In a recent study, 715 Black girls and women (ages 15 to 21) who were enrolled in a HIV prevention program were sureveyed about their condom use. The subjects were asked how many times they had sex during a two week period and how many times they used a condom. Only 186 reported using a condom each time they had sex. However, after their vaginal fluid was screened for Y chromosome DNA; 34% were found to have semen present.

The Associated Press reports that a new study finds at least one in four teenage girls nationwide has a sexually transmitted disease, or more than 3 million teens.

The study, conducted by CDC researcher Dr. Sara Forhan is an analysis of nationally representative data on 838 girls who participated in a 2003-04 government health survey. Teens were tested for four infections: human papillomavirus, or HPV, which can cause cervical cancer and affected 18 percent of girls studied; chlamydia, which affected 4 percent; trichomoniasis, 2.5 percent; and herpes simplex virus, 2 percent.

Highlights from the study:

  • About half of the girls acknowledged ever having sex; among them, the rate was 40 percent. While some teens define sex as only intercourse, other types of intimate behavior including oral sex can spread some infections.
  • The highest overall prevalence is among black girls nearly half the blacks studied had at least one STD

We want to know what you think of this article.  Are these statistics shocking to you?  Does it change the way you think about safe sex and the risks you face?  What steps can people take to bring down these infection rates?

We welcome your comments!
