Current mood:  contemplative

Hi everyone

So this year has been an absolute ripper, and it's coming to a pretty mad close. In the last month, we've returned from a freezing cold Korea, had an awesome welcome home show at the Chapel, spent some time singing with the kids out at Rowville Secondary College (hi guys!), done the national anthem at the Melbourne Cup greyhoud races (of all things) and we're working on putting together a target listing for our next recording project.
Oh, plus Loz and the Colonel's episodes of Kids in the Kitchen have started going to air, so we'll have video footage of those two goons and their best cooking efforts for you shortly.

Korea wrap-up

There were some valid complaints that our Taiwan tour report from the last newsletter contained nothing but singing and partying - well, Korea was more of the same in that regard; we worked hard and played hard every second of every day. So we won't go into too much detail this time. If you want to see some photos, we've uploaded somehere.
Suffice to say it was just as mad as Taiwan. We did 2 major TV appearances, one on MBC, the other on EBS, which as I understand have either just aired or are just about to air. We'll get the video as soon as we can. Thanks to our sensational AusTrade rep Youna Kim for making those happen!
We made lots of new friends, including the very talented guys from Snow City (and their awesome vocal percussionist Jay, who lined up a whole bunch of other gigs for us while we were there), and the Maytree team, who we met in Taiwan. A cappella is a very vibrant scene in Korea, there's lots of very talented groups around and we were amazed by the professionalism there. There's even a bar dedicated solely to a cappella music - how cool is that?
Lots of crazy stuff happened but... Ask us about that in person, we'll talk your ears off! At the end of it all, we're discussing digital distribution options in Korea in preparation for next year.
...Next year? Yeah, next year. 2010 looks like it could be "2009 squared" for the Suade lads. We're already planning our return to Asia, and the trip looks like it might be twice as long. Singapore, Korea, China, Taiwan, and Japan are all looking like strong options.
So, that's November covered, what's happening this month?

Christmassy Gigs,

That's what! There's only a few around Melbourne this year, but they're all free and they're all going to be a lot of fun.
Here's a few you're welcome to join us at:

Thursday December 3 - yes, tomorrow night. Breast Cancer findraiser, East Malvern.

Jenny Blain, mother of no less than two Suade lads, is going to shave all her hair off in solidarity with a friend who has a nasty case of boob cancer. Suade, being big fans of boobs in general, are going to sing a set live at her house before she does it.
You're welcome to join us - it's a big house. Entry is free but Jenny would appreciate a donation towards cancer research. She's going to go around with a naked head, it's the least you can do.
Thursday December 3, 7pm
Phone Jenny on (03) 9571 5340 for address details. Everyone's welcome but she wants to have some idea of numbers!

Saturday December 5 - Denis Walter's Carols by the Bay, Geelong

You might have seen ads for this one on the telly; Denis, apart from being everyone's favourite Keno host, runs a fantastic community carols event each year on the beach in Geelong. We'll be singing several tunes this year, along with a bunch of other groups. It's always a beaut night with the carols and the candlelight and the huge crowd if you're into that sort of thing.
Saturday 5th December, 7.45pm
Waterfront Geelong, Eastern Beach Reserve
Get there early, as many as 40,000 people show up so you may teach yourself some new swear words while trying to find a park!

Saturday December 19 - City Of Kingston "Summer Revival Festival"

Everyone loves a sausage. Except vegetarians, but there'll be chicken for you guys*! Our final show for this year will be a lunchtime BBQ in Mentone Station Gardens. We'll be doing two full sets, including every Christmas song we know. But there's only four of those. And if I know us, we'll stick around for a drink or two afterwards, so this is a great event to come down for if you want to catch some great singing and hang around for a chat. We'd love to see you.
Saturday December 19, 11am-1pm
Mentone Station Gardens
Como Pde, Mentone.
*Just kidding, they'll probably have some of those tofu lentil thingies. ;)

Roll your sleeves up and have a sing

If you want to get into singing, there's never been a better time! There's loads of groups looking for new members, and there's a few great festival events next year that get everyone involved.
Two festivals that we'd like to mention are the Boite'sDaylesford Singers' Festival in January 2010, and theHobart Festival of Voices in July 2010. Both are wonderful events if you want to have a bit of a sing, so get on down and shake the cobwebs off your vocal chords!

