This morning as I took Melrose out for her walk, we came face to face with a dragonfly. I've never seen one that close that came darting down the middle of the street heading directly for us. He or she stopped and buzzed in front of me for almost 10 seconds (give or take) before flying onward.

Of course I decided to look up Dragonflies and their symbolism;)

About the Dragonfly

Dragonflies are old and adaptive insects, and are most powerful in the summer under the effects of warmth and sunlight. They are fantastic flyers, darting like light, twisting, turning, changing direction, even going backwards as the need arises. They are inhabitants of two realms - starting with water, and moving to the air with maturity, but staying close to water.

Their colors are a result of reflecting and refracting the power of light. As a result, they are associated with color magic, illusion in causing others only to see what you wish, and other mysticism.

Dragonflies are often represented in Japanese paintings, representing new light and joy. To some Native Americans they are the souls of the dead. Faerie stories say that they used to be real dragons.

Dragonflies are reminders that we are light and can reflect the light in powerful ways if we choose to do so. “Let there be light” is the divine prompting to use the creative imagination as a force within your life.

The Meaning

I am posting this info as is and giving the link because for all your animal symbolism needs - you need to bookmark this site, it’s awesome…

http://www.whats-your-sign.com/animal-symbolism-dragonfly.html.

As a creature of the wind, the dragonlfy totem represents change. It’s iridescent wings are incredibly sensitive to the slightest breeze, and so we are reminded to heed where the proverbial wind blows - lest we run into stormy weather.

Dragonflies are also creatures of the water, and any creature whose habitat is in, or around water carries symbolism relative the the subconscious, or “dreaming” mind and thoughts.

This is because in the animal world, water is symbolic of the subconscious mind (”deeper mind,” “dreaming mind”) and relates to the thoughts we have in relaxed/meditative/sleeping/subconscious states.

Dragonflies carry messages that deal with deeper thought - and they ask that we pay attention to our deeper thoughts and desires.

Hi Guys!

We've partnered with an awesome company called Kickstarter.com and we're so excited to have FANS & KICKSTARTER.COM RELEASE OUR SELF-TITLED ALBUM!!

Two years ago with one dream in mind; to record the demos I had spent the past year making in my apartment. What I found... musicians who constantly challenge me and have in turn made this album what she sounds like today.

In late 2007, I met Greg Pajer (guitar), Andrew James (bass) and Blake Paulson (drums). Within weeks, the foursome were rehearsing and recording demos for our debut album. After meeting with a few other notables, I turned to her trusted friend and producer, Brett Chassen, and his business partner, Bob Kulick.

"Shut Up and Listen!", was released digitally in August 2008, and the morning the album hit iTunes, I was in a meeting with Mark Needham (The Killers, Fleetwood Mac, Chris Isaak, Green Day) to remix the album which would become our self-titled release, The Aftermath.

In November, 2008, we had the amazing pleasure of opening for Berlin and we are opening for them again this New Year's Eve. That night I met the man who would complete the musical puzzle. Dave Schulz (Goo Goo Dolls, Berlin) came aboard adding piano, synths, strings, among other sounds to the album.

We've toured to Texas and back, playing at this year's acclaimed SxSw Music Festival and now we're back with Mark Needham, remixing the ten song self-titled album.Dave's friend Paul Grundman, whose father, Bernie Grundman, mastered Thriller and Fleetwood Mac, to name just a few, is giving us an amazing deal on mastering.

While it's amazingly hard to get industry attention as an independent artist, I've been extremely fortunate to have some amazing industry veterans guide me through this process. Want to see that our album gets the promotion its needs and be able on tour so we can play for all of you. With your help we can make this a reality.

Pledge as little as $10 and receive an exclusive early download of the record as soon as it's done (2 months before it's out on CDs, iTunes, etc.) or pledge $100 and spend New Year's Eve with Elyse and the band as they once again share the stage opening for Berlin in Orange County, CA. Even pledge $1000 and if you can get yourself to LA with a friend, you can join us for a personal day out at the Disneyland.

In the spirit of helping others, we will donating a portion of the album sales from 2010 to a variety of very cool charities.

Familytofamily.org has high income families sponsor low income famiies throughout the US.

CancerSchmancer.org is a preventive cancer movement run by actress and cancer survivor Fran Drescher.

Diabetes.org is an organization which is very close to my heart as both my parents have developed Type II Diabetes.

HKenyaproject.org refurbishes old computers and send them to schools in Kenya. Great for the environment and in return the children in Kenya plant a tree in the Rain Forest- also great for the planet!

