“Mary Stuart” – a riveting political thriller about the Scottish Queen’s challenge to Queen Elizabeth I

By Lucy Komisar

Janet McTeer and company, photo Neil Libbert

The fusion of women in 16th century clothes and men in suits in this stunning political thriller underlines the eternal reality of struggles for power. Director Phyllida Lloyd has used the device to enrich her staging of Friedrich Schiller’s play, which premièred in Weimar, Germany, in 1800. It has been adapted by Peter Oswald for a memorable production.

The Comedy Theatre Company presents Victoria Wood’s –dinnerladies, Richmond Theatre on 13th July 2009.

Who can resist a good love story?  There is a fine line between comedy and tragedy. What may appear, at first sight, a tragedy, may be taken as comedy by other characters and by us , the audience.  Bren and Tony’s story in dinnerladies is made up of all of these elements.

FRINGE FIRST: MERMAN ON BROADWAY

Dominic Mattos delivers stunning tribute to Ethel Merman

A fine tribute to the show-business legend, Ethel Merman, is due to feature at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2009 in the show Merman on Broadway… performed by none other than a man.

Oxford Theology graduate Dominic Mattos, a publisher of religious books by day, dons his kaftan and stilettos, borrows his girlfriend's eyeliner, and continues the recently resurrected Merman's 100th Birthday Tour fresh from sell-out shows in London, where additional dates had to be scheduled due to demand.

‘The wildly talented Dominic Mattos… pays mind-blowing tribute’

- TIME OUT LONDON (CRITICS’ CHOICE)

Merman on Broadway is performing daily at 21.50 at C-Venues, Chambers Street, Edinburgh, from Sunday 23 August to Monday 31 August.

The Wild Goose Chase

By John Fletcher

Directed by David Brown

Lighting Design by Nigel Lewis

Last performing at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe six-years ago the acclaimed ensemble, Ealing Shakespeare Players return to stage a rarely performed Jacobean play that both anticipated and influenced the Restoration Comedy of the 17th century.

Virtually unperformed for over 300-years THE WILD GOOSE CHASE by John Fletcher is to make its debut Edinburgh Festival Fringe appearance this August with a limited run at The Quaker Meeting House between 17 and 29 August 09 (excludes 23 August).

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The Regina Monologues

Written and Performed by Robert Inston

Robert Inston’s Reduced Tudor Company is to make its debut at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with a brand-new, one-man comedy show, THE REGINA MONOLOGUES which is set to perform for a limited run between 16 and 31 August at Spotlites @ The Merchants’ Hall.

This tale of treachery, charts the Tudor dynasty’s remarkable rise through sole survivor Elizabeth Tudor.  Dare we trust Elizabeth’s bawdy, irreverent spin on the politics of power and did this ‘virgin’ fare better than modern-day leaders and celebrities in protecting herself from disfavour, condemnation and scandal?

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

One Man Show-off

By Dave Florez

Following the acclaimed, sell-out Edinburgh Festival Fringe 08 comedy sketch show, ‘The Art of Dating & Dumping’ at the Assembly Rooms, Dave Florez returns once more with his latest comedy, ONE MAN SHOW-OFF which has been performing to rave reviews and full-houses in London and is now due to make its Edinburgh premiere, performing daily from 16:15 at the Gilded Balloon between 5 and 31 August 08.

A Longhardt Look at Love with Chad Longhardt

Written & Performed by Brianne Berkson

Directed by Daniel Kutner

Marking its UK Premiere at this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe is a show unlike any other, a show that challenges the true meaning of love in the style of a spoof ‘Big Brother’-cum-‘I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here’-cum-‘Blind Date’ reality TV competition.

Presented by Steadfast Productions and described by the New York Post as a ‘promising offering’ to the Ed Fest Fringe from its ‘East to Edinburgh’ preview in July, A LONGHARDT LOOK AT LOVE WITH CHAD LONGHARDT is an original comedy creation by emerging talent Brianne Berkson who will be making her debut UK appearance in the show which will perform for a limited run between 21 and 31 August at The Bongo Club.

JERUSALEM by Jez Butterworth, Royal Court Theatre - extended until Aug 22 2009

Published by: Nicola Hollinshead on Friday 24th July 2009 06:07pm

JERUSALEM by Jez Butterworth

A show that runs for 3 hrs & 10 minutes with 2 intervals may seem like a daunting prospect these days to any potential theatre-goer, but a visit to The Royal Court for a viewing of Jez Butterworth's JERUSALEM is an epic that defies time & is simply not to be missed. With a wonderful woodland setting by Ultz & under the superb direction of Ian Rickson, once again working with Butterworth; this is a show that will surely run and transfer.

