the Good Time Party Band Gigography Part 2

If you are really harcore, you will close this blog right now and start reading Part 1 so you can start from the very beginning. If you've already read Part 1 then ignore the last sentence, you would just end up in a vicious cycle of reading Part 1 over and over.

It's taken a while to write all this so for the love of god leave a comment or SOMETHING. PLEASE JUST PROVE TO ME THAT SOMEBODY READS THESE THINGS.

19/10/08 Main Street Festival in Mornington with Red Ink
This show was incredibly weird but actually pretty fun. It was around 2pm on a stage set up in the middle of Main Street in Mornington, with hundreds of middle aged people and families standing around or sitting on deck chairs in front of the stage. Not only was it the middle of the day but many people weren’t actually drunk and we had to tone down the swearing, so it was definitely a personal growth kind of experience.

It was our first show with Mark on bass and he was really good. I forgot to grab water and had to keep doing sneaky spits down the side of the stage, which is fine in dank bars but felt weird in front of 5 year olds.
After the show there was a rush toward Dan from a large group of middle aged men wanting him to sign CD’s, which was extremely funny.

We got the idea to make CD's a few nights before whilst drunk, and Stevie 'long schlong' Esteban got up the next morning before work, after about 4 hours sleep, to design the covers for us. As they say in Rome: 'what a man what a man what a man what a mighty mighty good man'. They knew a thing or two, the Romans, old 'long schlong' IS a mighty mighty good man.

28/08/08 Ding Dong with the Mad Feeling and Cry Mercy
Ding Dong is great and we had a rock star night there. Dan broke the roof really early in the set, I don’t know what he did (neither does he) but a huge chunk of the roof just fell down in front of him and smashed on the floor. It was awesome.

Steve Huf played this show with us and it was like a big old family dinner. Only problem was, because Steve Huf was playing bass for us he was too busy to do sound. So when the sound guy was told by the venue: “the night is going way over time, can you ask the Good Time Party Band to cut their last song from the set?” he forgot to tell us. So after we started playing our last song the bar girl cut the power, thinking we’d chosen to ignore her request, and we had to pack up in the dark. It was the first and most likely not the last time we’ve had the power cut on us.

Steve from the Mad Feeling is up there with the top 10 nicest guys of all time.

31/07/08 Pogo with Alpha Remedy and a Mapmouth Exploder
This one went a lot better than our last Pogo show. The girls were actually nice and gave us mountains of water bottles. A Mapmouth Exploder are one of the most extreme bands I have seen in a while. It’s just two guys that play about six different instruments each at the same time and dance like Octopuses (Octopie?) having orgasms, it’s pretty cool. It’s always good to play with Alpha Remedy as we like them.

25/06/08 Roxanne with Dynamo, the Swindlers and the Z-Rays
This was a fun night. Roxanne is a really cool venue and they have smoke machines. We played without having rehearsed since Venus Bay and it was pretty liberating. I didn’t realise but Dynamo pull a mega crowd, and the whole night went well apart from the barman stooging us with the rider. Every time I asked about it (as my last $4 was in my guitar case) the barman kept making up excuses, doing shifty eyes from side to side and sidling away.

21/06/08 The Tarwin Lower Pub playing for the Tarwin Bulldogs
We went down to Aaron’s parents house in Venus Bay with Steve Huf to record some tracks and pretty much went straight to the pub. It was a bit weird, I was wearing tight jeans and all four people in the bar stopped talking and looked at me as I walked in just like the movies. I don’t think they liked our city-folk type.

Anyway as we sat with our incredible parmas and $2 pots, we got wind that the Tarwin Bulldogs (Dolphins? Sharks?) had a big party organised there the next night and I talked the bar woman into booking us to play for them. It could either have ended in the most amazing party full of good times that we’d ever played, or all of us in hospital with broken faces and ‘queer’ written over our bodies in testosterone.

We got really excited and Steve even refrained from drinking during the day so he could drive us there. We all piled out of the back of Steve’s van feeling like rock stars on tour and set up our gear and the 800 year old PA, to find that the football team weren’t showing up. As there isn’t really anyone in the town that isn’t in the football club the bar was completely fucked and decided to close. We regretfully went back to the house and got extremely drunk.

19/06/08 POGO with the Plagues
This was an interesting one. On my way into the venue I got randomly abused by a bouncer and the bar girl refused to give Ben a glass of water unless he paid for it. Dan started dancing on the bar halfway through our set and bar girls started squirting his legs with beer before the bouncer dragged him down, and we left feeling quite dishevelled. I’m pretty sure we swore never to play there again but somehow ended up back there.

The Plagues were really good. Seb, a left-handed guitarist, broke a string and busted an amazing solo on a right handed guitar upside down. It was impressive.

12/06/08 - Ding Dong with Project321Explosion and Signet Mae

Ding Dong is a magnificent venue, probably my favourite. Project321Explosion pulled a really good crowd and about half stuck around for our set, which is pretty good for a rainy Thursday night. Project321 organised the whole night but got their set cut short by the no tolerance schedule abiding Ding Dong, which was pretty ru-bash for them. We played pretty well and won the a few guys over at the front who went pretty nuts. Halfway through our set one of the dancing guys slyly stole a peripheral foot tapping guy's beer before dancing off unnoticed. Then, to my delight, I got to watch the other guy call him on it and it was AWWWKWARD. The guy got his beer back, but I personally wouldn't want a beer that another sweaty guy had slobbered all over.

As it was one of his last shows Ben really got into it and took off his top at some point. When he came over to my side of the stage one of the dancing guys started taking photos, so I started smiling and stuff until it became perfectly clear that the photo guy didn't even want me in the shot, he was only interested in entering Ben's cheese-grater abs into his digital wank tank.

Dan had decided to reign in his flipping a bit and waited until halfway through the set before letting it all out in one concentrated burst, producing an image that still makes me laugh in inappropriate social situations like trams and solo footpath walking. One minute he was singing on stage, the next minute there was just this cloud silhouette of him in mid air in front of the stage with limbs flailing around, Wile-E-Coyote style. He shot to the back of the room and convulsed all over the place for like 30 seconds in the most maniac dance style I have ever seen in my life. His was firing his limbs in all directions so fast they were a blur and I'm pretty sure the Ministry of Fashionable Dancing would have put him away for a long time had they been in attendance.