Cuddles on the Radio

One last thing - 'tis the season, so we're starting to get a bit of airplay around the traps again. If you're one of those people that call up radio stations (and God bless you if you are), why not request that they play our christmas tune?
If they don't have it, we'll send it over to them pronto. ;) So here's lots of big cuddles from us wishing you a great Christmas and/or holiday season. We'll see you in the new year with a whoooole bunch of new songs, new videos, and new love handles from our holiday overindulgences.

Love,

Loz

Current mood:  sleepy
A big HALLLOOOOO from five very tired blokes in Seoul, Korea. We feel like we've lived a lifetime in the last couple of weeks through Taiwan. Here's what we've been up to: Suade takes on the world, comes second If you haven't already heard us trumpeting about it on Facebook, Twitter or any of the other thousands of social networking services we use, we are absolutely pumped to announce that we came second in the Taiwanese TCMC A Cappella festival competition, against squads of vocal and beatboxing ninjas from countries as far-flung as America, Germany, Japan, Korea, Singapore and Taiwan. The standard at the contest was so high we thought we had no chance at all - so we were absolutely pumped to pull equal second place with America's SoundStage behind Germany's Tonalrausch and just ahead of Korea's Maytree, both fully professional groups, and both absolutely stunning. This has given us the taste of blood - we've learned so much from watching the amazing talents of the other singers. Now we have a better sense of our own strengths and weaknesses, and we can see the areas we need to work on before we hit our next international competition, hopefully next year! WOOHOO! Look out, world! RARB USA reviews Home Brew: 4 stars! America's Recorded A Cappella Review Board is pretty much THE vocal music review panel in the USA, their reviewers pump out ratings for the vast majority of vocal music releases in the States and around the world. So we were delighted to get their feedback on the Home Brew CD as we checked into our hotel in Taichung, in the midlands of Taiwan. While the comments were mixed and we certainly have clear areas to improve on for next time, we were rapt that the final score came out at 4 stars out of 5, with some really kind words. We're particularly stoked that the RARB team seemed to really get what we were trying to do with the album, and they enjoyed the original songs. Awesome! Check out some quotes over at our website (http://www.suade.net). Taiwan tour report Long story short, we fell head over heels in love with Taiwan in the week and a half we spent there. It was a magical trip filled with awesome people, hilarious random experiences and epic, epic partying. We'll never forget it. Long story medium, you can check out the tour report I've put up over at our website (http://www.suade.net). It's got a bunch of photos and a very brief roundup of some of the shenanigans we got up to. If you want the full story, you'll have to pry it out of us individually. But be aware - some of what went on tour is gonna have to stay on tour! ;) We're now in Korea, more about Korea later! Welcome us home @ The Chapel, Nov 8! How often do you get to join a four-star, world #2 vocal band for a huge end-of-tour party? Not often, I bet. Well, lucky you! Next Sunday is your chance! We're going to wrap this tour up with a bunch of TV and shows in Korea, then head home to celebrate our success and the start of what we believe will be a regular international schedule for Suade. How better to put a full stop on such a great tour than to return to our favourite Melbourne venue for a huge show? This will probably be our last public show of 2009, so come down and party with us! Venue: The Chapel, 12 Little Chapel Street, Prahran, VIC - Australia Date: Sunday 8 November Time: 5 pm Tickets: $30 Full, $20 Concession and Groups 10+, $90 Family (+ transaction fee) Running Time: approx 2 hours 20 minutes Tickets are on sale now... September 2009

G'day everyone, and welcome to Spring! As temperatures, skirt hems and corresponding hormone levels shoot upwards in the coming months, the Suade lads are warming up for one of the busiest quarters of their young lives; new tunes, new friends, new passports and a buttload of singin'.

