Cabinessence
Comes Back To You"Glam Parsons"? This Eugene, Ore., quintet's self-descriptive pun is tempting. But the spun-sugar vocals and shuffling drums of "Gypsy Rose" are pure Elliott Smith, the California canyon rock of "Down By The Riverside" sports a leftover melody from the Thrills, and "I Know" is Exile-era Stones by way of Supergrass. But don't get the idea that Comes Back To You is an album of categorizable pop songs; Cabinessence is less of a jukebox and more of an Americana mood machine. Led by singer/songwriters Nathan Maricle and Jacob Arnold, the group is at its most interesting when stretching out and mixing its movie-score muses. Is "Instrumental No. 1" more of a Disney film/Pet Sounds pastiche with its sleigh bells and French horn? Or is its lonely harmonica and banjo a Henry Mancini moment? Either way, this is going to be a beautiful ride.