06/06/2008 EXXXXTRAVAGANZA at Eurotrash w/ Midnight Woolf, Ouch My Face, Popolice, The Hondas and Cougar Flashy

This show was horrible. Not many people came. Ouch My Face played before us and had everyone from the small crowd getting really into it, but for some reason no one really got into us. It sounded shit in there and Dan kept trying to climb up onto a high table thing and nearly falling off, which is pretty distracting. For every win you have in a band you have at least two big losses, and this was one of them. It was also the night that Ben revealed that he was going to quit the band and I had to stop myself from throwing up at work the whole next day.

01/06/2008 The Great Britain Hotel with Johnny Rock and the Limits

This show was ok. We didn't bring a huge number of people, and Johnny Rock brought a lot. Most of Johnny's crowd fucked off as soon as they'd played their last note and there was a bit of a lag between bands, so by the time we got on it was noticeably less packed. It was still fun and Dan kept disappearing all over the venue, making good use of the extra long lead the sound guy had brought for him. I tried out my new sweatbands, and while they didn't stop the hand sweat I think they made a difference. Steve Huf came for the second week in a row. What a man. I'm starting to feel guilty that we don't have TWO photo albums set up for him on here.

26/05/2008 The Great Britain Hotel with Mirror House Antics

Ahhh the night that could have gone so badly but went so well. I was expecting no one to come. Mirror House Antics are a really good band and pull a good crowd and almost all of our friends that said they were coming actually did come. The GB is a fully sick venue that treats us well. Pretty much everyone of our friends got a free pint from the illustrious GB rider and the vibe was pretty good. The band room has chairs and tables that extinguish any hope of a dance floor, but at least we didn't have to worry about forcing people to dance. We have enough blood on our hands already. As I said before, Mirror House Antics are a really good up-and-coming band so go to one of their shows or snort a coffee cup.

09/05/2008 The Peninsula Lounge with Alpha Remedy, The Filthy Hearts and White Like Heat

I had dreamed about playing this venue since the very start of the Good Time Party Band. Dan and I (and Ben for many years) grew up on the Mornington Peninsula. The last time I was there was about two years before to see Kisschasy and Trial Kennedy. Leon and I had stayed up all night in his bedroom mixing down a shit demo which I then tried to hustle to the bands for supports. I thought I was being smooth at the time but now I'm embarrassed looking back on it.

All the other bands were really nice and massaged the crowd like a prostate. White Like Heat seemed to drag half the ..Peninsula.. down for their set, it was pretty impressive. We were all a bit nervous at first but I think it went pretty well. We all flipped out and I think it sounded good. We all did a few stage jumps, which I think is new terrain that we should definitely keep exploring. There's something about stage jumps that looks so cool in photos, but so fucking retarded live. I think that's half the charm. Nearly 200 peninsula-ites showed out so that was really cool.

01/05/2008 The Evelyn with Near Your House, Clive Drexler, DJ Ladyfist and the Sonic Manipulator.

Thursday the 1st was a cold and shit night. About twelve people and a few tumbleweeds showed up to see us, and the tumbleweeds thought they were there to see the Super Happy Fun Band. Unfortunately I missed the Sonic Manipulator's set due to crime fighting reasons, but I'm sure it was off the hiz-zay. Clive Drexler picked up some extra members since we last played with them and they sounded great. They brought lots of friends. We played pretty good, but it's pretty hard to play to tumbleweeds, the only dance they can physically do is rolling back and forth on the spot, and there wasn't enough wind flow to even get that happening. Near Your House are a really good band and if you haven't seen they live yet you're a muppet.

11/04/2008 The Empress supporting Project321Explosion

This show was a WEIRD one. The Empress has this whole noise complaint issue going on, so you have to play really quiet. The sound guy is even given a decibel monitor. So we played quiet. Dylan from Project321Explosion kindly let me use his guitar amp (as mine is being fixed again) but I put it too close behind me, so it was pretty much just blasting into the back of my knee caps rather than my ears. I couldn't hear half of what I was playing.

It was a bit hard to play well and rock out without much sound, but we did our best. Dan acclimatised pretty quickly and flipped out like a professional. Aaron was really sick and took it for the team to even show up that night. It was Ben's second night in a row at the Empress and he kissed a boy. Project321Explosion were really nice guys. They gave out party poppers and I let someone pop one in my mouth. It was pretty gross and the footage didn't come out half as cool as i'd hoped.

20/03/2008 The Old Bar with the Plagues and Not Quite Special

This was a pretty disorganized night, but sometimes those are the best ones. Being Good Friday Eve, I had pretty high hopes that people would actually have to crowd surf to the bar just to tell the bar girl what a good time they were having. Unfortunately there wasn't such a rush, and the Old Bar was pretty quiet up until 5 minutes before we went on. By this stage my fingernails had almost been bitten back to my elbows, Aaron had pretty much written off the whole night and Dan was masturbating into his shoes under other people's tables. Ben kept it pretty cool though.

LUCKILY just as Ben hit the opening notes to 'Do the Grand Canyon' people started wandering in, and especially lucky that Leon, Adam, Nick and Disco Dan rolled right up to the front and started going off. Then all the people came in from the beer garden and they had to open up that divider thing between the stage and the bar because people were at grave risk of flipping out to death. I broke a string a few bars into the very first song, and although my guitar change-over technique would have been rated at least a 9.8 by the harshest of markers, it could not compensate for the fact that I never play my spare guitar, I'm not used to it and it doesn't make the 'woop woop' noise (used in Justine).

This aside we did pretty well. We tried a new song, played 'Take it like the Man' and got dragged on for an encore (a real one, not one those trashy 'we're going to wander off and conveniently leave our amps on and look toward the encore section of our set list') and got to talk to some people that had never seen us before. It was really good to see the Plagues play again as well, they got really freaking tight since we last saw them. On a scale of 1-478 I give this show a rating of 385.