First off, hi to everyone we met in Mudgee, NSW a couple of weeks back - and g'day also to everyone that came down to the Chapel for the show on the 16th. We had a great time - and support act The Bathtets made quite an impression. It's hard to believe that with such talent, they're barely out of high school. Thanks and well done guys, you've got class, talent and a great future to look forward to.

2 Melbourne Shows This Month

We're in a sharing kind of mood right now, so we're teaming up with two other Melbourne groups for combined shows this month that promise to be a load of fun.

Friday September 11: Suade & VF4 @ Theatreworks (ALL AGES)

For starters, it's boys against girls when we take on theVocal Folds 4 ladies next Friday in a night of head-to-head vocal shenanigans at Theatreworks. These 4 girls are simply awesome singers - if Suade's the top male vocal group in Australia, VF4 must be right up there with the top female groups. Not too hard on the eye either, I might add.

We're taking the opportunity to put together a few 9-part arrangements... In early rehearsals, these are already sounding heeeeeyoooooge. This might be the only time we ever get to sing this stuff, so don't miss out!

This is an all-ages show, under-agers are most welcome.

Friday September 11, 8pm
Theatreworks
14 Acland St, St Kilda
Bookings: 9534 3388

Saturday September 19: The Melbourne Chorus featuring Suade @ The Witehorse Centre

The Melbourne Chorus have booked us in to perform a feature set for their two September 19 shows at the Whitehorse Centre, including a combined surprise number that's going to be crazy fun.

The Colonel can't make that show - so our good buddy and ex-member Sammy "SammyQ" Qualtrough is going to stand in. Remember him? He's the short guy with the shiny buttons on his crotch and the weird hair. Oh, and the awesome voice. It's always a pleasure to take the stage with Sammy.

The Melbourne Chorus feat. SUADE
"A Rhapsody In Clover"
The Whitehorse Centre
Saturday September 19th 14:00 and 19:30
Tickets $30 / $26

Arrangements For Sale

If you're in a singing group and you wanna have a crack at some of our original songs or our arrangements of the covers we do, you'll be glad to know that The Colonel has been busily preparing most of our arrangements as very pretty 5-part PDF music scores, and we're putting them up for sale.

Frankly, I think it's a little offensive that WE get scrappy, photocopied sheets with scribbles all over them and YOU get lovely, manicured PDFs with full colour covers.

Email thecolonel@suade.net if you're interested; tell him which tunes you're after. They cost peanuts, and each of these arrangements has done great things for us.

Digital Sales are Doing Great

Just for those who wondered how our new digital distribution model is going, sales from both our own MP3 store and iTunes are chugging along really nicely, helping to fund our touring this year and our upcoming recording projects.

Digital is a super-convenient way to get hold of our stuff - for 32 bucks you can download the whole Suade collection, including high-res artwork PDFs and even a couple of live recordings that aren't on any CDs. Plus we don't use any DRM/copy protection, so once you've bought 'em they're yours to use on whatever device you like. :)

.....Aaaaaand that's about it for this month. Next month, we're off to Taiwan & Korea for our first international tour, and we'll be throwing a farewell party to show you what kind of act we'll be taking over there.

So until we next meet, enjoy the start of spring and keep on singin'!Love,
Loz
...and the Suade lads.

HOME BREW

It's finally finished... WOOHOO!!!!!! After 2 weeks of 14+ hour days slaving over a hot mixing desk, and one final all-nighter, Loz and The Colonel took the mixed tracks in to Crystal Mastering last Thursday, tweaked the overall sound and cut the master disc from which all the production discs will be copied.

With Roy's help, Loz then spent friday cleaning up the CD cover artwork, and then took a deep breath and sent them off to the printers. Production CDs aren't laser-duplicated, like the ones you burn in your PC - they're replicated by moulding liquid plastic against a glass master disc with billions of tiny pits. It's quite an amazing process, here's a youtube vid that shows you what goes on behind the scenes.

So that's what's happening with HOME BREW right now. Our 14-track baby's all grown up now and ready to leave home. All the hard work's finished, now all that's left to do.... Is PARTY!

