I just posted a few new pictures in my Shows album.  Be sure to check them out. They are from my show at Richard's Cafe a few weeks ago.  My good Spring Hill friends, Dan and Heidi came all the way out to Whites Creek just to get some shots.  They have just started their own photography company called Lotis Blue.  Be sure to check out their website http://lotisbluephotography.com/ and contact them if you need any photos done - they are great people to work with!

I fell in love with a song about love
It's got a perfect rhyme
and I love the story line
there's something familiar bout it's sound
that gets my heart a racin' as it calms me down

Hey guys!  I know it seems like I've disappeared, but I promise I haven't.  I have been spending so much time writing new songs it's ridiculous!  Now, I just need to get them recorded so I can share them out here in cyberspace, but I'm working on it...

I wanted to let you know that my friend and co-writer, Daisy Mallory (www.myspace.com/daisymallory) just posted a song that she and I wrote called "Right Here."  She's also got a new music video for you to check out that I make a guest appearance in.  If you haven't met Daisy or listened to her music please take the time to go to her site.  She is a real treasue and has been such a delight to get to know over the past year.  I will be singing with her on October 21st at The Rutledge in downtown Nashville for her major label showcase - it's open to the public, so come on out and support!

Over the past few months, I've also had a young artist from New York, Correna Ann, record two of my songs ("In the Worst Way" and "Every Side of Me").  The songs were produced by Julian King and you can listen to them at www.myspace.com/correnaann.  Correna and I have started co-writing via skype and I can't wait to get some of our songs recorded.

I can't believe it's already getting cold outside.  The leaves are starting to change here in Nashville....it's going to be a beautiful fall.  I spent last week getting my cabin all decorated with pumpkins and mums.  Baked some of the pumpkin seeds today - yum!   I've turned into quite the cook lately - homemade bread, lasagne, cookies, etc.  I'll have to put some of my recipes out here and let you try them at home! Alright, going to go listen to the rain on my tin roof and maybe write another song...such a spoiled life here in middle TN!

Love,
MistyRae

Hey guys! So, I finally have some new songs out on iTunes. They are just a sample of what I've been writing and working on lately. I am SO excited to share them with you. These two songs are both a little more acoustic than what I did on my last project and are happier lyrics too! (hopefully you don't mind that..haha)

"I Won't Let You Go" - is a song I wrote with Jason Carson. Jason put the whole track together, not to mention sang the backgrounds and happens to be simply amazing. http://...com/qmry9r

"Mystery" - is a song I wrote with Andy Hackbarth...it's the worktape from the day we wrote it...no fancy studio work or anything. We just hit the record button! http://...com/q7letf

Thanks so much for keeping up with me and for all of your support of my music. I'm in the process of saving up funds to buy a MacBook so I can record a new full-length acoustic project and give my little Acer computer to my momma. Downloading these two songs would help me out so much...so please let your friends know, tweet it to the world, myspace it, facebook it... I really do appreciate it.

Love,
MistyRae

So I'm in Starbucks one recent morning waiting for my coffee to get done, & standing next to me is this pretty young lady, very unassuming in general mannerisms & spirit, patiently waiting for her coffee as well.  There's nothing too unusual about that. Franklin Tennessee is a wonderful town, with a lot really grounded young people who were raised from a solid moral & social foundation.

So what made Misty different to me? Nothing really, until the Barista asked her how her music was going. Being the music addict I am, I had to know what she did, so I asked her. I said, I'm a musician also, what do you do with music? Now here's what set Misty apart from most people in the Nashville music scene. She took of humble posture with me right from the start of our conversation, & told me that she teaches vocals & "writes a bit". Later on I'd learn that her writing was more than "just a bit", & would turn out to be more musically significant than a good number of the newly signed artists I've heard in Nashville over the last few years.