15/03/2008 Great Britain Hotel supporting Near Your House

We only found out we were playing this show a few days before, as the Genie (3 dudes from the Cat Empire, one of the sickest groups going around at the moment) had pulled out and they needed a replacement. It has been a magical time as of late, where people have been asking US to play shows, as opposed to us hustling and putting out in alleyways for gigs. I was a little nervous about this one as I had no idea that the GB did live music or if people actually went there on a Saturday. I was also a bit on edge as Near Your House are a ridiculously good band, and their guitarist Josh went to the VCA. It's a long standing tradition that guitarists always watch other guitarists and try to compare if they are better than them, and I'm much more comfortable with this process when the other guitarists in the house haven't been to music school (Melbourne's most prestigious one at that).

It worked out to be a really good night, GB gave us a massive rider (hint hint make sure you come next time we're playing there and we'll hook you up) and people got into it. I think it sounded pretty good, a lot of people came up to us after and said they liked it which was nice, even the drunken hecklers. There's a breakdown in one of our songs (Clap Clap Clap) where Dan shouts 'Girls love radicals' over and over, and just as he did it all these dudes burst into room dressed up as terrorists and soldiers and stuff, and just wigged out right in front of us. Aaron got me with another busted stick and I snapped a string in our second last song (the one night I forget to bring a spare guitar). Josh from Near Your House came to the rescue with his guitar, but he ended up snapping a string on that later on and also had no spare guitar.

Near Your House are a really good band. They're kind've like disco rock, their singer pretends to be German (maybe he is German, who's to say) and does the raddest dancing imaginable. Sam, Ben's brother and my mate, was the first to bust onto the dance floor and was loving it until all these girls came up to dance with him and he got nervous and ran away. We all ended up dancing to their last song and it was a Brady Bunch ending to a fairy tale night.

06/03/2008 The Tote, supporting Vaudeville and the Rex Wicked

This show was definitely one to bring us back down to earth, as not only did we have bugger all people coming but we were opening the night at 8:30pm. Apart from the other bands there were about 10 people there to watch us, including Aaron's parents. It turned out to be a pretty fun gig in the end, except I had some issues with my levels and we fucked up a few times. Dan went completely nuts for the first few songs and got totally ruined, and has since been talking about crazy things like running, bike riding and Pilates.

Aaron has become a master at pretending like we haven't screwed up, forging on ahead and allowing us to fluff around a bit until we catch up to where he's at. His skill was particularly handy on this night, pretty much just because of me. I was not quite in the zone, but luckily we pulled it together enough to make it a good (and definitely intimate) show.

Vaudeville are a really good band and are nice guys. You should check them out. Unfortunately I missed the Rex Wicked's set as i had work the next morning (probably the first time in my entire life that I missed the set of another band on a bill with us) but Dan watched them so he'll have to fill you in on what they were like.

01/03/2008 Weekender at Ding Dong with Small Affairs

This was a pretty big deal for the Good Time Party Band as headlining a Saturday at Ding Dong was the biggest show we'd had to date. We postered the shit out of it and harassed all our friends, and despite half the population of Melbourne turning 21 that night we did ok. Turns out Weekender actually brings a fair crowd of it's own, so we were playing to a pretty big crowd. It was a little surreal for me as I was pretty sick and had self medicated on a fairly large dose of Panadol, red bull, beer and seedy Swanston street nachos.

You never can tell when Ben and Aaron are going to freak out, but this was definitely a night that had agreed upon amongst themselves. Dan did his flipping and I got my rock on, and it seemed to win the crowd over. There were heaps of girls we didn't know dancing up the front and people were getting into it. I really like playing Ding Dong, they've got a really good system in there and heaps of fold back speakers, and it's really cool walking on stage from behind curtains. As far as I could tell everyone had a good time. My Dad, the most honest and knowledgeable critic I have, drove all the way from Warragul to check us out and he really liked it. Someone kept yelling at us to break more chairs, so perhaps word is getting spread.

29/02/2008 Pony with Clive Drexler and Daily Waters

This was our first show back in a while as Dan had been traveling through ..Asia.. since the Eurotrash show. It was a bit daunting as we hadn't played live in nearly 2 months, and we had used up all of our favors to make sure we had a crowd at Ding Dong the night after. We had also talked an important person to come and watch us, which was probably a bad thing to do at our first show back.

Anyways, the heavens opened up and people started trickling just before and during Daily Waters' set, and by the time we were ready to go there was at least a half full room. Although I was expecting them all to ignore us and continue their conversations, they actually went pretty silent and seemed to give us their undivided attention which was nice. We didn't play great, but we didn't totally suck. I think we did ok considering the break, and it was really good to get everything ironed out for our big Ding Dong show the night before.

I'm not sure why, but for some reason Dan had found a little plastic chair to sit on, and he decided to kick it in a frenzied moment of sex drugs and rock and roll. This must have really captured the imagination of some drunken punter down the back, who from then on kept screaming '…break the chair' and 'break more chairs' for the rest of the set. Dan (not a strong character in the face of peer pressure) eventually relented and started smashing the shit out of this chair, which stubbornly would not break until he picked it up and began hurling it at the wall. Unfortunately the wall had a shelf which was holding heaps of pot glasses, which of course smashed everywhere. It was pretty sweet and the chair thankfully broke, and luckily the staff at Pony didn't seem to notice/mind too much. Massive props to Stefan for bring his peeps out on a Friday night for us and Ben Presa for taking rad shots (check out our photos section for pictures of the aforementioned chair breaking fiasco).

03/01/2008 EXXXXTRAVAGANZA at Eurotrash with E.L.F, Miami Horror, the Breaks, the Hondas, Clive Drexler, DJ's Ladyfist and Yes No Maybe

This was another Dan Hawkins project and it became clear that everything he touches turns to gold. Somehow he convinced E.L.F (one third of Gerling) to fly down from ....Sydney.... to play and it paid off. He and Tim organized the whole night and it was wicked. Dan's sister made a kissing booth and Guils from the Hondas took it from the team and made out with people for a dollar. DJ Ladyfist (May) sat in there with him for a bit, and someone paid them $3 to kiss each other. Apparently it was a tongue kiss too. I saw 50c in the jar, which means that either someone stinged out and paid 50c for a kiss or someone paid $1.50 for a massive kiss, which makes sense because Giuls said that a few girls did actually slip the tongue in. He was pretty stoked about that. During sound check the manager from Eurotrash came in with a decibel meter and kindly informed us that we were playing way too loud and if we played that loudly during the night the cops would probably show up and he'd shut us down. Fortunately for us, when we played twice as loud that night, no such thing happened and everyone had a good time.

