4 stars.
http://www.realdetroitweekly.com/article_4397.shtml
"Darkly swaying fuzz drones vividly shape visions of austere dystopias through strongly laid tones of guitar-heavy post-punk's fiery wrenching shreds and shimmering unearthly flares married with a '60s druggy art-rock feel of serpentine melodies sung through fuzzed-out AM-radio mics, conveying poetic and foreboding elegies of life and love in an enclosing technological nightmare. This local quartet brings a dark but energizing music of escapism, with a dreamy, atmospheric coating through capable and experimental recording styles. "Ancestors" is this city's new bittersweet, reflective anthem, an epic, cathartic guitar blitz. — JEFF MILO"

great review of our album. check it.
http://www.metrotimes.com/music/review.asp?rid=24187 Major Tom revisited Not unlike the mysterious pillar suddenly appearing before the apes in Stanley Kubrick's 2001, the Detroit-based Oblisk is at once unknowable and undeniably present. Sounding like an even more disaffected Dean Wareham, lead singer-guitarist Asim Akhtar intones distance over ghostly organ and skittish drums, while guitars pick out delicate melodies or cyclic, oblong riffs. More human than Hal, though, much of the time Oblisk is more like a musically fleshed-out version of Bowie's Major Tom — not the song in which he resides but the character himself, if he were given the opportunity to present his outer-space plight over the course of an entire album. He'd certainly still be de-Earthed and possibly on the verge of panic, but ultimately accepting of his disconnection with wistful abandon. And when the music here works best, Oblisk charges onward behind Akhtar, much like Tom's ever-hurtling spaceship — all roaring nitrogen, anti-gravity and sucking air. Musically, Oblisk hasn't forgotten the effectiveness of basic psychedelia; the left-right panning looped guitar of Empty Film Reel (yes, that's a name) has all the effect of a sizable intake of nitrous oxide (please put the headphones on for this one), and as the unintelligible (backward?) vocals mumble desperately just below the surface and microscopic shards of guitar start pinpricking the skin, it just gets weirder. But a moment later, the listener is suddenly encased in the churning, swampy title track, and the contrast has the effect of flailing one's way through cobwebs in the House of the Long Shadows, only to hit on solid pavement when something like a chorus comes along. Safe ground! And then those guitars start back up in a shimmering arc toward the moon ... It's that hazy unknowable quality that keeps the listener returning to these songs, as if there's some code to crack with just one more listen. It's likely, though, that in fact there is no code — just thick, webby psychedelia comfortably wrapped around some very good songs ... and far out of reach of Ground Control.

our music will be in an independent film called "a rake tenor" which is based off a book by j.e. ola. i suggest all of you go to their site, watch the trailer, add them as a friend and go see it when it's playing around here/there. from the looks of the trailer, it seems pretty badass. there will be a screening for it in the metro detroit area this summer. we're happy to have our music in a solid film. for those of you who know us, you know we're all about the audio/visual combo...

What they say about us....taken from the website of the lager house venue in detroit....
"Oblisk: Droning, experimental post rock with elements of psychedelia that round out the mix perfectly. Trance like vocals ride on top of slow and low grooves that entrance the listener as much as they might puzzle. Definitely on the accessible end of the experimental spectrum. Oblisk might just open some minds, which is clearly what theyve set out to do. Were excited about their debut."

The true final push on our record is being done NOW. Every single free minute is being dedicated to the sound. I am quite isolated from what's going on in the outside world. My sleep pattern is a complete mess. Right now it's all about clensing of the body/mind, as well as mixing/fine tuning the music. Late nights I go to the secret location away from distractions and take care of the last bits and pieces of songs. The entire unit is making sacrifices to make this happen.
Obviously, we've taken our sweet time in releasing this. A lot of people have been asking us about it, which is solid because there is an anticipation. There are plenty of reasons. One being we really don't feel like putting out some rushed piece of crap that will have no soul to it. (The standard reason all bands give) We've recorded a ton of songs. Not all are meant go on the record. Also, this record is 100% DIY. We used our own equipement for recording, as well as at least 10 diffrent spaces where we did the recording. A lot of those spaces were given to us by our great friends. They know who they are. A lot of time in numerous cold basements, bedrooms, and spaces was spent. I'm doing all the mixing, producing, artwork, etc. Theres a lot to do on top of our already crazy individual lives.
The songs cover a lot of ground in sound. Amongst all the creativity that's happening, there are already tunes being put together for the following release. So, expect another EP to come out not too long after. Whats happening here behind the scenes is the a beutiful thing. You don't even know. Theres gonna be guitars, drums, cello, synths, organ, sitar, piano, xyzalphone and much more appearing on this album. Somehow its gonna be melted together into one.
Who knows who will get it. Why these songs are the way the are. Some of these songs will take a little attention span, time and disecting. As a whole it is definatly a soundtrack for a drive on the open roads.
Once it's all said and done, we will be ready to resurface and start playing more shows, making videos, touring etc. This is why this band exists. It's an evolving project. Nothing else in the whole music culture is important. Quit trying so hard to be cool, it's obvious. Be real, make real music and go about your way. We are oblisk.

Oblisk now has a cello player to accompany us in our live sound. Our good friend sara d. will be playing the strings that glue all the other sounds/noises together. Keep an eye and ear out at our upcoming shows. We've been recording with her for the record as well and it's excellent. The sound keeps getting bigger and bigger....
