Alabama Blues Machine "Must Be Love" R2 Records By Peter "Blewzzman" Lauro © March 2009 I love the feeling I get when I hear the first notes of a new disc from a band I've never heard of, and those notes - as a smile appears on my face - have me thinking I'm going to like what I'm about to hear. Occasionally, first impressions can be deceiving, but that was not the case with "Must Be Love", by the Alabama Blues Machine. They nailed it on this disc. As with all machines, it's reliable and quality parts that make it run smooth and the parts that do that for the Alabama Blues Machine are: Bruce Andrews, Lead Vocals & Harp; Ross Roberts, Lead Guitar; Clay Swafford, Keyboards; John Jackson, Bass; Lewis Ross, Drums; Mike Lingo, Trombone; Rick White, Trumpet; John Remley, Saxophone; Maggie "Blue" Glass, Background Vocals. The disc is the first for the band and it consists of seven, all original tracks. Those earlier mentioned very impressive first notes came from "Hindsight", the smokin' opening track. This one features the whole band and they were all up to the task. With everyone getting in some hot licks, while in a track long jam behind them, Bruce and Ross belt out some scorching blues on vocals and guitar. "Clay's Boogie" is a fast and furious instrumental that should not be listened to by the faint of heart or while operating a motor vehicle. I can't imagine anyone listening to this number and maintaining control of their body parts - mine seemed to have minds of their own. This one features the horn and rhythm sections wildly kickin' some ass. Because it's a way too short two minute track that I wanted to hear about thirty minutes of, I literally played it over about fifteen times. I'd buy this disc just to hear this one. PHEW! "Double "R" Shuffle" is another short and sweet one. The Double R refers to Ross Roberts, the songs' writer and featured artist. This instrumental has the guys jamming hard behind him while he does his thing on lead guitar. More good stuff right here. "Black Widow Baby" features Ross and Bruce once again working their magic, with some great rhythm from John and Lewis to back them up. These four are all at discs best right here. More highlights include Maggie's background vocals and sultry whispers and moans. I would have loved hearing her on more of the tracks. It's interesting that the closing track describes what "Must Be Love", has been doin' since the opening track, - "Rockin' Me Baby". This one happens to be one of the longest tracks on the disc, and when these guys are in the groove they're constantly in, that's a good thing. Midway through the song, the piano and horn section team up and what they do together may very well be the discs highlight. Other tracks on what I am calling one of the front runners for the 2009 Blewzzy Award - "Must Be Love" , include the title track, "Must Be Love" and "LaQuita". Although the members of the Alabama Blues Machine all have impressive individual resumes, as a group they have not been together all that long. It's this writers opinion that should this ensemble stay intact, there's no question they will be a force to be reckoned with in the blues world. I'm looking forward to hearing lots more from the Alabama Blues Machine. Check the band out at www.alabamabluesmachine.com and be sure to tell them you stopped by to see what the Blewzzman is fussin' about. While you're there, do yourself a big favor and grab a copy of "Must Be Love". Peter "Blewzzman" Lauro

MOTOR CITY JOSH "FORTY FOUR" A TRIBUTE TO HOWLIN' WOLF FORD MUSIC COMPANY BY PETER "BLEWZZMAN" LAURO © FEBRUARY 2009 Over the many years - and it's getting close to forty-four - that I've been a fan of this glorious music they call the blues, I've unfortunately had the displeasure of hearing many a so called blues singer destroy a song while unsuccessfully attempting to sound like the original artist of the cover he was singing - especially if it was a cover of a HOWLIN' WOLF song. Thankfully, this is not the case here. According to MOTOR CITY JOSH, fourteen years of smoking and singing every night has actually given him a WOLF like voice. Now from a healthy