Powers to rock!!! Ahoy there maties! Here's what's on the lookout for this month.

Contents: 1. Great shows this month, plus get tix for SD and LA shows next month now! * Alert!! --- Calypso Cafe this Thursday!!! Tons of fun, with a very special guest joining the Tiernan Trio! 2. Get on my Street Team!! It's simple, its fun! I'll put you to work with goofy tasks, like voting for me on stuff! 3. Bragging and Swagger section: I am a Great American: Song Contest Finalist, that is....Yeeehaw! The Great American Song Contest awards "Better Life" 4. Thought of the month: Facebook / Twitter / Pitter Patter: Being Uber-Connected in this crazy, fast-paced world. I used to hate it, now I think its pretty cool!
*********** First, check out this video greeting from Elizabeth and Me... click HERE to view....
1. Highlighted Shows: Since the schedule is printed just above in the top now, I'd just like to call your attention to a few very special shows coming up. ***Of course, there's Calypso this Thursday. We're being joined by a very talented singer/songwriter, David Ryan Norgren, who will actually be jamming my tunes w/ me for a part of the set! Check it out! *** Downtown dwellers! KPRI Homegrown Show at Dublin Square on the 27th! Such a great time! *** Belly Up show just added!! Not my NAG show, but a great local showcase. Mark you calendars for May 6th and tell all your friends! *** L.A. Can Wait: but only another month! Get your tix now for a very special music and cancer benefit at Molly Malones in Los Angeles on May 19th, supporting "I'm ToO Young For This!", an outreach and networking group for young adults with cancer and cancer survivors. Its going to ROCK, and I'm bringing the band! **** Not in SoCal? Don't forget my live Internet Broadcasts "High Noon with TiernanTunes" every Friday at noon Pacific at http://www.reverbnation.com/controller/fan_reach/pt?eid=_&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.tiernantunes.tv. ************** 2. TiernanTunes TaskForce and Street Team - Join and help in lil' tasks from time to time...
OK - sometimes I need a little help here and there with goofy little voting things online, or posters and fliers handed out to friends, etc, but I have a hard time buggin my whole list about it! So please, if you'd like to lend a hand from time to time, please make sure you're signed up via my ReverbNation site (which is where this email is coming from!) to be part of my Street Team - click the update your information link on the bottom of this email to sign up! There's some fun stuff coming through the pipeline and you'll discover some great new sites and people. Here's a little taste of what I'd ask you to do, and anybody can do this: ***Go to www.webceleb.com and sign up (it's a great new, cutting edge social networking tool to discover music, art, and writing, started by people here in SD). Find my music by going to http://www.webceleb.com/#/profile/4251/ and vote me up - click the "up" tabs by my songs when you play them. There's a contest for the next couple weeks for the most voted upon artists to perform at San Diego State University for a big show. Silly, yes! But also fun, if you like surfing the net and discovering new stuff! Thanks! Or, create your own TaskForce Tasks! Self-inspired Task Force example: Some people ask me what they can do to help the music spread, and I'll let you know via the Task Force when specific things come up. Others take matters into their own hands. Like my friend Laura Lee (www.somaticexperience.com ) - she liked the song "L.A. Can Wait" so much, that she sent a letter to the Ellen show requesting that I get on there. Who knows if it'll work, but that's pretty rad!!! Thanks Laura Lee! Anyone else who wants to write to the Ellen Show, be my guest!! My friend Kathy, in Denver, took it upon herself to call the Craig Furgusen show to try to get me on there! Sweeeet! *************
3. "Better Life" wins Honor Award at the Great American Song Contest!
I guess its sort of like being proud of your children once they make the Honor Roll, get into a great college, or do something really praiseworthy. I wrote this song a few years back now. Just writing it was thrill enough for me - it was one of those that took me by surprise and took me on a journey. I recorded it w/ Sven, Barbara Nesbitt added some seriously killer vocals, Alex DePue nailed some insane violin parts, and away it went - on the CD, played during live shows, etc. Its fantastic when a song takes on its own life - you get it out there and let it do its own work! So far, this song has been featured TWICE on MTV's Real World, and just recently was a finalist in the Great American Song Contest in the Contemporary Acoustic / Folk Category. Sweet! Now I just need a bumper sticker. ************* 4. Twitter / Facebook musings: Just a waste of time? Or Universal Mind? I often hear people, young and old, complain - "What's with all this social networking mumbo-jumbo? Why waste your time?" And true, to get caught up in spending too much time reading up on people's Twitters and updates that read something like, "Sam Johnson is eating a scrumptious Peanut Butter sandwich" seems quite ridiculous. And I used to agree. In fact, some time ago, I held out on getting a cell phone for months and months b/c I didn't want the intrusion of my own space. I've always been an advocate for creating space in our lives.
