I am realizing there may be confusion with respect to which of these albums is coming out next.
Somehow my creative visualization process for Thinking Place got hijacked by songs I began writing this summer while hanging out in Bernal Heights.
I started writing the piano hooks behind TP a good couple of years ago, and since then have grown obsessed with producing them in my head...and laying out a final song order.  Then one day in June while in Oakland, I'd had enough.  I decided that I was going to make this record, come hell or high water.  Then of course, I ended up in Bernal Heights.  The circumstances were bizarre, and yet, a complete blessing.
In a way, I forged a new bond with San Francisco, from a different vantage point this time.  I had new friends, I was in a new environment (filled with butterflies and flowers) and every day felt like a dream.
I turned back to guitar...which I hadn't really given focus to since several years ago (the divorce was never final).  Part of this turning back, of course, was that it had become much easier for me to play than piano.  So in July I wrote my first song for DoB, then another and another, and pretty soon I had a whole album.
While TP (and to a certain extent Quixotic Beetz) has that upbeat piano driven ballady sound, DoB is low fi, acoustic, quieter.  It also has this bluegrass/country/folk influence going on.  So I decided to round up a few country-ish songs I wrote long ago and include them on the record, too.
This doesn't answer your question about which is coming out first.
Well, it's Dreams of Bernal.
My upcoming shows in SF and LA will feature songs from DoB.
Stay tuned for record release info and all that fun stuff.
thanks for reading :)

I told a lot of people about prospective plans for L.A., but I am putting on the brakes and spending some time in the east bay for the meantime.  On Friday I move into a temporary address in Oakland.  I am extemely excited about it.

Lots of people have asked about what I'm doing with music lately.  Well.  You will just have to wait and see what happens.  Because I could talk the talk but I'd rather walk the walk.  Mainly my focus is on getting the Quixotic Beetz e.p. into a more suitable gown (better cd packaging and promotion).  Then will come developments on the next album.  All the while I will be playing out.  If you're not on my email list already, hit me up - then you'll be the first to hear about my next show.

I finished lyrics to a song called "key largo" that will be on the next record.

Peace,
Melanie

hey.
i am sitting in a loud computer lab. trying to concentrate.
was in L.A. for 9 days, returned to SF on thursday.  rented a beautiful place in Studio City, soaked in much needed sunshine and got a little taste of what it might be like to live in L.A.  made my debut there by playing at an open mic at a restaurant called Studio City Cafe.  everyone clapped after I said hey, I'm from SF and I'm totally new here.  the host was cool enough to lend me a guitar.  again, it was so nice to be able to play Ocean Door without any pain.  someone even complimented me on my piano playing.  It's definitely nice to have come this far in my arm recovery and I'm not looking back.
I wonder if the guys in here are playing wow or something....
for awhile now I have been silently cultivating the vision for my next album.  i keep thinking of the elementary school i attended, which was a private Catholic school called Our Lady of Victory (before the buccaneer days, Shane).  i keep thinking of these things I wore called coolats and hidden cloak rooms behind chalkboards.  wearing rain boots, walking through puddles, seeing the vastness of the sky in the reflection - wondering if that's where vanessa carlton got her lyric for that hit song.  mostly though what comes up in these memories is a certain blankness.  innocence opening to creativity.  fun with markers and a blank page. the kind with no lines.  also -- heads up 7 up.
there are orgasmic sounds emanating from this computer lab and lots of swearing  :/

Heading down the coast tomorrow to visit Grandma.  Had a great week with two shows:  Ireland 32's on Wednesday and Cafe International on Friday.  Very very very very much looking forward to playing lots of shows ASAP.  I've kept the tendinitis enough at bay to be able to play Ocean Door on Friday night.  I'm very very happy about this.  I never imagined how victorious I would feel playing a song I've played effortlessly for 2.5 years.

I want to thank my close friends and loyal supporters who came out to one or both shows last week.  It really means such a great deal to me...especially considering that I've been away from the scene for six months.  THANK YOU !!!

Since first coming down with the big T I've actually come up with a lot of new material.  These three sound collages are the first that come to mind.  These are not official titles or anything:

1. what if it were possible to erase everything that happened before today
2. I've seen bluer friends than I
3. tell me how the wind blows/ honorable petal (I have to have to have to and will will will finish this song soon)
oh yeah and:
4. tell me which girl I am (on guitar)

YES.

With a new President in the wings, I should be happy.  But on a personal level, I am a bit bummed out, because tendinitis has prevented me from making every important communication with fans, as well as those who are ready to help get my record distributed, release party and all.  I'm talking about email.  I can only type for short spurts, same with piano playing.  It has been extremely frustrating, and I oscillate between dejectedness, despondence and dr pepper as the days and weeks go by.  I really have no idea how long it is going to take me to heal before I can resume everything I am supposed to do.

If you REALLY want a copy of Quixotic (I have a box of 50 copies right here), you better let me know.  Send me a message.  Let me know you're out there.  My distribution team is busy with stretches, tennis balls, therabands and little squishy balls.  and acupuncture.

So this is why I have been out of touch, and hopefully you will understand.  Feel free to say hi, we would love that.

Hi guys,

I am still approaching the finish line of the release of my ep, Quixotic Beetz, but first there are a few hills ahead, and a pretty pond with some koy.  But before you know it, QB will descend upon you, wearing deliciously soft wings.  And at that moment I just might wake up from a very long slumber.  Patience is the key.

I had a show in Stockton last weekend that was a great experience, despite my fever, which tried desperately to not be contagious.  Everyone I met was great and I felt totally at home.  Thanks again to the Gitanos, Sandra D and Marirose.  And who could forget the Gypsies?

On September 6 I will embark on my first trip outside of the US.  I'll be spending one week in Ireland and one week in England and will play just a few shows.  We'll see if the fantasy of stealing away to Paris for one night comes true.  Shall I stick with a carefully laid out itinerary and keep the budget in check or throw in a spicy adventure?

With the release of Quixotic Beetz swiftly approaching, I thought I would give you a sneak peek of one of my favorite tracks on the record, the Rest.  I hope you enjoy listening as much as I've enjoyed creating it.