The Honda's got the ladies hearts pounding as usual and Clive Drexler were freaking awesome until their laptop broke. Their guitarist Kate, who had waited patiently the whole set so she could come in and play the last two songs, had to leave without playing and I didn't envy her. The Breaks did well even with a stand in Bass player, and the DJ's and VJ's and HJ's all did really well. This was a highlight show for me; it was probably one of the biggest crowd's we've played to. Dan went crazy and Ben went the most nuts I've ever seen him go. Aaron, as always, was an absolute pro and he managed to break a stick without throwing it at me. I'm not sure if I feel lucky or a little hurt that he forgot to throw it at me. I couldn't help but notice that the room was packed for the first third of our set, but then about halfway through it was a predominately male audience. Are we getting too heavy girls?? This show and our show at Ding Dong (both Dan Hawkins specials) would be my favourite shows so far.

05/12/2007 The Tote with Saint James and the Filthy Hearts.

This was a more low key show than Ding Dong, but it was cool to know that we could still pull a crowd without a big name headliner. It was the Filthy Hearts' first ever show (Stefan the guitarist and I used to play in a band before me and Dan started the Party band), and they ripped it apart. Saint James had a fill in Bass player for the night and did well, and we played good I think. We started pretty modestly but went crazier and crazier as the set went on. Yet again our hardcore friends/fans showed out, and although Leon was still out of the country, Dean, Adam and Ian shouted out all the words and jigged hard enough to cover him.

08/11/2007 Ding Dong Lounge with Little Red, Ouch! My Face! and the Breaks

This was Dan's first try at being manager man and he freaking smashed it. It was the first time I'd met Little Red, and I had no idea of how huge they were until then.  We chucked everything we had at this night, I postered half of Melbourne (with a rad poster kindly created by Celeste from OMF!) and the Party Band spent about $300 000 on sms's. Either all our hard work paid off, or was completely unnecessary as Little Red would have packed the place out anyway. Anyways the Breaks opened and were really good; I actually forgot how good they are.

There was a fair crowd by the time we got on, and it was a really good gig for us. It was sweet to be able to walk on stage from behind a curtain and we played really well. Aaron was smacking the skins so hard that he kept breaking sticks and throwing them at me. Ben went really nuts and Dan was his usual rock star self. He made everyone bunch up at the front so he could do his first ever Party Band crowd surf and it was pretty funny. I'd just spent the last of my paycheck on a brand new foot pedal tuner and it was worth every cent. I was so excited about it that I was even tuning up in the MIDDLE of songs, it was rad.

My amp was still in the shop at this time and Marty from Tic Toc Tokyo descended from heaven to lend me his. This was awesome because his amp is about one hundred million times better than mine. Seeing as it was the first time we'd ever played with Ouch! My Face! we decided to insert one of their riffs into the start of 'They're coming for me' and it was awesome as they weren't expecting it. OMF! played really good despite being the most polar opposite from Little Red you could find. They are a really awesome band. Little Red, of course, stole the show and there was so much estrogen spraying around the room that it actually stained my shirt. I thought that girls were going to start throwing their panties they were loving it that much and I still have nightmares about my girlfriend being left in the same room as them.

10/10/2007 The Espy Front Bar with the Mad Feeling

This gig went surprisingly well for a Wednesday night, with lots of people hanging around to watch us and cheer loudly. Steve from the Mad Feeling kindly let me use his wicked Orange guitar amp as mine was in the shop getting repaired after I blew it. They were really nice and we had a good time. This was the night that Dan (Leon's friend not our singer Dan) graduated into the realm of hardcore Party Band fan. He'd chosen to spend his birthday with the Party Band, while less than 5 months ago he'd broken his leg dancing to us at the Tote. What a guy.

29/09/2007 The Blue Tile Lounge Grand Final Party with the Shoes and the Breaks

This was a pretty lame gig as we were playing to a practically empty room. We still played pretty well, but it's near impossible to flip out to about 8 seated people. We met the Breaks this night and really liked their music. Ben was sick and had to keep spraying that anti snot stuff up his nose which was pretty funny, and everyone was a bit slow due to the Grand Final that day. Dan and I proceeded to get wasted after the show and hung out with Breaks for ages after.

27/09/2007 The Espy Public Bar with Spider Vomit, Saint James and Sons of Stanhope

This was a big night for us. I had talked us into getting together our own night at the Public Bar by making out that we were a much bigger deal than we were and promising that our friends Ouch! My Face! would be headlining. Unfortunately OMF! couldn't do it in the end, and things looked pretty grim until Dan managed to secure the services of Indie sensations Spider Vomit. We got pretty excited and postered the shit out of Fitzroy with our first ever band poster (ever so kindly made by Bridget).

A lot of people rocked up on the night and the room was looking packed, but it seemed that many of them had come for Saint James and some left before our set. We forged on however and things went well. We did our first ever song in '3D' and everyone tripped out. Dan spent hours and hours stapling bits of cellophane to those glasses and I spent most of that afternoon writing 'thegoodtimepartyband.com' on all the arms.

My Dad came for the first time since our show at the Laundry and he seemed to really like us, which was a sigh of relief for me. Ben keg walked for the longest I'd ever seen him do, and Dan went nuts. Aaron's kick drum smashed me in the chest the whole set and it was awesome. Unfortunately Sons of Stanhope ended up going way over time and the whole night got pushed back, meaning that Spider Vomit's set was cut short and that sucked for them.

Current mood:  bummed

Hey all,

Ben has decided to jump ship and will be playing his last proper show with the band at Ding Dong this Thursday. Most of our upcoming shows have been cancelled.