But is there really something to this whole Facebook and Twitter phenomenon? Isn't it amazing that at a glance we can know what's going on in the lives of others, especially those we care about? Yes, a healthy dose of self-control is needed not to waste hours living vicariously through the lives of others. But even if we don't care what Sam is eating for lunch, isn't it cool that Sam came across our awareness today - that we thought of him, wished him well, cracked a smile at his good fortune that he is so ecstatic about a simple meal? Isn't that better than not thinking of him at all?
I think its absolutely cool and amazing that we can share our up-to-the-second thoughts, whereabouts, emotional states, pleas for prayers, or thoughts of gratitude, instantly with those we're connected to. Of course it doesn't substitute for real human contact, but it puts us in a realm of togetherness that can help us get through our days that we usually spend alone at work - we sympathize, criticize, rejoice, chat, send good thoughts out to others instantly. We can communicate so incredibly fast on in depth thoughts and issues. I guess the collective subconscious of humanity was feeling the alienation that technology seemed to impose and responded with a way to inject some humanity into the hours we're glued to the screen. This modern world sometimes seeks to destroy community by putting up ideological walls and prejudices - but this social networking thing, done right, is great therapy.
Through Facebook, whole parts of my history that I've turned off unintentionally have come rushing back into my life - and instead of being an intrusion, it helps connect the dots of where I came from, and who I am now. Re-connecting with everyone from pre-school friends to post-college workmates has brought a delightful richness to my life. Its so great to share where I am now with them and see what they have made of themselves as well. It gives me a sense that we really are being taken care of - that things DO work out, that people realize their dreams, and that the world is a good place.
O, and I am very happy about Sam's PB&J.
With that in mind, if you haven't yet, connect with me and each other around the music at places like:

Happy New Year!!! I have a new song for you to hear / see - click here to listen/view. It is my New Year's wish to you! I just recorded it.Yesterday, Tracy, Elizabeth and I were driving down to the 101 from Del Mar Heights Road when we saw the most amazing wall of fog rolling in from the south. We stopped, marvelled, took a picture, then raced north along the edge of the fog bank just to catch it pass by us at the 9th street lookout. Absolutely amazing. I've never seen this dramatic of an oceanic effect ever, living here for 9 years now, and I look the ocean every day. This picture is an appropriate metophor for this new year. The past is a fog, beautiful in its own way, but gone - covered in misty history. We race along the edge of the present, which is the most beautiful and exciting place to be, where you get whisps of the past and hints of the future. The future is wide open, bright, and full of color, its direction not yet determined. I'm going to jump into this 2009 with the pizazz of this photo. Join me! Contents: 1. Locals of SoCal: BIG SHOW at the BELLY UP this Wednesday, January 7th. Please join me!!
2. Locals of the Earth: Lunchtime Internet Concerts take off - Read this article in the San Diego Reader! Please comment on it and send it to your friends / facebook. And join me every Friday at Noon Pacific on your computer!
