"Lest you think we’re going soft here at The Deli, we’re picking an album this September from a band whose name itself is a threat: We’ll Go Machete. They picked the phrase from one of the signature rants of Lester Bangs, the legendary rock critic and cough syrup addict. ("We are jungle fever, beri-beri, Maus Maus ravenous for each other after which we'll go machete and bar-bee-cue us some missionaries!" -Lester Bangs, All My Friends Are Hermits)

In honor of their muse, we’ve listened to their work under heavy sedation, and even so impaired, they bring that machete straight through the haze: their s/t EP is six songs with no murmuring or hesitation about them. They’re scorching the earth like Sherman, burning a straight line through our usual sad bastard proclivities.
“Red Maddens the Bull” launches the assault; with its jagged rhythm and shouted chorus, it establishes the breathless momentum of the EP. Listening to this record is like getting hooked by a passing speedboat. There you were, contemplating infinity on the shore, and then you were uprooted and dragged pell-mell screaming through the water, at unsafe speeds in a spinning blur of sun and wake. And a good time is had by all.

WGM, a foursome, has some of the soaring, throwback-rock vocal tendencies of the Mars Volta, but not that band’s kaleidoscopic approach: We’ll Go Machete is too straight-ahead to be confused with MV. Their major touchstone is, instead, the early-nineties Dischord Records take on hardcore, where melody is no sin, but every song is whittled to the bone and moving fast. Lead singer Paul Warner often forgoes the acrobatic singing in favor of a more incantatory approach, rabble-rousing like de la Rocha.

It’s worth singling out “Thatch” with its atmosphere of twitchy, restless danger; the song is like some strange man in the dark corner of a bar who you shouldn’t even make eye contact with.

Tricky to separate oneself working in this fast aggro area of music, but We’ll Go Machete throw all doubts quickly to the side. It’s to be applauded. Now let’s go chop something down."

"We'll Go Machete have unleashed a very promising self-titled debut EP. It's hard to find bands doing this sound, but it's even harder to find ones doing a good impression of it." 3.5/5 Full Review

"Solid, intelligent, hard-hitting throwback rock... Overall, the album is very good. For hard rocky post-hardcore, it’s one of the better albums I’ve come across this year so far. " Full Review

( spanish review translated through Babelfish )

"Ah, yes, the Post-Hardcore. Those guitars that intercross in angular contorsiones, those rates that they invite to an heated one and fractured dance, those voices declamatorias, crude but that never lose of certain view melodic freshness. And, by on all the things, that skillful combination of intellectuality and nerve rocker. We'll Go Machete is a young native band of Texas, but they could well have been part of the catalogue of Dischord of half-full of noventas. If we spoke of influences, also it is necessary to mention to pop like Quicksand and Drive Like Jehu, but of no way they create that this is a cheap copy nor nothing of the sort. Freshness is the key word. The six songs presented/displayed here own groove contagious propped up by riffs imaginative, variant rythmical and vocal melodies between the sobriety and break touching. Somehow, we spoke of a sort that does not seem to age, since, without leaving the parameters before mentioned, the quartet sounds as present as the one that more. And more when we spoke of so round compositions. Melodies try irresistible and jumping of “Number 12”, joined slowness of “Archibald” (the son that Fugazi and Helmet never had), the dissonant tension of “The Old Beast Will Crumble” (almost the Jesus Lizard Washingtoneado), the sweaty difficult energy and riffs of “Thatch” and “Red Maddens the Bull” and the rhythmic emotional tidal wave of “All At Sea” if they do not create to me. By all means, nor it is necessary to clarify that one is one of my favorite sorts and that, when it is done with similar compositional and interpretative level, to me becomes absolutely irresistible. It only is to wait for with anxieties a next long duration."

"And always beneficial for bands of this nature is a crisp recording that emphasizes warm, natural tones and a mix that allows every element its own space – neither too polished nor too raw, etc. It's all quite well done, and there really is an authentic "early-90's" type of sound to the aesthetic of the songwriting that should absolutely hit the spot for longtime fans of the aforementioned bands/labels searching for new sources of those classic sounds. I'll definitely be looking forward to hearing more from these cats…"

"this foursome out of austin,tx warm the cockles of my heart...taking me back to a more simple time of driving aimlessly with a car full of friends while listening to mix tapes that you put together...and looking around and seeing only looks of confusion on the faces of everyone because apparently what was playing wasn't hard enough or didn't make any sense to them" - ipecaac

"When you think of the Austin TX sound, you probably don't think of early 90's groups like Drive Like Jehu, Fugazi, or Quicksand but that is exactly the type of style you get with We'll Go Machete. The quartets pulsating and pounding drive comes at you full steam in each of the EP's six tracks and never lets up its assault. We'll Go Machete incorporates hard riffs that remind me of Helmet while lead vocalist Paul Warner guides each track with his commanding call out vocals. The self-titled EP is an excellent beginning to hopefully a stellar LP and more exposure for the band." - 3.5/5, Sam DaMatt, The Fire Note

"With the exception of Jaguar Love there aren't a lot of bands out there who are currently making no-excuses, kick-your-head-in, hardcore rock with any semblance of intelligence.  Just when you thought all hope was lost along comes Austin, TX four-piece We'll Go Machete and their self-titled EP.

The EP is really a throwback to the early '90s emotion hardcore punk (the GOOD kind of Emo) that was revolutionized by groups like Fugazi, Quicksand, Jesus Lizard, and Jawbox..."
