The Hunab Kru is a Bboy and Bgirl collective based in Asheville, NC. There is no place quite like Asheville, and especially no other place in NC. The Hunab Kru was formed via a community class that remains active today and was started back in 1999. Over the years, students and dancers have come and gone, but a core group of Bboys and Bgirls have discovered this art form as a lifestyle. To be an Artist in Education has been my goal for the last 4 years. I am commited to the idea that children can inrease their self awareness and self esteem, gain respect for and appreciate diversity, get excercise, and express themselves creatively through Breakin'. I feel that proper guidance is a must, and what I teach above all else is that this dance is about self discipline and self awareness. The classes I teach are modified to be age appropriate, but the message remains the same - Have fun and express yourself! Breakin' has contributed to my life in countless positive ways. I have many creative interests, but none have taught me important life lessons in the way that breakin' has. In my youth I used to break in the park almost everyday. It was 1984 in a Gov. Housing Project in Roanoke , VA. I remember watching TV when I saw none other than Joey Lawrence poppin' on 'Gimme a Break' with Nell Carter. Those weren't the days (whoa). However, there were people who made a big difference in my childhood by helping me believe in myself. Trust me, I needed a little help. I was certainly an At-Risk youth, but I was lucky enough to trust people. Hopefully now I can empower kids with self determination and hope. For the Hunab Kru and me, the time is always now. We hope to see you at a performance sometime, or at the weekly session held on Wednesday from 7 - 9pm at Stephens Lee Recreation Center on Max St. (off of S. Charlotte St.). I will always remain commited to improvement, and I look forward to the opportunities that allow my growth.