I had asked her if she had a MySpace music page, & she said she did. Having been impressed with her humility alone, my years of general experience in music, A&R, & production, were telling me she was musically deeper than she let on. After years of recording female vocalists, you can almost always tell from someone's speaking voice if they will have an interesting &/or quality vocal tone, so I was curious about it.

The first song I heard when I got to her profile was "I won't let you go". (Please go to my profile to listen to these.) Or go directly here:

Now keeping in mind that I've listened to tens of thousands of songs in my life, I was immediately blown over by this song because there was no possible way an artist's soul could come through a song in any purer fashion than Misty's does when she sings this song. The magic of Misty Rae isn't really "magic" at all, it's sheer artistic honesty, without any studio tricks, gimmicks, or cookie cutter lyrical platitudes. When you listen to Misty sing, you automatically realize she doesn't sing about things she doesn't believe in to the depths of her soul. This song is simply a melodic extension of what she believes & feels. Honesty is refreshing in music.. Kind of like walking up to the reception desk of a major corporation these days, & finding out that the flowers on the counter are real ones, & not plastic..

So now I've explained the impact Misty's first track had on me. I said that "there was no possible way an artist's soul could come through a song in any purer fashion than Misty's does when she sings this song."

Well, I meant that when I said it.. But then I heard the next song, Why Couldn't You, which taught me that if anyone could out do Misty Rae in the area of emoting through music, it was probably well... Misty Rae..

You simply have to hear this song to fully appreciate its impact. Words simply fail in any review anyone could write about it. Words do not however fail Misty while she brings you through a heart wrenching melodic account, that only a person brave enough to have Loved & lost can express, with lines like: "You hold me with your eyes & whisper low, & tell me everything a Heart should know".

For such a young artist to be able to make me tear up a little is significant. Not because I'm jaded, but more because I'm tired of artists who clearly haven't lived through any of what they're singing about, & therefore have no ability to pour anything but an anemic version of "soul" into their music!

I asked Misty to send me a CD (which by the way I ended up buying three of to give away.) The first thing that occured to me was that I didn't feel any desire to fast forward through certain songs, like I've sometimes had to do even with those we've come to know as "Legendary Artists" over the years.

While no song on Misty's debut CD 'Love Wins' comes across as filler or a musical afterthought, there are certainly some stand out tracks.

"Just feels good" is a song that makes you feel like cranking it up & maybe turning on the radar detector.  It's happy, its fun, & its as bright as the smile that instantly endears anyone with a pulse to Misty Rae when you meet her.

"More Like You", an unabashed ode to the living God who gives her strength & spirit that has helped make her such a musical dynamo. Musically on par with the likes of Faith Hill, & Lee Anne Womack.

"I Love You Anyway", this is simply songwriting at its best.. A mid tempo ballad that Sheryl Crow would have been proud to have penned, & we all know how she's doing. A song has impact when people can personally relate to it. Not only does this song have that quality, but it's melodically mesmerizing.

"Love Wins", throws out all the cheesy Nashvegas production rules, & lets Misty Rae be real, & sing with her heart in Her throat, & her Soul seemingly resting in the listener's hands. She inspires you, She Loves You, & She Tells You of a hope that can always be remembered & relied upon. Its honesty set to music, & genius in the form of sound.

"Halleluah" & "Be Free", If I've painted too much of a wallflower in my depictions of Misty as an artist or person,  listen to these last two songs on her CD.. Suffice to say that one should never mistake meekness for weakness.

In closing I want to encourage you to Buy this CD, for several reasons, most of which is the fact that you won't be wasting your money on something else that only has one or two good radio cuts on it. It's worth having in anyone's collection who likes Country/Southern influenced rock.

I hesitate to call this a Country recording, because it pleasantly breaks a lot of the unspoken "rules" that the Nashville chattering class are used to following like sheep. Kudos to both her production team (Kenny Royster/Misty Rae), as well as the musicians on the album. Very nice work!

It's a MUST HAVE album.. If you buy it & find you hate it, I'll buy it from you, ok?  You have my word on that, & most of you know my word is as good as gold..

