The Wave Pictures: Time Out Music Preview:
It's a common complaint these days that the music biz doesn't give young bands enough time to fully gestate and develop their sound before strip-mining their musical assets. In this case, the fact that The Wave Pictures are only now coming to prominence is testament to the band's own long-eared jerboa-like shyness. Although The Wave Pics have only recently released their first proper single, they're not really a new band, having been playing together in various incarnations since 1998. Even then, most of these have been as backing for less camera-shy outfits as Herman Düne and Jeffrey Lewis. Their forthcoming Moshi Moshi LP, ostensibly their debut, is in fact their sixth (or so) album, the others having been recorded on CD-R and sold at gigs, apart from 2006's 'Sophie', which was roundly ignored due to being on the little-heard-of Smoking Gun label. Oopsie – our bad.

Still, this apparent reticence to hop into the public eye belies The Wave Pictures' extraordinary musical and lyrical confidence. Although the two bands hardly sound alike, the Wave Pics have something in common with Scots rockers 1990s, an unselfconsciousness which comes with having been around the block a few times without any of the residents noticing. The Wave Pictures combine sounds because they fit together rather than to serve a particular agenda. Their sound is essentially a stripped-back rock 'n' roll owing debts of various denominations to Chuck Berry, Dick Dale and Jonathan Richman. Their lyrics are clever and witty without being annoying or smug, and they tell generally quite charming stories with lots of emotive lyrical imagery which sound confessional even though they're just made up.

The Wave Pictures' recent four week residency at the George Tavern won them an army (or at least guerilla cell) of swooning fans, and each show saw the band switch up the set, play new material, experiment with the old and generally charm the crowd with their ramshackle aceness. It won't be long before they're playing venues significantly more sizeable than this.

Sorry, this is more than a bit late....

Ten top tunes of 2007 that I've enjoyed playing out and appear to have been enjoyed on the MiMB dance floor...

1 EBONY BONES! – We Know All About U! (7" white label)

http://www.myspace.com/ebonybones

Star of the very first MiMB presents…  This teaser from The Guardian tipped for 2008 band has all the right elements to move our dance floor at any time and was even picked up by Radio 1's Zane Lowe as his hottest record of the week.

Buy from Rough Trade

1 Bishi - Never Seen Your Face (Gryphon)

http://www.myspace.com/bishimusic

Her album 'Nights at the Circus' is an absolute masterpiece.  It's amazing how in to 3 minutes Bishi can combine her original Ravi Shanker Eastern influences, a huge dollop of pop and disco beats.

Some fantastic remixes from Jonjo and Adam Sky.

Buy from Rough Trade

3 M.I.A. – Paper Planes (or XR2 or Hussle or Boys) (XL)

www.miauk.com

Who knew you could sample The Clash and make it sound this beautiful.  Hands in the air moments guaranteed thanks to the noise effects in the chorus.  The remix featuring up and coming Rye Rye and Afrikan Boy is hot too.

Buy Kala from Amazon

4 thecocknbullkid – There's a Mother In Our Bed (forthcoming)

http://www.myspace.com/thecocknbullkid

Another star of the very first MiMB.  Witty lyrics and a catchy beat produced by Stu Ramsay.  Finally getting a release in early March.  Buy it!

5 The Real Heat – Hearts Not Innit (Pure Groove Digital/7Digital)

http://www.myspace.com/therealheat

Rightfully applauded by the NME (Suki was even on their cool list), the easy sing along chorus line of "fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck" is hard to resist.  Their top performance at MiMB presents… in December was the magnificent cherry atop my birthday celebrations.

Download from 7digital

6 Christina K – I Got a Boyfriend (unreleased)

http://www.myspace.com/christinakmusic

Since Christina sent me this track earlier this year there's hardly been a single set that I haven't played it in.  Its Salt 'n Pepa sample makes it instantly danceable and every time I've played it a couple of people always come up and ask who it is.

7 Rihanna – Umbrella (Def Jam)

www.rihannanow.com

Worldwide biggest selling single of 2007 and 9th most successful single in the past 10 years.  It's hard to deny really.  I like the remix featuring Lil Mama.

Buy from Amazon

8 Timbaland ft Keri Hilson – The Way I Are (Blackground)

www.timbalandmusic.com

Another of the year's biggest pop hits and understandably so.  Crookers did an excellent remix!

www.myspace.com/crookers

Buy from Amazon

9 Black Kids – I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You (self released)

www.blackkidsmusic.com

They gave this away free!  FREE!  Insane.  This song is almost perfection.

10 T2 featuring Jodie – Heartbroken (AATW)

http://www.myspace.com/t2musicbassline

Some fantastic bassline from Leeds.  Big on the underground for ages, good to see it cross over.

Download from AATW

Jonny's of course would be rather different....

Music Is My Boyfriend
London

We can think of many reasons why music'd be a rubbish boyfriend - it wouldn't take you out for dinner for starters, and sloppy-snogging with plugged-in hi-fis could be nigh on life-threatening. But trash pop and sleaze rock DJs Neil and Jonny, the promoters of this night, named after a song by perv pop troupe and golden shower enthusiasts the Hidden Cameras, are evidently going steady with music for all the right reasons. You'd get songs aplenty written about you, you'd always have something to dance to and there'd be a shed load of trendy band shirts at your every beck and call. Amorous musical performances will be provided by Anat Ben David (Chicks On Speed) and the never-knowingly over-clothed Jean Genet, who'll both be proffering the type of electric disco sex punk your mother never warned you about, but damn well should have done.

Gay Against You tour diary:

kilburn:
this was a wicked show. we got super nice vegan buffet and possibly ate too much, then performed in a giant pit / assumed spitting gallery. there were lots of people there and they all seemed friendly and eager to join in. hundreds tens and units were bouncy fun, even if there were too many of them. nazi experiments in colours broke all his shit and sang into metal paddles. angus's stand in guitar refused to stay in tune but otherwise did an excellent job.

thanks very much to:
