The shuffling of 100’s of pairs of feet alongside expectant whispers and nervous chatter – could be the start of any other gig except for the atmosphere is pierced by that of a bell to signify assembly time and I’m back in school all over again. That bell used to mean “oh no it’s back to work again!” or “I’m freeeeee!” and now it’s a little of both, for this month anyway.

This school tour is turning into the best set of gigs I’ve ever done. I’ve played a lot in London over the past few years and there is often a stoic silence before (and sometimes during!) my performance. You get the impression people are waiting to be impressed sometimes rather than being on your side right from the start. With the schools it’s so different…largely I realise because the kids are gratefully getting out of certain lessons but also I think because they’re genuinely exited about music. Hearing 500 voices chanting “I’m alright with me” has been pretty special and something I’ve not experienced before. There’s also been some really interesting and fun questions from kids so far:

“Do you write songs to get famous or to get your feelings out?”

“Do you want to be like Michael Jackson…even though you’re the wrong colour can you sing me Thriller?” (I gave it a go…it’s on camera somewhere).

“Who would you have in your ideal band?”

“Why don’t you go on the X-factor?” (!)

“How long does it take to write a song” (I’ll be doing a video blog on this soon).

I’ve felt really inspired by this tour so far and it can only get better, thanks to those who have clapped, cheered or just been there so far.

Keep the questions coming , I’ll be posting a video of our adventures very soon (we could do a feature on road rage  although tour managers Tommy and Sarah have been very patient with my learner driving so far…).

I’m enjoying school a whole lot more this time around! Thanks to all the students and teachers so far for making me feel so welcome.

Next stop Kennington,

The season is turning; I can feel it in the need to stay in bed for an hour longer and my cravings for fire-side drinking and Treacle pudding with custard.

I really love to hibernate but now is not the time as I have to get on the road and begin my school tour. We’re doing a few schools a day every day for a month starting with my very own high school! (I’m amazed they wanted me back…).

Having been in the studio and writing for a while I’m really looking forward to being on the move, playing music and meeting lots of new people.
I’ll also be talking in the schools about bullying, confidence and self esteem – as I think they’re all related.  One of the main things with any kind of bullying is to encourage people to speak out and not keep the issue to themselves but it is tricky….bullying can occur in mainly places from school to the home and anywhere in between and some people don’t feel they have anyone to talk to about these issues. Below are links to two charities that I think are worth checking out on the subject – with ‘Childline’ you can phone and the call won’t come up on a bill or anything so it’s completely anonymous.  The ‘act against bullying’  is part of a ‘cool to be kind’ initiative  which encourages kids to act in a positive way and explores the issue in some depth.

It’s great I’m getting the chance to be part of this and the schools have been really supportive…I was just going to do the one school initially and it’s grown to about 50 and more are coming in each day! I really hope the kids enjoy the show and get something from my ramblings (I’m doing a talk on self confidence and feeling extremely nervous about it!!).

It’s going to be an adventure, having not driven for 4 years it could be even more of an adventure than I anticipate!.. If I can find that damn Tom Tom I’ll be fine….

I’ll be doing some video blogs from the road so look out for those.

I hope everyone’s very well and enjoys these last few dusky days of summer,

PS – you can catch me on the radio today! I’ll be live on BBC Radio Suffolk at 6.15pm, and also on Town FM this evening. Tomorrow evening you can catch me on Splash FM / Bright FM.