He will hopefully be filling in for the Pogo show next week, and we should have a new bass player for our next Pogo show.

The official line is that he's off focussing on his jazz and double bass, but the truth is he's going on a three year pig shooting retreat.

We're pretty sad about the lineup change but these things happen. Ben is my oldest mate and if you talk trash about him I will fight you.

Bag one for me big guy.

the Good Time Party Band Gigography Part One!

Ok so this whole Gigography idea was clearly ripped from Little Red, but hey there's no such thing as stealing in music, it's all about 'being influenced by' and 'paying tribute to'. So, if Little Red come up to you on the street and say: 'hey how about that devilsome Party Band and their stealing of our Gigography concept', you say: 'well clearly they were so impressed by not only your fantastic idea, but everything you stand for, and chose to pay you the ultimate tribute of making their own Gigography'. Little Red will probably be so impressed by your rad answer that you'll all no doubt drop everything you're doing and go get ice cream and some sweet hair cuts together.

17/08/2007 The Blue Tile Lounge with the Shoes and the Plagues

This was our first time at the Blue Tile Lounge, it's a tiny little venue on Smith Street but it's pretty cool. We weren't too optimistic before the show as we hadn't managed to rally much of a crowd and it's a fairly unknown/new venue, but luckily for us it's pretty easy to pack out a small room. Our most hardcore fan base of four were there of course, plus some of our lovely female friends, and combined with a few random friends and the other bands it worked out pretty well. People danced and I laughed watching one of Leon's friends get wasted and attempt to pick up nearly every girl in the place. Someone started up limbo during our set and it was rad. As the room was quite intimate it was like the more that Dan flipped out, the more the crowd would flip out, which meant that Dan would flip out even more, and I began to get worried that someone would burst into flames. Aaron got the rare treat of using the house kit and only having to bring cymbals, but he ended up having to drive anyway and the kit sucked apparently.

12/07/2007 The Espy, Public Bar, supporting Johnny Rock and the Limits, with Elora Danan and the Reptiles

We were opening the night for Johnny Rock, the Reptiles and Elora Danan. It was a pretty good show, the room was only about a third full as we were playing so early, but it was fun. Massive props to my homie Johnny Rock for giving us the show. One of our friends got ridiculously drunk before coming and caused a massive ruckus, it was pretty funny. He was the only person up the front, but he went nuts and did some drumming on the keg for us. We didn't realize what a big deal Elora Danan were, they'd come all the way over from Perth and packed the place out. They were really nice guys. Their guitarist awesome to watch as he rocks out so freaking hard, he was literally bouncing off the wall. Unfortunately for him our drunk friend returned to the Public Bar halfway though their set and kept grabbing/bear hugging his legs, which was a bitch for him cos he was a big foot pedal using guy, He took it pretty well though and I had a hearty chuckle throughout the whole ordeal. I missed most of the Reptiles set unfortunately but Johnny Rock and the Limits were really good. Ben did a massive keg walk and it was sweet. I just realized that this was the Good Time Party Band's 20th show! I think that we'd come a pretty long way since our first show at Monash, and it was good to share it with the esteemed 2004 Lots Wife editor Johnny Rock.

05/07/2007 Cmon Cmon at the Evelyn

We were only called up a few days before this show as another band had pulled out, and we faced the unenviable task of convincing heaps of people to rock up to a show in a few days time, especially when we were opening. We failed this task dismally and played to no more than 10 people, including the Dead South who were nice enough to check out our set. Although it was a mostly empty room, I was pretty stoked to play the Evelyn. It was cool meeting the Dead South too, their music is really good and different, and they dress really ridiculously well which made me look down at my tattered volleys in shame. Talkshow Boy is someone you really have to see to believe, whether you like the music or not you cannot ignore Talkshow Boy. That guy has a lot of energy.

22/06/2007 The Tote Cobra Bar/ A Good Time Guide to the Galaxy/Hannah's 21st.

This one was a bit of a crazy gig; I think it was weird in the good way but can't be completely sure. We were playing Hannah's (Dan's girlfriend) 21st birthday party and it was a sci fi theme. We were the only band in between DJ's, but people still danced and got into it though which was rad. We covered the Doctor Who theme and the Star Wars theme and it sounded pretty sweet. Dan got the most hammered he's ever gotten before a show and he was going nuts. There was a rad moment where he hollered 'Who do you loooove??' and before anyone had a chance to say anything he answered his own question with a big 'Meeeeeeee'. It was hilarious and we still give him shit about that moment in time where his drunkenness levels and onstage ego both climaxed at exactly the right time. I learnt that trying to play with a storm trooper helmet with pretty much no eye holes is pretty hard.

19/06/2007 The Espy Front bar

Every time we've played the Espy we've had a good time, and unfortunately all those good times at the front bar have rolled into one for me and I can't remember any distinguishing features of this night. I think it's safe to assume that we had a good time. I think our friend Stevie was there and took some rad shots, there's an awesome one of Dan sprawled out on the floor of the pub with his guitar totally flipping out. The espy has always treated us pretty well, we always end up playing to way more people than we brought as people just hang out all night there.

03/06/2007 The Arthouse

We were regulars at the Arthouse by this stage and were playing with Caliga and Rick's Bar. Although we'd plugged this show a million times on radio the night before we brought about 4 people to that show, and I played like shit. The Good Time Party Band was wedged in a metal sandwich full of guitar men, and this was the night that I busted like 3 strings in rapid succession which messed me up. I still didn't have a spare guitar by this stage and Phil from Caliga was nice enough to bring one of his up to me, and while it allowed me to keep playing I didn't play very well as I've gotten way too used to my own guitar and don't adapt well. The other guys did really well holding it together, and it was clear that they played good and I didn't.

02/06/2007 Live on 3RRR fm

It was pretty exciting to play live on radio, we got asked to play on the Saturday night 'party show' which was extremely appropriate for us. Steve Huf came and helped out with the megaphone and we all felt like superstars. I'm still not sure how it sounded because we never ended up getting hold of the cd, but it was really fun and a good chance for us to spruik our wares to people we'll probably never meet. I found a RRR subscriber newsletter and still have it now; it's a really good read. Every year we mean to subscribe to 3RRR but forget. Next subsribathon I swear.

