappointed. i'll be rocking it all over europe this summer/fall on tour!
which leads me to the countdown. its officially begun! 16 days from now, another long time dream of mine will have been realized, when i touch down in berlin, germany for the first stop on my tour through europe. i've been blabbing on about this for a hot minute, but now it's really happening. thanks to some big dreamers (see myspace.com/bgirlunity), two super fresh booking agents (peep myspace.com/diapazona) & a boat-load of friends and fam'lee who have supported me in all of my crazy adventures…i'm getting to rock the mic all over europe and play with some of my favorite & most respected cats in the world (the roots, pharaoh monch, emc aka masta ace + strick + wordsworth + punchline, pete philly and perquisite, bahamadia, roxanne shante, stacy epps, dj nu-mark, the coup + too many more to mention)!!! so, i hope all my hip hop heads overseas are ready…cause i am!!! big ups to the incredible yarah bravo, djenan & manon, soul sista stef, yvonne, maria, jelka & karin! see you real soon ;)
and last but definitely not least…i want to leave you with something so dear to me, there aren't enough words to describe how i feel. at the top of the year, i decided that it was time for me to take what i write about in my poetry and my music and go back to remember i have to live my beliefs everyday. this led me to volunteer with habitat for humanity, which was amazing. i built a house with some of my uotb fam & jacqueline francois (the home owner). she was so overjoyed at her own dream coming true. it was overwhelming. then a month later, i was invited with the uotb choir to perform for a group of kids at the miami-dade regional juvenile justice center. that singular experience would forever change my life. looking at the sea of faces in the detention center's gym, i fell in love. my heart string's tugged and i was hooked. I started volunteering there on a regular basis with another organization & decided what these kids needed were people who understood their culture, lived their culture, walked a day, a week, a month, a year in their shoes who could be the living proof that real change is possible. i can't take credit for conceptualizing this organization, because i truly believe it was something bigger than me that put things in motion. long story short, the iahh program launched in may with the support of so many of my friends & hip hop fam and recently we were blessed with the support of local protectors of the culture: chef & relz of randumbmiami.com. they came through our last session to see for themselves what iahh is all about. these ladies really represented & i want to take the time to share what came of their visit with you. take a sec & check the piece they wrote by clicking on the pic below!

all in all…i don't know what the future holds, but i sure am grateful & ready! hope you are too. stay tuned for words from the road. keep daydreaming & reaching for the stars…
peace. love & hip hop…

Hi! Salduos! Bonjour! Hallo! Ciao! Oi! Hei! Aloha! and all that good stuff ;)
I don't have a ton of time to write, so I'm gonna make it quick. I've been counting down the days till I head out to Europe for the next two and half months for a ridiculous tour and of course a crazy adventure! I wanted to let everyone know about the two biggest shows I'm rocking overseas (one of which I wrote about not too long ago…Hip Hop Kemp).
The first festival I'm performing at will be HHK in the Czech Republic. The line up is nasty!!! Here's a few to start (if your curiosity is peaked, check the official site at: http://www.hiphopkemp.cz/lineup/) THE ROOTS ATMOSPHERE + BROTHER ALI PHAROAHE MONCH EMC (MASTA ACE, STRICK, PUNCHLINE, WORDSWORTH) MR.LIF & AKROBATIK AND A WHOLE LOT MORE!!!! Last year's HHK had over 20,000 heads. Who knows what this year has in store, but I know it's gonna be dope, dope, dope!!! And not to mention, this year's HHK will be totally different with the addition of the first ever all female stage – U.N.I.T.Y. (thanks to the fresh 5 better known as the lovely Little Ms. B, Soul Sista Stef, Yvonne, Ms. Maria & Karin + Jelka) Peep the U.N.I.T.Y. myspace page on my top friends!!! And spread the word :) The second festival that I'm rocking is the We B*Girlz Festival in Berlin. I'll be out there for the grand finale as well as a couple of stops on the We B*Girlz Tour. The illest shit about this festival is that the finale is going to be streamed live!! Yup, that means all my people state-side can catch the show too :) You won't wanna miss this. Performances include: Roxanne Shanté, Bahamadia, Invincible, Eternia, Shania, Stacy Epps, Yarah, DJ Josie, MC Pyranja, Sookee, Jeneez, Too Funk Sistaz, She-Raw, DJ Freshfluke and yours truly 8 -) Now remember that if you want to tune in, this is going down in Berlin, Germany. So all you East Coast cats, that's local time + 6hrs. West Coast = local time + 9hrs. Hope you'll take advantage of this dope service! We B*Girlz festival in Berlin will be streamed LIVE on ligx. de and b-girlz-berlin. com Love you all and I hope to fill you in a little more in a few. Till then, hold on tight. It's gonna be a looooooooooooong ride =) Love. Life & Hip Hop! ♥ Mauikai ♥