CD LAUNCH

Which is where YOU come in, people! We've got a sensational venue right in the heart of Melbourne - The HIFI bar on Swanston St - and we're gearing up for a riot of a launch party on the evening of Sunday May 17. If you made it to the "All Singing, No Dancing" launch in 2006, you'll know we like to send our CDs off with a proper bang! We're working on some new tunes, both originals and covers, to debut on the night.

You've got 'til the end of the week to get your tickets at earlybird prices - that ends this Friday, so make sure you don't miss out!

UNDER 18s are welcome at the gig, provided they're accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. So technically it's not an all-ages gig - which is why it says 18+ on the booking page - but we are 100% assured that anyone can get in with a parent or guardian.

HOME BREW LAUNCH
SUADE Live @ The HIFI
125 Swanston Street Melbourne
5pm, Sunday 17th May 2009
Tickets $25 including booking fee
**EARLY BIRD tickets $20**
BOOKINGS: 1300 THE HIFI OR
http://www.thehifi.com.au/events/7434/

As we mentioned last month, we'll be selling the HOME BREW CD for $15 on the night of the launch, and for $20 forever afterward. So it's the perfect spot to pick up an armful of discs! :)

Onwards and Upwards

After the launch party, we'll be having a pretty full year of live shows, which will be a lot of fun. We've got some more dates just about locked in at the Chapel and other spots around Melbourne, plus another couple of weeks in beautiful Tasmania, some potential opportunities in Sydney, several corporate and wedding gigs, a few of those fantastic big Chrissy shows, and we're getting close to pulling the trigger on our first international outing, which is likely to be a worldwide a cappella competition and short tour in Taiwan while we work out how we're gonna get ourselves into America and Europe.

One of the tunes on HOME BREW is looking like it'll be picked up for the intro of a kids' TV cooking show, and The Colonel might get his first gig as a celebrity chef. Rob's performing some Gilbert & Sullivan, Roy's doing plenty of big festival dates with Jackson Jackson, Loz is working as an assistant mechanic in the pit crew for a Ferrari team at the Targa Tasmania, while working on an all-new suade.net website, and Een is sitting at home, listening to the HOME BREW disc and giggling to himself because he can listen to it right now and nobody else can.

Get yourself booked in to that launch party, and you can giggle a very similar giggle.

See you soon!
Cheers
Loz
....and the Suade lads.

You know that new album we've been banging on about for so long? Well, it's launching at The Hi-Fi Bar on Sunday, May 17th @ 5pm. As all of you know, we've been putting heart and soul into this album for over twelve months, and we'd simply love you all to come and celebrate its completion. We've named it "Home Brew" to reflect the fact that:

a) We love beer
b) The Colonel makes beer
c) We've done bloody EVERYTHING on this record ourselves - we bought all the gear, Chris taught himself to engineer, and co-produced with Loz. We recorded it in Roy's cupboard and Loz is doing all the design work. Plus, it's almost all original music, so we even brewed the tunes at home.

SPECIAL PRICE FOR YOU!
We're offering two very special discounts for all you lovely people. Firstly, book in the next three weeks at receive 20% OFF your ticket price.Secondly, copies of our CD HOME BREW will be available on the night for $15. That's 25% OFF the price for launch attendees only.

DEKE SHARON - good to meet ya

In other news, a couple of weeks ago we had the chance to spend a workshop and a night on the turps with Deke Sharon from San Francisco. For those who don't know this clown, he's commonly referred to as the father of contemporary a cappella. He founded CASA, BOCA, The Contemporary A Cappella League and TotalVocal, is a member of the House Jacks, brought vocal percussion to the a cappella scene, has worked with Boyz II Men, BaSix, the Nylons and pretty much everyone else - and is a general all-round mister smartypants when it comes to vocal bands.

We spent a few hours showing Deke our new tunes, workshopping performance ideas and generally stuffing about. He gave us plenty of great feedback, and reckons we're "the number one male a cappella group in Australia." Nothing you guys didn't know already, but it's nice to hear it from somebody who understands the singing scene inside out. He reckons we'll be competitive on the global scene once we pull our fingers out and get touring.

