Hi,

Derrick and I had been doing this covers challenge on thumped (www.thumped.com) for the last while. Following his death, I was able to suggest that we do a cover challenge on one of his favourite themes - rickenbackers. he really loved doing those and we had a lot o fun in the last months joking about what to choose each month.

So I decided to record one of his own rickenbacker-led tunes - fecky the ninth by Crumb and also put it up here on the myspace (the original is on their myspace - www.myspace.com/crumbmusic)

It was kinda difficult to do, but also a treat. I even tried to do it in the style of recording that he basically taught me. And put (as best i could) a derrick style guitar riff on it. Still hard to think hes really gone.

best,  eoin

Ps - if you wanna see the original posting on thumped - heres the link

Songs From The Apex

Album Reviews
--> -->--> THUMBNAIL AND POP-UP --> --> -->--> REVIEWTEXT -->Although born in Ireland, Eoin Young has spent much of the last fifteen years living in Hungary. For his first outing as Villa R though, don't expect any East European influences. 'Songs From The Apex' is straight ahead breezy indie pop, aided by an assortment of talent from the Irish alternative scene.

More a songwriter than a singer, Young's vocals aren't particularly distinguished but his grasp of melody is superb. The easy influence to suggest would be New Order largely because 'Temptation' is covered here as a bizarre military electronic track but even shoegazing gets a mention for the half acoustic/half effects-saturated 'Memory & Passion'. Layers of indie guitars underpin the superb pop of 'Overred' and there will be few sunnier songs released this year than the jangly 'Full Sound'. Digging further into the record, the title track and 'Coloured Lines' are oddly arranged but reveal real inventiveness beneath the bubbly surface whilst 'Deadly Muses' and 'Read The Signs' opt for acoustic melancholia. This is a neatly produced album with ideas old and new but always interesting and highly tuneful.

cover Villa R - "Songs From The Apex" cd (Disques Fridge)
This package came to me from Budapest, as that's where the band's chief songwriter, EÛin Young, lives now, but the album was recorded over the span of a week last year in his native Ireland with his old friends and bandmates from I Am The Waltons and The Deportees (who themselves were/are also in Hey Paulette and Crumb). The songs on this album have a pretty wide range, which include the jangly sound of "Plain Sailing" and "Full Sound", the power pop heard in "Not The Big Man" and the somber mood of "Deadly Muses" and "Memory & Passion" (the first in a Nick Drake style, while the other is more like Neil Young). There's also an instrumental that sounds just like an old R.E.M. outtake (which gave me a chuckle on first listen as it wasn't until the song was over that I realized it was called "Murmur"), and even some casio-pop (or as the liner notes put it: cheesy keyboard) in "Coloured Lines" and a fairly haunting cover of New Order's "Temptation". With such a wide variety of styles, it's not too surprising that the disc is a bit uneven overall, but there's definitely something for everyone on here, and enough to keep the record interesting.  MTQ=8/11

MySpace of the Week: Villa R

Villa R emailed Guardian Unlimited Music and asked to be considered for MySpace of the week and because they said they were based in Hungary but from Ireland, I thought "that's a bit exotic, I'll give them a whirl". The quintet also refer to themselves as a "failed Irish Indie supergroup", which is a pretty endearing statement, and they make admirably breezy, melodious pop music. You too can give them a whirl here

Villa R - Songs from the Apex

Label: Disques Fridges

Year: 2007

Duration: 38 minutes

Rating 3

Those who wear their love of sweet guitar melodies like a badge of honour should find that Villa R give them good reason to stick their chests out even further.

Brilliantly billing themselves as a "failed Irish indie supergroup" - members of Hey Paulette, Jubilee Allstars and I am the Waltons feature - their week together in a Dublin house in August 2005 has resulted in an album that gets the right mix between nostalgia and now and offers some special moments.

For vinyl collectors the opening two tracks, 'Plain Sailing' and 'Overred', would make a great 7" find - and the deliberations about whether Side A or B was the best or most wistful would swing every three minutes.

Elsewhere, there's a great follow-up single to be pressed from the joyously upbeat 'Not the Big Man' and 'Full Sound'; some time spent under cloudier skies and an odd cover of the New Order track 'Temptation' that the album doesn't actually need but which, like the rest of its companions, becomes more endearing the longer you stay with it.