You Can't Go Swimming with your Ex-Husband
Published by: Amanda McGregor on Friday 24th July 2009 12:07pm

A performance about a chance encounter in a lift, said to change destiny forever by Zoe Alyssa Cooper.

For me seeing a performance, is about seeing a different perspective, exploring life in a different framework or thought. My inspiration from this performance, to take home to my personal life was, ‘ we need to be able to communicate’ to have a life together and one has to be careful not to get in the firing line if you are involved with a couple that is dysfunctional in communication but ‘going swimming with an ex can be pleasant, as long as you trust yourself and each other’!

24:7 Theatre Festival, Manchester - Tuesday

Freshers - New Century 1
Blinded by the Light - Pure/Funktion

Dancing to the Sound of Crunch of Snails - Pure/Funktion

This evening kicked off at New Century 1 with Freshers by Steve Pearce, author of 2007’s popular Rose Cottage.  The premise promises comedy mayhem: Scarlett arrives in halls on her first day at university, only to find that her dad Miles has also enrolled as a student and is living on the floor below - with hilarious consequences! (I assumed).  In fact my expectations were thoroughly subverted because the encounters between dad and daughter are dark and emotionally charged due to heavy family stuff from a few years before.  The funny, sexy, studenty bits are flashbacks to the same room 20 years earlier, when earnest ecologist Hephzibah unwittingly bursts in on the sleeping Miles.

THE WRONG SLEEP COCK TAVERN THEATRE
Published by: OLIVER VALENTINE on Monday 20th July 2009 04:07pm

THE WRONG SLEEP                 COCK TAVERN THEATRE

The Cock Tavern Theatre, Kilburn, under the artistic direction of Adam Speadbury –Maher continues with The Wrong Sleep, to offer some of London’s finest and most innovative fringe work.

Ruthsdale, a desolate town is rocked by an explosion that leaves many dead and injured. A priest offers the community God as comfort, despite beginning to doubt his own faith, and a deeply disturbed Muslim woman suffering from extreme insomnia, comes to him seeking answers. She is torn between Islam, Christianity and secularism, and as it becomes increasingly clear that she is willing to use violence to vent her frustrations, she also uses the place to confess.

We’re only into the second half of July and Manchester is already holding its third major theatrical event of the month.  But forget the Manchester International Festival and Not Part Of, because the 24:7 Theatre Festival is by comparison the great-granddaddy of the city’s new writing festivals, 2009 being its sixth consecutive year.

West Side Story
Published by: Louise Winter on Monday 20th July 2009 09:00am

West Side Story reviewed Tuesday 14th July 2009

As soon as the first bars of the music are heard we are transported to New York’s Upper West Side. This musical, based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, explores the rivalry between two teenage gangs; one white, the other Puerto Rican. It is chillingly apt, dealing as it does with the social issues of gang culture and racism. Tony, a reformed member of the Jets falls in love with Maria, the sister of Bernardo, the leader of the rival gang the Sharks. The feud between the gangs escalates and violence and hatred eventually overshadow love and devotion. There is no happy ending here.

Originally created in the 50’s by the combined genius of Leonard Bernstein’s musical score, Stephen Sondheim’s magnificent storytelling lyrics, and Jerome Robbins’s groundbreaking choreography this musical is regarded as the pinnacle of its genre.

"The Norman Conquests" is a wry sophisticated comedy, in the inimitable Ayckbourn style. By Lucy Komisar....

Published by: Lucy Komisar on Saturday 18th July 2009 12:07pm....

  ....

.. ..

Alan Ayckbourn's "The Norman Conquests" is an ultra-sophisticated comedy that verges perilously close to sitcom, then skirts around it. The round-robin of three plays is what the clever British author posits against the normal sequential serial, a "Rashomon" style retake of the same events from the viewpoint of different locations rather than different people. The Old Vic Theatre Company gives the tri-part event an engaging revival, returning it to Broadway after 35 years. It is not the slightest bit dated.....