Buildon.org is fighting to end illiteracy and poverty around the world. From volunteering alongside U.S. high-school students to joining school construction projects overseas.

The St. Bernard Project (StBernardproject.org) is rebuilding homes in New Orleans devastated during Hurricane Katrina four years ago.

VH1 Save the Music is putting musical instruments and music programs back in public schools where government has cut funding for music and arts education.

Elyse & the Aftermath @ Molly Malones

By Kristin Houser

You know how some bands walk on stage and you wonder how the members ever met, let alone began playing music together? Elyse and the Aftermath is a band that looks like they should be a band. When they walked on stage the five-piece sported nothing but black and denim, and the cohesion of their look was only a precursor to the tightness they would exhibit as musicians. With a voice similar in tone to Gwen Stefani’s if the No Doubt songstress preferred rock to ska, frontwoman Elyse Haren has assembled a group of musicians that are all going in the same direction, and that direction is up.

While the show at Molly Malone’s Thursday night was not the largest crowd the group has performed for (that would likely be the audience when they opened for Terri Nunn and Berlin or perhaps one of their five SXSW shows this past spring), the group put on a performance like they were playing for a packed stadium. Elyse’s soaring vocals and introspective lyrics engaged an enthusiastic crowd that would shout back responses during the between-song banter. “Damaged” and “One Photograph” were two of the group’s catchiest tracks, and “Break My Heart Slowly” is relatable to anyone who’s ever experienced one of those agonizingly slow break-ups (and really, who hasn’t?). The group finished out the show with “The Ones Who Never Talk,” the first single from their upcoming album The Aftermath, which will be available in Best Buy stores this fall. Mark Needham, who has worked with The Killers, Fleetwood Mac, and Green Day, is mixing this album, and if his choice of previous clients is any indication of Elyse and the Aftermath’s chance of success, we’ll be hearing more about them real soon.

Hi Guys:

Sunday night I had the amazing pleasure of recording with the one and only Dave Schulz (Goo Goo Dolls, Berlin, etc..) on our first of four songs.

This weekend we will move on to "The Ones Who Never Talk", and if it is any indication from what we did to "One Photograph", it's sure to make my soul filled with amazement, gratitude and most of all finality.

Working with Dave, is what I have been waiting for... the mood, the nuance and memorable parts. It's how I feel about Greg when he takes a part I've written on the guitar, plays it better and then adds a part I didn't hear. It's really magical.

3 years ago, I knew an engineer who knew Dave... but I didn't have these songs or my band. When we opened for Berlin, we made the connection and then about a month and a half ago, we ran into each other outside of Molly Malones. So, I asked him to play on the last few songs of the remixed album;)

So, cosmically it all works;) Down to the fact that since MJ died, I have been listening to Thriller and knew I "One Photograph" was missing that ghostly sound, not knowing it was called a Theremin, and Dave heard it too with me saying anything;)

So here we are in the studio tracking Theremins, Rhodes, Prophet 5, violins and cellos on "One Photograph".

xx,
E~

Afternoon Kids:

Happy Sunday! I just finished the saddest song I've probably ever written... but I'm happy because "Who's Sleeping in your Bed" is done!!

Later today, I'm going to the studio to track piano and synths on the remix of "One Photograph", "Shut UP and Listen!" and "The Ones Who Never Talk" with the amazing, Dave Schulz (Goo Goo Dolls, Fuel and Berlin). Hopefully, I'll get some great footage to share:)

Also, I just posted a video of the band in the studio at Archon Sound tracking the last two songs of the album, which has a new title...

The Ones Who Never Talk

So, check out the video below;)

AS WELL, I  NEED YOUR HELP!! I'm making "Out of Time" into a duet with a male singer/songwriter. Who do you think should sing with me?

Specifically, the guy will sing the second verse and all the choruses;) Here is an acoustic version of the song at the Viper Room.

Morning Guys:

It's dreary June gloomy in LA today. We had a great turnout at the show despite Game 3 of the NBA Finals. Sorry Lakers!! Thanks to everyone who made it out at the last minute. Footage coming soon! Special thanks to Steph for filming and to Ariel for sitting and playing with me.

Now from  the Onion:

This is tooooo funny not to share!!!

http://www.theonion.com/content/opinion/but_if_we_started_dating_it

By Kimberly Pruitt

I really like you. I do. You're so nice, and sweet, and you listen to all my problems and respond with the appropriate compliments. But, well, I don't really see a relationship in our future. It would be terrible if we let sex destroy this great friendship we have where I get everything I want and you get nothing you want. Don't you think?
I knew you would understand. You always do.

