Current mood:  insubordinate

Here's an article on me based on a recent interview with BPM magazine.

The Ancient Art of Zen
Zen Mechanics

  James Rose-Mathew

Ok,
must confess: this guy is not ancient at all. In fact, he's most likely
not even 30 yet but he didn't mention his age and I didn't ask so who
knows, perhaps mountains of Olay night cream keep this aeons-old
brother looking fit? What I do know is that Zen Mechanics aka Wouter
Thomassen is cutting thick grooves in the vinyl landscape of
psychedelic music.
His
first release appeared in 2004 and since then his music has taken him
around the world to wow crowds all the way from, 'the legendary Boom
festival, a Buddhist temple in Tokyo, the paradise beaches of Brazil,
deep in the Israeli desert too far out in the Australian bush.' He puts
the success down to his continued reverence for 'that big primal
groove' necessary in this genre to 'ignite crowds of thousands.'
Looking at his upcoming year, which is filled again with travels to
delightful parts of the globe, including the Easter Vortex, Japan and
the splendid Ozora festival in Hungary, it appears he has mapped that
primal energy into his DNA and cannot avoid spreading its mantra
wherever he goes.

His sound is so infectious in fact that it has landed him a nomination
as Best Psytrance Artist in the inaugural Beatport Music Awards. When
pressed about what tools this Mechanic requires to craft his sound he
name-drops ' VST's like Sylenth, Imposcar, Stylus rmx and the Native
Instruments stuff.' as well as a healthy diet of ' early Detroit techno
to Psych/Krautrock.' It's a shame that none of these things leak oil,
or manna for that matter, to round out his image and one can't help but
conjure the image of Wouter dj'ing to a lunatic crowd wearing stained
blue overalls, but whatever the recipe, its going down with aplomb. Not
one to rest on his laurels, Wouter is currently very busy working on
material for his 2nd slice of Zen and a clutch of remixes of his
contemporaries.
He
is also putting together an album of chill-out material under the guise
of Transmissions in Bloom, an outfit that allows him to truly 'capture
the essence of the psychedelic experience' so watch out for that
release. And to think that he was dreaming as a lad of becoming a pet
psychiatrist. Your poor bereaved puppy must just accept then that Zen
Mechanics is content treating the psyche of an entirely different
animal!

So after a month of hard labour I'm happy to announce a few upcoming ZM releases, droogies

Tree-D
(Prog/Psy crossover in the vein of Groundcontrol, for the upcoming compilation on Iono recs)

Artificial Sunset
(someone described this as like a Hi Tech hybrid between early X-Dream & Prana...which sounds just fine to me...for the upcoming comp on Neurobiotic recs)

The Bathroom Incident
(a track me and maestro Dick Trevor hammered out in a 3 day session, involving loads of old hardware and rather pissed off downstairs neighbours...It's on Free Spirit's new compilation Plexure, which should be out right about now)

Outward
(a collaboration with Motion Drive for the new London Progressive label Furthur recs...watch out for their debut comp. featuring Ace Ventura, Perfect Stranger, Liquid Soul etc..it's gonna be the supremo)

Ultrasonic
(collaboration with M-Theory, London based upcoming string theorists. This little rocker is gonna be on their debut album, soon the be released on Alchemy recs)

Plus I did some remixes for Allaby's festival anthem  "Glade", the one with THE DROP (for Nano recs) and Rinkadink's classic "Ultima" (for Alchemy recs)
All these will be released within the next 3 months, Godwilling...

Samples will be posted here shortly.

Oh and I got some mails regarding the supposedly 'new' unreleased ZM tracks that are floating around on the web. They are actually like 4/5 years old.
But I hope you can still trade them for a new killaa UNR GMS.

Current mood:  bouncy

Been a while since I wrote something here, so I figured it's time for an update...or apology if you will, to those who've been waiting for new Zen Mechanics material, and those busting my balls to finish their remixes 8)
This delay is simply because I've been playing and travelling almost non-stop since my album release + I have been building a new studio, which ofcourse took much longer then planned.
Anyways I just returned from an amazing month tourin Japan, fully wired and inspired and decided to take a bit of a break from gigs so I can work on my studio tan and hammer out some new tunes for the upcoming summer festies.
Lots of remixes and interesting collaborations are in the pipeline or almost done...