23/05/2007 Monash 'Save Green Week Night' fundraiser

The Good Time Party Band love Monash and I think that Monash loves the Good Time Party Band. We played in a hollowed out old bar to trashed people that went freaking nuts. I got bought in a slave raffle and was forced to wear a gympish leather dress for the whole set, although I covered it up halfway. When I peeled it off at the end of the set there was actually sweat dripping of it and every girl within a two metre radius squirmed away in horror from me. The sound was rubbish in there and Aaron beat the shit out of his drums to compensate. Someone took some rad photos and it was awesome as we were only playing for a slab. Saint James were playing before us and they were really good, although some jerks kept playing beer pong during their set. I got peer pressured into playing for a bit and still feel guilty about it to this day. There is an awesome photo of Dan from this show and it looks like he's trying to take a dump onstage, it's really funny. He ended up getting bounced around the room by crazy punters who maintained a mosh pit the whole show, and he bounced right back to them in punk rock style and it was cool.

01/05/2007 The Tote

I think that by this stage the Plagues, the Shoes and the Good Time Party Band were technically related. We had almost learnt each other's lyrics and were still batting it out for which 'the' band would reign supreme. By the way I'd like to take this opportunity to point out that 'the' is just as much a part of our name as 'Good' or 'Time' or 'Party' or 'Band'. You may notice that 'the' had a lower case 't' while every other word starts with an upper case letter. Write it down, tell your peeps, because if one more venue gets it wrong I'm holding YOU personally responsible. Anyway, we were stoked to finally stand on the world famous and eerily sticky stage of the Tote. I think we might have actually flipped out more than at the Arthouse. I jumped off the stage, accidentally landed on my knees and had absolutely no idea where to go from there, so I just kind've crawled around on my knees for the entire solo and looked pretty dumb. One guy was wigging out so hard that broke his leg, apparently there was bone sticking actually piercing his skin, or maybe I made that up. He keeps promising to send us the photos of his rock dog injury for our myspace but hasn't done it yet. He will look down at the scar on his knee and remember our band for the rest of his life. That gives me a boner.

18/03/2007 The Arthouse

I think that this was with our friends the Shoes and the Plagues. It was our first ever weekend show, although being a Sunday night it didn't really make much difference. This show was the peak of us concentrating on flipping out so hard that we would forget to play well, and I still have a recording of this night to remind me to keep the flipping in check. The Plagues didn't let us down and again started a four man mosh right up the front, it was fully sick. I think maybe the Missing played this night as well, it was definitely one of the Arthouse shows. They were cool, I can still remember their guitarist, he was pretty young and looked like a young Angus Young. Three young's in one sentence, that's a low point in the Gigography. Anyways, this kid was fucking shredding it up and he had this rad/goofy grin the whole time he was shredding, I think that he was the man.

13/03/2007 The Espy

This was the Good Time Party Band's first show at the espy and we were excited. Although it was a Tuesday night, if you have to play a Tuesday night anywhere you'd want it to be the espy. There were lots of people just hanging out and drinking and stuff because it was still nice weather and our modest legion of friends showed up and had a good time. My old guitar teacher was there and I got so nervous about playing in front of him that I did a sneaky spew before we went on. How cool is that. The bass player from Saint James happened to be there playing pool with some friends so we ended up getting quite drunk with him afterwards at what may have been the seediest and most tragic joint in Melbourne. I can't remember what it was called or where it was, but it was the only place open in Saint Kilda on a Tuesday night.

28/02/2007 The Grand Central Hotel

We were back at the Grand Central and about to learn a lesson the hard way. Turns out the Good Time Party Band still had a lot to learn about promotion, and although announcing your next show on stage and putting it up on your myspace is good it doesn't count as promo. It was just us and the Plagues playing, Talkshow Boy was booked to open the night but he didn't show for some reason, and I think that each band brought a crowd of 1 person each. It was pretty intense. Both bands rocked out nonetheless, although I broke another string. Dan was going nuts on the floor, I think Ben took his shirt off and I climbed up some high thing that was rad but then did a sissy jump off it and short changed myself. The Plagues moshed to our set like there was 2000 people in the room and I still love them for that. I may be wrong, but I think that this may have been the first time that Ben ever keg walked. This amazing stunt of his is ever elusive, he has to be really psyched up and having a really good time to do it and you never know when it's going to happen. I think Aaron may have busted a stick that night, I know we definitely busted one of his sticks on the keg. I remember we screwed up a few times but Aaron just pretended like they were drum solos and powered on like a pro. We had a good time, but definitely didn't expect any more shows at the Grand Central.

19/02/2007 Host Scheme Night at QBH with the Dukes of Windsor, Skybombers and the Inches. (Monash Uni's big party to celebrate the start of the year)

This was a fairly random and high profile show and a big jump from our last few shows. We were clearly in over our heads but we had a good time nonetheless. As we were the first band on and the token no-name band, we were the only ones not getting paid and the only ones to be done playing by 9:30pm. This meant that we were four rowdy guys cooped up in a room with a lot of slabs, intended to be split evenly amongst the bands. We had fully intended to honour this, but we accidentally got drunk and the Inches didn't rock up until pretty late, so they probably had about 3 beers left between them. Wild horses couldn't have dragged us away from a good time that night, and we got trashed and talked with the other bands like we too were rock stars and we knew what they were going through. Although the guys assure me that I wasn't being that wasted guy that talks way too much, it's hard to trust them as they were trashed too. Steve Huf gave it a nudge with us that night too and I decided that I love him.

Dan flipped out with his megaphone that night and tried to physically drag people to the dance floor, but a lot of them didn't want a bar of it. Those that did come were heavily influenced by our friends who were cutting up the floor and everyone had a party. Everyone had Eargasms over the Dukes of Windsor and Ben and I decided that they are our favorite Melbourne band. I was ready to get a lift back to my girlfriend's house when Ravi from the Skybombers peer pressured me into getting even more trashed, using the fact that I play in the 'Good Time Party Band' against me. I ended up freaking retarded and trying to walk from QBH to South Yarra at like 4am before luckily running into a friend who drove me.