We're so perfect as friends, you know? I can tell you anything, and you know you can always come to me anytime you need to hear me bitch about work or how ugly I feel. You wouldn't want to ruin a friendship like that just so you could be my boyfriend, and have me look at you with desire and longing in my eyes, if only once—would you? Of course not. Well, if we started dating, it would only complicate this wonderful setup I've got going here.

It's just…you're like my best friend, and I would hate for something you desperately want to change that. I mean, sure, we could go on some dates, maybe mess around a little and finally validate the six years you've spent languishing in this platonic nightmare, but then what? How could we ever go back to the way we were, where I take advantage of your clear attraction to me so I can have someone at my beck and call? That part of our friendship means so much to me.

No. We are just destined to be really, really good friends who only hang out when I don't have a boyfriend, but still need male attention to boost my fragile and all-consuming ego.

Anything can happen once you bring romance in. Think about how awful my last relationship was at the end, remember? The guy I'd call you crying about at 3 a.m. because he wouldn't answer my texts? The guy I met at the birthday party you threw me? I had insanely passionate sex with him for four months and now we don't even talk anymore. God, I would die if something like that happened to us.

Plus, ick, can you even imagine getting naked in front of each other? I've known you so long, you're more like a brother that I've drunkenly made out with twice and never mentioned again. It'd be way too weird. And if we did, then whenever you'd come shopping with me, or go to one of my performances or charity events, or take me for ice cream when I've had a bad day at work, you'd be looking at me like, "I've seen her breasts." God, I can't think of anything more awkward that that.

Oh, before I forget, my mom says hi.

Anyway, you would totally hate me as your girlfriend. I'd be all needy and dramatic and slowly growing to love you. If I was your girlfriend, I would never be able to tell you all about the other asshole guys I date and pretend I don't see how much it crushes you. Let's never lose that. That's what makes us us.

Don't worry. You're so funny and smart and amazing, any girl but me would be lucky to date you. You'll find someone, I know it. And when you do, I'll be right by your side to suddenly become all flirty and affectionate with you in front of her, until she grows jealous and won't believe it when you say we're just friends. But when she dumps you, that's just what we'll be.

Best friends. Friends forever.

Hi Guys and Dolls:

Hope everyone is just grand. I've been busily finishing the album, recording vocals, deciding artwork, distribution, touring, etc...

Next week, we'll be heading back into the studio to work on keys and synths with Dave Schulz of Berlin and Goo Goo Dolls fame. I can't wait to dig in!!

I just posted "Victim of Anything", so come give a listen when you get a sec! In the next month or so the last two songs of the album will be done.

Finally, one night late over the weekend, I wrote what might just be the most poppy song I have ever written.

Piano, subby bass, beats, and vocals- no guitar!

It's called "Saturday Night", and she may just find her way onto the album...
When I get the lyrics off the dry erase board, I will post them for you;)

Also, I never really do this, but this message I got from a fan, just made my heart smile:)

"Just for once i finally found what i've been looking for... a band that plays punk, rock but it has meaning in the lyrics and not some cruddy screamo band."
- Justin C. (16
year old fan from Louisiana)

Thanks for everything!!!!

Hi Guys and Dolls:)

Just curious as to what you kids think of this..... Is this cheating???

Is it just me or does it seem like every contest out there has somebody working on the inside;) Looks can be deceiving...

From Pop Eater.com

______________________________________________________________

Last week, AT&T representatives, whose mobile phone network is the only one that can be used to cast 'Idol' votes, provided the free services at two parties in Arkansas after the final performance episode. During the event, the representatives provided instructions on how to send "power texts," which send 10 or more text messages at one time. According to sources, the power texts have an "exponentially greater effect on voting than do single text messages or calls to the show's toll-free phone lines."

On Wednesday, Fox Broadcasting issued a statement (seen on The Hollywood Reporter) saying that "Fox and the producers of 'American Idol' are absolutely certain that the results of this competition are fair, accurate and verified. Kris Allen is, without a doubt, the American Idol. We have an independent third-party monitoring procedure in place to ensure the integrity of the voting process. In no way did any individuals unfairly influence the outcome of the competition."
AT&T issued a statement saying that "countless parties were held," and that "it's quite a leap to suggest that a few individuals could have impacted the final results."

According to the NY Times, the show broadcasts an on-screen statement at the end of each episode warning that blocks of votes cast using "technical enhancements" that unfairly influence the outcome of voting can be thrown out.