Also I'd like to mention that this year I've been nominated for the annual Beatport music awards, category Best Psytrance Artist.
Although I feel slightly outnumbered by Progressive artists populating this category, I'm honored to share it with 9 other artists who's music I respect.
Also I feel immensly grateful and proud to see that people supported my music...this reminds me once again why I keep doing what I'm doing; making music for you folks.
And I hope you ppl who flipped a hip to my tunes this year, will show their support by voting Zen Mechanics...for a better tomorrow 8)

Current mood:  pissed off

Recently I've been getting mails from ppl asking what's up with my supposed gig at the Indian Spirit festival.
Just to inform you; I'm NOT playing there.

But this doesn't stop the organizers from making false advertisement by keeping my name listed on their website and forums.
Same goes for Sun Control Species (who they never even contacted!).

They decided to take me off the line-up a long time ago because (in their words) "the graphic designer forgot to put my name on the flyer".

Ever since we heard this lame ass excuse, me and Iboga management have made many attempts to contact them and try to take my name off their website,
or at least announce that I'm cancelled, but they simply ignore our mails.

I didn't expect this idiotic, disrespectfull and unprofessional behaviour from a festival like Indian/No Spirit.

promo text:

With under his belt a string of critically acclaimed tracks and remixes on a wide range of top labels, and performances at some of the biggest festivals worldwide; such as Boom, Universo Paralello, Glade and Sonica; Zen Mechanics has created quite a stir.

Neurobiotic records is pleased to bring his debut album 'Holy Cities'; one of this year's most highly anticipated releases. Brimming with deep massive grooves, hypnotic geometric riffs and vast futuristic soundscapes; all merged into a sound that reaches peaks of ethereal epicness and has proven to tantalize many of the world's most switched-on dancefloors.

The crystalline production, mastering by Cass (who worked for Björk and Ministry of Sound) and stunning artwork courtesy of Android, render this album a modern Trance classic.

Ola boys & girls I've just returned from a month in Brazil and about to embark on new adventures in Oz. Will be staying there till april (promoters take note).

Universo Paralello festival was arguably the best NYE party in, like...EVER! It was a fullon alien disco out there under the coconut trees. Heaps of respect and love to the whole Universo family for making this all possible. They have a vision and passion for creating the ultimate Psychedelic festival, and this year it reached perfection. The chillout never looked that good and especially the Goa stage was an amazing addition...like stepping through a rift in time & space and being transported back to a Goa party in its peak days. Kudos to Dickster & Atmos for providing yours truly the best dancefloor experience since...??

Other highlights: Gaudi (warming up for NYE), Tetrameth (toying with our heads & hips), Logica (the project of Dj's Alok & Bhaskar, the 16 yr old wonderboys with their debut live performance), Allaby, Flip Flop, Laughing Budha, Shane Gobi, Ace Ventura, Dickster, the DJ who's name I forgot (something dub?) who kept me locked in the chillout for hours while I had business somewhere else. Also kudos to fellow Dutchies Back to Mars, Riches & Rebelix! Sadly I missed: Perfect Stranger, The first stone, Tristan, Etnica and too much at the Alternative stage. I heard from reliable sources that Edo, James Munro and John's (Flip flop) minimal set were a hoot.

----------

Also my sincere apologies to the ppl who came to see me at the Soulvibes NYE party in Vitoria and found out i was not there, and most of all the organizers. Due to miscommunications with the head of transport, I missed the bus from the festival to the airport and so my flight to Vitoria.

I promise to make it up to all the ppl who were harmed in any way by this situation.

Moving on to the next subject: yes, my album WILL come out....soonish. Can't say exactly which date, but it has been finished and is about to be mastered. For those who still care about this stuff: the artwork and sleeve design are almost done and look simply stunning.

Also there's a Zen Mechanics remix album in the pipeline for later this year, meaning other artists remixing my tunes. Some of my tracks are in the capable hands of: Ace Ventura (already hammering his remix of Holy Cities in his recent livesets), Logica, Allaby, Dickster, The First Stone, Behind Blue Eyes, Flip Flop, Headroom & E-jekt.

And better late than never: a happy new year to all u disco pixies out there. May it be full of Love, Laughter, Prosperity and an abundance of amazing music, art & parties!

Much love,

Wouter
