The Swallows

Late September, when the swallows fly away,
days are shorter, nights are colder, so they don't stay.
Lining up on the telephone wire, one by one,
'til something in the air tells them, and they're gone...
They fly away so fast,
and it means that our summer has passed,
for another year.

Cross the ocean, over the Pyrenees, and down the Nile.
they won't be seeing me for a while.
Reaching their destination, one by one,
and now the people of Capetown, can hear their song.
They fly away so fast,
and it means that our summer has passed,
for another year.

When the leaves reappear, on the trees,
the days get longer, and i'm pining for a summer sea breeze.
Over the horizon they come in numbers,
waking the country from its slumber.
They fly away so fast,
and the summer is here at last,
for another year.

Back again, and we hope they've escaped the rain,
but time it flies, and so do they, once again.
Lining up on the telephone wire, brings a tear to my eye,
and then they're gone.  And only they know why...
They fly away so fast,
and it means that our summer has passed,
for another year.

The day that I stop loving you...
is the day that the swallows never come back home.
An eternal Winter, on my own...

...but the Swallows always come back home.

Ok, so way too cheesy, but aren't we allowed to be cheesy now and again?

bring back the sunshine...

isnt it a shame, that the sunshine don't last?
isnt it a shame that darkness comes so fast?
the sun shining can lighten my day,
but in the dark i cant see my way.
bring back the sunshine between you and i,
so these winter nights stop making me cry.
bring back the sunshine between you and i

I want your sunbeam eyes to see me,
I want your loving heart to free me,
I want my arms to hold you,
and my words to unfold you...
bring back the sunshine between you and i,
so these winter nights stop making me cry.
bring back the sunshine between you and i

like a long hot summers day,
I want us to blossom in the way,
the way we did in autumn just gone,
before the winter frost came along...
bring back the sunshine between you and i,
so these winter nights stop making me cry.
bring back the sunshine between you and i

I hope it lasts like the simmer dim,
and we never see the darkness coming in,
to see you again will be a test,
but in my arms, you were best.
bring back the sunshine between you and i,
so these winter nights stop making me cry.
bring back the sunshine between you and i

I realised that there are lots of traditional songs about women's broken hearts and how men are evil, such as Silver Dagger......so I wrote this last night....

I Was Killed by Love

well whiskey killed poor daddy-o,
sent him to his grave,
40 hard years of drinking,
his life could not be saved,

and now, just like my daddy-o,
i'm headin' for the heaven above,
well there's health warnings on whiskey,
but there ain't no warning on love.

well I,
found a lady who was like an angel,
a n'er there was a lady so fine,
but she left me waitin' and she, kept me waitin'
and now I die 1000 times...inside.

well a bullet killed poor johnny-o,
he was a soldier in the war,
his wife she laments for him,
and she won't see him anymore.

and now, just like poor johnny-o,
i'm headin' for the heaven above,
there's a lot of bravery in going to war,
but there's none when falling in love.

well I,
found a lady who was like an angel,
a n'er there was a lady so fine,
but she left me waitin' and she, kept me waitin'
and now I die 1000 times...inside.

Well tommy was killed by Leviathan,
while he was out fishing one night,
a wave struck the ship, and he was tossed away,
before he could put up a fight.

and now, just like poor tommy-o,
im headin' for the heaven above,
Leviathan was a ruthless creature,
but so are the women we love.

well I,
found a lady who was like an angel,
a n'er there was a lady so fine,
but she left me waitin' and she, kept me waitin'
and now I die 1000 times...inside.

Another returnee to the Drystone this year and I've no doubt I will have more of his work up on here too. What can I say about Rob that hasn't been said by others; not much I'm sure, the obvious things are that Rob is a Cumbrian Nick Drake, or a Tim Buckley in that he writes intelligent songs and performs them with passion and sensitivity as they did. But I never like drawing such similes to performers. Rob is Rob not Nick or Tim his songs and voice are his own and I'm sure it's a voice that one day the world will enjoy. But not too soon so those of you who live here in North West Cumbria can come and see one of our own before he's off on the world stage, he is one of the lynch pins of my open mic sessions at The Spinners Arms in Cummersdale being such a success and I must also mention his own venue The Number 15 Cafe in Penrith where Rob programs a fantastic line up over the year. Go there and see what I mean. BTW The menu is also bloody amazing and they probably serve the HOTTEST cups of coffee on the planet. Oh yeah, the song is "Things Get Washed Away"

what a nice man..

Cheers Alan!!

Cast Away My Heart

If I had a ship, would u be the captain of it? and make sure no pirates rob it, if I had a ship,

If I had a ship, I would sail the seven seas, and every island that I seize, is for you.

If I had a ship, would you be the mutineer? And revolt without a fear, on my ship.

If I had a ship, I would sail across the pond, and very far beyond, the river.

If I had a ship, I would be a buccaneer, and I would sail far and near, on my ship,

If I had a ship, I'd have my treasure in a heap, but the only thing I'd keep, is you.

If I sank my ship, and you knew I couldn't swim, would you hastily jump in, to save me?

If I sank my ship, and I was marooned upon the shore, would you stay forever more, with me?

If my heart was a ship, you're the ocean that would sink it, even though you'd never think it, I do.

But you are the island, where I will get washed up, but at least I will wake up, next to you.

Cast away, cast away,

Cast away my heart, and bury me at sea....

Local musician Rob Heron launched his new CD, 'Korsa Floden', at a lively and intimate event at No˚ 15, Penrith on Thursday 20th March. Rob played a series of songs from his new album, the name of which is inspired by his time touring Sweden and translates to 'Cross The River', the title of one of his more wistful songs. His set was also peppered with old favourites such as 'Answers' and a heartfelt cover of 'Hit The Road Jack'. There is a marked difference from his last album and his matured style can be clearly heard in his smoother vocals and more relaxed guitar playing. This new approach was evidenced in his original and entertaining medleys at the end of some of his songs, which generated warm, appreciative smiles from the audience, who also gave him a huge applause at the end.
Also playing was Oli Deakin in what he called a 'homecoming gig'. He played a crisper style of acoustic indie rock and favourably commented on the gig, appearing to regret the fact that there were no such events when he lived in the area. Oli has also recorded a CD and although he still has many details such as the title to confirm, he is making deals with two major record labels and plans the release the CD very soon. At times throughout the night, the voices of the crowd rose considerably higher than the music itself although this may have indicated the success of both performers in creating an exciting, informal mood.

I have been recording a new Cd this week....."Korsa Floden"...a set of songs written in rainy Cumbria....about some rainy subjects...and some sunny ones...and even some snowy ones!

I will be "releasing" it on March 20th at No.15 cafe Penrith (www.myspace.com/no15cafe) when I will be playing a gig with Samsa (www.myspace.com/abandcalledsamsa).

Thanks to Joe Marshall whom has put so much time in to recording and co-producing this CD!

Kärlek
