Gunsmoke worth staying up late on a Sunday.
Some bands, well, they
suck; others are the complete opposite. When the latter play, you hear
“it.” The one ineffable quality making them stand apart form the crowd,
like Ottawa’s Gunsmoke, who made staying up late on a Sunday worthwhile
at the Slice, May 3 with local psychobilly/punk band The Phantom Creeps. The
Creeps put on an energetic and tight set. But Gunsmoke was in another
stratosphere all together, winding up the last show of a three-week
tour with a blast and a tight, hyperactive set of 45 minutes and 15
some original songs which would do the Ramones proud as far as speed
and stealth goes. Unfortunately, Sam Freeborn’s vocals were drowned out, as his brother
Adam tore at his white standup bass like he was trying to strangle it.
Lead guitarist Ben Hurlow’s fingers were ablaze while drummer Phil
Lemieux was impressive on the skins.

Alright, lots of stuff. First, we got a new drummer. He’s a good
friend and neighbor and happens to be a wicked drummer also…what are
the odds?? His name is Phil, check his other band out here:

Second, we've finished booking our US tour….leaving October 22nd, and
returning November 16th i think…sometime around then anyways. Check
our myspace for dates.
Third, weve recorded a demo for our 2nd album, in which were hoping
to release in the spring of ‘09. We’ll be posting a song from it
before we leave for tour.
Same deal, we’ll be posting videos as we travel! This time, i’ll try
not to lose the camera half way through the trip….but check our the
vids and comment! we like to hear from our friends.

A year since we last posted? hmmm....in that case, we have a lot of news to share!
First of all, we have a "new" drummer, Matt. He’s added a more aggresive style to our songs, which is always a good thing! We also have our first album recorded, and ready to go...it’ll be released in the summer, expect early July.
New album, means we are touring for a good chunk of the summer...We are doing western Canada, and have finalized a bunch of dates already....check back to see if we’re playing your city!
We will also have tons of merch to sell by then as well!
and we should probably try to post here more often eh...

Howdy all, its about time we give you guys an update on what the band is doing and our plans for the summer....
Well were in the process of building a studio in our house so we can start recording our album. It should be up and running by May 1st. So while we've been building, we've also been writing new material for our upcoming album. (expect it to be very diverse, from honky-tonk country to upbeat psychobilly)
The album should be out sometime in the late summer, along with shirts, posters, and all that other merch stuff. A name will be decided once the songs are recorded, to see what kind of feel we get from the songs, and what songs we even want on it!
We have a few shows coming up in Toronto, NYC and here in Ottawa...we were thinking about heading out west this summer, but we feel having a good quality/full-length album is more important now and we'll see what happens after that!
If were playing in a town near you, stop by and get drunk with us!
See ya soon,
Sam

Gunsmoke - The Kitchen Sessions: Lets stick with Rockabilly for a few minutes here, O.K.? As you may have picked up on by now I am not a fan of Psychobilly, which is an odd thing. I love Rockabilly, I love Punk, and I love Horror films, all three being major parts of the Psychobilly genre. But I've just never been able to get into it. In my opinion Rockabilly was Punk to begin with, so combining it with the speed of Punk is just a bit silly, and the only way the speed in it sounds right is if you have some really solid musicians throughout the band. One mediocre musician will kill the songs, and most Psychobilly bands will have one mediocre musician in the band. The use of Horror films has always just been a bit silly, as most of these bands also deal with necrophilia as a main topic. I've just never caught the connection with Rockabilly and Horror films. Maybe Ed Wood was a member of a Rockabilly trio at one point. I don't know. All this brings us around to Gunsmoke, a band who bills themselves on their page as "Rockabilly / Country / Punk". Whenever I see "Rockabilly" and "Punk" mentioned together I instantly think the band is going to be Psychobilly. Well, surprise, surprise! Gunsmoke is actually a rather refreshing change in the style of Rockabilly! Now, there is no doubt this band is Rockabilly, the guitar riffs, slap bass, drumming, everything is Rockabilly. But underneath it all there is no doubt this band was influenced by the Punk scene. This influence shows up in the vocals, such as the chorus of "Watch It Burn" and especially in the killer tune "Not The One". The band also plays it smart in that they don't try and do the super-speed thing. The musicianship is just fine, but at a higher speed it may not have held it together as well as it does at the mid-pace that they stick to. At the time this disc was recorded the band had been together for 3 months! That's a pretty crazy idea. They seem much more comfortable than that, and much smoother. So either these guys will be stunning in a few years time, or this is all a crazy little fluke. Oh, and by the way, they're another band from Canada. I'm telling you, that damn country is starting to scare the crap out of me!