point of view, I don't know how good that really is, but it's just what the doctor ordered for the making of this disc. JOSH absolutely nailed it. On "FORTY FOUR", MOTOR CITY JOSH on amazing vocals, guitar, slide guitar & tambourine, is joined by: JOHNNY RHOADES on guitar & backup vocals; CHRIS DOUGLAS on standup & electric bass; JUSTIN HEADLEY on drums; SHAWN MC DONALD on piano & organ; STACIA FORD & ERIC SAVAGE on backup vocals; JASON RICCI on harmonica and the honoree himself, CHESTER BURNETT on backup vocals. With all thirteen tracks being blues classics, it's going to be real hard to just pick a handful to mention, so I'll go with a "SPOONFUL". On this one, JOSH cleverly inserts audio clips of the WOLF himself singing backup and the results are masterful. Hearing them both singing together assures this was a perfect project for JOSH. Just as on the original, the rhythm - provided by CHRIS & JUSTIN - is killer. With JOSH sounding as good as WOLF on the vocals and JASON blowing the harp like some of the masters that played it with WOLF, they're amazing together on "BACK DOOR MAN". "SITTIN' ON TOP OF THE WORLD" may musically be the best track on "FORTY FOUR". It's a slow, soft ballad in which the music is actually more profound than the vocals and everyone is so sharp and precise. It's one of the few tracks that allow SHAWN to shine on piano, and that's a good thing. This is great stuff! All I can say about "LITTLE RED ROOSTER" is that this one is all JOSH. C'mon, we're talkin' "LITTLE RED ROOSTER", here... and that means lots of raspy vocals with equal amounts of scratchy slide guitar. Josh covers them both very nicely. Maybe it's because I can relate, but "BUILT FOR COMFORT" was always my favorite HOWLIN' WOLF song. This version is an all out free for all between the lead guitar, the harmonica and the drums - with no apparent loser. This one's hot. If you plan to boogie all night long then turn up the volume and put on "WANG DANG DOODLE". It's no secret this tracks a smoker - regardless of who does it - but JOSH and the guys take it up a notch (yes, it's is possible). Great lead and rhythm guitar and wicked drum work highlight this highlight. "FORTY FOUR" closes with "GOIN' DOWN SLOW". As we all know, this one's a slow blues burner. It's highlighted by great slide guitar by JOSH, smokin' lead guitar riffs by JOHNNY and solid and steady organ by SHAWN. Other classics on the disc are: the title track, "FORTY FOUR", "EVIL IS GOING ON", "300 LBS OF JOY" (another one I can relate to), "I AIN'T SUPERSTITIOUS", "SMOKESTACK LIGHTNIN", and "MEET ME AT THE BOTTOM". If you're a fan of HOWLIN' WOLF - and who isn't - you're going to want this disc. You can pick it up, along with his other nine releases, at www.motorcityjosh.com. By the way, make sure you check out his schedule as well. Josh has assured me that on his 2009 tour, along with the best of his originals, he'll be performing this CD - in it's entirety. So when ya see him, be sure to tell him the Blewzzman sent ya.Peter "Blewzzman" Lauro Blues Editor @ www.Mary4Music.com

~The 2008 BLEWZZY Award~
Last year was a rough year for the Blues. Gas
prices caused havoc for road bands, the economy caused many more blues clubs to
close and yada, yada, yada, we all know the deal - there's certainly no need for
a review.
On a bright note, Mary and I - at www.Mary4Music.com - hung in there another
year. As a matter of fact, 2008 was our tenth anniversary, and as long as all of
you continue giving us the support you have thus far, we'll hope to stick around
a bunch more years.
Back in 2002 we decided that we would give an
"Honorary Award" for the "Best CD" that we reviewed and promoted that year, and
later on - in 2006 - we started awarding a second BLEWZZY for the "Song of the
year". The criteria is plain and simple. There are no deadlines or restrictions
and we don't even care about issue dates of the discs. If our clients sent us a
disc that was, in our opinion, worthy of recommendation, we reviewed and
promoted it. From those submissions, I, Blewzzman Pete, pick my favorite and the
fictitious, yet coveted "BLEWZZY" is bestowed upon the winner.
