Alessio Mereu & Andrea Ferlin Deep Thoughts EP (CNTXT39 - 12"/Download) A1. Deep Thoughts A2. Boxis B1. Walking on the Forest Path Contexterrior is pleased to present the first collaboration from Italian producers Alessio Mereu and Andrea Ferlin, three immaculately produced techno cuts as slick as melting ice, with eerie voices woven so deep into the mix, you’ll wonder whether you’re actually hallucinating them. Mereu is known for his material on labels like CMYK and Toys For Boys, and is also half the duo Bunkers whose “Holding Back” and “Barajas” have made the rounds in the clubs these past several months. Ferlin is known for his past releases on Freak n’ Chic, Boxer and Mindshake, and is also half of Duoteque. His productions have found their way into a number of commercially released mix CDs including those by Magda, Triple R, Damian Lazarus & Matthew Styles. From the creepy title track, circling around like a shark that smells blood, to the serene yet bouncy “Boxis”, to the tribal touch of “Walking on the Forest Path”, the Deep Thoughts EP offers a variety of tracks perfect for dancefloor meditation. myspace.com/alessiomereumyspace.com/andreaferlin

The single arrives next week with brand new remixes: Bloody Mary feat. Argenis Brito - Sed non Satiata (Remixes) CNTXT38 (vinyl/download)
A1. Shonky – Papreek Lost Miniok mix B1. Alex Celler – Twisted revamp B2. Sierra Sam – Déjà Vu mixBloody Mary’s Black Pearl made quite a splash this summer, receiving a storm of praise from DJs and critics alike – especially impressive considering it was her debut album, as well as the first full-length record on Contexterrior. Awarded 4 out of 5 stars from DJ Mag and Resident Advisor, and getting play from a wide cast of DJs ( Tiefschwarz, Adam Beyer, Luciano and so on), Black Pearl has set itself apart as contender for techno album of the year! One of the standout tracks was “Sed non Satiata”, marked by its latino flair and gritty spoken word from Argenis Brito (vocalist for Señor Coconut’s touring band as well as a producer in his own right with releases on Cadenza). We invited three of our favorite producers to put their own touch on Mary’s original, with three drastically different results: Shonky ( Freak n’ Chic) adds a smooth, poppy melody contrasted with disorienting hypnotic effects as he chops up Brito’s voice with the “Papreek Lost Miniok” mix. London’s Alex Celler ( TuningSpork, Cécille) builds up from mellow to menacing, layering different dub elements and pitching down the vocals for his “Twisted Revamp”. Finally, Sierra Sam ( Toys For Boys) experiences “Déjà Vu” with his remix, using the same galloping percussion as in the original he co-produced with Mary, but juxtaposing it over a new ominous, funereal fog of synthesizers.

Sierra Sam - Mannequin EP (CNTXT37) Out now on 12" (split with CNTXT36) and available for digital download 1. Suit Yourself 2. Phony Man
Following his saxy single “The Swarm” on TuningSpork and remix for Monika Kruse on Terminal M, Sierra Sam is back again with the Mannequin EP. Sam was recently seen on Contexterrior co-producing with Bloody Mary for her Black Pearl album, and on D.I.Y.’s House Tools Vol. 2, but this time he’s flying solo: “Suit Yourself” weaves itself around a clattering pastiche of percussion – from tribal to latin to techy – as the vocal loop “You keep me hangin’…” pops in. A pair of sugary synth chords pulsates around the groove as we hear the singer conclude his thought, “…like a suit that don’t fit too well.” The next track “Phony Man” serves as a moodier counterpart, built upon a dynamic bounce with a disembodied voice murmuring through the ether. Aquatic dub elements appear like underwater bubbles floating to the surface as the bounce develops into a full-force stomp. Whereas “Suit Yourself” is propelled by an element of pop, “Phony Man” shows Sam’s developed sense of subtlety and ambience. Two sides of the same coin: an experienced producer showing his penchant for versatility.