Wow, so it's almost been six months since I last wrote a blog...sorry about that!! What's wrong with me??!!  Well, believe it or not, I haven't fallen off the face of the earth...I just found a different side of it so it seems.

As you've probably noticed, I haven't been playing out near as much as I was back in the fall of '08.  I decided to take a little time to kind of hide away and write some new songs.  I have quite a few new ones and can't wait to get them recorded so you can hear them.  I'm not planning on doing a whole big production this time, I think I'll just leave them plain and simple...just like I like my coffee and my love. ;-)  I do have a song on Arizona country artist, Daisy Mallory's new EP.  Watch for our song to debut on her myspace in the next few weeks - it's called "Didn't I."  Daisy's EP was produced by the one and only Jeff Dayton and recorded at Ronnie's Place here in Nashville.   I've also got a song on my Texas friend, Lindsay Wells' newly released EP called "Can't Have Me."  Her CD was produced by Clayton Corn, keyboardist for Texas mainstay Pat Green.

I've also been very involved with an organization called Musician's On Call.  We go to various hospitals here in Nashville and play for patients.  Today I went to Vanderbilt's cancer and trauma units.  What an incredible experience to be able to connect with people one on one and bring some sort of joy and peace to their room just by playing them a song.  I've also played over at the Vanderbilt's Children's Hospital and Bordeaux, a nursing home/hospital here in Nashville with Musician's on Call.

I've also been spending a little bit of time playing music at the Country Music Hall of Fame.  The CMHOF has a program for grade school students called "Words and Music." Basically what happens in a Words and Music session is a class from a local school will tour the CMHOF, but weeks before they come to the museum they write lyrics for songs that are then sent to songwriters like myself.  It's my job to put music to a few of the students' lyrics and then play the finished songs for the students when they are on their field trip at the museum.  Pretty cool experience...thanks to Jeff Dayton for recommending me for this program!!

Not only have I been writing, playing at the hospital and hanging out at the Hall of Fame, but I've also been busy teaching voice lessons...did you know I've been teaching lessons now for almost 4 years?! Be sure and check out some of my students in my top friends list: Casey Jamerson, Amber Rhodes, Keith Moody, Katie Chance, Alyssa Danley, Taylor Braun and Danya Powell are just a few of my clients.

Aside from music, I've been having a blast hiking, pulling weeds, learning how to make bread, and make soap...and lotion..and shampoo and conditioner too! You could say I've been in a very creative/experimental phase. I recently cut all my long hair off.  Most people who have known me for a long time never thought the day would come when I would let it go.  But playing all those days at the hospital really put some things into perspective for me...so, I cut my hair and donated it to an organization called the Pink Heart Funds.  It's an organization that makes FREE wigs for cancer patients...check out my photos to see my new hair.  I love it - I'm already growing it out so I can cut it all off again!!!

So, that's what's new with me...hopefully you enjoyed the update.  Oh yeah, one more thing...I've completely head over high heels fallen in love with an amazing man...that may or may not have had something to do with me disappearing from myspace for awhile. haha Check out my main man's music at www.myspace.com/jasoncarsonmusic. If you like my song "Won't Let You Go" (which he wrote with me btw) you're going to love his music...promise! ;-)

Be free,
misty

baby we're just at the start
of a love affair wild and free and far from done
i'll spend forever in your arms
even though we both know it won't be long enough
that's the beauty of you
the beauty of us
it's old grey hair
it's rockin chairs and baby
it's just love

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

~Marianne Williamson~

This is one of my favorite quotes.  Hopefully it encouraged you as well. Don't be afraid to turn your light on today... -misty-

So this past weekend, I had the distinct pleasure of meeting and hanging out with one legendary country music guitar player, Leon Rhodes.  If you don't know who Leon is, you are probably 1) Under the age of 40 or 2) Not a classic country music listener.   Don't worry, when my friends at Redentore Guitars asked me if I wanted to come spend the weekend with Leon at the Grand Ole Opry, I said "sure" but really had no clue the history in the fingers of this guitar picker.  But luckily everyone had grace to overlook my ignorance, and through pictures and lots of stories I learned just how influential this 70-something spry "kid" has been to country music.