This year, we were summoned to work on 36 discs -
Blues CD & DVD Reviews.
As usual, they came from all over the world, from current and I'm sure some
future legends, from IBC / BMA / GRAMMY / JUNO / MAPLE Award nominees and
winners, from some very dear friends and from some artists who although their
music will be with us forever - they no longer are.
Now, please join me in congratulating Mr. DONALD
RAY JOHNSON as the winner of the 2008 BLEWZZY. His "PURE PLEASURE" CD, although
several years old, was this years best submission. To read the complete review

When I wrote about JOEY GILMORE'S CD titled
"BLUESMAN", I recall saying "If enough of the right people get to hear this
disc, GRAHAM DROUT may just have himself a "song of the year" nomination for
this very well penned track". The track I was referring to was called "BLUES ALL
OVER YOU" and that song is indeed the winner of the 2008 BLEWZZY for best song.
Congratulations to GRAHAM, and to JOEY for the fine job he did recording the
song. To read the complete review, click here - JOEY GILMORE - and if your

Once again, thanks to all the musicians for
sending us your discs - even the one's on the cutting room floor. As I told you
back then - it was never because of lack of quality, it was just about my
preference of blues styles.

PLANET FULL OF BLUES (SELF TITLED CD) BY PETER "BLEWZZMAN" LAURO © JANUARY 2009 The nucleus of PLANET FULL OF BLUES is the duo of JOHNNY RAY LIGHT on Guitars & Lead Vocals and BROCK HOWE on Drums & Background Vocals. Their self titled release "PLANET FULL OF BLUES", which consists of eleven originals by JOHNNY, features the following special guests: JAMES ALBRIGHT on Bass; ERIC STARK on Trumpets and Horn Arrangements; RICHARD YEAGER on Saxophones; PAUL DRAPER on Hammond B3 Organ; and LARRY GANN on Percussion and Background Vocals. I'd also like to give credit to BETTY "MS. SHABOOM" CREDLE......not so much for being the discs Cover Model, but for the great sense of humor she obviously has. Seeking medical help for his ailments, JOHNNY felt a bit relieved when his doctor said "There's nothing wrong with you.....you "GOT THE BLUES". Avoiding the 'Take two aspirin and call me in the morning' remedy, Johnny's doctor flat out told him "There's nothing you can do, when you got the blues - you just gotta move your shoes". Alright Doc! This track features great vocals and hot guitar from JOHNNY and fierce rhythm from BROCK, JAMES and PAUL on the drums, bass & Hammond. Real good stuff right here. "PLANET FULL OF BLUES", The title track and bands moniker, is one of three tracks that will have you wishing ERIC & RICHARD appeared on more than just these three - their horns are fabulous and certainly one of this tracks highlights. The others are BROCK creating a frenzy on the drums and more strong vocals and guitar from JRL. Slowing things down a bit is a beautiful ballad titled "COMING FROM A FRIEND". The whole bands fallen into a soothing groove and it sounds real nice. Although I've heard a slight resemblance to Blood, Sweat & Tears since the opening, JOHNNY'S vocals will surely perk up the David Clayton-Thomas fans ears. If you like your blues on the funky side, then here's one for your "MONEY". ERIC & RICHARD are back on the horns, and with killer company from BROCK & JAMES on drums and bass, they're funkin' this one up big time. If you're not movin' while this one's on then either you ears or your arteries are clogged. By now, you all know what it means when I say a particular track on a disc is my personal favorite. On "PLANET FULL OF BLUES", that track is "MAN TAMER" - and yes, it's 'cause it the bluesiest track of them all. With the rhythm section in just the right spot behind them, JOHNNY & PAUL shine. Of course, there are some great blues guitar licks and gritty vocals from JOHNNY and PAUL - at discs best, has that Hammond hummin'. Replays are in order here. Other tracks on "PLANET FULL OF BLUES", include: "PAIN WILL MELT AWAY", "YOU CAN'T ALWAYS BE RIGHT", "MISS HER SMILE", "DIRTY PAINS", "WHEN WILL YOU SEE THINGS MY WAY" and a fast and frenzied closing instrumental called "E-JAM". You know the drill. Now it's time for you to go to www.planetfullofblues.com to buy the disc and tell JOHNNY & BROCK that the Blewzzman sent ya. Peter "Blewzzman" Lauro

From Blind Pig Records....
