My friend Andrew Marino and I have been working on a new project the past couple of months. It's a book of both of our photography, packaged with a cd of music that we've made together. I think the thing looks really great. We've put it out on our new record label, Full Spectrum. It would mean a lot to us if you went and checked it out, and pick it up if you're interested. We've got some new releases coming on the label, so please check out what those are too. You can find us at: www.fullspectrumrecords.com

Score: 6.5/10 Brian McBride and Adam Wiltzie (aka Stars of the Lid) were just twenty-three at the dawn of their musical pursuits. Tim Hecker was twenty-five. Taylor Deupree and Christian Fennesz's formative works were also created in their twenties. I would like to acknowledge that as young as they were, these budding artists possessed the potentiality to bloom into the captivating contemporary pioneers of the genre that they are today. Andrew Weathers, the man behind Pacific Before Tiger, is a scant twenty years old, but don't let that disillusion you. His debut album Anchors is an intriguingly mature minimalist work, accentuating aural details drawn from loose improvisation and a heightened focus of environmental elements. Weathers hails from Greensboro, North Carolina; there he studies composition and percussion, drawing inspiration from modern and contemporary composers with a minimalist bend, such as Feldman, Cage, Glass, and Reich. After completing an extensive tour of the US last year toting the likes of Olafur Arnalds and Keith Fullerton Whitman, Weathers has certainly gotten his foot in the door and is well on his way. Anchors begins with the slow-paced, gentle "In Gold" that develops volumetrically into '"In Rust." By that, I mean that ominous static hissing is elevated and morphs into lighter noise. "In Silver," the longest piece at nearly twenty minutes, vacillates between buoyant high and dense low pitches in an ever-present, icily desolate soundscape. The pulsating chords of "In Gray" beat in and out, the abrasive noise dissolves at time but collects at the center of the piece; this is the only song with dramatic volume and timbre shifts. The quiet moments fade down into a whisper presenting a more environmental dose of distortion resulting in the decay of sound.
Pacific Before Tiger's attempt to reify overlooked environmental elements was successful in this album. The well-executed organic trajectory is captivating and assertively reserves a place for Weathers with today's most prominent executers of the genre.

I just put up a short section from a live set, recorded at the Luna Bean in Wilson, NC on March 28, 2008. Gray Young and Spruce Bringsteen also played the show, and Afraid of The Bear Records recorded it.
For this performance, I processed saxophonist Austin Glover's improvisation. Austin is a composer and amazing musician that I'm fortunate enough to go to school with. Hopefully we'll be collaborating more in the future.
It's very different from what I've done in the past, but I hope you enjoy it anyway.

January 2nd, 2008 - Richmond, VA - WRIR 97.3 - Noise Solution Radio This is going to be me on Kenny Yates' (Caustic Castle, HzCollective) radio show. I'm not sure what exactly it's going to be. I'll probably play some songs, talk a little, and listen to more songs. Pacific Before Tiger on the radio is a first, and I'm really looking forward to doing this. 11PM - 97.3 FM in the RVA area - www.wrir.org everywhere else.
January 4th, 2008 - Philadelphia, PA - Eris Temple This is with Radio Eris, and another local. These are folks I played with at the Eyedrum in Atlanta, with no one there. Radio Eris is interesting stuff. The closest I can compare it to is Patty Smith, in that the lyrics are all spoken word poetry. The music is really psychedelic stuff, and I don't even use that word. (www.myspace.com/radioeris)
January 5th, 2008 - Brooklyn, NY - Tommy's Tavern ( ) is glitchy, very digital ambient. Very minimal, a lot of open space, and a lot of tiny tiny sounds. (www.parenthesismusic.com) Ian Epps is more structured ambient. A little melodic, and there is a definite pulse to the music. (www.ianepps.com) Darsombra is a guy named Brian, who I played a show with at Nightlight earlier in the year. He blew me away. One man brutal drone. I am really excited that he is playing tonight. (www.darsombra.com) (www.tommystavern.com)
January 6th, 2008 - Manhattan, NY - Piano's (Upstairs) Darsombra is also playing this show. So is, Ala Muerte. Ala Muerte is the solo project of Bianca, who also plays with Destructo Swarmbots. Ala Muerte is quite different. She plays with vocals a lot, to a very haunting effect. Etheral experimental, at times folky. (www.myspace.com/alamuerta) (www.pianosnyc)
January 7th, 2008 - Baltimore, MD - Joe Squared This is with a band called Jump Cuts, who I actually haven't listened to, but I was told they are dancy and fun. Also playing are Broken Connection (www.myspace.com/brokenconnectionband). Broken Connection is a collaboration between Wilmington, DE's Ben Fleury-Steiner and three members of Philadelphia's Northern Valentine. It's improvisational ambient with guitars, keys and violin. The recordings that are on the myspace sound really great, I wish you would check them out, even if you're not coming to the shows. This will also be the first time I've played in a pizza place. (www.joesquared.com)
So that's it. If you can make it to any of these shows, please do. If you can't, please tell your friends who can. I will appreciate it more than you'll ever know.
-Andrew