Leon was born a guitar player.  He got his first guitar at 14 and never had a lesson in his life…it's all just from the heart. As his wife Judy says, "It really is a gift." Over the course of his career, Leon played on the Big D Jamboree in Dallas, was on the road 7 years with Ernest Tubb as one of the Texas Troubadours, had a 20 year stint on the classic TV series Hee Haw, and is a regular guitarist for many artists on The Grand Ole Opry (He even has his own parking space).  He has also played on almost every traditional country record.  If you've ever listened to an old record and heard "Ahh…Leon" just before a great guitar solo, I can bet you it's Leon Rhodes playing those beautiful licks.  I could go on and on about Leon's accomplishments, but I bet you anything if I did, he'd just grin and say something ornery to deflect any recognition.

So how did the Redentore team and I end up hanging out with Leon Rhodes? Well, that's the really cool part.  On Saturday's show at the Grand Ole Opry, Leon decided to play the Redentore's Santissimo.  Talk about a great debut!!!  Not only was it fun to see everyone ooing and ahhing over Mark Piper's creation, it was also fun to see the inner workings of country music's most legendary stage.  The first thing Leon told me as we pulled up to the opry was, "Now, get yourself some coffee and find your seat on the stage."  I asked him, "They let you drink coffee on the stage?"  He grinned and said, "I know it's great."  I was in Heaven, not only was I getting to enjoy great country music but I got to drink coffee too!! (For those of you that know me, you know how exciting this was)  So that's exactly what we did…I'm sure Mark, Dian and I all looked like kids in a candy store.

Backstage was amazing.  I got to meet Little Jimmy Dickens, Connie Smith, Marty Stuart, The Whites, Jack Greene, and so many of the fabulous house musicians.  What was cool was seeing how everyone respected Leon.  It was also amusing to me that Leon had no idea who Keith Urban was. (He was on the show too..wow)  I also met the official pickle man..yes, that's right…the official pickle man of the Grand Ole Opry.  He comes twice a year from North Carolina and brings Mt. Olivet pickles to all the artists and folks backstage.  I never heard the reasoning behind it, but he was very sweet…and so were his pickles.  Speaking of sweet things, it was also Marty Stuart's birthday, so there was cake!! What more could you want…cake, pickles, coffee and country music.

After the Opry on Saturday night, Leon took us over to a great café across the street called Rudi's Country Music Café.  If you like traditional country music, you have GOT to go over there.  You'll find Diane Berry singing all the old standards all day long.  You may even find Leon over there playing too.  They are open till 3am on Saturday and serve a mean breakfast starting at 12:30am.  And I tell you that kid Leon, played right up until 3am.  I was exhausted and he was just getting started.  Another highlight of being at Rudi's was the opportunity I had to get up and sing some old country standards with Leon playing guitar.  I sang songs that were originally performed by Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton, Crystal Gayle, etc.  One of my favorites was singing the legendary "You Don't Know Me" …so much fun.

All good things come to an end I suppose or at least hit the pause button, but talk about a weekend I will NEVER forget.  We made it back to Leon's house about 4am Saturday (really Sunday morning) and stood out in the drive talking a little more.  He kept saying, "I didn't know you could play guitar Misty" (He was lying, but it made me laugh)  Then just as I was heading towards my car, Leon stops me and says, "You know, you're a pretty good guitar player.  Almost excellent…nah, I'm just teasing it was excellent."  I just smiled and said "Ahh…Leon."

Check out my pictures to see it in color! ;)

No you don't know the one

Who dreams of you each night

And longs to kiss your lips

Longs to hold you tight

And anyone can tell

You think you know me well

But you don't know me