NAPPY BROWN DIES AT AGE 78 Nappy Brown, highly influential singer and R&B pioneer, passed away peacefully in his sleep at 10:30 pm this past Saturday at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina. The 78 year old performer had been hospitalized for several months.
Although Brown was a well-known star in the mid 1950s with a string of hits on the Savoy label, he had largely disappeared from public view a decade later. Few knew that he was such a great, ground-breaking vocalist back then who had an enormous influence on a lot of R&B singers, including a young Elvis Presley, who used to come out to see Nappy whenever he performed in Memphis.
Brown's career and legendary status were redeemed from obscurity with the release of Long Time Coming on Blind Pig Records in September of 2007. Critically acclaimed as a brilliant comeback album, the CD led to Brown's being re-discovered and heralded for his role as the forefather of rhythm & blues. He was invited to perform on Garrison Keillor's popular "Prairie Home Companion," was featured on the cover of Living Blues magazine, was honored by the State of South Carolina with a "Nappy Brown Day," and received two Blues Music Award nominations from the Blues Foundation. In one of his final performances, he brought down the house at the Blues Music Awards show in Mississippi in May.
Nappy reveled in the new found attention, both touched and thrilled to have his talent and place in history recognized. As he told his producer, Scott Cable, "I feel like I'm back on top!" Said Cable, "It was a blessing for Nappy that he was able to experience that adulation. He was at first incredulous about it and always felt very lucky to have a second chance in the spotlight. And he was always very demonstrative about how appreciative he was of all the media attention, the fan interest, and the help of the record label in reviving his career."
Blind Pig President Edward Chmelewski said, "It was so gratifying to be able to bring attention to such a deserving but unrecognized legend in American music and to see how happy it made him. We feel honored and grateful to have worked with and documented the art of one of the most outstanding and important musicians of the past fifty years."
Brown's performing career ended in June when he was hospitalized with a series of ailments. In his last conversation with his wife Ann, Nappy said that this last year was the best of his life and was brought to tears by reading all of the cards and letters from fans. He told her he never realized who he was and how many people cared.
Funeral services are being arranged for this Saturday, September 27, at St. Paul's Baptist Church in Charlotte. Both the Rhythm & Blues Foundation and MusicCares have announced that they will help defray funeral expenses.