Last year’s original version of Turkish Delight – The Opera had an anti-climatic ending, in contrast to what was a strong first half.   The writers were advised to balance the plot out.  They have quite clearly taken this suggestion on board but the level of intensity is still hard to sustain. This is partly due to its very few quiet, reflective moments.  It is like a thriller made up solely of car chases, comedy with jokes every few seconds or a sexual film containing no foreplay.  In short, there is too much light and not enough shade, making the piece hard to recognise as a whole. However the  individual songs are made up of some great harmonies.  There is a plot, we just can’t see it ,partly because of the way it’s staged but also because the audience needs to be exposed to the quiet, reflective parts to make sense of the high-octane action that has just taken place.....

The Week That Was....

.. ..

Whew. Finally got over my flu. The tiniest of coughs seems to have left the building and my temple has returned to working order. To get my spirits back up after that, it was off to the cinema to see a funny film. The Hangover did it. It's such a simple film, some guys go on a stag party to Las Vegas and get up to mischief. However, the way the story unfolds, complimented nicely with some great characterisations by the actors, and it turned out into one of the funniest films this year. And it's a major success around the world already. For a budget of $35 million it has already grossed a whopping $272,391,312 worldwide. There's no business like show business.....

.. ..

Michael Jackson usurped me for a second time on Sky News. On 7th July when his service was televised, the show was postponed yet again, so it's next Thursday16th now. Unless there's another major news event which takes over on that day. The new UK Radio Blog is also going strong, and I've been chatting to other radio stations in Glasgow, London, and in USA to start to stream it around the globe.....

Here I'll Stay: Kurt Weill in America....

Published by: Sara-Mae Tuson on Friday 10th July 2009 11:07am....

.. ..

This unusual and riveting piece of theatre, written and directed by Peter Scott-Presland is a labour of love. As such the plot (such as it is) elaborates on composer Kurt Weill's time in America, with many enjoyable excursions into the musical world(s) he created whilst there.....

.. ..

The acting is consistently impressive, with a cast who share in common sensitivity of expression and lungs of iron. Despite having few characters per se (other than Kurt himself played by Gary Hughes) they manage the difficult task of engaging the audience in the emotional landscapes created by the music, and in some ways each song is a miniature play in itself. ....

Stating the bare bones of the plot of the Winslow Boy it might appear rather dry. Based on a true incident, a thirteen year old naval cadet, Ronnie Winslow, is expelled from college for stealing a five-shilling postal order. His father, Arthur Winslow, convinced of his innocence, engages the services of the distinguished lawyer Sir Robert Morton, and enters into a protracted and costly case that ulitmately affects everyone connected with it.....

“Waiting for Godot” – Beckett on the uselessness of expecting God to save us from misery....

By Lucy Komisar....

For me the mystery of Samuel Beckett’s play about two down-at-the-heels hobos who watch an overbearing “master” abuse a pathetic slave is the division of the audience into those who laugh and those who don’t.....

I noticed this years ago when I first saw the play Off Broadway. There it was again at the current Roundabout Theatre production. When I commented about it to my seatmate at intermission, a lady in the row in front of us (in her 60s) turned around and nodded emphatically.....

Set in the sleepy village of Merton-cum-Middlewick, it seems that the vicar’s wife has come up trumps on the football pools with a sizeable win. The only trouble is her pious husband doesn’t know she’s been having a weekly flutter and staunchly disapproves of gambling. Already frowned upon by some of the more sanctimonious parishioners, particularly Miss Skillon, because of her background as an actress, poor Penelope Toop finds herself in a bit of a quandary.....

I'm now working with BAFTA on their online activity and the first thing they are keen to let everyone know all about, is their new ACCESS ALL AREAS. It's a new public area of their website and it's not just for professional filmmakers and performers, it's for EVERYONE.

Join today and start to get more inside news throughout the year. All their fantastics events are held throughout the UK and are open to the public.

Read more below and feel free to SHARE on your blog/notes/profile.

Access All Areas

BAFTA is the UK’s foremost charity working with the leading lights in film, TV and videogames. Access All Areas is our way of making their expertise available to everyone.

We work with learners of all ages – from young children who want to find out more about how their TV show, film or game is made; to students wanting to know about working in the industry; to industry professionals who want to learn from the successes of their peers.

What is learning for BAFTA?

All of BAFTA’s events are part of our learning strategy.

Our events help to develop an accomplished, vibrant and diverse workforce for the UK’s film, TV and video games industries by sharing expertise and developing relationships within the industries.