07/02/2007 The Arthouse

After me hassling them and Dan flogging them a demo, the Arthouse finally called us up for a show. I was pretty keen to play there as not long before I'd seen Trial Kennedy, Horsell Common and the Scissor File there and it was a rad venue that was packed to the rafters with fans of those bands. It made the Arthouse seem like a pretty..ahem..'happening joint'. We asked our new band friends The Plagues and There She Goes Again to support and it was grand. There She Goes Again have an uncanny ability to pull crowds wherever they go, they could play a show at Frankston train station and truckloads of fashionable people would emerge out of nowhere.  This was one of the first nights we'd had a rider I think and I was pretty excited. Ben and Aaron had done it all before with other bands but Dan and I were but giddy schoolchildren waiting for the sex and drugs to leap through the windows while we were rocking and rolling. I think we flipped out pretty good that night and it was cool to hear nice things from people that we didn't know.

27/01/2007 Grand Central Hotel

I'm getting these dates from our myspace but clearly they're wrong cos we didn't do this show three days after the Barleycorn..anyways. We played after an experimental band called 'Thank fucking god we're alive' and 3 piece all girl band 'There she goes again'. It was a fun night but I'm pretty sure I busted a string and it screwed me up. I hadn't worked out yet that you have to change guitar strings more than 3 times a year, or at least bring a spare guitar to shows. This and the amount it put me off for the rest of the night became known as 'the Grand Central incident'.

24/01/2007 The Barleycorn hotel

I'm not sure how it came about but we ended up recording a demo at Steve Huf's (our more often than not sound guy and bass player for Ouch! My Face!) house in Richmond, and this show was supposed to be a 'demo launch' show. I suppose I'll slip in a quick word about the demo.. Recording with Steve was sweet and it became pretty clear that Ben and Aaron had signed on for Good Times with the Party Band, and everything was finally moving. Highlights include: Steve living opposite McDonalds, Aaron and Ben and Steve creating this whole rad eerie start to 'They're Coming For Me' using a double bass and cymbals dipped in and out of water buckets, Dan realising he could comfortable sing like an octave higher and that it sounded awesome and me doing massive death screams for 'They're Coming For Me' until I thought I'd busted a rib or something and couldn't talk just to find that Steve had forgotten to press record.

The Barleycorn show was the first one we'd organized ourselves (well actually Dan organized it), and we got the Shoes to play and also Dan's friend Joe Charles to spin some slammin tunes. It was another good crowd, as it had been a while since our last show and people weren't sick of us yet. I think also that because Dan had labeled it a demo launch that people thought it would be a massive EP launch and that it would be this huge show and that the Good Time Party Band had made it. Anyways, people showed up again and we were completely spoilt although we didn't realize it at the time. Ben snapped a string in the first song and I witnessed what may have been the fasted string change since 1846. We played 'pass the parcel' and everyone got demos except the last and ultimate winner, who won Dan's onion. The manager of Ouch! My Face! came along and asked us to play at the Grand Central Club as he was booking the bands, so it was sweet to tee up a follow up show quick smart.

21/09/2006 Chelsea Heights Hotel supporting the Go Set (Round 2)

This was another night in the semi empty room at Chelsea, except this time there were a few more locals there. A few old beardy biker dudes that I thought were heckling us from their table turned out to be having a good time and just flipping out from the comfort of our chairs. One of them, after a few more refreshing ales, took me aside and told me how great we were, and how much we reminded him of Killing Heidi. It was a weird sort of a compliment, but honestly I was just glad that he wasn't punching me in the face. Some more of Adam and Dean's friends came who were actually fans of the Go Set so they were pretty stoked to have some real fans there. Just before we played we were hanging out in the TAB which was right next to the room we were playing in and Dan was betting on the greyhounds. He ended up losing money it became something of a ridiculously funny personal joke amongst the Good Time Party Band that night. Unfortunately I forgot that it was a personal joke, and just after Dan said something really funny onstage I followed it up with a 'yeah, don't bet on the greyhounds'. There was something about the way I said it, I just thought that I was the funniest man in the world and that this line would actually have people urinating in their pants, it was just that funny. This dumb comment silenced the room like a dead baby and it turns out that Ben was recording the show that night, and every time I hear that stupid joke it makes my stomach turn. You can almost hear the tumbleweed and everyone in the room thinking 'this guy is a complete tosser and I hope he never uses the microphone again'.

Although the rest of my band drove home to bed like little nancy girls, I stuck around until the end so I could try to schmooze the Go Set for some of those city shows they kept talking about, and during their last song they were rocking out so hard that they asked the Good Time Party Band to get up and sing a song with them. Unfortunately it was just me left and I had no clue what half of their names were let alone lyrics. This was kind've awkward but luckily Adam and Dean's friend's jumped up as well and they knew the words so it was sweet. They asked us to come back again the next week but I think someone had another show on or something and we couldn't do it. We were also a bit bitter that the Go Set were smashing slabs of Corona's from their rider but didn't share so we were forced to keep sipping our waters like they were little cups of pain.

This was the night that we met the Plagues, who played before us, and although we didn't end up talking for that long we ended up being friends and doing heaps more shows with them.

14/09/2006 Chelsea Heights Hotel supporting the Go Set

We did two of these shows and they were very strange. We were still very wet behind the ears, and when I got a call from Justin from the Go Set asking if we'd like to support them while they were doing shows in Chelsea I naturally jumped at the opportunity. I was just stoked to have another reason to keep playing with Ben and Aaron who both clearly didn't have the time to spend on a band going nowhere. It was in the big glass dome at the start of the Frankston freeway, but it was in like a pub/bistro bit where they'd clearly just cleared the tables and dimmed the lights. It was a very awkward setup and I'd had fantasies that because were playing with the Go Set who had toured the world and had records out and stuff that we would be playing to a sizeable crowd and that this was a big opportunity for us. The Go Set, I now realize, were under the impression that as we were a semi local band that we'd bring the crowd. Needless to say, it wasn't a packed room. We were lucky because we had our friends Adam, Dean, Leon and some of their friends there (who are still the most loyal and diehard Good Time Partyers to date and have missed about two shows) and they danced for us and got trashed. We had a good time because we were just stoked to be playing somewhere. The Go Set asked us back the next week and we were excited, if we kept doing these shows with them then we would be assured support slots at their city shows, which was a pretty sweet deal for us although we're still waiting by our phones for the Go Set to call with those shows.