SUPER CHIKAN "SUM' MO' CHIKAN" CHIKAN HAWSE RECORDS BY PETER "BLEWZZMAN" LAURO © SEPTEMBER 2008 Although JAMES "SUPER CHIKAN" JOHNSON has barely been on the blues scene a mere ten years, until very recently, he's managed to fly under my blues radar. It wasn't until just a few short months ago, at the "Springing The Blues Festival" in Jacksonville Beach. FL, that I was finally exposed to his music, and I immediately became a fan. As the expression goes, better late than never. "SUM' MO' CHIKAN", is the fourth release for SUPER CHIKAN, and having heard it has certainly whet my appetite for a 'LOT MO' CHIKAN'. On this project, which consists of twelve original tracks, SUPER CHIKAN - on Vocals, Guitar and Chikantar, is joined by DADDY RICH on Bass, JAMEISA "PINKY" TURNER on Drums and LAURA "LALA" CRAIG ..boards. Collectively the band is fittingly known as SUPER CHIKAN AND THE FIGHTING COCKS. The opening track is an instrumental called "FREDDY'S THANG". It's a smokin' jam that quickly introduces the listener to each of the band members' high level of talent. With his unique style of play, SUPER CHIKAN does things I promise you you've never heard come from a guitar, DADDY and PINKY make it obvious the rhythm's gonna be hot throughout the disc and LALA'S piano playin' demonstrates why she's going to be perking some ears in the blues community. Even though it's a song about yodeling, "HOOKIN' UP" just plain tears it up. It's a cleverly written track describing some banter between SUPER CHIKAN and his mother. It seems she's concerned her son's yodeling has him sounding like a "white boy" and she'd prefer he yodel more like JOHN LEE HOOKER used to. Some of the discs best guitar and hottest rhythm are surely to be heard on this smoker. Wasps, snakes and bees seem to have given SUPER CHIKAN a bad case of those "YARD BOY BLUES". This is blues the way I love it - slow and lowdown with lots of scorching blues guitar riffs. This is absolutely one of the discs best. "MEXICO CITY" is another track that features the fabulous FIGHTING COCKS getting in their share of licks. Behind more furious guitar work from their leader, the rhythm section is again peaking and LALA - whom, since that day in Jacksonville Beach, I have been calling 'The female DR. JOHN' - is absolutely ripping up the piano. Before you listen to "LOVE CRUISER", make sure you've got your dancin' shoes on. This one's gonna get you movin' faster than a chased chicken. Everyone seems to be simultaneously peaking on this hot jam. If you can figure out where "SIPPI'SEEKAN'SAW" is, then you'll know the exact place that SUPER CHIKAN"S talkin' 'bout as he sings about the things he's done and the places he's been. This is typical of his witty, humorous and very factual songwriting. Other tracks on this absolutely super disc by SUPER CHIKAN include: "CRYSTAL BALL EYES", "NOVEMBER NIGHTS", "FULL MOON BLUES", "PETER TRUCK", "CRYING ABOUT THE BLUES" and "COOCHIE DADDY". You can, and really should, visit SUPER CHIKAN at www.superchikan.com. While you're there, do yourself two big favors - pick up some of his music and read his very interesting bio. Jake Lear"Love and Charm" The resemblances are absolutely uncanny. Although there would be a small degree of uncertainty involved, looking at JACK LEAR'S picture - while listening to his music, would surely have me thinking that I might be listening to BOB DYLAN.....on steroids! It's kinda like BOB DYLAN singing the blues while playing like CHUCK BERRY. In spite of never having been a really big fan of BOB'S folksy style, I always did appreciate his musicianship and songwriting. JACK LEAR possesses all those talents with an abundant supply of exuberance. On his debut CD - "LOVE AND CHARM" - JAKE LEAR, on vocals and guitar, is joined by CARLOS ARIAS on bass, BRAD GORDON on drums, and PETE RUDDLE on harmonica. The disc contains thirteen tracks, of which nine are originals, with a cover of ROBERT JOHNSON, ELMORE JAMES, RICHARD RABBIT BROWN and, of course, BOB DYLAN. The opening track, an original called "KISS ME", already has me thinking I may be listening to the discs best track. It's a smoker that could even get Beethoven to roll over. With the rhythm section absolutely wild behind him, JAKE is even wilder on lead guitar. It doesn't get any hotter than this one. "CRY, CRY, CRY" is just what PETE'S making the harmonica do on this one. I guess he wanted to get in the licks he missed