Afterwards, we got him on the Aussie plonk and some meaty South Australian red gave him a case of hiccups that lasted more than an hour. Result!

Anyway, get yer diaries out, stick some red pen all over May 17th, get your families and your buddies in, and buy your tickets for the CD launch before all the good seats get bums on them!

Can't wait to see you all there!

Friday, February 20, 2009
Hello all and, even though we're half way through Feb, happy new year from the Suade boys!

This update will be short, sweet and to the point cos we're all being busy little beavers organising some very cool stuff that will be happening this year.

Such stuff shall include:

1. Free lunchtime gig on Monday.

You read right. Next Monday we're doing a FREE public gig in the student bar at Australian Catholic Uni, proudly brought to you by the Melbourne campus Student Association. So, next Monday, Feb 23, get your booty down to ACU (115 Victoria Pde, Fitzroy) from 12-1(yummy lunch time) to see the guys in their first public show for 2009. Don't worry, the bar will be open and CDs will be available.

2. Bushfire benefits

We'll be helping out in what little way we can with the bushfire relief effort over the next couple of months, appearing at a few benefit gigs. Dates will be sorted out soon - we hope you can come contribute, every bit helps the poor buggers that have lost homes, animals, property, friends and family in some of the most beautiful parts of Victoria.

3. New website.

Lozzo is currently beavering away on a new website for '09. Personally, I reckon it looks pretty spiffy, and will incorporate new and exciting content including forums where you can chat to other fans, chat to the guys, or just chat to yourself if you want, as well as the convenience of digital mp3 downloads from the Suade store. The site will launch shortly, and Loz says "it's a fricken technological Death Star" so that sounds.... good?

4. New CD.

The new CD has been named and the Blain brothers are very close to signing off on the recording and mixing bit. We're now starting the design phase and it looks like we'll be launching mid-late May. It's jam packed with all-new original Suade tunes as well as a couple of new covers of some of our favourites. We'll have a date and venue for the launch soon, and it's gonna be huge - worth the wait, we promise!

5. International touring.

For a while now we've had our hearts set on taking our music overseas to expand our audience. Now we've actually started planning how we'll make this a reality. The USA would seem to be the most logical choice, as we seem to have a fair few fans over there already - but the visa laws there make it bloody tough. We're working on it, as well as possible trips into Asia and Europe.

Cheers and see you all Monday,

een and da Suade boyz.
Tuesday, December 09, 2008
Hello my good friends and welcome to another fun-filled episode of Suade's monthly adventures. It has been quite a month as usual.

Rare Undergound Urban Acappella!

Ever since about midnight on the 10th November, Een has been busily and excitedly sewing a proud new patch onto his Scout duds - a "Street-cred" badge depicting strange harmonic music in a dusty ol factory with motrobikes surrounding him. Yes, since we last spoke we had our little impromptu show at the old AALTO factory in Port Melbourne, a good seventy people rocked up to join in some relaxed fun. Great effort everyone, considering you had about eight hours notice!

Well, the stage was creaking and rocking (as if some really heavy man was dancing on it), the chairs ranged from fold-out campers and old massage tables to empty industrial gas cylindars, a couple of dubious characters dropped their dacks during the undies song, and no one left without their clothes and faces covered in a collection of dust, grime and motorcycle tyre smoke. Yet still there were smiles! A big thanks to all who made it - especially those newcomers who needed a freebie to be convinced! We had a great time in a really relaxed setting, we'll see if we can organise more odd-location gigs like this one in the new year. Let us know if you know about an atmospheric place we might be able to use...

Christmas Cheer Approaches

Stuck for a gift for Uncle Fredrique and Aunty Mavis? In need of some stocking filler? Need some smooth, ambient tunes for your Chrissy party?
No? Bugger. Wanna buy a CD then?

Don't forget about our "Cuddles For Christmas E.P." or the much heralded "All Singing, No Dancing" album when choosing your gifts this year. You can order them by clicking here and following the links. A snail-mail form is also available. Jump on and check out our range of merchandise too. Strewth... it'd be straight out rude not to I reckon!