BAFTA is lucky enough to count some of the most successful and talented practitioners as our members and friends. Our events allow them to share the secrets of their success with their peers, the public and with those who are pursuing careers in the industry.

Examples of BAFTA’s sharing expertise

• A BAFTA Interview – Julie Walters – The acclaimed TV and film actress spoke to an audience of BAFTA members and the public about her career experiences, sharing stories of how she got into the industry, how she approaches her work and her relationship with directors.
• Short Sighted – BAFTA’s event for short film-makers, demonstrating how they should plan for exhibition and distribution. A day long event including case studies from recent successful short film-makers
• Games Speed Surgeries – over 2 days BAFTA members working in the games industry took part in 15 minute surgeries for young people wanting to get into the industry.
• BAFTA Families Storyboarding Workshop – an interactive workshop at Leeds Young People’s Film Festival with storyboard artist Temple Clark. Temple showed the audience what his job entails and explained the role of a storyboard artist in the production process.
• BAFTA Schools Sessions at National Schools Film Week – BAFTA-winner Stephen Frears spoke to an audience of school children about his work before a screening of Dirty Pretty Things.

What we do

BAFTA is not a training provider but offers expertise-sharing as a complement to training and other forms of learning.

BAFTA’s focus is on production skills – we help the public to deepen their understanding of the production process and also help the industry to define best practice.

Our events encourage creativity, but focus is on professional skills, encouraging people to make the business choices which will help them turn their creativity into a successful career.

Learning takes place across regional partner venues, at 195 Piccadilly, and online. Online environments will become increasingly important in the 21st century so BAFTA will continue to develop on-line resources from our events.

Dreamboats and Petticoats, (King’s Theatre, Glasgow, 2-7 March 2009)

Review by Cameron Lowe

The nostalgic, retrospective musical show tour has become commonplace in our theatres … but their popularity does not guarantee that they are any good. A cynical producer would insist that building a show around 43 classic chart hits from the 50s and early 60s would deliver a smash hit musical. But the audiences who were first attracted to the theatre to see “Buddy” have been suckered by a few badly produced, but similarly themed, shows since and are growing more sophisticated. The bar has been raised.

Macbeth

Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester

Review by Caroline May

The evening begins innocently enough as three little girls watch TV in their bedroom. The party’s about to break up – “When shall we three meet again?” – when a gang of soldiers bursts in and rapes them.

Seven Brides For Seven Brothers

UK National Tour

Review by Steve Burbridge

I last reviewed Seven Brides For Seven Brothers back in September and was less than impressed. However, credit where credit is due, last night’s performance at Darlington Civic Theatre had a new energy and vigour that just about leapt from the stage and into the auditorium.

Morning

Hope you are well. My wrist is slowly recovering, enough to type a quick newsletter. My sound and editing team managed to finish the tiny changes to MAKING IT IN HOLLYWOOD to start getting it out to festivals, broadcasters and studios. It was quite strange watching it during Oscars week, when exactly two years ago when filming started, I had wished Kate Winslet “Good luck for tonight” as she walked towards the red carpet.

This week I went to see Scott Christie in Jekyll and Hyde at the Union Theatre at Southwark. Tonight’s the last night so be quick to get along and see a great production of this classic. The direction, writing, lighting and performance were all first class and it was nice to see a fringe production with such high production values. It's a great setting under the arches of the South Bank of London and it's enhanced with smoke machines and clever lighting to scare the living daylights out of their audience. Boo !

I received a copy of The Ouija Board, a horror film I had a small part in a few years ago. It's finally seen the light of day and heading to horror festivals. Then I got asked to be in a Zombie movie playing a Glaswegian that you can't understand. No acting involved clearly.

The Big Picture project also made a big step this week. We’ve selected 4 scripts to take forward to potential investors next month. There’s a lot of talented writers out there but we feel we’ve selected some great stories which you’ll hear more about over the coming 18 months of production.

It's all happening. Hope it is where you are too....

Enjoy your week, and don’t forget to listen to http://www.nevisradio.co.uk @ 12-2pm on Saturday’s where you’ll hear some of my favourites from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s.

Puccini's Tosca at The Richmond Theatre

Korn/Ferry Opera Holland Park’s Tosca feels like an original production –an amazing feat considering how well known this classic piece is. So good is this production that even minor characters are compelling, delivering brushstroke after brushstroke to the final masterpiece.
