January 9: The return from the holiday break found the Freshman B team on the right track, compiling a 2 - 1 record since the return. They started off with their squad depleted against Spring Woods, (yes boys, you do have to show up for practice during the holidays) but managed to pull out a 15 - 14 victory. In one of the slowest paced games around, the score was a whopping 2 - 0 at the end of the first quarter. Then the Spartans got untracked, and rolled to a 12 -1 half-time lead, with Zac Smith, Tyler Bartlett and Calvin Blair leading the way with their scoring and rebounding. Spring Woods mounted a second half charge scoring six in the third and seven in the fourth. Although we only managed to score three points in the whole second half, that was enough to secure the win. Then it was off to Aldine to face their always tough team. Running into a very aggressive team with a lot of speed, the Spartans battled back to be down by only three at the break. In the second half, Aldine switched to taking the ball down inside, and started to quickly pull away. A number of steals by Colin Brown and Tyler Bartlett brought hope to the team, and Tyler (8 points) kept up the scoring for the Spartans. Good rebounding from Zac Smith, Calvin Blair and Frank Hayes helped to give our boys opportunities to get back into the game. Aldine just proved to be to tough, and hit everything they shot, to pull away with a 29 - 16 victory over Stratford. It was back home to face off with Northbrook. With a definite height advantage, our Spartans roared out to a 13 - 2 first quarter lead. Utilizing a zone defense throughout the game, and good defensive play from everyone, the Spartans hit their shots and got rebounds on both ends of the floor. Bartlett again led all scorers with 10 points, and eight Spartans ended up scoring in the game, including backup point guard Deary Hudson, who hit two three pointers in the second half. Steals were the name of the game again for Colin Brown and Sandor Kato, and great overall inside games from both Toby Agbasi and Calvin Blair, the monsters of the boards, each getting seven rebounds. Final score, Stratford 33, Northbrook 9.
Dec 21:
The B boys faced off with the MacArthur Generals this past week. The first half turned out to be the best half of basketball we've had all year. It was obvious from the beginning that Mac would use their quickness and speed, and height inside, to try and up-end the Spartans. Stratford came out strong, playing good defense and moving the ball around. Staying with Mac throughout the quarter, we were down by two at the end of the 1st period, 10 - 8. The second period saw the Spartans come on strong, and hitting their shots, in particular from 3 point land. John White comes off the bench providing a needed spark, quickly grabbing a steal, hitting a three, and then a nice lay-up after a feed from Colin Brown, and all this in less than 30 seconds!!! Mac then countered with a full court press, and then started feeding the ball down inside to their big man, who seemed to score at will. Stratford didn't let up, with Sandor Kato hitting two three pointers and Sam Soudjani hitting one. Defensively, Stratford stayed in their zone defense, and saw fine rebounding from Tyler Bartlett and Calvin Blair, and some nice shot blocking from Colin Brown. At halftime, it was Stratford 25, Mac 23.
Then, the second half began, and Mac did some adjusting, using their quickness and speed to game a large number of steals, staying in the full court press, and wearing down our team very quickly. They started hitting their 3 pointers, our shooting went cold, and they continued to build up a lead throughout the second half. They continued to press until the final buzzer, where Mac walked off with a 60 - 35 victory. For the Spartans, Sandor led the team with 13 points, Colin with 6, and John White with 5.
Dec 12 Report:
The Freshman B team stands at 1-3 after the first four games of the season.
Opening with Klein, the boys had a hard time finding the basket, and Klein proved to be very quick both on offense and defense. Klein raced to an 11 - 1 lead in the first period, and then our defense stiffened in the second and third periods, staying even with them those two quarters prior to Klein pulling away for a final score of Klein 36, Spartans 11. Scoring for the Spartans was Colin Brown, Sandor Kato, and Brandon Andrade.
The second game saw our boys traveling to Pasadena , and taking away a win on the road, 32 - 29. This time we raced to a large first quarter lead, but Pasadena battled back over the remainder of the game to tie the game with 36 seconds left. Colin Brown then hits a free throw to put us up by one, and then Sam Soudjani hits a bucket at the end of the game to seal the win. Zachary Smith played a whale of a game at both ends of the floor, leading the Spartans in points and rebounds for the game. Calvin Blair helped with the scoring and Sandor Kato with the rebounding. A good win for the team!
In our first home game, we faced a very strong Cy Fair team, who walked away with a 40-22 win. Once again, we had trouble with the ball finding the basket, although the boys kept trying, the ball just wouldn't go in. Leading by just five after the first period, Cy Fair dominated in the second half with a very strong offensive game. Sandor Kato had another fine game, (3 three pointers), while Zac Smith added in with scoring and rebounding.
On Tuesday, we traveled to Katy to face the Tigers. The Tigers were very strong offensively with a well balanced motion offense, with excellent ball movement from all five on the floor. The Spartans countered as best they could with a hustling defense, refusing to give up throughout the game. Once again, we took a lot of shots, but............final score: Katy 35, Stratford 18. Sandor Kato and Colin Brown both had fine rebounding efforts (each getting 7 boards) and our scoring was well balanced with six players getting points.
