Renegades on the Road
from The Wall Street Journal
By BARRY MAZOR

The four highly individual and geographically scattered acoustic and electric roots-music acts headlining this month’s “Big Surprise Tour” were getting ready to meet up in New England to get the show rolling as we spoke. Ketch Secor of the Old Crow Medicine Show, the very popular new-era old-timey band that instigated the traveling review, talked by phone about what the performers have in common:

“There are a lot of renegade old-time music bands out there, but we feel a kindred feeling with this entourage; it definitely feels like this is our musical family. And if there is a ‘scene’ around the music we play, these artists make up the better part of it. We are all linked by a passion for music that can be explained by those first few seconds of Bob Dylan’s ‘Like a Rolling Stone,’ by Chuck Berry, by the Grateful Dead, but also by any song by Skip James or Charlie Poole. It’s a feel for the urgency of rock ’n’ roll, the way it instantly transports you—but also an appreciation, very much as students, really, for the deep, dark body of American roots music of the earlier part of the 20th century.”

The Big Surprise Tour Takes the Stage... July 30, 2009 6:00 AM
from the Seacoastonline.com

Musicians talk about doing things all the time, but it's usually hard to make it happen," said Justin Townes Earle in a recent phone conversation about the upcoming "Big Surprise Tour," happening at the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom on Aug. 4.

"You think, 'that would be great,' you voice, 'yeah, right...;' and then you move on to the next thing. But this time, it worked out. I got a phone call from my management and told 'em, 'I'll be there.'"

All of the acts on "the Big Surprise tour" — Headliners Old Crow Medicine Show, Dave Rawlings Machine (featuring Gillian Welch), Earle, and the Felice Brothers are connected in some mutual way and are reveling in the fact that they'll be able to take the stage together in somewhat of an impromptu performance of artists and friends, where collaboration and the celebration of roots music will be the name of the game. Said artists will play a smattering of their own original material, as well as covers of each other's tunes, and beyond.