3. Michael on national TV January 21st. Tune in!
4. Tiernan in Mammoth this Winter 5. New Album in '09. Coming soon.... 6. Lil' bit of House Keeping....

I'd appreciate your support if you're free. Our musical menu for the evening includes: Veronica May and the To Do List, The Michael Tiernan Trio, Kyle Phelan, and Owen Roberts and the Doghouse Brewer. *********************************************************************************** 2. San Diego Reader reports on my High Noon with TiernanTunes Lunchtime Internet Concerts - Read it here!! As many of you know, I've been broadcasting Live on the Internet every Friday at Noon (my time, Pacific) for a little show called High Noon with Tiernan Tunes. Can you do me a favor - click on the link, read up, and if you have a few minutes, please post some comments under the story - if you've seen the show or not, you can comment on the music or whatever. You can also email your friends the story from the Reader page and also add it to your Facebook. That would really help me out (the more hits and comments it gets, the better!) And please join me this and every Friday at Noon - go to www.tiernantunes.tv, close out the little tour video that comes up, then click on the broadcast tower icon in the upper left menu bar. I'm more than ready to get back into the studio! I'll heading back there very soon to begin recording album #4 - yay! Can Wait - Father and Child - Small Things - Here - No More Oil - Out Walking - Sunrise - Easy - Strong - Here to Sing - Dying Tree - You With Me - Write You a Love Song and maybe this new lil' ditty - "Easy 2" This year, I will also be working on several tailored songs for corporate, commercial, movie/TV use, as well as continuing to build my production company (www.StillListeningProductions.com), which provides music for private and coporate events. Let me know if I can be of service! ******************************************************************************* 6. *********************** 5 L.A. Can Wait - New Baby on the way...
Many of you know this already, as I've been letting the cat out of the bag the past couple months at shows, but it is with great joy that I announce to all of you that my wife Tracy and I will be having a baby - our first - this November! We are SUPER excited, and the experience so far has been life changing in so many positive ways. Many of you keep reassuring me that our life will drastically change even more when lil' Tiernan arrive, but that it's all worth it!
Its crazy, I feel like the part of a new club now. Some of the friends I've had for years now are just starting to share with me how wonderful parenthood is. Before, from those same friends, I might've heard how difficult it is, or how I should wait, if even in sort of a joking manner. But now I'm part of the club, they're coming out of the woodwork with so many reasons of how wonderful it is. I tell you, its great encouragement!
I've always loved kids - I have 8 nieces and nephews who have all at one time or another used me as a jungle gym, punching bag, babysitter, confidant, and favorite rock star uncle, but the prospect of having my own, to tell the truth, always seemed a bit scary.
That's where this new song came from, "L.A. Can Wait". It's about how I always had fears and excuses centered around the perfect "timing", and how I thought I had to have perfect control of my life before moving forward in certain things. That day Tracy told me the news, with 5 pregnancy tests displayed out on the bathroom counter (!!!), despite being filled with worry, apprehension, and fear, the exact opposite occurred - I was filled with peace, joy, absolute appreciation for my wife and for our life, courage, hope, and an overall sense that everything was just as how it should be. That's what the song is about.
And since then, it has only gotten better. We're in month 7, and I can regularly feel the little dude/dudette kick and claw around in there. Tracy is glowing, and I'm electric with excitement. But we're enjoying the process. I'm sure there will be many baby songs to come. And more tender love songs. In the past, I've written about love of life, love for another person, love of God - now I'm going to have a whole new arsenal of insights, beginning with our little miracle waiting in the wings.
And so, this brings me to the next point -
***************************** 6. Tune in this Friday at http://www.tiernantunes.tv/ to hear my new song "L.A. Can Wait", otherwise affectionately known as "The Baby Song". Noon pacific time - deets on how to get in are above under 3...
****************************
7. Stories Behind the Songs. I've recently posted some insights behind the songs on my album page. Click here to read a little bit about what inspired each song on the album "Spaces". And I'd love to hear your feedback or how the songs have affected you! Thanks!

8. San Diego Reader Michael Tiernan Band Page - Download some tunes! The San Diego Reader has been nice enough to feature me in several articles and reviews the past four years. They now have a really great Band Pages for tons of the San Diego bands. Head on over to my page and download 2 free songs, plus read up on all the Reader has had to say about me in the past! With enough downloads, they'll feature me again... so download away!
*******************
9. Falcon Ridge Update.... I recently returned from performing at one of the biggest and coolest (actually, it was steaming hot!) folk / acoustic music festivals in the country, The Falcon Ridge Folk Festival. Picture this camping-challenged California dude trekking up a very muddy grass hill and trying to pitch a tent for only the second time in his life, while well-accustomed-to-nature hippy music lovers observe with great interest... There was great music, much rain, tons of wind and lightning, and I didn't shower for 4 days straight. It was awesome!
I was part of the Emerging Artist showcase, and at the end of the festival, the crowd votes on which new artist they'd like to see at next year's festival. I have no clue if I won (I know there were some shady voting practices and political maneuvering going on...), but I think I impressed the crowd, especially with the new Baby Song! People were coming up to me all weekend saying, "when are you due", or, "Boy, your life's gonna change!". We find out in the Fall the results of the voting. The three top artists go on tour together for two weeks. That'd be great! Check out all the great artists I played with at http://www.falconridgefolk.com/.