It still amazes me how perfectly life unfolds before my eyes. It's funny, because when I was a little girl, I used to dream about what my life would be like when I "made it" and how my world would look and feel and sound and taste like. Needless to say, it's turned out totally different than I ever could have imagined. See...what I meant to say is that it's more beautiful and magnificent than I ever dreamt it would be.
I know there must be many who laugh at this writing and wonder how I can say that I've "made it" but I assure you that in my heart, I really feel like I've already arrived. I guess it's because over the past few months or few years really, so many dreams have come true, so many ideas that were just up in my head have manifested right before my very eyes. In fact, there are a million things I never even thought of, that have landed in my lap as if the universe has just opened up and rained down blessings in my life.
Among them, friendships, memories, opportunities and angels that have helped mold and shape my path to living my passion. I can't explain how anything has happend, because I really don't think one can analytically break down the sequence of events that leads us to happiness. I just know that all along, my family (blood related and otherwise) has continued to support my dreams and my movements in the direction of the bright light that's captivated my entire life....music and performance, connection and an exchange of dialogue with people from all walks of life, service in the highest form.
I've felt and still do feel so blessed for the amazing relationships that have been forged in my life, in all areas of my life. All deep and meaningful, contributing so much more than anyone could suspect. I love and appreciate EVERY experience I've had over the last 23 years and I make it a point everyday to remind myself that the memories of the past, the beauty of the present and the glimpses of the future are all a part of the fabric that make me who I am. I know deep down that my failures and mistakes do not define me, nor do my successes or achievements. I'm not my career or my relationships, my family or my music. I Am and that's all that matters.
At the end of the day, all I want to do is to continue expressing my eternal gratitude to everyone who's been and IS a part of my life. Without you, without your contribution of love and energy and support...this would all be worthless. I know I don't have to ramble off a list of names to acknowledge who you are. I promise to honor and acknowledge your presence in my life by doing what I love to do...for the rest of my life! And I hope you find inspiration to do the same, because life is too beautiful and too magical to let it pass us by.I love you...from the bottom of my heart...I thank you...and I am so happy for YOU...for ME...for US!

SO FAR...
2008 has proven to be an AMAZING year!!! I don't know about you guys, but ever since I can remember, I used to make LISTS UPON LISTS UPON LISTS of things I wanted to do and dreams I wanted to accomplish. The difference is that back when I was making all those lists, somewhere way down deep, I wasn't sure if they'd ever really get checked off. It's not to say that I didn't believe in myself, but it was just fun to dream everything up and not have to worry about reality. It seems those days are long gone, because ever since I rung in the new year, things I had totally forgotten about, goals I set years ago began swarming into my life…ALL AT ONCE!
This year has been absolutely unreal & sometimes I just sit back in awe and ask myself, "Is this really my life???" What's crazier is that I can actually say, yes! It is! So that said, I wanted to share some of the coolest things that have happened to me in '08 and send you all my love and encouragement to "dream bigger than you can imagine. Ask for answers and believe you can have them. Don't get caught up in the fear of confusion. Follow your heart and believe you can do ANYTHING!"
HIP HOP KEMP

It all started with a story I talked about in my previous blog. But let's recap with some new details ;)
A few year back my homegirl A Lovely (myspace.com/alboogie360) put me on to this London outfit, One Self (myspace.com/0neself). The crew was 2 parts MC (Yarah Bravo & BluRum13) one part DJ/Producer (DJ Vadim). She had seen them in NY and said they were touring and would be making a stop in my hometown, Miami. Now back then, I was still living in Orlando, but that was still only a 3.5 hour drive, so I was definitely down to make a trip home & catch them at Lincoln Road's Laundry Bar.
The show was nothing short of phenomenal. The crew (which was minus one MC that night) was really down to earth and we had time to grab a bite to eat before the show. Long story short, that night would be the beginning of amazing things to come. In talking with both Yarah & Vadim about life overseas, they mentioned this super fresh Hip Hop festival. In their words, the largest European Hip Hop festival of the year aka Hip Hop Kemp. When I got a chance, I looked it up and was blown away by the pictures of 20k people coming together to celebrate this culture. The line up was ridiculous and HHK was all I could think about.
Over the next two years, I emailed the promoters almost non-stop, tried reaching out through Myspace. You name it, I tried it. Trust me, I'm very persistent and this was no exception. As you can imagine, the promoters wanted to book me right away because I'm sooooo FAMOUS….HAHAHA (I couldn't even keep a straight face writing that, lol). Well yeah, they were less than interested in me and never even replied to my fruitless emails. Now I could on and on recounting exactly how I got on FINALLY this year, but that'd be kinda repetitive for those who read my last blog…so if you don't know…GO READ IT! =) And once again, big ups to my sista in rhyme: Yarah Bravo! (myspace.com/YarahBravo) This woman is taking over the universe. Catch her if you can!
Now as a result of my being part of HHK ,the amazing Little Ms. B and her forever fresh homegirls Karin of Subotage and Sista Stef it looks like I've also made it to this year's We*B*Girlz Festival in Berlin, Germany. You see, the entire month of August in Berlin is exploding with all kinds of exciting Hip Hop events featuring talented females doing what they love! It's too much info to go into detail, but make sure you drop by http://b-girlz-berlin.com/ for the full on 411! Oh yeah, and it's crazy…I never ever thought I'd be on MTV, but check it out: http://www.mtv.de/article/19188815. >
Okay, okay. So maybe it's not about me specifically, but they do mention my name with some AMAZING women I really respect and feel blessed to share a stage with this year! =) Tried to translate the German to English….not very successful, but I have a feeling that what's written here: http://b-girlz-berlin.com/grand-finale/ is about the same, so enjoy!
To everyone I love, I've met on my journey & those whose paths will cross with mine this year…THANK YOU for all of your love & support. I know that nothing is coincidence and that EVERYTHING happens for a reason. There's a lot going on in my world right now and I don't pretend to be great at keeping up with all of your lives, but know that just because we don't talk all of the time or see each other everyday, I couldn't do what I do without you & it would mean nothing to keep reaching for the stars without you to share it with! Keep checking back & know I love you all!
With eternal gratitude…