We're singing at a couple of carols gigs again this year. Fill up your picnic hampers with your prefered brand of crackers and cheese, a bottle or three of naughty, don your goofiest santa-hat and head on down for some early christmas cheer. They're free events, so if the sound of jingling bells doesn't yet make you want to strangle baby reindeer with tinsel, come say g'day and sing along when you know the words.

Bayside (Dendy Park)
Tuesday 9th December (Twilight)*
(Yes, tomorrow night!)

Glen Eira (Caulfield Racecourse)
Sunday 21st December (Twilight)*

*Updated info available from council websites.

Here's Suade signing off and wishing all you lovely people the merriest of silly seasons, and the happiest, most refreshing start to the new year you can fathom!

OCTOBER 2008

Allo allo. Loz here, I'm a bit late with the newsletter this month,
due to catastrophic Vista failure, re-installation and some brand new
combinations of swear words I don't think I could have dreamed up
otherwise. Thanks Microsoft!

But that's okay, because it's given us time to upload a:

Special Gift for our Mailing List buddies!

So here's the scoop: the mixing guy at one of our main July shows in
Hobart was nice enough to send us a desk tape of the show, and we
thought we'd chop out one of the most special moments and give you
guys a free live MP3 to tide you over until the next CD hits the
shelves.

This is pretty much the only recording out there of us singing our
favourite Celtic folk tune 'She Moved Through the Fair' roughly as
arranged by the amazing King'Singers ( http://www.kingssingers.co....m/ ).
It's a haunting and beautiful tune about a sheila who dies before her
wedding day, told from the perspective of the bloke who's spewing that
he never got to bump uglies with her.

Woohoo! Gimme that free MP3! ( http://suade.net/audio/Sua....de%20-%20She%20Moved%20Thr....ough%20The%20Fair%20(Live%....20in%20Hobart).mp3 ) (4.6 meg download,
right-click and choose 'Save As' to keep it. No nasty DRM, and the
original song is out of copyright, so you can do whatever you like
with it!)

We hope you enjoy it, it's one of those songs that is unlikely to
make it onto our CDs but it gives us goosebumps all over when we nail
it for the right crowd in the right room. A magic song. Let us know if
you like it!

What else have we been up to...

Channel 31 Christmas Special

Ah yes, that. Yesterday afternoon we taped an appearance on Channel
31's Theatre Games Live Chrissy special. To the best of my knowledge
it's to be broadcast December 24th, but we'll remind you closer to the
date. Quite a few special guests on the show, we just poked our heads
in to sing 'cuddles' and nick off. Good fun!

CD Progress

The Colonel, Rob and I have been spending a lot of time on the CD,
and we're up to a point now where there's really just a few lead
tracks to go before mixing and mastering. All that's holding us back
is a lingering chest cold from yours truly that seems to keep on
keepin' on - and I need all my pipes mucus-free to hit them big notes
in Steal Your Heart and the Underpants song.

But we're definately looking at a light at the end of the tunnel,
starting to talk about album names, artwork/design concepts and that
sort of stuff.

In fact, we're so confident that we'll have it out before Christmas
that we're planning to start accepting pre-orders for signed, numbered
CDs when we do the...

Saturday November 8 Chapel show

Yep, there's still plenty of tickets left for Chapel off Chapel, and
we're working our butts off to put a beaut show together for Rob's big
debut, so get on the booking site (
http://sabo.seatadvisor.co....m/sabo/servlets/TicketRequ....est?eventId=118727&present....er=AUCOS&venue=&event=
) and grab your seats if you haven't already!

People have been asking if there's dinner at the venue; that's a
negative. But Chapel street has so much great chow you're sure to find
something to wrap your choppers around - we like the soovers at Lamb's
and the hearty soups at Borsch, Vodka and Tears if you can get a seat!

Hope you're loving this Spring weather if you're in Australia - damn
it's good to see that sun again!

See ya soon!
:)