Danton Eeprom - Scoring Only To Be On The Safe Side (CNTXT36) out now on 12"/download
1. There’s Nothing To Be Afraid About Now 2. My Life In Parallel
Since his splash onto the electronic music scene in 2005, London-based Danton Eeprom has proven himself a major force, having released a string of EPs on several esteemed labels like Freak N Chic and Tsuba in addition to his very own Fondation Records. Danton’s quality productions led to remixes for top-tier names like Röyksopp, Simian Mobile Disco and Little Boots, and he also formed the duo La Horse with Ivan Smagghe. Does this guy even sleep?!
Mr. Eeprom made his first Contexterrior appearance earlier this year, providing vocals and extra bits for a track on fellow frenchie Bloody Mary’s Black Pearl album. Now he delivers a new EP titled Scoring Only To Be On The Safe Side. With lead track “There’s Nothing To Be Afraid About Now”, Danton takes the atonality of Varèse or Stravinsky onto the dancefloor for a mishmash of string accents, cats jumping on the piano, and a malfunctioning 808. Then comes the decidedly more electro-based “My Life in Parallel”, its commanding fuzzy bassline propelling the energy upward. Atmospheric drones linger in the high ranges, giving the listener a woozy feeling until – WTF? – a spatter of blues guitar and spiraling sounds come out of nowhere, leaving just as quickly as they entered. If there’s one thing you can expect from Danton Eeprom, it’s unpredictability – even repeated listens offer a bewildering sense of displacement.

Stefny is the latest member of the Contexterrior crew! The Speakeasy

dOP: "Love 'Blind Pig'! Killer track!"
Kate Simko: "Love the low-end in all the tracks -- nice deep bass and
sense of space -- an audio treat. My favorite is 'Blind Tiger', but
will play 'Shebeen' too."
Philip Sherburne: "I like the creeping feel of 'Shebeen' best, but the
grooves and sounds are solid on all three tracks."
Electric Indigo: "Very, very cool! Especially 'Blind Pig'. Love it,
gonna play for sure!"
Matt Star: "Nice outstanding stuff! Contexterrior is one of my
favorite labels at the moment."
Shonky: "'Shebeen' is the one for me -- deep and hypnotic, perfect for
when nobody remembers their own name. All the details are really nice,
and you know what we say, details make the difference."

Resident Advisor's latest podcast in their series comes courtesy of Maayan Nidam who released her debut full-length album earlier this year on PowerShovelAudio. Contexterrior fans know her as Miss Fitz, responsible for the tracks "Drifting On" and "Woods"... Miss Fitz drops the pseudonym on this week's RA podcast.
Maayan
Nidam may be much more familiar to you when she’s DJing or producing
under her Miss Fitz moniker, but this year has arguably been all about
the noise she’s been making under her own name. As Fitz, she’s been
releasing her own minimal house and techno for over three years now,
fusing together synthetic and organic sounds to create a restrained yet
powerfully rhythmic style, and she’s also proved her worth as a
collaborator, releasing alongside Robert Johnson resident Vera Heindel
as Mara Trax, and Berlin-based ex-Detroiters Shaun Reeves and Lee
Curtiss as Uli Künkel.
Her short but illustrious track record began to stir the interests of
Japanese label PowerShovel Audio at the start of last year, whose
representatives were already in Cuba recording native instrumentalists
and vocalists for the project. After handing Nidam the master tapes of
their source material, she began to interpret the samples into loops
and sketches, eventually merging the two disparate worlds of minimal
house and indigenous Cuban music into what would become the Night Long LP. Here at RA we were big fans of the album, and hence decided to ask Nidam to deliver a similarly themed mix for
this week’s podcast. With plenty of lush instrumentation throughout,
she’s crafted a smooth selection that encompasses jazz-funk, disco, and
house without ever letting up the groove.