****************************** That's if from me! Thanks for keeping up on all the deets, and for all your well-wishes with the baby. Feel free to drop me a line and say hi!
Have a wonderful August -

****************************** 5. On a personal note: Celebrating, Mourning, and Remembering Our Friend Craig Yerkes
(Craig Yerkes, pictured below, on stage at the Belly Up during my "Jumping In" CD Release)
It was almost five years ago when I walked into Axis Bar in Del Mar. I had heard they were starting to do some music there, and I went in looking to book a gig. I was timid and new at knowing just how to do that. My wife Tracy came with me for moral support. I asked for the manager, and sat there on the big leather seats, looking around uncomfortably as we waited. The place was pretty empty, except for another young couple just a few feet down from us. Our eyes met, and the couple motioned over to us - "Hi, I'm Craig. This is Elise. We overheard you're a musician. Us too! We're here to book a show too - how wild! What do you play?"
That was the moment Craig Yerkes walked into our lives, one of the most genuine, honest, and loving persons I have ever known, and a collaborator and confidant with whom I was blessed to share some precious moments over the years. To our shock, and to the shock of his wife Elise, his two kids, his family, his friends, and all of us in the music community, Craig died Saturday in a car crash. My eyes can barely believe I'm reading this as this as I write it, and my heart sinks with this tragic loss. It does not seem real yet. Although, it is all too real.
That very night, Craig and Elise invited me to go with them to a musician's open mic down at the Coaster Saloon in Ocean Beach, where they took me under their wing, and proceeded to introduce me to all of their music friends. The Coaster that night was like the beating heart of the San Diego acoustic scene, and some of the people there were to become my core friends and helpers in helping me put together a music career. That was the night I met my beloved friend and producer, Sven-Erik Seaholm. I met Cathryn Beeks. Steph Johnson. And Chuck Schiele, who would later form a band with Craig and Elise, The Grams, winning two San Diego Music Awards.
The friendship that Craig and I forged that night was elemental in my career, and equally important on a personal level. Craig helped get me going in the San Diego scene. He encouraged me in my music. He inspired me with his guitar playing. But most of all, he was someone I looked forward to spending time with as a friend, and those times we would meet apart from music events, away from our normal digs, were golden.
I had a long-overdue and intensely philosophical lunch with Craig just a couple months ago. Whenever we got together, we always cut the small talk and would go straight to what's really going on in our lives. It's a beautiful thing to have a friendship like that. Craig and I shared similar backgrounds spiritually and philosophically, and we found it easy and intriguing relating to one another.
Craig and his wife Elise graced my second album "Jumping In" with their musical presence. That's Craig busting out those amazing acoustic guitar licks all throughout the song, "Swim". Elise played those violin parts on "Song I Can't Remember", and Craig embellished the theme with classical guitar on "Jumping In". They would often jump up with me on stage at different gigs.
I believe strongly in the Communion of Saints - though maybe not in the traditional way. I believe we're all connected, and that death is not the end, but a transition. So if I may just say this directly to him - Craig, you are a real, practical, salt of the earth, down in the dirt SAINT. All the good that people have been saying about you these past few days is absolutely true. I believe that since we're all in this communion - which we happen to access through music and friendship - you will never leave us. You now have a different perspective than we do right now - you know that there's a meaning in all this muck. And you see all of us who love you. But we miss you sorely and this will take a while to sink in. Thank you, Craig, for blessing my life with your friendship, your smile, your trust, and for being a confidant and a light along this sometimes sorrowful path.
Donations: Some of my musician friends in town are taking donations to give to the family. Barbara Nesbitt is one such person. I'd like to join her efforts to help the family with funeral arrangements. If you've been moved by Craig's story, I encourage you to listen to his music - either on my CD "Jumping In", or on his band website http://www.thegrams.net/, and if you feel moved, please make a check out to his wife, Elise Ohki, and send it to: 1439 Luneta Drive, Del Mar, CA 92014. I will make a donation from my listeners and me to the family. Thank you.
