I'M NOT YOUR BEARDED LAPDOG
Pazzia Contemporary Performing Collective
A curious orchestral recital in Dadaist performative spirit
Milhaud La Création du Monde
Ravel Trois Poèmes de Stéphane Mallarmé
Poulenc Quatre Poèmes de Max Jacob
Poulenc Le Bestiaire
Featuring Parisian mezzo-soprano Latana Phoung, Pazzia’s UK debut will present three French absurdist texts in their sugar-coated musical settings. Following Milhaud’s chamber orchestral showpiece La Création du Monde, song cycles by Ravel and Poulenc will explore a poetry thick with sexual innuendo but ensconced in the musical typeface of lavender fields and dappled sunsets: the sonorous soundworld of the musical Impressionists and Les Six. Visually, the production will also explore taboo ideas within the typical framework of beauty. The performance will culminate in the dramatic evolution of a wearable centrepiece in the style of Victoriana freakshow by designer Ginny Yang.
Quoted from the Mallarmé poems, "I’m not your bearded lapdog" is an oversimplification of the French lyric, "je ne suis pas ton bichon embarbé". While resembling the French 'barbe' (beard), 'embarbé' is an invented word with echoes of 'embourbé' (stuck in the mud), 'embardé' (off the wall) and 'ébarbé' (cleanshaven). Considering colloquialisms and poetic license, ‘bearded lapdog’ could imply any number of debaucherous subtexts from boring lover to barbed genitalia.
“They push the sensory experience of live performance to new
levels... these are wonderfully courageous performers”
– Indyish.com on La Bonne Cuisine
Pazzia Contemporary Performing Collective is an internationally-active initiative which fuses live classical music with performance art and physical theatre. 'Pazzia' is the Italian word for a state of madness generated by extreme creative intensity; a passion that is untranslatable into a single English equivalent. For the past 4 years, Pazzia has been the main creative and collaborative vehicle for Australian conductor and independent producer Kelly Lovelady, enjoying success at Adelaide and Montreal Fringe Festivals and repeat appearances at Pop Montreal International Music Festival.
"An intensely human and humanizing performance"
– Audience member on Miss Donnithorne's Maggot
As much a Feminist manifesto as a recalling of Magritte’s This is not a pipe, Pazzia’s I'M NOT YOUR BEARDED LAPDOG will be a Dada de-gendering of beauty. Grotesque burlesque on an orchestral canvas – not something you see every day on the concert platform.