on the opening burner. His doing so, along with more great rhythm, highlight this one. "DUST MY BROOM" is a classy rendition of a classic song. CARLOS and BRAD, on bass and drums, are on top of their game here, and some of JAKE'S best guitar work is heard on this one as well. "SURE ENOUGH I DO" mean it when I say this less than three minute track is way too short. I could have taken a few more minutes of JAKE'S soulful vocals and the hot guitar licks he put out on this ELMORE JAMES cover. "LEAVE THIS TOWN" is another smoker. JAKE, CARLOS and BRAD are unbelievably tight together. This is one rhythm section that JAKE needs to keep together. This listener would hate to hear that these guys would ever want to 'leave this town'. Other great tunes on "LOVE AND CHARM" include: "LOVE AND CHARM", "TROUBLE IN MY MIND, TROUBLE IN MY SOUL", "EARLY IN THE MORNING", "NORTH MISSISSIPPI BOUND", "LORD PROTECT MY CHILD", "RUTH'S BOOGIE" and "JAMES ALLEY BLUES". Now that you're done reading this, take yourself over to www.jakelear.com and grab a copy of "LOVE AND CHARM". Jake's got a heck of an offer going on that includes shipping. JOEY GILMORE "BLUESMAN" EMANCIPATION MEDIA This is going to be an absolutely enjoyable and extremely easy review to compose. Being a good friend of JOEY'S and having seen him perform live at least 100 times, I could easily do this from memory and admiration. However, because most of the tracks on JOEY GILMORE'S newest disc, "BLUESMAN", are new, I will delve into several of my favorites. On this project, JOEY GILMORE on Guitar and Vocals, is joined by: GEORGE CALDWELL on Bass, RAUL D. HERNANDEZ on Drums, BOB ABERNATHY on Hammond Organ, Piano and Keyboards and REGI OLIVER on Tenor & Alto Saxophones - all of whom are regular members in his current band. Additional musicians appearing are: JEAN EZELL on Background Vocals; JOE BEARD, JR. on Rhythm Guitar; BOB "BLUESBOBBY" WEINBERG on Harmonica. After a short little intro, "BLUESMAN" opens with "BLUES ALL OVER YOU" - which is sort of the title track. It's a comparison of how people in various occupations may come home from work. Whereas the junk man's never clean and the car repair man smells like gasoline, the fireman's face is full of soot and the soldier's got blisters on his foot, when the blues man comes home from work he'll get his blues all over you. If enough of the right people get to hear this disc, GRAHAM DROUT may just have himself a "song of the year" nomination for this very well penned track. The lyrics, the way JOEY delivers them, and some great sax work from REGI make this one of the discs absolute best. JOEY sings his heart out on "BIT OFF MORE THAN I CAN CHEW", an eight minute scorching and soulful ballad. It's stuff like this that gives him the credentials to claim, as he did in the previous track, that "I am a bluesman". More smoking sax from REGI and great keyboards from BOB help make this another impressive track. When you only wear black shoes, and you're a size ten, finding a pair of size fourteen "WHITE SHOES" in your closet is never a good thing. Hot rhythm from GEORGE and RAUL, heat this funky JOEY GILMORE original. Interestingly, one of the best versions of "LAST TWO DOLLARS" that I ever recall hearing was from one of JOEY'S counterparts - another South Florida bluesman named JUNIOR DRINKWATER. However JOEY, as he pretty much does on covers, nails it on his version. His intense vocals and blues guitar work, along with steady Hammond and piano plying by BOB, highlight this one. Hearing JOEY sing "I GOT THE BLUES" makes you want to actually respond by saying "You sure do JOEY, you sure do". With some good rhythm going on behind him, and some worthy assistance from JEAN on the background vocals, this one's pretty much all JOEY. Unquestionably, this one features him at discs best on guitar. Other tracks on "BLUESMAN" include: "YOU PUT THE RUSH ON ME", "THINGS I USED TO DO", "WISHING WELL", "HOW BLUE CAN YOU GET" and "GHOSTS OF MISSISSIPPI". At the risk of sounding presumptuous, I honestly feel that with the knowledge I have of JOEY GILMORE'S music and the many ensembles his bands have consisted of, I can confidently say that this is one of his strongest supporting casts and that "BLUESMAN" is - by far - his best effort yet. Ya gotta go to www.joeygilmore.net and pick up a copy. And while you're there, tell the Bluesman that this Blewzzman sent you. Peter "Blewzzman" Lauro