I'll close this little reflection with the encouraging words of my friend Peter Bolland, regarding Craig: "We will live a little deeper for knowing you, we will honor you by honoring what is authentically true in us, we will relinquish fear and move courageously in the direction of our dreams, we will stop waiting for our lives to begin. We will love and live on purpose. Thank you for your light."

3. May Meanderings: Music, Healing, and You - bringing music to your loved ones in need
In last month's update, I wrote about my standing offer to be commissioned to write you, or a loved one, a song. That idea struck me after my wife had commissioned a good friend of ours to do a painting for our 5 year wedding anniversary. The painting is a one of a kind of one of my favorite place on earth - the view of the coast from 15th Street in Del Mar. A song can be just like a painting - capturing a feeling, a view, a wish, a story, in a way that goes beyond the form itself. If you missed it, let me know, I'll forward it to you again.
This month, I'm extending another offer for something completely different - to bring music to those who are sick, suffering, undergoing treatment, in the hospital, or are simply laid up somewhere, trying to heal. If you know someone who needs cheer, or who just needs to get their minds off their situation, or get their hope going in the right direction, maybe some music would help. My proposal: to extend a musical visit to your friend or loved one, a little private concert at the hospital, nursing home, hospice, or home - let me know the situation, and let's work something out.
The rationale behind it: Music, for me, isn't just about playing gigs in clubs, pubs, café's, and the like. I really love playing those venues, but it's about also getting it into the ears and hearts of people wherever they find themselves: in their own living rooms, churches (of all kinds), art studios, cancer benefits, classrooms, wherever! Music has taken me to the wildest places. One of the most profound experiences I've ever had playing music happened in hospice in Texas - I was playing very mellow in a tucked-away corner. Family members of the sick and dying were milling slowly and meditatively in and out of their loved ones' rooms, being present to them as they made their way out of this life and onto the next. The music made its way down the corridors and into the individual rooms - it was a sacred place, during a very sacred time in these individuals' lives. Some came out to listen quietly, tears in their eyes, but peace on their faces.
I've come to experience music as being a very healing force - perhaps just because it allows us to relax for just long enough to let some peace in. Maybe it is because music attests to something good, hopeful, and true about our own lives and our destiny. Personally, I usually find myself writing a song when I'm in need of reminding myself of some truth, or in the process of discovering one. I think music was instrumental in my own healing over 19 years ago, when I was dealing with my own cancer diagnosis. And I hear countless stories of how music has helped others through their own times of brokenness and challenges.
For many unseen reasons that constantly keep me in awe about how wild an adventure life is, this musical path of mine has led to a lot of collaboration with different cancer groups and foundations. I usually end up playing for a big group of people at an event. However, for the past year or so, I've had a desire to bring the music to people who maybe can't get to an event, or are suffering their crisis' currently. I went to a couple hospitals locally and tried to offer music services in different wards of the hospital. I went through an interview process and orientation for Scripps Memorial Hospital and then found out I could only play in the lobby entrance. There are professional Music Therapists who have studied for years to provide their very valuable services, and there are a couple great groups doing just that in and around San Diego (Resounding Joy Inc, for example). But for many reasons, there are big hoops to jump through for a dude like me to be able to do bring live music right into people's rooms. Unless of course, I'm just an invited visitor - which is where you come in!
So there's my latest offer, in the expanding 'suite' of musical services I can provide. Definitely, come see me at a club this month, but don't forget, there are many other places we can bring the music, and this latest one requires some working together to get a good deed done and to bring some joy into others' lives. Please contact me for details (Michael@tiernantunes.com) if you would like to discuss a particular situation you think might work.
Also, your feedback is always important to me - let me know what you think about this. Thanks!

Hi friends!
Wow - thanks so much for a wonderful night at the Belly Up this week to help celebrate my B-day, the birth of some new songs, and an all-around great time! Here's a picture of one of the coolest parts of the night, when Sim and Sam presented me with a new guitar - look at this flashy gem! I'll have to wear my "My Little Pony" boots when I bust this out at a show (if I can get it stay in tune!)
..Anyhow, really quickly, we added some last minute shows for tonight and Wednesday at a brand new venue in Encinitas and also our good ol' Calypso Cafe. If you couldn't get out this past week, or if you just can't get enough of the Tiernan Trio, drop by for more good times.