23/08/2006 Monash Uni Band Comp Final at Laundry

A combination of us being a wildcard draw and Ben and Aaron having another gig that night meant that the Good Time Party Band had to play first, which is usually the death knell for any band at these types of nights. Luckily the Good Time Party Band had an even larger entourage this night than the last show, and they all rushed up the front and flipped out even though we fucking sucked. This show was a 30 minute set and we were a band with only 15 minutes worth of A grade music. We came up with this really hard riff with a wack time in a song called 'I'm walking home' that I actually dreamt/had nightmares about the night before. That one riff had me completely captivated for 2 days and I still managed to forget it on the night and screw up the song. We flipped out as best we could, and our friends rocked out like we were an international band and didn't notice/pretended not to notice how much us and the sound sucked. My Dad came to that show (my one honest critic) and just kind've shook his head after it. Although we came second last, we won another 2 bottles of beam for having the most crowd which meant we now had a bottle each and it was rad. My Dad got a parking fine but I was sweet cos Ben showed me a secret car park near Laundry about which I've already said too much.

10/08/2006 Monash Uni Band Comp (our first ever gig and all that happened beforehand).

This was a huge night for the Good Time Party Band. Less than two weeks before our first show our drummer stopped showing up to rehearsals or answering his phone. This didn't impress anyone, least of all my friend Ben, whose jazz trained bass playing services we'd begged for and temporarily obtained for this gig. I'd signed us up for the band comp a while back even though we weren't ready, because we needed something to force us to start actually being serious and stop messing around in Dan's garage. We had one more rehearsal before the gig, Ben was still learning the songs, and we had no drummer. We were fucked. Ben jumped on the blower and phoned up his mate Aaron, who he'd played with in many other rock bands, most recently Whisky Go Go's. Aaron, for some unknown reason, said 'yeah sure I'll play this ridiculously unrehearsed, unpaid riderless gig for two dudes I've never met before'.

The first time we played a song together, even though it was probably messy, it felt like we were actually ejaculating rainbows from the top of our heads. We rehearsed in a dingy little room at Jamtin rehearsal studios (which would end up being our home for one night a week) and there was a sign up on the wall asking us not to spit on the curtains. We had a pretty good time, having a sweet drummer and bass player driving things made whatever Dan and I do sound decent and it was the first time that things had really clicked for the Good Time Party Band. It was a bittersweet moment because I knew that even though we sounded freaking rad at the time, Ben and Aaron had pretty much signed on for one night contracts and I was scared we'd go back to being hacks after the show.

Our first show was probably one of my personal highlights, it was my first show as a guitarist (having played Bass in my last band) and we dragged heaps of people along to watch us flip out for just 15 minutes. It was the first time I'd ever seen Dan unleash the fury and Ben and Aaron made us sound good. There were party poppers and blowers. In what some would say was the 'upset of the century', others the 'dirtiest moment in modern rock history' we didn't make the top 3. This was disappointing as the only plan I had for extending Ben and Aaron's stay in the Good Time Party Band was to win and go through to the next round. Fortunately I managed to end up talking the judges to let us through as a wildcard and Ben and Aaron stayed on board for another show.

We won 2 bottles of Jim Beam for having the most people through the door and it was freaking sweet. People showed out in a massive way. Some people that were at the first show still come to our shows and some of them have barely missed one since. They are wonderful people and I intend to give each and every one of them romance explosions with my hand party.

Current mood:  grateful
This is probaly the first review ever written about us; the gig was at Ding Dong w/ Little Red, Ouch! My Face! and The Breaks. Woo!

As much trepidation as I had for the crowd tonight, I couldn't resist this awesome lineup. I arrived as early as possible, sadly missing The Breaks (I've seen 'em before though, they're rad, get into 'em) but catching most of Good Time Party Band's set. Singer Dan is a storm in a bottle; chaotic energy and raging vocals all inside a lovely neat sweater. Their bizarre- in a good way- blend of funk rock and psychadelia is instantly likeable and danceworthy. Kudos to Dan, also, for living his dream of crowd surfing for the very first time tonight at Ding Dong. I was a bit afraid many punters would drop the singer, considering some people's odd sense of humour, but luckily all went well. Just like guitarist Jason's t-shirt, I too heart TGTPB.

Ouch! My Face took to the stage; pint-sized singer Celeste is, too, deceiving in appearance. Her small frame and cuteness did not prepare me for the punk-rock ferocity of her voice. Her screams were terrifying in the best possible way. OMF are an awesomely helter-skelter Melbourne three-piece that turned the Ding Dong stage into an altar for anarchy. Their song Firehead is an awesome psychedelic-punk track- highly recommended.

Ah, Little Red. One of the most reliable acts in Melbourne. There are few bands of which I am absolutely guaranteed to have a brilliant time, no matter the venue or my own state of mind. One other band in this category of mine is The Basics, so whenever the two play together I almost lose my mind in all the awesomeness. Their take on 50's nostalgia and old timey rock and roll is second to none, pulling it off with an odd skill, as if they had been there (making the boys, oh, about 60…gosh they look good for their age don't they!). The self-proclaimed "world's grooviest white R&B vocal group" certainly live up to their title. Tracks like Waiting and Cry Cry are drenched with 50's cool, and their entire discography is reason enough to get up and dance. Frontmen Adrian and Dom ooze retro charm, channeling the likes of Mel Torme and good ol' Frankie S. Finishing off with my favourite LR track, the happy-clappy Coca Cola (the song in which I was convinced the lyrics were "Coca Cola and rice" rather than "ice" which led to some very strange conversations about the merits of cooking rice with soda) Ding Dong was buzzing with the happy feet of the dancing punters. Always a pleasure.
